I never believed magic was real– until I used it to kill a werewolf.
Not long after, a letter arrived from a supernatural school for fae, claiming I was a sorceress. I’m forced into a world where dragons breathe fire, griffins fly, alicorns battle and wolves hunt monsters. At this academy, sorceresses are bound to alpha shifter mates, and pagan rituals are used to connect with the gods.
I know my mate is somewhere within the school… along with those who want my blood. A cult of dark magic is following my every move, and I have to master my powers before they come for me…
Ethan
I never meant to kill my own father.
What happened led to the loss of my leg, and my reputation as heir to the throne. I found a way to pay for my sins by playing the role of Prince Ethan during the day, and a vigilante hunting cultists by night. Keeping my secret identity hidden has been far more difficult than I imagined.
But now my kingdom is at stake. A new leader will be chosen through the King’s Contest, a fatal competition where contestants battle for power and, more often than not, die in the process. Without a mate, I cannot compete for the crown.
I formed an unbreakable bond with Emma upon first sight. But I have to keep my love a secret. Emma can’t know she’s my true mate; otherwise, she’ll be in more danger than ever before.
But the King’s Contest is rapidly approaching, and if I don’t choose a mate soon, the fate of my country will fall into the wrong hands…

Ethan, the former prince who lost his leg in a fight where he lost his father only to quit when he comes head to head with his evil cousin in a kingmaker tournament, is a punk! He lies to Emma about being her mate. Lives a double life as a vigilante. Then, he has the audacity to say he is disappointed in Emma for using dark magic to save his life. When she agrees to stop cheating in the last challenge and has to save his life while he whines and trembles in the dirt, he ends up saying he lost the crown because of her bad choice. Seriously?! He would not have made it past the first challenge without her. He was so obviously the weak link. But his entitled princeliness refuses to recognize his failure. What he does admit to failing at is being a good mate because he should have taught Emma to make better choices. Yep. Complete D-bag.
Now, how do these two not becoming king and queen become the topic of a second book? Why would I want to know what happens to these two loser weaklings who, apparently, keep being losers no matter how strong or honorable or in love they become for three more books?
Torture. Torture is what that book sounds like to me.
Since I just finished an entire book filled with conflicts that neither the male or female hero overcome, I’m totally confounded. Defeat does not make for a good book. Especially when that book is within the romance genre. I understand some writers thrive on cliffhangers because they want to put off resolving major conflicts to sell more books. But, honestly, to me, it’s not only manipulative, it’s indicative of low level talent. A talented writer is able to resolve a conflict at the end of each book while concurrently introducing a new one that developed as a consequence of the first. If it takes four books for Ethan and Emma to save the throne from his cousin Elijah, then I began to wonder if the characters and the author may both be inept.
I have read this twice, and have two kind of different reviews lol:
First read 2024: “The wolven mark” is the first book in the series “University of Sorcery”. It is a part of the “Hidden Legends” collection. This book is basically a copy-paste of “The Fire Prophecy” (the first book in another series in the “Hidden legends” collection). Just this time it is about sorcery and fey - and with fated mates and a fight for the crown. Luckily I loved “The Fire prophecy”, and I loved “The Wolven mark” even MORE! I love the characters - especially Emma’s friends (Odette, Delmare and Kiara). (Just like in my previous review I’d like to mention that:) The concept is basically a YA version of Harry Potter merged with The Hunger Games - this time with an ounce of Twilight and ACOTAR. I love that the “Hidden Legends” collection focuses on physical and hidden disabilities, and it’s awesome to read an epic fantasy adventure with such representation <3
Reread 2025: 10/10 reading experience 6/10 quality book 5 stars obviously ✨✨ I do enjoy this concept a little better than Academy of Magical Creatures, but they are both definitely my comfort reads. And by comfort I mean IMMENSE PAIN. This book is super creative in so many ways. It’s really good representation of various disabilities, as well as it has an amazing story about love, friendship and dismantling a corrupt system. It is definitely a copy paste from AMC, which again is suspiciously similar to Harry Potter and the Hunger Games, but what I love about The Wolven Mark is that the game actually has a purpose here. I like the concept of fighting for the throne, and these characters have so much more to lose. The characters in this book are amazing! I love all of them (ish)! Ethan is actually a tolerable dude (unlike Liam in AMC) and Emma is actually reasonable! And the two girl besties - chefs kiss, love them!! I do miss some queer representation tho… Where is the Jonah double?!?! If you have been reading my updates, you know this was a rollercoaster of emotions 😂 my neighbours must think I am crazy when I’m screaming, crying, laughing and throwing up listening to this😂
I have read a lot of books by this author by this point, this being at least my third series from her and there are two things I have found in all her books- 1)tons of heart-ripping-out-angst due to the emotional turmoil the characters face, and 2)that her endings will always leave me shocked and desperate for more. This book was no exception! Both our main characters were put through the wringer in this story (and me right along with them I was so invested) and after reading the synopsis for the next book it does not seem like things are looking up- and I am so there for this!
