A near death experience is only the beginning of Jeff Resnick's troubles. Family comes to town, but one of them, a nephew who reminds Jeff of the thugs who mugged him, has unsettled him. He's on edge. The fact that his brother has taken possession of an expensive boat through an IRS auction takes his mind off the bad vibes he's getting from other relatives. But that yacht holds a deadly secret, one destined to turn his world upside down. Will Jeff figure out the puzzle before his vision of near death becomes a reality?
The immensely popular Booktown Mystery series is what put Lorraine Bartlett’s pen name Lorna Barrett on the New York Times Bestseller list, but it’s her talent -- whether writing as Lorna, or L.L. Bartlett, or Lorraine Bartlett -- that keeps her there. This multi-published, Agatha-nominated author pens the exciting Jeff Resnick Mysteries as well as the acclaimed Victoria Square and Lotus Bay Mystery series, and now the Tales of Telenia fantasy saga, and has many short stories and novellas to her name(s). AFTER WAITING FOR WHAT SEEMED LIKE FOREVER, FINALLY ANOTHER JEFF RESNICK MYSTERY. YIPPEE!! I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED, I LOVE JEFF AND HIS DIFFERENT TYPE OF FAMILY/FRIENDS. HE IS THE TYPE OF GUY I JUST WANT TO GIVE HIM A BIG HUG. HE HAS SUFFERED AN ARRAY OF PROBLEMS, TROUBLE AND EMOTIONS, NONE OF HIS OWN MAKING. THIS TIME MY URGE TO HELP HIM, WENT OVER THE TOP, I WAS ON THE EMOTION TRAIN RIGHT WITH HIM, I WAS SO AFRAID HE WASN'T GOING TO MAKE IT THIS TIME. JEFF AND FAMILY THIS TIME OUT HAVE SOME PROBLEMS THAT ARE REALLY HORRIBLE. AFTER THE SECOND TIME I GOT UP TO GET A TISSUE I JUST LEFT THE BOX BESIDE ME JUST INCASE. SNIFFLE, SNIFF, SNIFF!! THE ENDING WAS GREAT. I HAVE READ ALL OF THE SERIES AND MANY OF THE OTHER BOOKS TOO, THE FULL LENGTH AND THE SHORT ONES, I L.O.V.E. THEM ALL. WHEW! WHAT EXCITEMENT, PLASE DON'T SCARE ME LIKE THAT AGAIN (I know you will) MY HEART CAN'T TAKE IT. ;0 I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE, I READ THIS ONE WAAY TO FAST.
This volume opens with our hero, Jeff Resnick experiencing another Near Death Experience (NDE) and it leaves him quaking...his vision is triggered by an allergic response to a Bee sting. Since you must have had one prior to go into anaphylactic shock...he must have had this experience before...he can't remember from his brain injury of having been mugged a while ago. The real shock hits Jeff though when he is introduced to Brenda's nephew Da Marr...the horrible attack plays back and Jeff is brought to his knees.
Jeff's half-brother, Richard Alpert and his wife, Brenda are expecting their first baby...a girl. The family is besides themselves. Until Brenda's sister arrives for the birth. She brings an attitude and her obnoxious son as well. There is also the fact that this marriage is bi-racial and Sister isn't aboard with that.
We have drama galore in this novel. Stolen gems, stolen boats (of the expensive type,) and a heart-stopping race to the end. Yes, Jeff does have a vision that comes through...you might find yourself panting at the last chapters.
The ending was wonderful. Even the ghost agrees. What? a ghost? Yep, this book has it all. Read it and enjoy. This was my second reading of it as I went through a medical time where I wasn't up to writing reviews. I thoroughly enjoyed it again.
This review is from: Dark Waters (The Jeff Resnick Mysteries) (Kindle Edition)
I've read all in the Jeff Resnick series including the short stories and enjoyed them...this, however, was a let down for me.
The family aspect of this book( Jeff, Richard and Brenda) was short lived due to the arrival of Brenda's aunt Evelyn and the unannounced arrival of DaMarr. The author did attempt to address a situation that most authors would not dare to confront regarding the black community and their dilemmas and the effects on the white community and for that I give her credit. But the obnoxious negativity from DaMarr that went unaddressed by both Brenda, Richard and Evelyn was beyond tedious and almost brought the book to an early end for me.
