Just bad. Juvenile writing, unbelievable, immature characters and dialogue, rushed, and nothing makes sense. It's only been a few years since the apocalypse or whatever happened, and yet they act like they have no resources or food or anything even though most people died, so they should have a ton of food and houses to stay in. Packaged food and gas can last years so I'm confused why it's all expired?

Then there was too much drama for me. Hero doesn't find her like he said he would, and he ends up going to the safe place his family knows of and gets a new gf who is psycho crazy. So overdramatic. Can't stand any of the characters. It's like a badly written fanfic of "The Host".

Started out so promising and then it just got very messy and almost unreadable.

Also, our strong female character became weak and was injured constantly and needed people to care for her in every other chapter.

Annnnddd I hate love triangles. I'm out.

Lillian and her baby try to survive after the apocalypse, hiding from zombie like beings called the Infected. She meets James, a young boy surviving on his own, and together they try and find a utopia he was told about a long time ago, hoping that his family went there after the apocalypse and where they can meet up and all live together safely and happily.

What I liked about this book was the concept – an apocalyptic event with the main character attempting to survive the harsh conditions left afterwards. However there wasn’t enough in the way of details about the actual apocalyptic event and I didn’t understand how a chemical weapon could have a flash and kill most of the population while turning some into zombie-like beings and others remained immune. It also didn’t seem to have any effect on the flora and fauna, other than a brief mention in the book that animals were starving and looking for food.

What I didn’t like about this book were a lot of things. Most noticeably, the writing in this book felt hurried. To me, it came across as if it was a first draft instead of a published novel. There were far more grammatical errors in this book than I felt was acceptable, with words being left out of sentences, and this quickly became very annoying. I also felt the characters were not developed, the dialogue between characters was not realistic and not appropriate for their personalities, and there were no real twists and turns in the storyline and no surprises because it was way too predictable.

The writing itself was difficult to read because it seemed very juvenile. At first I thought maybe it was geared toward a much younger audience, perhaps very young teenagers, but with the main characters being a mid-teen boy and others in their twenties, plus the adult concepts involved in the story, it could only be written for older teenagers. If there was a reason for deliberately writing this book in that way, I seemed to have missed it. The writing style in this book surprised me because I have read After The Before by the same author which was well written and is in stark contrast to the style used in this book. In fact, if I had not known who the author was of both books, I would have said they were written by two different people.

Even though this is a story about the aftermath of an apocalyptic event and you need to allow some room for creativity for this type of genre, the story was largely unbelievable and unrealistic. It felt as though the author had not conducted any research into how things worked, or didn’t work, in a post-apocalyptic world and wasn’t aware of survival skills. For instance, when Lillian and James decided to travel to another place, some years after the apocalypse happened, they get a car from the local dealership which just happens to start after a few attempts, and they find plenty of fuel at gas stations along the way and fill up their jerry cans as well. And there wasn’t much in the way of explaining where all the food came from either. The story just had too many conveniences for me to overlook.

In regard to the characters in the book, I was unable to like or even connect with any of them in this story on any level, even when bad things happened to them. There just wasn’t any real depth or emotion coming through the writing. Even the conversations between characters seemed awkward and just not right.

This book didn’t hold my interest from early on and it was a real struggle to read it right through to the end. I would not be interested in continuing with any more books in this series but I would certainly read another book by this author considering her other book After The Before was well written and was an enjoyable read.

I wouldn’t recommend this book and those who love post apocalyptic stories would be sure to be the most disappointed by this book.

I really enjoyed this book. The only problem with it is I wish it is longer. Lillie was a strong female heroine. I decided that she is a complex character. I enjoyed watching her struggle through her decisions. What is crazy is I wanted to scream at her that she was making the wrong decision. While reading her thoughts I thought the decisions she made were the right ones. I loved her child Azami. She was such a sweet edition to this crazy apocalyptic world. I thought the author descriptions were great. I do want to know more about the Infected. I didn't get enough of them throughout the tale. I look forward to reading more from this author because her words have hooked me.

I grabbed a copy of Infected by Jessica Gomez from her newsletter. I was sucked in by the cover and, of course, an apocalypse. I love end of the world novels.

