A complicated thriller that was a little bit Ally Carter's Heist Society and a little bit Bourne Identity! Intense, twisty, and twisted, taking on a lot of big ideas and covering a lot of ground very fast, my big complaint is that I wish she had spun this out over a trilogy, or even two books, so that we could see a lot more of the gears turning. I shall say no more, lest there be spoilers!

Wow wow wow. What a whirlwind!
Okay, so even though I read the premise, I still had no idea what to expect. This novel reads like a superhero-meets-heist-meets-thriller and it was something I didn’t know I needed haha. I guess I like thrillers now?
As for the content itself, this book deals with heavier themes; i.e. human trafficking and abuse, but there is so much hope laced throughout the story that it doesn’t dwell on the darkness. And nothing is graphic!
And the characters are all so well done! I love Josephine and Kai 🥹 and Red 😭 and there was one scene toward the end of the novel that made me tear up.
And the way this story ended?! All I can say is I’m so glad book 2 arrives in the mail today haha.

This book was such a breath of fresh air! I absolutely love it when the female protagonist of a story is kickass, tough and resilient. I look up to such characters and aspire to be like them. And Jo gave me all of that.
The plot is pretty twisted and complicated, but not for a second did I lose it. The strings are various but they aren't entangled. So the ride ain't that bumpy as the blurb might suggest. Emotion is the bigger counterpart of the action that manifests eventually in the story. Jo's character grows in ways you wouldn't see coming, which was a pleasant development. This reminded me of the movie Safe very lowkey, but the stories are completely different. The protagonist in the movie could memorize any number, but Jo here visualized the world in numbers! So you get the difference. (How I wish I was 1/4th the prodigy that Jo is. Okay, even 1/4th would be too much 🤭.)
The loved the narrative. The arrangement of the plot across Seattle and Shanghai was pretty exciting. It ensured that everything turned out to be exotic and thrilling. I haven't been to either of the places, so I was in for quite an adventure.
Calculated by Nova McBee is as enthralling as it sounds, and as you read it, it only gets better! Another pointer is that there's a second book that’s already published and out in the world for everyone to devour!

I was so surprised by how much I loved this book! I've always loved The Count of Monte Cristo, and Calculated definitely gave me those vibes, YA style.

Calculated is one of the most original stories I've read in a long time. Not only is the setting unique (Seattle meets Shanghai), but the plot intriguing, and the characters relatable and lovable.
Nova's writing portrays a very accurate picture of modern day China and America but through a fresh new lens. I definitely recommend this incredible read!
One warning: make sure you have time before buying this book because you won't be able to put it down...

Oh. My. Word!!! How have I waited so long to read this, I’ll never know!
This story is so action packed and adrenaline pumping, with more on the edge of your seat moments than I could count! I’m glad I have book two on my kindle, ready to go, because that cliff hanger was horribly rude 🤣

I’ve been interested in this book ever since it was published in February, and several of my favorite authors gave glowing recommendations. And it ended up being really good!
It took me a little while to get into the story, but about halfway through I was hooked. (The first half was interesting, too, just a bit slower-paced which is not necessarily a bad thing. It enabled the author to create a believable lead-up and flesh out the necessary backstory.) The second half, especially, was fantastic. The plot is excellent: engrossing and intriguing. I also really enjoyed spotting a few similarities to the biblical story of Joseph (the parallels are a little more evident later on). The way the past and present stories were combined made for a unique, enjoyable reading experience as all the puzzle pieces started to fit together. Calculated is a prime example of an story that uses flashbacks expertly and effectively!
Even though I'm not a mathematics fan in the slightest, it was unique and highly enjoyable to read about Jo and her jaw-dropping gift with numbers. (Even for those of us who are not naturally math-minded, like me, the author writes it so that it’s completely understandable!) The author is incredibly smart and did impeccable research to bring her novel to life. I absolutely loved the way she wove in the different cultures, and the settings were vivid in my imagination. And her characters were well-rounded, complex people.
The themes, too, were timeless and excellent: money can’t satisfy, love trumps revenge, friendship, justice and doing good, rescuing those who cannot speak for themselves, etc. These were explored very tastefully and were very thought-provoking.
I liked many of the characters, too. It was also lovely how Kai helped thaw some of Jo’s cynicism, bitterness, and distrustfulness. Kai did seem to me to act quite a bit older than eighteen, and the romance felt a bit rushed to me, but it was still quite nice.
Overall, Calculated was a great read. I’m looking forward to reading the sequels so I can see where the story’s heading!
∞ content: a couple uses of h***, kissing, mentions of prostitution and trafficking, violence (including against teens), drinking (basically lots of criminal underworld stuff, although it’s handled tastefully and isn't horrifyingly graphic) ∞

Oh gosh! Some books you wish you wrote and this is no exception. But there’s no way anyone but Nova could write this. Her depiction of Seattle and Shanghai are so realistic. And Jo is such a believably smart character who you want to root for, whether she’s seeking understanding, revenge, love, or freedom. I didn’t want to story to end and I’m so glad there’s going to be a sequel!

