Benjamin

I never imagined I'd get this kind of news. Suddenly, I have a nephew that is an orphan. I can't understand what happened and I still half-expect my sister to walk through the door at any moment. He's never leaving my arms again.

Yet here comes Mr. Big Shot, ready to steal the last bit of my sister that I have away from me. I'll do anything to keep him. Even if that means seducing the guy that disappeared over a decade ago. His Hollywood dreams were more important than us small-town yokels. Wasn't that what he said?

Sure, he's a charmer, but he's not getting my nephew.

Micah

When I donated my sperm to let my best friend and her wife have a child of their own, I never expected that I'd end up involved in their son's life. We'd made an agreement long before the procedure took place and, though I'd wanted to be involved afterward, I had adhered to it. He was their son. I knew they'd take care of him.

At least, until something terrible happened. Now I have to face fatherhood with...him.

God, I've loved him since I was old enough to know what love is. He's never had a clue. Now I'm supposed to cope with him so close, still ignoring what I want?

This surprise baby novel is full of heartbreak and wholehearted affection. It contains steamy scenes that should only be heard by adults. Eighteen and older, please.

What starts out as a very sad scenario quickly blossoms into a unique and creative story. Peter Styles’ novel Unscripted Hearts is not your traditional romance.

The précis is misleading in that it paints Ben as a desperate brother and uncle, willing to do anything to retain custody of his nephew Ross… even seduce Micah, the child’s biological father. Actually Ben and Micah are old friends who come together for the sake of the child. The friendship is rekindled, and the sexual tension grows to the obvious conclusion.

The highs and lows as these two make their way are what make Unscripted Hearts so original. I enjoyed watching the men jockey to get the upper hand as they figure out how to make it all work. In addition to the sexual tension which blooms naturally into smokin’ hot sex scenes, Ben and Micah have great chemistry.

Narrated by Randi Johnson, he does a wonderful job bringing these characters to life. He gives each man a unique personality and it’s clear he really understands their motivations. Mr. Johnson keeps the story flowing smoothly and listening to his warm, rich voice is always a pleasure.

Unfortunately this story did not work for me. This is my first book by this author and new authors are always kind of scary to try because you never know how it will go. I gambled and lost with this one.

Ben and Micah are both dealing with the death of Ben's sister and her wife (they die in a car accident), and the now orphaned Ross, who is simply an adorable 3 year old. The story started to un-rail for me almost from the start when Micah receives a phone call from a lawyer informing him of the deaths, and that because Micah is the biological father to Ross, is now his legal guardian. I am not a lawyer so this is my uninformed opinion - I don't believe that is how custody works - that Micah would automatically become guardian to Ross. Regardless of how things would play out in real life, this situation didn't feel real and made me give the squint eye. I kept going.

And again, issues regarding custody of Ross kept coming up, with both Ben and Micah being told to consult with lawyers/professionals/mediators to arrange full custody of Ross. Micah, who had agreed to donate his sperm to Ben's sister so they and the child would know who their father was, didn't even know his sons name prior to their death, wanted custody of Ross (of course) and loved him. This situation was another strike in the con column for me with this story. Micah's instant devotion to Ross, Ben and Micah never talking about what they are going to do, the plan to keep Ross secret from Micah's family (who know nothing about him), add in the drama surrounding Ben and Micah's relationship - which never felt real to me, and I was not enjoying this story.

I kept listening because of Ross. He was such a sweetheart and seeing him be so happy all the time always made me smile. When he calls Micah dad, ahh, loved it. But in the end, even Ross wasn't able to save this story for me. The narration was great - and also one of the reasons I continued, but I was still on the verge of stopping so often because the story was too much for my liking.

2 stars for the story, 4 stars for the narration (which was a great performance of material that to me was lacking)

When things go terribly wrong, two men come together to put things back together.

Micah and Ben have had secret crushes on each other for what seems like forever, so when the situations line up perfectly and the moment is right...

Unscripted Hearts tackles some tough issues: life, loss, death, drinking, sexuality, and what it means to really put others first.
And it's done really well.