I am a HUGE fan of the magical academy genre (trope?) and this was a perfect example of one. I love the world building that takes place here, a whole secret country controlled by this particular magic group that spawned from the fae and can change to animal form- and can earn wings! There was a class system between creatures, wings, royalty and half breeds and it was so complicated and wonderful.
The book was dual narrated by the male and female love interests, which is just about the best way for a romance story- which this was not really (unless you call angst romance) but instead a mystery action supernatural. Anyway, we have Ethan who was groomed from birth to be the next king of his people but a terrible event cost him his father, his leg and his place in society. And then we have Emma, a girl raised in the human world, knowing nothing about this supernatural community, battling a chronic illness and having strange things thrust at her at once. The dynamic between them was captivating and the banter was so fun (the banter between all the characters was great, FYI).
Overall this was just what I wanted and I have a terrible book hangover I am not sure how to recover from. I will gladly read anything by this author my only complaint is that I need to wait for her to write more stories to feed my addiction.
I love this author and have loved so many of her books but this book just left me frustrated with the characters. I actually felt like the 2 characters that kind of bowed out towards the end and missed the final scene when everything fell, sick of them and sick of the lies and sick of the crap. The lies and lack of communication, the secrets and half truths all of it just got old. I understand these are college kids but this made them seem so much younger. I also realize that angst is what feeds the story but this was long and drawn out and then the ending just made me want to scream. He is a Prince who is fighting to win the crown of King for all of the right reasons. She is trying to understand a world she didn't know existed and doesn't know how to navigate. For all of the right reason they become friends but from the start he is lying to her and from there it doesn't stop. While both of them are doing all they can for each other the lies and secrets pile up exponentially while their feelings continue to deepen. And this is their downfall.
Will I read more? Yes because one thing about this author is she will pull a rabbit out of the air, draw me into her stories and make me love characters I would rather choke, like very few YA authors can.

Absolutely fabulous as always. This is the beginning of an outstanding series for sure. Once I started reading, it was impossible to not complete the story as quickly as possible. Don’t miss out, once it’s released.
I dug the story until the ending. Not sure I want to continue with the series. I know secret keeping can build suspense but these characters are just stupid f heads.
I didn't think I would fall in love with this story but I did, you know what kept me going the intirgue and mystery of what might be. I Especially wanted to know what Emma's power would be....Having been from Detroit and not knowing her origins, would she be able to survive in a new world especially with her illness. Would she survive all the trials and tribulations that came with being a sorceress? Would she survive the contest with Ethan to win the Kingdom, she was born to rule?
Ethan has lost his father and his leg and now he has to find a mate within a matter of months in order to participate in the contest to win the spot that his father had, that of King of Malovia. He doesn't desire a mate though, but that is one of the requirments, then he catches site of Emma the outsider who has no knowledge of the way of his people and realizes what his father always told him about mates.. Surely the Goddess would see to it that he was crowned king less the Kingdom is thrown into darkness.
This is a series I have to continue. So much intrigue, mystery and magic, not to mention the surprise at the end. It will surely pull you in like it has me.