I absolutely loved this book.
I was stunned at the character development, the exciting plot, and once I realized what major retelling this was, I saw a few twists coming, but it was so satisfying and had me in tears at the end.
There's also a minor retelling mixed in. It was super satisfying noticing the retellings without knowing ahead of time so I won't mention them here in case I spoil it for someone else.
I loved the perfectly sweet inclusion of romance which never crossed the line into too much for YA.
And even though this book had heavy content (trafficking, death, grief, assault, betrayal, etc), it was all written without too much gory detail or darkness and didn't overwhelm the elements of hope, redemption, forgiveness and family.
I am excited to read the rest of the series and I think Nova McBee will likely become one of my favourite authors.

If you told me this book had so much math in it, I wouldn't have read it. XD
While there was math and facts and financial stuff, it didn't overwhelm me and it was really cool seeing it through the protagonist's eyes. It was good to have in it.
This book has:

*Carmen San Diego but she is actually evil vibes
*China vibes
*kind-hearted philosophical thinking mentor
*betrayal and healing
*dark world (sex trafficking, almost a bad thing happening to protagonist) - but hope too

Много прилична идея с хлапачка-цифров гений, попаднала в лоши ръце. Но непоносимо изпълнение! Авторката през цялото време се опитва да измисли по някоя неочакваност, но не владее даже най-най-базисното ниво на занаята си. Сегашният YA жанр и без това не става за над 13 годишна възраст по нашите ширини, а това тук е и зле написано.
Иначе корицата на родното издание е супер, от това издателство пускат порядъчно свежи заглавия.
Много прилична идея с хлапачка-цифров гений, попаднала в лоши ръце. Но непоносимо изпълнение! Calculated is a gripping, fast paced story that had me on the edge of my seat. I found myself rooting for Jo as she journeyed through the lows and highs of vengeance and redemption. Author Nova McBee does an excellent job of putting the reader right in the thick of things! I’m looking forward to book 2. -Hilary Magnuson

I'm glad to have stumbled upon this underrated gem. The main character, Josephine Rivers, is a child prodigy with a knack for numbers. Mathematics is hidden all around us. Josephine's ability to physically see equations in her surroundings or when she thinks of a situation and calculate them in real time lets her make perfect predictions and take precise decisions. This makes her a target of a criminal mastermind who wants to use her powers for profit.
The book was intriguing from the first page. Shifting the narrative between the past and the present made me hooked. The author manages to subtly weave her knowledge of China into the story. I particularly liked the emphasis on the number 8 and infinity. The character growth, the setting and the philosophical quotes made it an interesting read. It was quite fast paced and did not feel like almost 400 pages.
Even though the story contains heavy subjects of human trafficking, kidnapping, death, abuse and betrayal, it manages not to be graphic. Meanwhile, a wise old friend of the the main character who acts as her mentor teaches her forgiveness, redemption, justice and hope during her dark times. This brings a balance to the story.
This book resolves the main conflicts and can be read as a standalone, except for the cliffhanger epilogue. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading the next one in the series.

"We are all a mess of complicated layers, some painful and some truly beautiful."
Calculated is a novel full of high stakes, many timelines, and characters that pull you in. I loved the premise of being able to see numbers, the complex plot that only kept growing, and the way that Nova McBee gradually released information.
I didn't particularly enjoy the ending, but I would overall recommend this book! It is to be noted that some of the criminal activity in this novel would be best for older readers, so I'd personally say 16+

I was fortunate to read an early version of this book, and I can’t recommend it enough. The pacing is excellent, the characters jump off the page, and the story grabs hold of you and doesn’t let go until the very end. Add this one to your must-read list. You won’t be disappointed.

I finished the book in 3 days which is very fast for me. I loved the plot and the changing time sequence. There is barely described kissing in it and a beautiful slow burn relationship. Overall, I loved cheering on the MC.