I enjoyed this story. My only complaint is that it was narrated by one person, when I think two would have been better. However, the narrator did a great job of giving everyone a voice.

I liked this a lot, but I would’ve needed a bit of breathing space. As soon as you thought these two guys got it together, they start fighting about something silly. And so it goes.

This was not one of my favorites from Peter Styles. I was hoping for more of a romance between the two MC's but their relationship left me flat. I didn't like how Ben seemed so put together at first and then he turned into a burgeoning alcoholic. I also thought it missed the mark in the fact that they both had crushes on each other in the past, but they never spoke about it. I thought that was a major oversight in the story of them. This one just wasn't for me.

The story was well thought out, with Ben's sister dying and leaving a mess in her wake, including a child who's bio dad, Micah, actually wants to be part of his life. I enjoyed how much Micah wanted to do right by his child and his family and he never once wanted to exclude Ben from any of it. At least one of them had character.

Audiobook review

I learned something today. I learned that I’m strictly a middle road kind of girl – or woman. If you know me, you know that I’m not all that fond of monotone narrators as I tend to space away a miss part of what’s going on in the book. I love it when narrators act out the book. And Randi Johnson sure did that – in a big way. He narrated with passion and enthusiasm; it was plain to hear in every word. Sadly it was just too much for me. I’m the kind of person who can’t just listen to an audiobook, but needs to do something else at the same time, work, chores at home and even read the news. It makes my twitching brain calm and relaxed.

When listening to Unscripted Love I couldn’t. Johnson demanded my undivided attention and I found it difficult to do other things at the same time. It made my brain even twitchier than normal, to the point where both my fingers and toes were curling in frustration. Maybe that could have worked if the book had been worthwhile, sadly that was not the case. I can truly see the appeal of Johnson’s narration and I believe many listeners will enjoy listening to him. Like I said, he sure is engaging the listener. In the end it wasn’t for me.

Then there is the plot….

You know that saying: “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all”. Well I tried that, but I can’t just ignore that hot mess of a plot without any kind of comment. The book started okay – for the first five minutes or so. Then it took a turn for the ridiculous, made a left (cause nothing of what’s going on in this book is right) to the wtf, detoured to the inappropriate and continued down the road of insanity.

Cause in what world is a drunk that can barely stand up right but thinking it’s okay to get behind the wheel of a car sane? And even okay? Said drunk is also responsible for a three year old toddler! And I’m supposed to care about him? I can get behind a lot of things in romances, but drinking and driving – and thinking that’s okay is a hard no for me. It all went downhill from there – I’ll leave what that means to your imagination, I’m sure you’ll come up with something good.

This was another good read by Peter Styles. in this one we have Ben and Micah. They both are now left to take care of a 3 year old boy. After the mother who was their friend died they both grieved in very different ways. Which made it hard for them. Thankfully in the end they got their act together and were able to give Ross the love he needed.

This book started off slowly, but I was relieved to find out it picks up.

What I thought would be a book about two adults grieving while learning to take care of a kid and each other, turned out to be more of two adults falling in love... Oh, and there's a kid, by the way.

A lot of the time the child was there as a plot convenience. That was the case with the side characters too. Actually, here's a list of a few things that bugged me while I listened to this book.

One: the author is trying very hard to tell us how likable Ben is and how much he doesn't appreciate himself. It's very in your face because of how the characters are acting.

Two: characters would sometimes contradict themselves. An example of this is when Micah gets nervous because he needs to fly back to LA for work and Ben reassures him (quoting from memory) "don't worry; everyone has to balance work and parenting", but in the next chapter Ben gets angry at Micah for having to leave, claiming that Micah is irresponsible and doesn't care because he flies off the moment he gets a message from his agent.

Three: the characters sound like characters. Confused?

Let me clarify.

When I'm reading a book, even if it's set in a Fantasy/Paranormal world, I sometimes forget that I'm not reading about real people. With Unscripted Hearts, this was rarely the case with the male characters and never with the females. I don't know if it's the way the women are written or the way their parts are read, but I couldn't connect to a single one of them.