OMG this is a most excellent read that you will not be able to put down! Well written this incredible world where dragons breathe fire, griffins fly, alicorns battle and wolves hunt monsters here is an academy and this is where the supernatural, the magical go. With amazing world building this is full of magic, mythology and religion and has so many emotions and I just love Emma and Ethan! Please jump on this rollercoaster cause it’s one hell of a ride! Bring on the next book!!
This book had me gripped from the start, I absolutely loved it. Love, enemies, threat to your life, dragons, shifters, suspense a plenty. Can't wait to read the other books in the series. Highly recommend...
Audio Review: The Wolven Mark (Hidden Legends, University of Sorcery #1) is the first book in this fae academy series. I absolutely loved this new enchanting addition to the Hidden Legends universe. The world building aspect description and settings are well defined and detailed. A supernatural world with character angst and turmoil along with magic and supernatural abilities. A intriguing class system consisting of creatures, half breeds, royalty and wings bringing more adventure to the story. I absolutely love the characters Ethan and Emma and the cute banter between them. A dose of mystery evolving around the phantom. I enjoyed how the author included characters struggling with disabilities and immune diseases. I was drawn in right from the beginning till the very end. A so sweet perfection drizzling through to a stunning bombshell cliffhanger. I'm so looking forward to listening to book two when available.
Kim Reiko, Maxx Pinkins dual naration brought the characters and story to life. The naration was smooth and easy listening.
OMG I LOVE IT SOO MUCH!! FANTASTIC, AMAZING, CAPTIVATING AND JUST PHENOMENAL!! I love the characters!! Emma is my fav badass queen!! She is soo feisty, outspoken, determined, brave and speaks her mind. I LOVE ETHAN!! He is the prince of Malovia and a shifter. He can change into a white wolven!! A wolf with wings!!! His father died due an attack by protecting ethan. Ethan in turn lost his leg and now has a protetic leg (when in wolvenform he has 3 legs). The King's contest is approaching: fight for the throne. To win the contest Ethan must find his mate/marked/sorceress: soulmate and true love!! His mate will become his queen. Ethan however doesn't want love, and because of his missing leg isn't a proper mate/shifter but after his father's death he is determined to win the crown. His coussin Elija who is a wolven too challenges him in the contest, they both hate each other. Lord lucien is Ethan's mentor and helped him with his prothese leg. He is a great warrior and full of kindness!! Emma lives in America. She is an ice-skater and keeps to herself. She likes to be an outcast. She works in her mothers diner. One day she sees a guy in the ice rink and later is attacked by that same guy in the forest but he CHANGED INTO A BLACK WOLVEN!! she retaliated with a beam of blue light!! She killed it!! OMG I CAN'T WAINT ANY LONGER

DNF. I listened to the audiobook version and was not a fan of the voice actors. I also didn't care for the writing. It was hard to tell what age category the author was trying to go for. The male MC was written to seem like maybe older highschool to college while the female MC came off as a young highschool girl trying to hard to be grown up (understandable given the brief glimpse to her backstory and family dynamic). However, especially on the female side, the speech and thoughts of the character seemed young and then all of a sudden bigger words (SAT-type words that are not common in the everyday speech of most teens) will pop out and it just presented a "what was that" moment while reading that did fit with the characters. Story plot seemed interesting but just couldn't get into the plot due to these issues.
This author is either hit or miss for me but since the stuff of hers I like, its straight-up love, I gave it a chance and I am glad I did. The intrigue, the passion, the new world hidden within our own. All of it is amazing and draws you in keeping you enthralled from start to finish. I loved Emma and how snarky and tough she seemed, but inside she was both strong and weak. Kind and cold. She was whatever she needed to be to survive. A trait I admire. Thrust into a world she fits into and does not belong in at the same time she perseveres however she can. Becoming tough when she must, showing weakness when she cannot hold it in anymore. A complex and wonderful character. I cannot wait for book two. (Also huzzah for the chick saving the prince once in a while).
