The Sol Saga #1

Revolution: The Sol Saga, Book 1

Rate this book
War is good for business...and business is about to boom.

General Keith Brennan would rather face an army with his trusty rifle than attend another state dinner. When the president of the solar system is assassinated on Mars, Brennan is the obvious choice to investigate. If he comes up with the wrong answer, though, his career will be over.

However, duty is never so simple. When the investigation uncovers a trail of corruption and a conspiracy on a system-wide scale, Brennan’s career is the least of his worries.

With Earth and Mars on the brink of a shooting war and forces behind the scenes determined to push them over the edge, only Marine General Keith Brennan can stop the slaughter before it’s too late. Unless, of course, it already is....

Revolution is the first in a new gritty sci-fi saga with enemies at every turn. Grab your rifle, pick your side, and join the revolution now!

Revolution is nothing less than an epic future history of the next leg of humanity's journey, if we ever happen to move off his rock and get the fuck on with it. Debates on the settlement-viability of Mars aside, the Sol Saga series would seem to be just that - a tale of history repeating itself against greater and greater backdrops.

Set mostly on Earth and Mars, and specifically in a training academy and political arena on each planet respectively, with some detours for space dogfights that will probably turn out to be more of a thing in the next book, Revolution is action-packed and boasts some memorable and ... I won't call them sympathetic characters, but they have their moments. It also suffers a little from inevitable comparison to The Expanse, just without the ancient alien stuff and with a considerable amount of male gaze thrown in. Making male gaze occasionally come from a woman doesn't make it better, either. It's just a little unfortunate.

At first glance it seemed as though what we had going on was another of my favourite indie sci-fi tropes, the Well Over Six Foot Tall Protagonist, with the added bonus of him being genetically modified to have 0% body fat and being capable of processing oxygen and canapés into a small diamond once every six months. He couldn't actually do that but I pretended he could and it got me through the rough times. Anyway, as I was saying, at first glance it seemed a bit like that but then it turned out General Keith Brennan was a lot more complex than that and had far better "saga" potential, as we see by the end of this first book.

So, what happens in this one? Mars, on the brink of independence from sovereign Earth, is embroiled in an interplanetary fuckarow when the President of Earth is assassinated on Martian soil. General Keith Brennan and Mars Governor Helena Chu are left in the middle of a political mess that is veering sharply massacrewards from minute one. Also Colt is involved, along with Colt's giant fucking arsehole of a mother.

Colt's mummy issues and the cool gang she wants to be a part of and / or beat is a mildly compelling B plot that left me wondering where and when it was going to join up with the Mars Will Rise Again plot going on over in the A thread. I actually thought Spalding and Brennan were the same guy for a bit, but I do tend to have difficulty with that sort of thing sometimes and you know what? I think they maybe could have been combined into one character, except for the fact that were on different planets for a lot of the story. That's a very minor difficulty, and easy to fix. The story introduced a few too many characters, without much to distinguish them from one another (kind of like The Expanse!). It took a while to get into the flow of it - but once I did, it was great (kind of like The Expanse!).

Helena's failure to shoot Bruce in the penis, and then in the face, and then keep shooting, is something I consider a major flaw in the narrative, and another one that would have been very easy to fix. I looked at my progress meter and let's just say you have to be just extraordinarily patient until the 88% mark, and even then it's a qualified pay-off. And when I say "qualified", I mean "where's my fucking spree, Fox? I'm not seeing a spree, and before you say anything no that doesn't count as a spree."

Helena and Gwen do, however, have a brief Bechdel-Test-passing conversation with a Frozen reference in it, and I was looking for a better place to congratulate the author for that, but I didn't find one, so here it is. Pause for kudos.

The book had some minor but distracting editorial issues as well, but that's fairly standard and was not at all a deal-breaker as far as I'm concerned. Fox used compunction instead of compulsion at one point, and I'm also pretty sure he wrote piss at you like a feral cat instead of hiss at you like a feral cat but frankly I would call that an improvement on the idiom. The stuff about the terraforming and the overall appearance of Mars could have been talked about back when the glassed-over canyons were mentioned, not at the ~40% mark, but I am a known sucker for an info-dump and by no means a target reader here. Fox probably made the right call in scattering the minutiae around a bit.

That's it, let's go to the meters.

Sex-o-meter

There's not much actual sex in this one, just some ogling of taut bodies in crisp dress whites and some mildly distressing changing-room nudity. And ... was that "snuggle" as a synonym for "fuck" I just saw? Aw. On the heels of that, whatever is happening here with Spalding and Aldis and Colt and Colt's mum who is also Colt, all of that needs to stop. Reversal of the roles doesn't make this any less gross, but I see what Fox was doing. Interesting plot device, and certainly well written. Just - ick. The sex-o-meter gives this a balloon dachshund quarter-filled with congealed porridge out of a possible balloon Eiffel Tower fully-filled with bubble tea.