Speaking of the way the book is read: the narrator is better with male roles than he is with females, and I don't mean just when it comes to doing the voices. But again, the lack of connection with the girls could be due to how they are written.

You'd think that with so many complaints I'd hate the book, but that isn't the case. It's not making its way into my Favorites list, but I didn't hate it or even dislike it. It was just something to pass the time with, not fall in love with.

I'd recommend the Unscripted Hearts audiobook to people who want something light (but not humorous) in the background while they go about their chores.

My rating: 3.5/5

i read this book as part of an arc program. This is the romance between Ben and Micah. Ben was twins with Micah's best friend from childhood. When Ben learned his sister was killed along with her wife in a car accident, he took in his nephew Ross. Micah was Ross's biological father, but had never met him. Micah was an actor in Hollywood and was up for the leading role in a new drama for CBS. When Micah learned about the accident, he flew back home to help Ben with Ross and make arrangements to co-parent and get to know his son. Micah always had a crush on Ben, but never knew Ben was gay. Ben was just recently accepting he was gay and learning to deal with his feelings for men. When Micah came to help, they clashed a bit about if Micah was responsible enough to raise Ross. Ben was having a hard time dealing with his loss and was drinking a little too much. Micah had to travel to LA for the show and was back and forth. When Ben kissed Micah, they both admitted they were attracted to each other and wanted to give a relationship a chance, but they had to figure out a way to deal with work and trust issues. I liked this story of an instant family. i think Micah was more responsible than anyone thought and i think he really loved Ross and wanted to raise him. Ben was a little critical of Micah, even thought Ben was drinking and thought nothing of it. This was a good story and i liked how Micah stood up for himself and reminded Ben he wasn't the only one grieving. Another good one from Peter.

I received a free audiobook in exchange for an honest and fair review.

The premise of this story is really good. bringing the two MCs together over the death of the sister/best friend and the care of her child. The timeline of this book was hard to follow, the only anchor point we had was when the funeral was supposed to happen. But then it seemed a couple of weekends go by and then they talk about the funeral happening but don't have a scene of the funeral which seems like missing part of the major story line the importance of the woman in their lives.

Grief does make people act strangely. However to take responsible, upstanding, business owning Ben to the edge of alcoholism in such a short time, seems like a stretch. Also, trying to set the two men up as adversaries for custody of the child just didn't work either. Especially since Micah only thinks about sole custody because of Ben's drinking.

So the execution of this story seemed like it jerked Micah and Ben together, then apart over and over again. There was no building arc to the story line.

The performance of the audio book was okay. About 1/3 of the way through the book I realized it seemed like I was listening to Casey Kasem (a radio personality from the 80's) narrate. Just an observation.

Overall, I was somewhat disappointed in this book. I really really like this author and have read some really great books written by him.

Unscripted Hearts
By: Peter Styles
Narrated by: Randi Johnson

Unscripted Hearts is a well written and well told story of two people brought together under sad circumstances and fell in love. Ben’s sister Lindsey & partner were tragically killed in a car accident, leaving behind their son, Ross. Micah Lindsey’s best friend growing up was the sperm donor and while he never met him was his next of kin. Ben and Micah who secretly crushed on each other did hit it off right away. But they did not see eye to eye on everything, there was a lot of angst & drama between them and issues that needed working out. Their story out the emotions, in addition to the drama there are some sweet moments, loving moments, some fun ones and a few hot ones between the two as they try to work out parenting and their relationship. I recommend this great story there is a lot of heart in it!