I give this 3 stars because The author's story building is pretty good. There is like no heat. All of the kids are immature as hell. Seriously, they have the maturity level of the first yeara in Harry Potter but these kids are in late teens and early 20s. Also, no steam. First kissing scene in the whole dang thing is at like 70%....I gave up. I was getting to annoyed.
2.5/5 stars for me. Okay, for the real experience. Y'all need to listen to the audiobook, because the difference in the male and female narration is hysterical. The Female Narrator: WOW! We are IN a MAGIC SCHOOL! *high squeaky voice* HI I'M ODETTE! *low voice* I'm the goth girl *different accent* I'm this character and- WOAH A PEGASUS AND A DRAGON! And there are GODS here too!!! Male Narrator: *monotone* My dad died. :/ That sucks. Okay, what I do like is that the worldbuilding is very clear. And I love the three female side characters. I adore Odette and could read a whole book on her, she is my baby. And I have never read an autistic character that mirrored more of what I see in real life than people with different symptoms of the spectrum to where they are less "functional" (mainly The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime) and let me tell you it was a HUGE breath of fresh air. Not that there shouldn't be a representation of those more dependent and heavier symptoms, but to see one who was canonically that way and considered a powerful sorceress who was equal to her peers and who had someone who was madly in love with her?! WOW! On top of being a fun, charming, sweet, likable character?! Heck yes! Speaking of which, the disability representation was awesome and amazing with the two leads as well. However, the reason this isn't rated higher is because of the main characters and villain and certain plot elements. Other than the disabilities, the main couple wasn't that interesting as characters on their own. OTher than ice skating or being royalty and weirdly "honorable" I couldn't tell you one thing about them. So I was kind of "meh" about them getting together. And the villains were really flat. On one hand, we have to understand WHY they are the way they are. Why do Elijah and Gabby want power other than it feels good? Why are they mean? Also, there's something about Gabby being not only just the Regina George of the school who's mean and does social bullying, but as it turns out she's not only the mean girl who has a popular clique she also wants to help take over the world and pledges herself to the evil god. And I went "oh...okay". Way to add nuance to high schoolers. But even, let's say, they were meant to be all evil, no tragedy or backstories or big reason why behind it or why they are what they are, okay. Those are the Disney Villains, the Hades, the Ursula's, the Malefecents, whatever....but those guys are FUN! They are having a blast! They are devious! Or make them like the Batman villains or the Game of Thrones villains who have a lot of personality and color, we know why they are what they are-and they do some reeeeeeally messed up, violent things. If Elijah and Gabby were more nuanced, or they went further, or they were fun or compelling or downright scary and threatening...then I would enjoy them or enjoy what they bring to the story. But no- they are flat, one-dimensional super-powered bad guys who kick puppies for fun (speaking of tropes, everything they do is just one Kick The Dog moment after another- like...WE GET IT). Also, certain plot points are frustrating, like: If Our Heroine Emma could feel the mating bond with the Batman- I mean- The Phantom...why couldn't she feel it with Ethan? Why didn't he tell her earlier? What does Ethan have to lose by finding out that he is the Phantom of Malovia (and drop a chandelier on Elijah's ass and solve everything)- why? I know there has to be conflict, but it goes nowhere. Also- THEY SHOULD HAVE KILLED THEM! They were in the Magic School Hunger games- They should have killed Elijah and Gabby right there. Also, when they're caught, why doesn't Gabby explain that the crone told her if she didn't use dark magic, Ethan would die! And he gets all mad for saving his life so he can have the stupid crown he wanted all of his life. And when Elijah and Gabby are killing and cheating their way through it all too! So yeah, I feel like I don't care enough to read the second book, but it was just kind of a meh read for me except for the worldbuilding and representation.
Note: I received this book from the author and I voluntarily give this review, it is my honest opinion.
The Wolven Mark is the first book in the Hidden Legends, University of Sorcery series and it got off to one helluva start. I really enjoyed this book, I had all the feels, I was happy, angry, embarrassed, terrified, pissed and so much more. I connected with the characters and I couldn't help but love them, especially Odette, OMG I have to protect her and Emma sass reminds me of myself.