Gore-o-meter

There isn't the spree I found myself shaking the book and demanding by about the halfway point, but we get some murder and mayhem, and we get an oof-worthy massacre of innocents. They earn Revolution three flesh-gobbets out of a possible five.

WTF-o-meter

So like I said, this was a hard military sci-fi political thriller with no aliens, only human drama and hard military sci-fi political stuff. Not exactly my bag, but that's okay. This is a lot of people's bag. There's a world here, a universe, and a definite sense of something epic (nay, sagaesque) unfolding, but no WTF. I'm barely registering a completely normal mirror with zero pickles or Hitlers reflected in it out of a possible Scary Door here. And the WTF-o-meter might just be picking up residual WTF from my lunch.

My Final Verdict

Revolution ended on a cliffhanger and that's okay. I'll give this action-packed space thriller three stars on the Amazon / Goodreads scale, but if Maureen Colt doesn't get her face spree'd off in the next book I'm coming back.

So, Revolution is book one of The Sol Saga. Sounds ominous, right? So, yeah, this is book one in a longer series, heck, a Saga so a lot will happen but not much will be resolved. Going into it with that Caveat, well, Revolution totally delivers. James Fox has set the stage for what could potentially be an amazing science fiction epic. From the opening shot (which unfortunately blows a hole through the Earth’s President's head on what was supposed to be the first day of Martian Independence) Fox sets in motion a series of intertwining plot points and introduces us to a group of fascinating characters. Much of Revolution is stage setting, but it’s brilliant, detailed and accessible. In many ways it felt like a prequel to James SC Corey’s Expanse series. Unlike a lot of military scifi, this isn’t about military strategies, Fox leans into the characters and conspiracies, building a mosaic of intimate perspectives when blended together create an intriguing and fully fleshed out sci-fi adventure.

For audiobook fans, Revolution is brought to life by some of the best narrators in the business. From the opening sequence Dion Graham shines. He brings a sense of gravitas and authenticity to his characters often missing in science fiction. Emily Zoo Weller, Lauren Fortang, Tim Gerald Nelson, and Chris Cuilla round out this all-star cast and are at the top of their game. The Production quality is crisp, as one perspective flows smoothly into the next giving the book an almost cinematic quality. With its epic nature and all-star cast, Revolution just may be the start of something big.

Revolution is an addictive sci-fi/fantasy that takes place on Mars. It involves murder, conspiracy, many twists and turns, and incredible world-building and character development. Since I finished it, I’ve been obsessed with Mars and find myself thinking about the story a lot. I was so intrigued by the details of how people were able to survive on the planet, what they built, how they lived. I’m looking forward to the day I get to read the 2nd book!

Revolution is The First book in The Sol Saga Series by James Fox which takes us on a gripping and thrilling journey.

It's a big day for Mars, they have achieved their goal finally after working hard for 200 years, The Martian Independence. Many important people are present in the ceremony, but the most important person is the President of United Nations Interplanetary Council, Patrick Motwani, who is shot dead in between of his speech during the ceremony.

Who killed Him? Was he killed by any of his personal enemies or is it a conspiracy to push Earth and Mars on the Edge of a war? To find the answers to these questions the best person is General Keith Brennan,a no nonsense officer of Protectorate Force.

As the investigation unfolds we see corruptions and conspiracies on a wide scale. If he comes up with the wrong answer, his career will be over. But with such situations in hand for Brennan his career is the least of his worries.

The story is a fast paced novel that will keep you turning the page. It took me two chapters to get into the story but once I got involved I couldn't keep the book down and now I am eagerly waiting for the second part.

The book is of Science fiction Genre with a blend of thrill, suspense and action. So, if you are a lover of any of the above genre just Grab this book.

Fox does an excellent job in this novel creating a futur-verse in which we have terraformed and colonized Mars. The plot moves quickly, allowing the reader to dive right into the story even though the author is still setting the scene. This is a great approach because while you’re still learning to love the characters and the setting, you’re falling in love with the pace of this book.
I highly recommend reading the actual book rather than listening to the 18 hour long audiobook. The pace of the audiobook was just a bit too slow for me and the narrator pauses and emphasizes things at strange times. 18 hours for a single book is an awfully long time!

Riveting from beginning to end!

