I am the author of three novels. My most recent, What She Inherits, was published in January, 2017. My first novel, Watch Me Disappear (2012), was a finalist in the Kindle Book Review's Best Indie Book Awards in the Young Adult category in 2013, and my second, The Latecomers Fan Club (2013), was named a 2014 IndieReader Discovery Award winner. In 2015, I released a brief guide book to self-publishing called The Sane Person's Guide to Self-Publishing.
Angela Ellis is in junior college when her mother dies. Her dad has Alzheimer's and is in care, so her mother’s death has left her flat broke and completely unmoored. When she starts hearing her mother’s voice at night, she is more than a little spooked. The fact that her two college friends staying with her couldn’t hear her mother’s voice just makes it worse. Wondering if she is losing her mind, Angela finds an old school friend who is now running a ghost hunting business. During their investigations, the mystery of her family becomes more apparent.
A thousand miles away, Casey Jones is hiding from life on a small island. Now 37, Casey has a checkered history and avoids all but the shallowest of contact with other people. The only exception is her great aunt Rosetta, who rescued Casey from a desperate life in New York a decade ago. Now running the café on the island for her aunt, Casey receives a letter from her estranged mother, which was posted after her death.
Casey is trying to work out how to grieve someone who abandoned her when she needed her most, and Angela is trying to understand the mystery of her mother’s dead and the spirits that are keeping her awake at night. Neither of them realize that the future for them both will tie them together.
This is a drama about families at its heart. Angela and Casey are equally lost in their own worlds, and yet there is a connection neither of them know. Both are well written characters, with their own issues of grief and own problems coming to terms with their lives.
I really liked both Angela and Casey as characters. It is too easy to make someone who is 20 years old (Angela), appear to be too old or too brash, or even too naïve to work. Mulligan has struck a good balance and made Angela interesting, but not given her a wisdom and experience beyond her years and her situation. Casey is a more complex and more damaged character, and is therefore more of a mystery. This too is well handled by Mulligan.
There is an element of the ghost story to this, but it doesn’t play a large role in the proceedings. It did make sense for the characters involved, without being too over the top. It isn’t a ghost story per se, so don’t think this is a supernatural thriller or fantasy book. It isn’t. Human drama is the strongest element of this book, and it works well because Mulligan has such good control of the plot and pacing, and has written interesting and believable characters.
This was a genuinely enjoyable book.

This is a nice paranormal ghost story that is narrated by two women in different parts of the country. You wonder what these two, Angela and Casey could possibly have in common. Angela is in college when her mother dies. She goes home and is haunted by her mom's ghost. She consults a local paranormal group for help and encounters an old classmate who truly believes her. Casey runs a diner on a small island in Maine and is not happy to find a developer wants to build a resort. Finally the connection is revealed and the two women must reconcile a past so they can enjoy their future. I enjoyed this story very much. The characters are very real and think and act like normal people when confronted by things they can't explain. This is the first book by Diane Mulligan I've read but it's likely I'll be on the lookout for her 4 previous books.
What would you do if everything you grew up knowing, and believe made you the way you were, turned out to be a lie? This book answers that question with one way of how it could happen. This story follows two people, Angela Ellis, a young college student whose mother died unexpectedly and Casey Seaver, a thirtysomething lady who runs a café on a small island which provides the necessary landscape for her to hide from her past and make her own way. Angela is faced with some rather unusual circumstances which makes her believe she is being haunted by her mother's ghost. Casey is faced with the potential need to sell her café and leave her island she loves so much.
I truly enjoyed this novel. This is technically my first Paranormal Fiction I have read that features ghosts and I loved it. The story offered a wide variety throughout: love, friendship, lost-love, family, new-love, and the list goes on and on, PLUS ghosts, but not the spooky, freaky kind (which are not bad) but enough that they figure to strongly in the storyline. The novel had a few typos and missed words here and there and it was easy to figure out the end result as the story builds out, but that is not always a bad thing.