The world-building was amazing, it was full of magic, mythology, religion, a mix of cultures and all that with a fae background in a magical academy. Everything was lush, the magic system was interesting along with what was consider cultural norms for this group of magical people, plus their mythology which had a pagan based was very compelling. While I did have problems with some of the dated traditions about social class and such I did enjoy a lot of the traditions these magical beings have practiced.
Megan has created not only a varying magical world but she has a good representation of people that are outside of the social norm. This group of misfits has many different ranges to prove that not everyone is alike and while people can be different they can still accomplish such great things.
I did have a few problems with the book, one being that somethings seem contradictory to each other and that was a little confusing. Another thing was Ethan's attitude toward Emma at times, I think it was a little too harsh at times and doesn't seem to fit with what he was thinking and feeling, something about it is off at times. Other than that I enjoyed the story.
The story is told from multiple perspectives, one being Emma and the other Ethan, they are the main characters and everything revolves around them and their amazing group of friends. Emma is brave, determined, stubborn, sassy and smart while Ethan is driven, determined and an overall good guy. I love these two but both drove me crazy with keeping information from each other and them misinterpreting things, they are one of those couples who you just wish would just get their act together already.
The Wolven Mark had an amazing story that I kept me hooked. I was really excited to see what would happen next, to figure out where the overall arc of the story was going and what would happen at the end. As for the ending that was a major plot twist, I didn't see it coming and I really need things corrected in the next book. I have so many questions about so many things and I am worried, so very worried about this group of misfits that I have become attached to. I am just going to have to suffer because the next book, Dragon Oath isn't gonna be released for a while.
I could not finish this book. I read another series by this author and the disappointment of that series alone should have made me steer clear. I have a huge problem with the follow through with the plot.
The unsuspecting, long lost heroin of an entire race, is selected for a magical quest that has a sad streak for its previous chosen. Queue in Philoctetes’ “One Last Hope” from Hercules and you get the picture. She bonds with two people, a bold vigilante, and a controlling prince. They are meant for each other as they hide more from each other than they share. They agree to an arrangement to allow him to participate in the tournament, in an effort to make him king.
She leaves home and she never calls her mother.. but they have cell phones. Then her mother permanently MOVES her entire life back to the city and then tells her the truth only when she had done so. At the precise time, everyone else would figure it out because eod her preference.
Her mother and her look so much alike, it is obvious to think some people have already figured out who “the outsider” is related to. Again, making no sense why her mother swore her to secrecy.
And in all the crazy, all the attacks, she NEVER turned to her mom for help. And her mom reveals she knew at her birth they wanted to sacrifice her, but yet told her nothing once she went to the school? No tips? No friends of her father to watch out for her, nothing???
The main character is also another cliché heroin destined to be the most powerful of all time while being a fearless petulant brat.
Fast forward to the near murder and clear attempt on her life in her dorm. After that incident, she traipses straight back there as if. She. Would. Be. Safe… she wasn’t given extra security on her floor, by the school. Nothing.
She has a debilitating disability that effects her physically. But yes, enter her into a death tournament with the sadistic claw as contestants.
I stopped once she revealed she had brought the necklace of decaying souls as if blood sacrifice is only wrong when the sacrificed power does not help her cheat! WTH!
Ugh. I want some brain cells back
If a magical quest, mystery and twists and are what you are looking for, I think you can still enjoy the book. Be forewarned that your patience and pure aggravation is the only ticket to this adventure so Buckle-in !

