It is said that it takes a life and death experience for a hardened man to change, if only that means the mistakes and evil will be corrected, but it’s at that end that one wishes to change. But will it be enough to correct the mistake? When is it too late to make a change? This is the reality of Harald the Hardrada. In this, he sets out to the unclaimed land of Iceland and Greenland, leaving behind both his family and his throne, accompanied by his men who wish to follow him and women and children who have nothing more to lose. On this journey, he meets Arnora, a girl who has nothing left in the world, and Orm, who seeks to kill him to avenge his father.
Samoset is a hunter who worships nature and wishes to protect his family from the evil one who has caused him much sorrow while keeping them fed through the winter. How do these unlikely pairs meet in this land? How do strangers turn into allies? And how do they come together to vanquish the evil?
This book between the helpless and the darkness is not just a story of Vikinging and adventure; it is packed with various life lessons. The greed for power that did not go unpunished, the regrets of trying to start life anew, the shadows of the horrible event that never leave you, and the continuous hunger to fill a void that can only be satisfied by forgiving oneself are a few of the many life lessons in the book.
I applaud the writer for giving us a story that is so real with wonderful character development and description of scenery, but I found their mannerism and speech unusual, which makes the book boring most of the time. Aside from that, it was a good book, and I love the quotes before the beginning of each chapter, which give you a glimpse of what to expect from the chapter. I encourage adventure readers to give this book a try.

Between the Helpless and the Darkness by Brent Olson is an engaging read. It is a similar to reading Grimm's Fairy Tales (the original dark ones) and a history book. From both the tales and history, there are valuable lessons to be learned and not repeated. Yet many forego reading the past and end up repeating the same mistakes. This alternate historical fiction book shows lessons that should be learned and avoided at all costs. But still, it's up to the main characters to decide the ending. I love any book that contains historical figures and some history. It makes one live in constant wonder, especially with history involved. What if this or what if that, ...? No one will ever know if an alternate route would have been better or worse until it happens. Brent Olson writes incredibly well. History reimagined brought to life on these pages.

I really loved this book. I loved the characters. The nobility of it all. The incredibly tempting notion that the world could be better. I thought it was imaginative, intelligent, and exciting, and it is the kind of book that catapults you rather than meandering. I also really enjoyed the historical details and thought it was well researched which, for me, makes me feel immersed in the world that the author created. I don't know how to categorize it, to be honest. It is an alternate history, but it is more than that. I really recommend it and hope there are more books to come. It seems like it is could be a fascinating series.

A wonderful tale
This was a saga to compare with those of the Norsemen who form half the people of this book. We follow the Norse who were defeated at the battle of Stamford Bridge on their journey to the new world where they encounter the MiqMaq , and the fledgling nation they seek to build together. It’s a rattling good yarn and a pleasure to read.

I think this is Brent’s best book so far. I’ve read all of his books and although each is a good read this one was hard to put down. The storyline is easy to follow yet detailed enough to keep you wondering what’s next. The characters are so well described that I could visualize each making the story even more delightful. I can’t wait for his next work to be published.

I began this book without high expectations. In the end, I enjoyed reading the book and found myself turning the pages to see what would happen next. There were times when I could anticipate how the story would unfold. At first, I had difficulty keeping straight the many unusual names. As I read on, it didn’t become a problem. The book was very readable. Caution, there was a lot of violence but in my opinion was handled in such a way that it didn’t make me want to put the book down.

A great story imagining lasting encounter between Scandinavian settlers led by the mistakenly-assumed-dead Harald Hardrada and Atlantic coast first nations people. Characters were well developed - you believe the author did research into first nations people in addition to his apparent familiarity with his Norwegian lead. Harald was larger than life. Some laugh out loud moments lighten a story of drawing blood to find peace.
Apparent formatting errors with frequent paragraph breaks in the middle of sentences were the only complaint. I would recommend this book to any fan of speculative history.