I listened to the Audible edition, Randi Johnson is a terrific narrator. He performs the voices of all the characters, brings them to life and gives them their personality. He is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to! Thanks for another great listen🎧

Out of the darkness and into the light. Ben is a hardworking and devoted brother to his sister and his nephew Ross. Due to a tragedy, Ben is now Ross’ caregiver as his sister is killed in a car accident. To add insult to injury, Ben comes to find out that the biological father is alive and the rightful heir to raise his nephew. Micah was best friends with Ben’s sister. When she asked him to be the father of her child, he readily agreed. They left open the amount of contact Micah would have with his child due to Micah’s wanting to be an actor and that he lived thousands of miles away. Micah was never much in the responsibility department so he will have to prove himself. Can Ben let go of the past and give Micah a chance? Will Micah force Ben to hand Ross over to him and leave the state? Can the two find a way to co-parent Ross? This is one well written story that details the anguish that can befall a family. It is filled with conflicts and misunderstandings with an underlying attraction between Ben and Micah. I look forward to reading more.

Audiobook Review:

I kind of struggled with this one. The romance part which is the main thing I read this type of book and others like it for seemed to be more of an afterthought then the main point of the story.

Neither of the two main characters really connected for me. I felt they were constantly jumping to conclusions and blowing up at each other. They seemed to almost constantly bicker. In general their communication just wasn't good and stories in which the conflicts are really just a complete lack of communication are hard for me to get into. I also didn't really feel the chemistry or connection in their relationship.

The narrator wasn't bad though. He just usually sounded super high energy and didn't often change that to match the moment or what was going on. But he did have two distinct tones for the main characters and even a few secondary characters "voices" that were distinguishable and I really appreciated that. He didn't sound too old or young for the part. He did a pretty good job.

This is an enjoyable, at times heart-breaking, story. Ben takes it hard when his twin sister and her wife are killed in a car accident, leaving behind an orphaned son. Then he finds out the biological father/sperm donor, an aspiring actor in L.A. who has never even met the child, was made the legal guardian. Ben is trying desperately to hold onto his nephew, the last piece he has of his sister, and he doesn’t trust Micah’s intentions. Though both men want to do right by the child, they face issues of trust, grief, and logistic distance. There are conflicts and misunderstandings, and hard decisions to be made related to careers and the challenges of parenting a young boy who has lost both his mothers. The attraction both men have long felt for each other resurfaces, but is it enough for them to forge a family? This is a good story with likable characters and a strong plot.

This review is for the audio version of the book. The audio rating was a 4 star.

Ben takes his nephew when his sister is killed. The death is bad enough but now he has to deal with the boys father.

Micah is on the cusp of getting the acting role that will make him a household name. Donating sperm to his best friend and her wife was his good deed. Finding out he is now Ross’s guardian does not bode well for his future plans. His youthful feelings for Ben are also confusing.

Sweet story about making a family in the darkest of circumstances. It was an okay book. Some continuity issues. I like Ben and Micah but didn’t really connect to them as a couple. Ross was probably the best character in the book.

The narration by Randy Johnson improved the story, I liked his interpretation of Micah and Ben, they each had their own distinct voices. He made me want to meet Ross.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I really wanted to like Micah and Ben. I did not because they are both pretty irresponsible and a tad selfish.

Micah and Ben slide into a co-parenting agreement with only a little fuss. Of the couple who pass, the second mom, Katherine, is mentioned here only a few times. Lauren, the sister / best friend is remembered fondly, even though she had secrets that impacted Ben. There is mention of debt and of course the custody issue, but no real plan to deal with either. Things kinda floated around and made me feel as anxious as Ross, the toddler. I am still not quite convinced that they have a plan for Ross or for their relationship. Is it friends with benefits or more? I am not sure.

This book left me a bit confused. One why wasn’t there much mention about Ross’ other mom Katherine, didn’t she have any family? Wouldn’t the couple have a will? Responsible parents would have had one and guardianship setup ahead of time I doubt they’d want an actor who’d have little time for a toddler. Two Ben just lost his twin, didn’t Micah take that into consideration, also Ben seemed like too much of a responsible guy to take to the bottle when he had Ross. Lastly Ross should want Ben and Micah to both be with him as much as possible since they’re essentially taking his mothers place and he’d be terrified of losing them as well. Now for the stuff I did like, Micah’s monk flipping the script behaviour wise, the way Micah fell in love with his son, Ben’s thoughtfulness towards his crew were all awesome points. The sex was just okay.