A bright light, a flash in the sky and billions are dead. We all know that there are more things to fear than the mutants. Sometimes our own kind is the most terrorizing of all. Man’s worse traits and best traits rise in times of catastrophe

There are lots of characters and they all have an important part to play. Of course, the main characters, Lillian and Azami shine the brightest. Some of the cutest dialogue happens when Azami is involved. When the book begins Lillian spend one night of magic with HIM and the result is Azami. For the longest time, it’s just the two of them.

Some things were predictable and some were a total surprise. I loved the tension, suspense and pacing that kept me on pins and needles. Sometimes Jessica Gomez’s words dragged me over the rough spots, and there were a lot of them. When they cried, I cried along with them. I felt their pain, the loss, their total despair their fear and their terror.

I am excited that I have Immune, Book II of The Flash series, on my ereader.

I wanted so badly to like this book. Truly. I feel it was very generous giving it three stars. Simplistic in nature, not enough details, and left you wanting more (but not in a good way). The story line was good in theory, but the execution was lacking. I wanted to dnf it 30% through but wanted to give it the chance to get better. It did not. Repetitive dialogue was also very noticeable and made it feel like reading the chapter before. I hate giving negative reviews but this book is definitely lacking.

If you like The Host and The 5th Wave, this is for you!

I managed to binge this book within a couple of days I and loved every second of it. I'm usually very fussy when it comes to dystopian zombie novels, but the author has managed to create a real page turner that pushes the traditional boundaries of the genre. The story follows the main character Lilie and her baby daughter Azami, in a post apocalyptic world where the vast majority of the population has been killed by a deadly event called the flash. Some people were killed off instantly, others were seemingly immune, and the less fortunate became infected by a mysterious virus. Those that became infected, were turned into horrifying, sprinting, grotesque, zombie monsters that are the stuff of nightmares. There's no shambling zombies in this novel! And so ensues a heart wrenching, adrenaline fueled story with familial love and complex characters. There's a couple of themes in the book, without giving too much away, that were particularly bold for me, and a lazy author could have skirted around these issues. Thankfully the author tackled this head-on and managed to convey the complexity of the issue thoughtfully. The internal struggle of the main character is captured perfectly, and as the reader, you're left feeling conflicted....and then there's the hot eye candy too. Whats not to like? Overall i'd highly recommend this book to anyone that loves dystopian YA fiction with a sprinkling of romance. i'll certainly be buying the second one in the series, and I can't wait to find out what happens next.

I didn’t just read this. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to rape you, but I did it to keep you safe. Really. It’s the same as, I didn’t mean to kill him, I just needed his wallet because my daughter is dying and I needed money. So many fucked up shit in this whole book.
The main C, Lily was a fucking Mary Sue. Oh, she nearly killed me, but don’t kick her out, she will die. What?
Also, what the hell? This chick doesn’t like Mason, “loves Ian” and then, when they tell her Mason likes her, she all of a sudden is interested but not really.
I quit by chapter 13, I couldn’t deal with the MC any more.

I loved the book although a couple of things became redundant as the story progressed. I would have liked for more character progression, some could have been fleshed out more. All in all the premise of this book is wonderful.

The premise sounded interesting enough but the writing is childish. I kept skimming but it got worse - I've read better Wattpad stories.

Okay this is the second time I’m writing this (for some reason I was kicked out of the app before I could hit finished)

This will have spoilers ****

This book was OK. It took me forever to finish reading it. I just couldn’t get into it for some reason.

We start off with our main character Lily, who is in foster care, so she is having no one around. She randomly meet a guy after the wolf ends they sleep together (okay I guess) then he finds her again when with a horrible group of people raps? Her. She gets pregnant all at the age of maybe 17 or 18.

Then we skip ahead TWO YEARS! Finds a teenager boy lives in a tree!? (Like what, I had a hard time picturing it, maybe like Narnia) get a small scare of infected then travel to a different place and find teenagers brother who happens to be the father of your child! Too many coincidences for me.

Then the rest of the book nothing really happened IMO.

Regarding a love story, part of this book through 50% in the book we’re supposed to fall in love with Ian . Then he dies and if my calculation is right, it’s been six months maybe a little bit more and he comes back but this time frame is the whole rest of the book and we are (maybe, possibly) falling for Mason the best friend that now the child is calling daddy! Like idk how I’m feeling.

I’m stopping this series for now, I may pick it up later, but for now I’m moving on.

Good Start

I loved the single mom character, Lillian. And loved that James connected to them as a family. They made runs for supplies on their own, to include Azami as well, trusting on James gift.