I'm not really fond of books that deal with the paranormal, but I do like a book that weaves two stories together. This story is about two females. The first female is Angela Ellis who is 20 years old, in college and just received the news that her mother has unexpectedly passed away. She finds her way to South Carolina to wrap up her mother's affairs and to check on her Dad who suffers from dementia, lives in a nursing home and has no recollection of his daughter. What she uncovers in her mother's home presents more questions than answers. The second female is CJ (Casey Jones) who lives on an island in Maine with her great aunt and runs a coffee shop/bakery and has received word that the mother with whom she has been estranged for years has passed away. She is a bit of a recluse, has had a troubled past and avoids social media contact.
It took me a while to see how the two stories were going to intertwine (and no their mothers are not the same person), but about half way through it became apparent. There are no big revelations and I felt it could have done with a bit more suspense and a bit fewer attempts to make it read like a romance novel. In all honesty, it wasn't a fantastic book but it held my curiosity enough to want to stick with it to the end.
That being said -- it was the title that intrigued me and started that little voice calling to "read me". The story took me back some 15+ years ago when I lost my father and wrote a poem in his honor "Through My Father's Eyes". I remember taking the time to document all those things he left me even though nothing was of monetary value or were of a substance you could hold. He left me values, love, appreciation for nature, work ethics and a desire to leave a mark on the world. It isn't always about what we inherit in a material form, but what we open ourselves up to receive -- and in return want to pass along to those we hold dear in our lives. There is no greater inheritance.
During her junior year in college, Angela Ellis’s mother dies, and she returns to her childhood home in South Carolina to settle the estate. In her old home, she encounters her mother’s ghost, and strange messages that unsettle her. Enlisting the assistance of a ghost hunter, she tries to decipher the messages. What she learns is disturbing; was Deb, really her mother, or was her entire life a lie? In the meantime, on Devil’s Back Island in Maine, Casey, living with her aunt, is also troubled. Hesitant to make human connections, she lives a life adrift. As Angela learns more about her background, the lives of the two women slowly intersect until they both discover what they lost two decades earlier. What She Inherits by Diane v. Mulligan is an intriguing story that is part paranormal, part coming-of-age, and part epic fiction about human relationships, and the enduring impact they have on people’s lives. The author switches between Angela and Casey in a story that builds the suspense chapter-by-chapter until it reaches a satisfying conclusion. You’ll become so invested in the two women’s quest for closure, you’ll find the supernatural elements taking a distant background role in the story. I found this to be a thoroughly entertaining read. I received a free copy of this book.
I enjoyed this book that was mostly about family and a little about ghosts. There are two stories running parallel. One is about Angela Ellis, a college junior who has come home to sort out her recently deceased mother’s affairs and the other was about Casey Seaver whose mother has also died. I enjoyed getting to know both of the main characters and was satisfied with the way their stories intersected.
Angela Ellis leaves college after her mom suddenly dies and heads home to St. Nabor Island, South Carolina. She has no idea what happens next. After the funeral she starts hearing strange noises in the night: footsteps and her mother's angry voice. Devil's Back Island, Maine: Casey Jones has built herself a life after being rescued years before by her aunt. She runs a cafe on the island and keeps pretty much to herself. No complications, no relationships except for her Aunt, no heartbreaks. Then she receives a letter from her estranged mother with news that her mother has passed away and her mother's letter reveals a dying wish. And a stranger arrives on the island looking to change everything that has made her feel safe these past years. What in the world do these women have in common other than both of them have lost their mothers? This is a story of love and loss, of the complicated and chaotic workings of family, of losing one's self, and the courage to find a way back to what was meant to be. And the trust that you need to let people that love you help you along the way.
This was my first read by Diane Vanaskie Mulligan and I was quite impressed with the depth of the story, and found it hard to put the book down. It is a rather long story as novels go, and I found it took me a little while to get involved in the plot as the chapters jumped back and forth to different characters. As I read on, however, it all started to fall into place. I generally do not read books which have a paranormal theme and I was a bit hesitant when things of that nature started to come out, but I still wanted to find out the ending. The story did have a satisfactory ending, but I found it ended rather abruptly robbing the reader of what might have been a few chapters of 'family happiness' for Angela, Casey, Randy, Brett and Rosetta and a number of others whose lives were affected as the story unravels. I would recommend this book to those who like romance intertwined with mystery and who are not offended by paranormal and a few light bedroom scenes.