First, I want to say thank you to the author who provided the audiobook code in exchange for an honest review! I'm sorry it took me so long to finish listening to it, but I did finally manage to get my Author's Direct app working properly. This story is told through two different points of view and switches between the two main characters by chapter, so the audiobook had a male and female narrator reading these, which I loved. It made it easy to remember who we were following in the story just by listening. This was especially good when I had to take longer breaks and wasn't quite sure where I was when I restarted the audio. Both narrators did a great job adding depth to the characters and gravity to the story. Overall, very enjoyable to listen to. And I loved the story concept! If you like stories about someone who is raised one way and then discovers something strange or crazy about themselves because of all the secrets that have been hidden from them, and then throw them into a school for magic as well, then this is something you need to read. One caveat though. Emma, the main female protagonist, really likes to curse. Like a lot. For every situation, big or small. And a lot of it makes sense for how her character is built. She's a sassy, no nonsense young woman who has had to overcome some massive challenges in life. That brings me to another awesome part of these characters. They have flaws! Our characters have a variety of social and physical disabilities that factor in to their thought processes, morals, and decision making skills. Emma is diagnosed with a disease that she will have to deal with for the rest of her life and affects her stamina. Ethan loses a leg at the very beginning of the story. Some of the side characters also have to deal with ridicule based on something outside of their control. The diversity is amazing. Before I wrap up, I have to point out something that didn't work for me personally. Both main characters. There were a couple of (very spoilery) sections when Emma or Ethan would logic out a decision that made sense to them and plan accordingly, only to do the exact opposite when the opportunity arose. With no good explanation. This was so frustrating a couple of times, I had to turn it off and walk away. I am very interested to see how this story progresses since it looks like it might be a planned trilogy. The second book is available now and it looks like the third has a release date. The end of book one took a fascinating turn right at the end, and I'm excited to see what the author does next!
Megan Linski's The Wolven Mark: Hidden Legends: University of Sorcery Book 1 is filled with wonderful characters, and some not so wonderful. The world building is superb. An example is the beautiful descriptions of the history and special ceremonies of these Fae descendents - detailed and picturesque, all while holding your interest.
This is a typical good vs. evil scenario featuring university students, thrown into a fight to save their kingdom from the evil forces that would destroy it. What would you be willing to do to ensure evil did not ascend the throne? Would you access dark magic to accomplish your goal? If you failed your mission and your worst nightmare came true, what then? This is the delema our main characters and their friends find themselves facing
Prince Ethan lost a leg and his father the King was killed while battling the monsters that surround their kingdom. To continue his father's legacy, Ethan must prove himself still worthy of the throne, even if he is crippled.
Emma just found out she has an incurable illness, and her life in Detroit has been a lie, oh ya, and she is not really human. She is an Arcanea from Malovia, a magical and dangerous kingdom. To help stave off her disease she relocates to Malovia and the University. Now she is in a totally new environment without family or friends and magic all around her.
Lots of magical action along with self growth, devastating secrets from the past and lots of political manipulations to keep you turning the pages. No HEA or steamy scenes, just lots of YA desires and misunderstandings.
After the surprise ending, it's going to be difficult waiting to find out what happens next for Emma and Ethan.
I received an advance readers copy and am leaving my voluntary review.
>Book Review – The Wolven Mark >I am an independent reviewer. This book is the 1st in the Hidden Legends: University of Sorcery series and ends in a cliffhanger. Emma is ready for collage and told she isn’t human, explaining why she was able to use magic to kill a creepy guy chasing her. The college is for the Fae. There are shifters and sorceresses attending this college. Emma is way behind, as all of the other students know about their magic. Emma has to find her magic, along with trying to use it. The other reason for the college is for the Fae to find their true mates. >Prince Ethan realizes his mate is Emma, but is unsure if she is worthy to be a queen. The story gets weird when Ethan decides to become a vigilante, trying to keep the college town safe from monsters. He is known as The Phantom. Emma meets the Phantom and realizes he is her mate. She doesn’t know Ethan and the Phantom are one in the same. I didn’t understand why Ethan wanted to hide his alter-ego from Emma. In the book he says he wanted Emma to fall for him and not just be affected by the mate bond. Isn’t that how the mate bond works though? >There is an exciting and deadly contest to choose a new King and Queen. Emma and Ethan compete against a truly evil pair. Emma is foreshadowed to die in 4 years’ time. She also has an incurable immunity disorder. In fact, this book has a lot of special circumstances, like prosthetics and autism. This book is appropriate for a new adult audience. I am giving this book 4 stars.