The book went left once they reach the caves where the main characters are now too helpless to savage goods. James his gift.

The book has a good start. Differently liked the idea of the survivors developing ‘super powers’. How ever it is poorly executed. Why did Lilian’s gift start after the getting in to the cave, while James gift dwindled and became effectively useless.

Lillian is initially described as strong willed, determined to survive and to protect those she loves fiercely. Yet once she gets to ‘safety’ and all the men she’s now . The damsel in distress.

James gift could have help Ian. The first half of the book is obsolete.

After getting the sh!t best out of her, Lillian continued to sleep in a room with no doors. And she’s the target for each attack. It’s simple minded to do these things.

We know the world exploded but we don’t know why. I guess this is why I don’t really read horror romance movies. When all hell breaks - do you really think people can afford for women sit on the sidelines.

I’m FREAKING CRAZY About This New Series!!

I FREAKING LOVED THIS BOOK!!!

A perfect example of romance in an Apocalyptic world! It shouldn’t take center stage, survival is definitely the priority, but adding in some romance that is sweet adds something to an otherwise dark, hopeless world.

I will say there are some scenes that may be triggering to some. Violence, death, bullying, and attempted rape are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. The violence is the hardest one, I felt myself wincing when the character was pummeled.

But the prequel was really good at explaining how the world went to hell. The way things happened were a really unique concept, and to think it was within their own government is just sick.

I HIGHLY recommend this to all those APOCALYPTIC, SURVAL stories, with a touch of romance!! I’d definitely read the short prequel first, which is only in ebook format, but it is very short and each short story shows a peak at how things went down in the beginning and it really makes book one that much better! Now on to book two, as soon as it arrives!!

Jessica Gomez has written an excellent book. This is the first book I have read of hers and it will not be the last. She has now become one of my favourite authors.

The story is about Lillie who is a survivor of the apocalypse after someone releases a chemical weapon killing most of the people of Earth. Those who survive are either infected and die or are immune.

It follows Lillie through her story to find a safe place to avoid the infected who are killing the immune. She meets Ryan and they have a night of passion but are separated as he is looking for his brother. She has a baby out of this union. Ryan had promised to return for her but he never turned up. They do meet again sometime later under different circumstances. Meanwhile she and her young daughter meet a young lad named James. They join forces to keep safe.

It is a story full of adventure, horror with some good times.

I received this book as a freebee and loved it. I highly recommend this book. It is the first book of a four-book series but can be read as a stand-alone book.

I have been in a zombie kind of rut lately. I’ve been trying to find a good zombie book and some just aren’t cutting it. This happened to pop up on my kindle and I clicked it and decided I’d give it a try later. Well, I just kept thinking about it while trying to read another book and just decided to go ahead and read it. I am so happy I did. This was not what I was expecting. The zombie apocalypse and the power aspect of it is kind cool. The character and world building is really good. It’s got my emotions all over the place with the MCs love interest and it’s killing me! The author made you like both you want her to be with Ian because of course he is Azami’s father. But Mason is so sweet. I just hate how in certain parts it makes it seem kind of fast how Lillie jumps back and forth in her feelings on the two. James is so amazing you loved him from the start. And cute little Azami. Can’t wait to see what happens next!

DNF - quit at 10%
This was really hard to get into. There’s only snippets of world building, so it’s hard to orient in the story. The constant dream sequences were a pain in the @ss and only disconnected me from the story. The character development by the point I quit was just shallow, not letting me get to know the female main character enough to even like her. It didn’t feel like a lot of thought went into developing the story, with just random things happening just because it sounded like a good idea to the author to just add it even if it didn’t work right. Picked this up for free on Amazon, so I can’t complain about the $, but only about wasting time. Definitely deleting this from my Kindle library.

At my age (60), life is way too short & my time is too important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.

It was okay. It's between 3-3.5.

I do see this series going some where. Some of the characters very likeable. I also liked how they got little gifts after the flash that can help each other out to keep their group safe. I like how they are in the cave and all that. They can have better defense for the opening like trying to make door out of some thing.

Need more detail about the flash even with it being biochemical. If it was big flash from space don't need any detail's over that. I didn't like how she turned a blind eye on the guy who raped her even if he was trying to save her from the bad Guy's. Kinda of puked in my mouth from that. Now she all in love with him!!!! Crazy!!!!
Hated gap's between year's felt rushed. I make big deal out of that. I like to know everything that's happening.