The book tells two stories in one. One of Angela, a twenty year old dealing with the loss of her mother and, Casey a thirty something female with a troubled past. Although one surmises that there is connection between the two women as the stories switch between each main character every alternate paragraphs. There are paranormal events which one may not enjoy but is worked for me. These events create the process of bringing the lives of Angela and Casey together. There are twists and turns along the way. The ending was a little wishy washy yet it served for this book. It was well written and an enjoyable read. For once the editing was a little better than a few books I have read lately which adds to the enjoyment of the book you reading.
Imagine yourself being a college junior and your most pressing issue was getting your final project of the semester completed; then to find out your mother suddenly passed away; and then to find out your life was not as it seemed after confronting it head on after hearing paranormal like activity within her mother’s home; Cant discuss it with your father since he has Alzheimer’s; with no known family members alive to help you through your grief, your legal issues and what the “voices” are trying to tell you. I thoroughly enjoyed follwing in this young woman’s journey, along with another woman’s “unrelated journey” through Diane Mulligans words! This great book had me engaged from the very beginning! Loved it!
2 narrators in alternating chapters. Angela gets a number of phone calls while away at college in the North East. When she doesn’t answer, she is tracked down by the office and learns her mother has passed away. Upon returning to South Carolina, a series of strange events take place that upend what she knew of her life. At the same time, C.J., is living on island in Maine, escaping the rest of the world, while working in her own bakery at her aunt’s hotel. Poor romance choices, a new visitor to the island and her life too is changing. At some point their paths cross but it takes much to have them meet. Though I figured this one out early on, it was interesting to see how the author worked this one out.
The storyline wrapping the loves of the characters together was a puzzle I couldn't figure out. Usually I can predict and ending , and this time I couldn't.
I found a few of the relationships slightly strained and off kilter. And the main character was a bit hard to like. I'm finding it hard that the huge secret in the book was kept as it was with the internet and ability to search for people. If one of my sibling just up and left I'd sure hunt them down. Some of the transitions were a bit rushed. I did finish it and didn't skip ahead.
As I finished reading I wondered if I had any idea about this novel's trajectory before opening it... If I did, it certainly did not point to all the twists and turns the story would take!
I loved it.... The descriptions of weather and scenery paint perfect, sometimes stunning pictures, the scenes with people and the interaction between them bring their emotions to life.... in both heart wrenching and love-filled ways... And I appreciated the inclusion of religious and paranormal experiences with all the attendant scepticism surrounding each as regards death, dying, ghosts and the afterlife!
Great read, hard to put it down. Sometime I am not sure I like going from one story (CJ) to Angela, but these two stories came together in a full filling way!!!...I found my self not wanting to leave Angela and go back to CJ.... then I would get wrapped up in CJ .. I didn’t want to leave her. Again I will say a great read. It will keep you guessing what will happen next.. YES I will tell friends to read it.. What made me choose this was the beach .. the series I have been reading was taking place in the Montana mountains... I need to get out of there snowy blizzard and go to the beach!!!
Okay. There are two stories woven together that lead to a heart-felt ending. In her third year at university, Angela Ellis loses her mother and her father's dementia leads her on a quest to learn who she really is. Casey Jones (not her name) is hiding from a teenage wound that just won't heal and Rosetta gently guides her while her own life unwinds as well. Three generations of women will come to know the joy of finding family and unsuspecting love. The author weaves South Carolina and Massachusetts scenery and characters effectively and Angela's paranormal experiences are not overdone. It was a satisfying read and if someone's reading this, give it a go.
This book was a little slow to start for my liking, which caused me to struggle to get a good feel for the characters. It started out with Angela dealing with the loss of her mother. Then switched over to Casey who lives on an island and works in a bakery. These two stories are separate but slowly through the book come together to form one story. The back and forth of the characters and stories made it difficult for me to keep up.
I am sure that readers will enjoy this book, just muscle through the first 100 pages or so before it picks up speed.
In this book the listener gets women's fiction, mystery, romance, suspense, and paranormal all mixed together. Two separate stories with their own characters that seem to have nothing to do with each other eventually come together and make an interesting listen.