Benjamin's life is turned upside down when his sister and her wife are killed in an accident, leaving their young son behind. Now, the bio father, his sisters best friend and aspiring actor, Micah, is back in town and the two men need to figure out how to co-parent and to maneuver the attraction between each other. But can they make this work when Micah lives in LA being an actor and Benjamin is small town boy.

A good story, well written and entertaining... with characters you can care about. Benjamin and Micah are sweet and sexy together. Definitely an enjoyable story that gives you some feels.

When wanna be actor Micah got a call from his high school bestie and her wife, he did not expect to become a sperm donor.

He expected even less that a few years later both his bestie and her wife would die in a car accident - and their son would be orphaned.

So how will he deal with a career on the edge of exploding, his crush from high school, and lonely 3 year old he never met?

Poor Ben is the uncle left behind when his twin is killed.

What on earth was Lauren thinking leaving responsibility for her son to absentee Micah?

And how hot is he? And maybe it is ok to have feelings for a guy.

Love Off Script

Peter has written a sweet romance. Second chances. Grief. Becoming a father and gaining a family! It's all here.

When Micah, an actor in Hollywood, learns his best friend has died he's devastated. Learning that, since he donated sperm in order for the women to have a child, now means he is legally responsible for his son, Ross, rocks him to his very core.

Add in the knowledge that Ben, Ross's uncle and the man Micah has always been attracted to, means to co-parent with him increases the sizzle!

Watch two hot blooded, strong willed men reach an impasse, and resolve, their differences...in the best ways possible.

This story had a lot of potential but it fell really short. There were a lot of continuity errors. At one point the Micah and Ben are on the phone (across the country) and then all of a sudden Micah is reaching out to hold Ben's hand, then they are back on the phone. It kept saying that Micah had to go back home by Friday, then earlier, but a whole week passed and he still "had to go back friday". It made it really hard to stick with the story and keep going. The only thing that kept me listening was the narration by Randi Johnson. The performance was well done and pulled me to the end of the story.

Ben's sister and her wife dies and he is left taking care of his toddler nephew. Micah is the biological father and is left as his legal guardian. Ben doesn't want to share and Micah finds he really is having trouble sharing too. Both men have had a crush on the other since forever, but Micah had dreams and took off for Hollywood and never had anything to do with his son. Can these men put aside their differences for Ross's sake and their own? A sweet HEA awaits you at the end of the story. Good book. I voluntarily read and reviewed this ARC book

I like this story but there’s some lack of connection and feelings between characters despite enthusiastic reading from the narrator.
This is what I liked:
No unnecessary descriptions of surroundings
Lots of sometimes good and fun dialogues
The storyline is great and progresses nicely in to HEA.

Narrator:
He reads with passion and intensity but sometimes it’s to much intensity. Pronunciation is clear so I have no complaints about that.

All in all it’s a good 4 star audiobook

AUDIO REVIEW

Great narration!!!

I enjoyed the narrator, so I listened to the end, but I didn’t really like the story.

Ben was a total hypocrite. I understand he’s grieving in is on way, but he was so adamant about Micah being a good father, yet Ben was drinking the town dry.

Micah on the other hand was proving he would be a good father most of the story.

There were a few inconsistencies as well.

I thought Randi Johnson did a great job. Changing the voices for each character was a nice touch and I can’t wait to hear more from him.

I listened to the audiobook version of this book.

This was a pretty good MM romance, but I would have liked to connect with the characters a little more. The loss in the story is kind of tragic when you think about it, but the love between Micah and Benjamic made up for it. Some of the things the characters do doesn't really make sense, but overall it was a nice listen.

I've heard this narrator a couple times now and I think he gives a pretty good performance. I think he was well matched with these characters and his voice was a good added element to the story.

This was a very enjoyable book. I am a massive fan of this author, I enjoy the writing style very much. This was a sad situation that was made better, but it was quite a journey through to try and work through the mines, so to speak. Miach was quite a natural at fatherhood which was pretty kewl.
I definitely recommend this book, it was a very good book quite enjoyable.