All she knows is she wants revenge to let loose on the people who ruined her life, and she knows just how to get it—and justice.
Based loosely off the biblical story of Joseph, this is a heartbreaking, but strong story that absolutely entranced me.
things I did like about this book:
🌃narrator was awesome, I liked that her voice sounded younger and I could actually picture it as Phoenix herself
🌃even though this could *maybe* be interpreted as a current day story, I thought of it way more as futuristic (even dystopian in some aspects) which made it super interesting to me!
🌃kai is so sweet, so so sweet. I LOVE his patience and the fact that he just wants to get to know this broken girl and be a friend to her.
🌃the healing that phoenix is starting to experience makes me so happy and proud
🌃even though this is such a heavy book, Nova McBee still manages to weave in humor, light-heartedness, love, redemption, and forgiveness.

Mc gets kidnapped, held captive, exploited for her talents, and is physically abused and tortured if she disobeys. An adult man harasses her, makes catcalls and comments, and eventually attempts to sexually abuse her when she’s exposed in a swimsuit but she escapes before he can do anything to her.
Mc is told during her captivity that her family died.
Mc is sent to an underground prison where she’s exploited for her talents again. She aids in illegal activities, but doesn’t want to

gosh where do I start?
Mc gets kidnapped, held captive, exploited for her talents, and is physically abused and tortured if she disobeys. An adult man harasses her, makes catcalls and comments, and eventually attempts to sexually abuse her when she’s exposed in a swimsuit but she escapes before he can do anything to her.
Mc is told during her captivity that her family died.
Mc is sent to an underground prison where she’s exploited for her talents again. She aids in illegal activities, but doesn’t want to
A father figure to the mc dies in her arms
Mc is never trafficked, but both of her two captors are major traffickers, one being the biggest trafficker in the world.
Later the mc works to rescue some of these girls, and they’re very abused and neglected.
There’s fist fights, violence, rebellions, trespassing. There’s a few kisses, nothing too detailed.
No language.

Our protagonist, whom we meet as Double Eight but changes names throughout the story, has a unique gift that enables her to do mental calculations pretty much without thinking- she sees the world in numbers. Because of her gift, she graduated with a PhD at the tender age of 15- but, unfortunately, that’s landed her in the sights of some Bad Guys, who want to use her for their own nefarious devices.
The way that the protagonist’s math gift worked was super interesting. The story is set in China, which is a pretty unique choice in terms of setting (at least for the books that I typically read), so it was a breath of fresh air to experience a different culture. In a way, this is also a (very subtle) retelling of a familiar Biblical story, which I didn’t pick up on until a ways into the book- The romance was low-key and sweet, and I enjoyed it- the focus was on saving the world first and boyfriends second, which is a very refreshing change from the typical YA fare.
Overall, would recommend.
Side note: After reading reviews of the next installment, I’ve decided to enjoy this book as a stand alone and not continue the series. Unfortunately, it sounds like a love triangle is introduced in the next book, and I’m happy with where the romance and plot is left in this book. 🤷♀️

⭐️4.5- This was a new type of book/genre for me. Much more action packed than I normally read. I really enjoyed the fact that the action kept me going but wasn’t too fast that I felt like I missed what happened. I also enjoyed that while touching on sensitive topics (human trafficking), the author did not make it graphic or too detailed that it left me too emotional. Great story, great characters. Left me interested in continuing the series.

Ok ok I love this book! It’s a gripping, fast paced, all the feels story! You get so hooked on every character and I have so many favorites! I can’t wait for the next one!!