The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. Becket Royce brings the story to life.
"I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator."
What She Inherits by Diane Mulligan is an enjoyable contemporary romance with a few paranormal elements interwoven into the story. Considering how many Ghost Hunter-type shows are on the television these days, I thought the premise of the story quite clever.
The story centers around Angela Ellis who suddenly withdraws from college after her mother's untimely death. With her father in an assisted living facility suffering from Alzheimer’s, Angela feels quite alone especially after she starts hearing strange voices in her family home in South Carolina. While visiting her father one day, Angela discovers that her parents held deep secrets and previous lives that she never knew about.
There is also secondary story that alternates with Angela’s story. This one revolves around Casey Seaver who runs a café and bakery in Maine's Casco Bay. It is obvious that Casey was a troubled youth and someone who has been running away from something for the past 20 years. When a developer comes to town with big ideas on how to make the sleepy little island a destination resort, Casey is suddenly awakened from her 20-year slumber.
While the alternating stories seemed to jump around and interrupted the flow of the overall story, I really enjoyed how the two plot lines intertwined at the end. I also appreciated how Angela sought help from a local ghost hunter, who just happened to be someone who admired her from afar in middle school -- that plot line was very sweet and satisfying.
I listened to the Audible version of this story, which was narrated by Becket Royce. She did an outstanding job. Her style is very natural and conversational, and she uses differing voices for each of the characters. Becket had great intonation and pace, and kept the story suspenseful throughout. I received a free copy of this audio and freely leave this unbiased review. In summary, I highly recommend this story to anyone who enjoys contemporary romance, with a hint of the supernatural.
Rather long story Paranormal investigation by daughter when her mother's ghost haunts the house that she died in. Daughter finds out not her real mother but her grandmother. her father was killed in an auto accident before she was born leaving his 17 year old girlfriend at the mercy of his parents. Parents took child as their own making the young girl sign away rights to child. Rather implausible series of events bring two stories together in end and happy ever after love stories.
I don't normally give five stars. But this book deserves it. It's a well written book that once I started reading it, I didn't want to put it down. I only wish it hadn't ended. Hopefully there will be a sequel. I'll pay good money to find out what happens to the characters.
Loved this book. An inheritance is so much more than money and property. Our genealogy contributes more than we notice, but finding our family is of
I loved this book. An inheritance is more than money and property. Our genealogy is so much more than we notice. Finding our family is worth all the effort.
Though I wasn’t thrilled about the ghosts in this story, I stuck with it. I have to admit that the bouncing from chapter to chapter back and forth between characters got me confused a bit, I truly enjoyed this storyline of family coming together after years of lies.
This book is a little confusing at first as it jumps back and forth from Angela in South Carolina to Casey in Maine. Tragedy is mirrored by both women. As the story progresses, it finally becomes clear as to how the two lives are intertwined. I found the story satisfying.
I started reading this book and almost put it down. Once the relationship evolved, it became a great read. I want to read more about CJ and Angela. To me, this was a good introduction to their lives. I want to know more about them as I was moved to tears at the end of the book. The writing was great, very easy to read.
Two stories finally meld in the unusual mother daughter searching for each other. A bit of the psychic thrown in adds quite a bit of interest and tension. The length of time the author took to bring these two plots together was too delayed. Otherwise well written and a good read.
This is a book that keeps you turning the pages, and before you know it, you’ve read it in a day! I loved the parallel story lines and figuring out how they went together, because I knew they did somehow. The characters draw you in until you are going along on their journey, and rooting for them along the way. This one won’t disappoint!
So wonderful. The story is written as two streams of life switching back and forth. And it is a long time before the reason is clear. And then the suspense really tightens up. 2 wonderful lost women, each trying to find their way, unknowingly trying to find their way to each other.
This is a great read about a young lady looking for a family she did not know she had and finding her various relatives. And then there is the mother who gave her daughter up and her story. You keep wondering how these two women come together and who are they to each other. An enjoyable read.
The tale is about two elements of a family being drawn together, through death and discovery. It links into the paranormal and life after death contact. All aspects are beautifully intertwined and the ending is one of understanding and forgiving, a really well written story, thank you Diane for writing it.
