A thinking person's robot series, Mobile Police Patlabor avoids the overblown military plots of other mecha comics and focuses instead on robots' occupational uses. Its cast of memorable, likable characters and its plausible technology have made it one of the most popular manga around.
An agent for a shady corporation hands over military grade Labors to “terrorists”, depicted in this volume as cartoonish hippies. In return for a sympathizing gift, the corpo agent simply asks for the data disk after use. Special Vehicle Section 2 struggles to apprehend these Military Labors running amok by the drunken power of the terrorist pilots. Outclassed by its superior armor and strength, tensions increase among SV2 staff. Captain Gota requests for a new staff member to whip the team into shape.
And I wish Viz had published the rest of these. QQ
Read the first half at AWA 2024 and finished it using a digital scan.
Was initially unsure of the introduction of Kumagami but I like her and mainly how she pushes the rest of the unit to grow. Really liking the increased emphasis on character development the slower pace of the manga allows. I like the art style too with the emphatic large panels for key moments.
The second and last volume (ever published) of Patlabor continues in the excellent slow paced, character driven style of the first volume and introduces the character of Takeo Kumagami, who was seen in the latter half of the TV series/2nd OAV. She's an interesting character and it would be nice to get to know her better. However, after volume 2 VIZ stopped publishing this manga, and it's a real shame. I can just wish that one day, it will be re-released in it's original size, right-to-left format, and entirety.