The most happening part of the story didn't start until I was 70% through the book/kindle. By that time it really didn't matter much anyway. sorry to say I gave this book a 3 star rating and that was being generous.
Richard Resnick and his wife, Brenda are awaiting the birth of their first child....a girl. Richard's brother Jeff is just as excited. That is until Brenda's sister, Evelyn and nephew, Da-Marr come to help out. Jeff gets very strange vibes from Da-Marr and his aunt doesn't see any of it. When Richard goes out and buys a yacht, Da-Marr has to be the first one to drive it. While at the marina, Da-Marr meets up with a new "friend". Mean while Jeff and his friend Sam are trying to find out where a murdered Ponzi scheme leader hid part of the "loot" he made. LL Bartlett didn't disappoint when she published this book. Parts of it took me back to my visit to Buffalo and the falls when I was a child. For me it was a lovely memory, but I'm sure not so much for Jeff Resnick. I have loved each book in this series and I think this one is my favorite so far.
Everything seems to be going right for Jeff....he is going to become an uncle any day now and he and Maggie are working things out. Then Brenda's sister, Evelyn, and Evelyn's nephew, Da-Marr arrive to stay for an extended period. Evelyn is bossy and Da-Marr only wants to lead his own life with no one telling him what to do.
Richard has also bought a rather large boat that Brenda is not happy about. As friction and unhappiness settle onto the family Da-Marr just disappears. When he is found on Richard's boat, with a friend, tearing it apart looking for diamonds the previous owner supposedly left behind, things go from bad to worse and then from worse to the absolute worst. Even Sophia isn't sure Jeff will survive this time.
I love this series. Great characters and always a fast read.
I am huge fan of this series but this one was not my favorite. Maybe it was the sheer gloom of it that did not resonate well with me. The plot dragged, it did not have the pace that I am used to from this author. It felt uneven, did not flow with any smoothness. It also felt forced, the characters introduced were uneven, not quite solid. I look forward to the next in this series anyways!
The Jeff Resnick Mysteries series is top of my favourites list. This latest one is less dark than the previous. I stayed up at night to finish it. Somehow I can picture Jim Sturgess starring as Jeff. Eagerly waiting for the next book.
Wow. I couldn’t put this one down. It had the most dark characters and downright sad characters and events. Again, as more family members are revealed the plot gets more complex.
L.L. Bartlett has done it again with Dark Waters! The characters and setting come alive and you feel as if you are right there with Jeff, his brother Richard and his wife Brenda in Buffalo, N.Y. Jeff Resnick is a man who almost lost his life in a mugging and the near death experience gives him psychic abilities. This time he is investigating the death of Jack Morrow. Will Jeff's psychic abilities help him or put him in danger?! This story was fast paced, full of action and loaded with suspense. I did not want to put it down once I started reading it! If you love Jeff Resnick you are going to be pulled into this one!!
Another winner in the series. The characters really come to like, not just Jeff, Richard and Brenda, but thee minor characters too. The characters dealing looking within at their possible unconscious racism was intriguing - it didn't take over the excitement of the plot, but helped build to the climax. Love the male bonding at the end.
I like this series, it just needs more, and I can't put my finger on it. I know I don't like how immature Jeff is. Jeff is supposedly a 32 year old widower, yet he acts like a teenager. This book absolutely highlights that immaturity. I did like the story told from Richard's perspective very much. All and all its a fun series to read
The sixth in this great Jeff series, Jeff struggles this time with a family member which seeks to do him in. They end up in a very scary situation, and how they get out of it is amazing. If you've ever been to the river that feeds Niagara Falls, you'll know why it is scary. . . .
This is book 6 in the series and probably one of the best. The Jeff Resnick mysteries are very good with a lot of intrigue. I can recommend this as long as you read the first 5. Otherwise you'll get lost
Long time between reads. The formula has not changed. I like the characters. They remain true to the trajectory they are on. I would like to live next door or be a distant relative.
Another great book! I read it so quick and was kept so into the story that I couldn't and didn't want to put it down. The only bad thing is now I have to wait until another of his books comes out
Loved it! Absolutely hated to finish it. I love these troubled characters. ALways a great story when you hang out with Jeff and his family. One of my very favorite series.
One of my favorite series! I'm not usually a fan of books about people with psychic abilities, but Jeff's are not cheesy. As usual I've read the entire book within a day.