This took me weeks to finish. Typically I read 2 to 3 books a week, but this was not good. I truly disliked the main characters. Never have I read a book where the 20 something MMC rapes the underage FMC to 'save' her, and then she instantly forgives him cause it 'could have been worse'.
WTF.
This rape creates a love child, but the MMC doesn't find her like promised, he goes off to a utopia and gets a new psycho girlfriend. The FMC saves another child, who's age changes several times.
They all end up in the same place, the child FMC saves is (of course) the MMC's little brother. The whole plot is poorly written, facts change, grammar is poor, and the FMC simply never stands up for herself.
The book could have been really good, but instead it gave me the characters were sorta pathetic and the writing was awful.
Also, there is suddenly magic introduced, what was that about?

I couldn't put this book down it was page turning. When the Flash happened it changed the world as we know it causing most people to drop dead or become the Infected. When Lillie survives the blinding light and the months following only to be surrounded by a gang intent on harm, she is certain that her life is over. She has become a survivor, provider and protector. Never dreaming she would see the one man who took something away from her. Lillie and her daughter Azami stumble upon a young boy who is all alone. They befriend each other and decide to try to find this place he learned of before the Flash not sure if is exsists or not.

This is an amazing story where the world ends only to discover this family bent on surviving anything the end has to offer.

I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read the next in the series. This is the first book I've read by this author and boy am I glad I read it. I'll definitely be grabbing the other two books in the series ASAP.

Lillie and her daughter live in an apocalyptic world and are barely surviving. They come across a young orphan boy, James who lives inside a tree and decide to stay with him. He tells them of a self-sufficient cave system he was told about when he was younger. He has hope that his brother Ian has made it to the caves and after a while they all decide to try to find it. What follows is an interesting read about survival, love, loss and hope.

This was definitely a different book. I didn't dislike it but I am not sure how much I liked it either. I did start the second but kind of stalled part of the way through. I have a serious problem with the main romantic interest in the story. Even though the author tried to have the main character explain away why the romance was okay and not wrong, wrong, WRONG it never did settle well especially when there was a perfect other choice in partner that didn't make one want to puke. I am yeah...just eh...done with the series I believe. Maybe on a rainy day if I have nothing else to read (small chance) I will pick up where I left off in the second installment but I am not holding my breath on that one.

A interesting version of a "zombie outbreak" in a dystopian world story, with a insta-love romance and plenty of drama fueled obstacles. The characters are realistic variations of personalities. The descriptions are detailed and the situations are well defined. The story has enough dark aspects to keep it entertaining, while not fully qualifying it as horror. Although some of the scenes are truly horrific. The biggest problem with this story is the unfinished ending that doesn't quite reach the point of a cliffhanger. And you're left slightly wondering what's next, but not enough to buy another book.

A really good book that is not my normal genre. Generally like mystery and thriller but this will have me following this series. The ends with where I think the next one will start.

i admit that I had a hard time following the time sequence in the beginning of the copy of the book I had. It finally made more sense I as I went further into the book. I also was able to figure out the importance of eye color for people. (if I say more than you will not read the book to find out for yourself.)

I gave it 5 stars because not my normal genre but it kept me intrigued enough to keep reading and looking forward to the next one in this series.

I had this in my kindle ready for awhile and hadn't read it. I finally decided to read it and I don't know what made me not. It is great. After the great flash there are few people who didn't perish. Life as we knew it is over. Lillie is one of those survivors and is trying to make a life for herself when she gets caught be a gang of people who are not good. One of the group rapes and tells her he is saving her life because if he doesn't they will a get a chance at her. SHe has no choice. What comes from that night saves her life and she has a daughter. She will do anything to save her. After quite awhile they end up finding a little boy and join to make each other's life better. Finally they have to leave the place they were staying and go deep into the mountains. Who does she find but the man who saved her life by raping her. Will they be able to work out their problems.

First off, my gripes: there were a few grammar and spelling issues and the author did switch from past to present tense at odd moments, but those didn't detract from the overall impact of the story being told.

That being said, I totally enjoyed this take on the zombie genre -- kept me turning the pages . . . I liked the fact that this book didn't try to be more than it was, a group of survivors trying to keep their life as productive and "normal" as possible at the end of civilization as we know it.

Four stars due to the grammar and spelling issues -- but worth the read.