Series Info/Source: I thought this was a stand alone book but it must be the start to a series based on the ending. I got this as an eGalley from NetGalley to review.
Story (4/5): I enjoyed this book. It's about a young girl (15ys old) who is a math/economic prodigy and gets kidnapped to work for a Chinese crime ring. She ends up being in a unique position to help save the world economy. Initially the book bounces between her childhood past and her past in the crime ring. Then it switches to her present day self and her past in the crime ring. There are a lot of fun twists and turns and I always enjoy reading about prodigies and the way they see the world!
This did get a bit slow mid-book but most of the story is very fast-paced. This looks like it's going to be the first book in a series which I did not realize when I picked this up. I wish publishers/authors would be more up front about that. While the book resolves the main issues presented, it leaves the reader on a huge cliffhanger to kick off the next book.
Characters (5/5): I absolutely loved the characters in this book, they are all complex and have so many secrets. Even the side characters are interesting and well done. Jo goes on such a ride through this story and watching her use her skills as a math/econ prodigy was absolutely fascinating. I loved her mentor Red and really enjoyed Kai as well.
Setting (5/5): I loved the setting in Shanghai, China. I have never been to Shanghai and am enjoying traveling to new and exatic places in my books since I can’t do so in real life right now. The insight into how some things work in China and some of the tunnels and other lesser known areas was fascinating and I really loved it.
Writing Style (5/5): I loved the way the book was set up and how we bounce from past to present until the story starts to come together. This was easy to read, incredibly hard to put down, and action packed. There were so many fun twists and turns and they never felt contrived or unbelievable. I thought this was incredibly well done and can’t wait to read more from McBee in the future.
My Summary (4.5/5): Overall, despite a slow section mid-book, I really loved this. I love reading about prodigies, and really enjoyed how well done the characters were and the exotic setting. The twisty plot keeps you engaged and thinking, but is written in such a way that the book is effortless to read. I absolutely loved this and am actually happy it is a series, even though I wish that it had been marketed upfront as a series. Recommended to those who enjoy fast-paced twisty turny plots and relatable characters; comparing this to the Count of Monte Cristo is very accurate it really has a similar feel to that story at some points.

Topic or themes I saw: This story was packed with so much goodness. So many lessons. Bitterness and freedom, Identity and destiny, Purpose, being loved for who you are (not what you do). Revenge vs justice. So many great thoughts wrapped up in this story. Trust vs logic. And a whole lot of calculations in the best kind of way!

Story: Wow, I loved this novel for so many reasons. The way Mcbee strategically tied all the elements together was fabulous. It was the perfect balance between plot and character-driven. And I loved how she used a Bible story as inspiration for a few scenes. That was really cool.
This story is about child prodigy Jo Rivers. At the age of 15 she gets taken. She is forced to use her gift to help bad people succeed. But then she meets Red. I adored the scenes with him in it. Red helps her see the world in a different light and sets her on a course to redeem her pain and purpose.
I don’t typically read this genre but oh how I loved it this story. Highly recommend.
I listened to this one on audible, and while I do love listening to some books and audio, I think this is one I would’ve preferred to read myself. Toward the beginning until around the middle, it felt like at times the narrator seemed to miss the emotion I would have personally assigned to the voice 🙃. But other than that she did great.

I read and reviewed this book when I first started bookstagram over a year ago, and it needed a major update!
This was a fast-paced YA story with a mix of Sci-Fi, mystery, and suspense! I really enjoyed the plot, character development, and themes of forgiveness and redemption. Jo/Octavia/Double 8/Phoenix is a relatable character with her struggles, growth, and finding how to stand on her own. There is a slow friendship to romance on the side that I think many will like and enjoy. This book isn’t classified as Christian fiction specifically, but I loved the subtle nod and modern undertone to the story of Joesph in the Bible.
Many moments in this story will leave you on the edge of your seat, rooting for the characters, wanting to see justice for the criminals, and not wanting to stop reading to know what will happen next! Nova McBee incorporates the topic of human trafficking, conveying the criminal masterminds without showing anything graphic or descriptive. I thought the author did a great job of touching on this topic while leaving it appropriate for young adult readers.
I highly recommend checking this book if you like a unique, fast-paced, thrilling story! This book is being made into a movie, so just another reason to check out this book✨

A remarkable YA debut that is at once thrilling, heart-pounding, and ultimately hopeful.
I went into this book with curiosity and anticipation. The blurb didn’t categorize it easily, and the mention of a retelling made me hesitantly hopeful. Now, after having finished this story, I can say this blew away all my expectations. My thanks to Net Galley, the publisher, and Nova McBee for this e-arc!
The main character is absolutely compelling and undergoes one of the greatest character journeys I’ve read recently. The exploration of her gifting is specifically intriguing and well done. In addition, the plot is absolutely packed with action, relationship development, and the perfect amount of backstory. I particularly appreciated the way the author wove philosophical ideas into this thriller, which developed much deeper themes in this story.
Based on what I’ve read from the author, this is the first in a trilogy. If so, it does an excellent job of being completed as an individual story, while leaving many questions to answer in future books.
Overall, a fiercely original and hopeful story.

So many twists and turns, a touch of romance, and a good dose of Chinese history and culture. I couldn’t put it down but fell asleep reading it once. (not because it was boring but because I stayed up so late reading it!)
Highly recommend and oh boy, there’s a cliff hanger! Can’t wait for the second book!
