A grumpy dragon, a sunshine princess, and a knight who was definitely not prepared for this rescue mission.
Ronan, golden boy of the kingdom and knight in shining armor, has trained his whole life for the ultimate quest—rescue the kidnapped princess, slay the dragon, and return victorious. There’s just one Princess Imogene does not want to be rescued.
For the past two years, Imogene has been living quite happily in Kazimir the Dreaded’s lair—much to the ancient dragon’s exasperation. She wasn’t kidnapped so much as she wandered in, and now she has a hoard (of interesting rocks), a reluctant guardian (who sighs a lot), and a perfectly good tea setup (which Ronan keeps disrupting).
Now, Ronan refuses to leave without her, Imogene refuses to go, and Kazimir is one dramatic eye-roll away from setting the entire kingdom on fire. But as Ronan spends more time in the cave, he starts wondering if the real danger isn’t the dragon—it’s how easy it would be to stay.
A fantasy rom-com packed with forced proximity, grumpy vs. sunshine dynamics, slow-burn romance, and one very tired dragon who just wants some peace. Perfect for fans of T. Kingfisher, cozy fantasy, and chaotic bonding between knights, princesses, and their slightly judgmental dragon roommate.
I found this book almost by accident, and, boy, am I glad.
If you like cozy fantasy, spunky heroines, bets and vicious attacks (by baby wyverns, no less!), a grumpy, old, long suffering dragon and Beauty and the Beast like libraries , this book is for you.
The writing is full of quips and modern details, but it's also a quick, uncomplicated, sweet read (or listen, if you're like me, and found the audiobook on the author's YT).
The only detail that gave me pause, was the amount of Tell, regarding the Romance between our two leads. There was enough Show, overall, but some things I'd rather read from Ronan or Imogene's (or Kasi!) point of view, and not described by outsiders.
Still, it was a lovely book and an adorable, even if predictable at times, story. Lovable characters, baby wyverns, lots of tea and a warm smile... Personally, I didn't need much more than that.