The portrait of the fascinating Malovia is vividly painted. The scenery, the diversity and the culture are so well portrayed that they can actually be visualised.
Emma lives in Detroit and one day she is attacked by a strange creature and realises that she can use magic. Not that she believes that magic exists. Then she receives a visit offering her a place in a supernatural university. Just like that, her world changes. Destiny awaits.
Ethan is the prince of Malovia and to date, he hasn't found a mate. He has lost his dad and a leg through a supernatural attack. He is the heir to the throne, but cannot enter the competition to determine who will be the next king. He needs a mate to be eligible.
Emma is adjusting to this new world. She has made friends and she has also bonded to a mysterious shifter. She becomes friend with Ethan who is leading a double life. He is keeping secrets. He assumes that he is protecting her from those who want the throne. Little does he know that she is already a target for dark purposes.
It's a fascinating world of shifters and sorceresses. Magic rules. Emma's incessant comparison of herself to others gets frustrating. Ethan's secrets and deception don't make an ideal relationship. The secrets are the main parts of the story, but wear a little thin after a while. Although they have a strong bond, their secrets get in the way of making this bond credible. The cliffhanger changes everything. It's a good storyline.
I don’t know that I want to finish this book. I wanted to like it. I like the magical college trope, I looove fated mates, there are alicorns, all good things.
There are also many pieces that I don’t love. For instance if you’re going into a magical contest in which many people don’t survive wouldn’t you want to know what the contests are before the morning of the first one?! How were they not discussing this before? Where was the training?! Is Ethan so overconfident that he didn’t feel the need to prep Emma at all?
Their romance is also bugging me.
There’s a lot of slow world building in this one. So much information on magic and the shifters and the gods and just slow information overload. There’s not that much action. It’s a lot of school and information in the first 80%.
Also, and this one’s on me, I took a peak at the description of the second book. I was looking to see if the whole series was the same characters or if each book had a new main character. It’s kind of made me anxious.
I’m probably going to move onto a book/series that gives me less anxiety.
This book wasn’t too bad, except for the ending. The ending really irritated me! I know that not all books have happy endings, but I did not expect this ending to be so irritating. I thought Emma was a very interesting person. Even though she was young, she seemed like she was a little bit more mature for her age. Even though she found out she had a disease that wouldn’t necessarily kill her, but it would make her weaker did not stop Emma from doing what she wanted. Her mother kept a lot of secrets from Emma and Emma is just finding out that magic is real and that she’s a sorceress and she will have a werewolf mate. The only things I did not like about this book was the fact that some of these characters in this book acted a lot younger than they really were, the villains were very villainous, and Emma got fixated on the phantom and could not see that her mate was right in front of her. Then, of course, her mate did not want to tell Emma that he was the phantom because he thought he would put Emma in danger. This part was like reading a comic book. The book did get better when they started doing the challenges for King. I’m not sure whether I’m going to read the next book in the series or not though.
Loved this book. I listened to it as an audiobook. I liked both narrators. They had a girl for the FMC and a guy for the MMC. If you like stories with supernatural characters this one is for you. I like how the setting is a collage for all the different creatures to go to learn and find their mates. You have Wolvens who are like wolf shifters but have something that sets them apart. You have Dragons, Griffins, Alicorns who are like unicorns but they have something different that sets them apart. You also have Sorceresses. Some of our characters have disabilities. I like that in a story because it makes them more real. You can relate to them more. Emma finds out about this whole other world. She’s going to the academy. She’s going to learn how to be a sorceress. She’s going to find her mate. Ethan is the prince. He’s also going to the academy. He’s a wolves. He’s also going to find his mate. He needs his mate to help him win the kings contest. He needs to win to so he can be the next king. Emma makes new friends. She also meets and befriends Ethan. Ethan knows Emma’s his mate. But it’s too dangerous for her to know. Ethan must pick a mate before the kings contest. Will he pick Emma or will he pick a new mate? Read the book to find out.