The multifaceted descriptions created vivid images in my mind and caused me to connect with the characters and feel their emotions. I became entwined in the plot from the very beginning. I have already bought Book 2! I recommend this book not only to Science Fiction fans, but to anyone who likes action; a great storyline, and compelling writing.

Received a a review copy (2021); also received as an audio review copy from Story Origin, this is an honest review. Narrated by Dion Graham, Emily Woo Zeller, Tim Gerard Reynolds, Lauren Fortgang and Chris Ciulla, delivers an interwoven performance that elevates this complex story full morally personalities and agendas. It was supposed to be a day of celebration... Mars earning its own freedom, an assassination changes everything and throwing the structure of power into chaos. General Keith Brennan is out at crossroads of keeping things from exploding... nothing will be the same ever again. Haunting and action packed... worthy of your time. Recommended.

Peak Drama, Riveting Characters

Earth and Mars will go to war in the future; it’s been predicted in science fiction for decades. Revolution is an incredible downward spiral into a well-orchestrated conspiracy shown from multiple perspectives: military, political, civilian, and investigator—all from the unique perspectives of characters that feel real.

Solid world-building. Engaging and believable characters. Shocking moments. Revolution is a must-read for fans of science fiction.

Waaat!? Can't wait for the next book now!

What I really liked is that this book engaged me enough that I had a hard time putting it down. It kept me always wanting to keep reading the next chapter to find out what was happening in the other characters' arc. The author followed multiple characters, and while it was intimidating to follow at first, it seamlessly blended eventually and I was able to pick back up each storyline with no trouble.

Without giving too much away - the main storyline follows a Martian (Mars, not green alien Martian) General, Brennan, who we learn is first tasked with protecting the Governor of Mars, Helena Chu. He kinda has a thing for her, but doesn't really know it because he's bad with his feelings. The Martian government is on the verge of independence, but some things happen and then some new characters enter. We follow some well-known and soon-to-be-known fleet trainees/academy characters for a bit. Then there's this scummy guy Ed who you begin to have questions about and, last that I'll mention, a girl named Frankie who works for the gov't on the Moon base and is really good at programming/hacking. All of their stories will begin to intersect in some way or another, but really by the time the stage is set, it's time for the next book. Well done.

My only real critique is that some of the diction created speedbumps for me. The author does a great job detailing each setting, but seems to struggle with internal dialogues and conveying emotions and it comes out as though it is suddenly written by a jarhead or 20 yr-old frat boy; which didn't align with some of the characters' traits. To be honest, there's really only one military figure we follow closely and he was only one that the argument could be made that it matched.

Great storyline
Great character development
Proper Sci-Fi w/o the unnecessary alien fanfare
Definitely want to read the rest of the saga

💌What if Sci-fi and Fantasy together making a perfect combination?
Revolution by James Fox, is a part one of "The Sol Saga" series where author really presented his creativity by combining the sci-fi and fantasy elements.

💌If I talk about the title and cover of the book, both are really good and capable to attract the readers. Well, its not a short read, but honestly worth the time. I finished this book in 7 days, reason being, i really didn't wanted to finish this book soon as i was enjoying it a lot, i was lost in this imaginative world and was not ready to come out of it.

💌The plot of the book is really unique, there are 32 titles along with the timeline which gives us an idea about the next part. The protagonist of the story is General Keith Brennan and he is like a star of the whole story, great character. Really don't want to disclose the storyline as it will end the suspense, I really would like to invite you all to read this book and enjoy your time.

💌Overall, Its a fantastic book with great twists and turns, wonderful work done by author James. The good thing is that the story is unpredictable, you really can't predict what will happen next and that kept me interested till the end. A gritty sci-fi saga with enemies at every turn. Grab your rifle, pick your side, and join
the revolution now!

Action, Sci-fi and fantasy!
This book has every ingredient to sweep you off your feet. The storyline behind this book is so amusing I couldn't stop myself from getting my hands on this masterpiece!

General Keith Brennan would rather face an army with his trusty rifle than attend another state dinner. When the President of the solar system is assassinated on Mars, Brennan is the obvious choice to investigate. If he comes up with the wrong answer, though, his career will be over. In the beginning, it was quite normal but after reading 20-30 pages, it actually became my favourite sci-fi book.

James' depth of imagination and world building is impressive, as this 500-pager is filled not only with legend, but also with satisfying twists that turn legend on its head. It’s a story that reads beautifully and will linger with you.
I was sucked in quickly and stayed up late reading the last quarter of the book it was so full of tension–I just had to know what was going to happen. But while the pace is steady, it takes time for this story to unfold.

I can’t tell you more because then it would spoil the story for you, i want you all to discover this story by yourself.
I’m looking forward to book 2.

Tricky to review

I used to enjoy these space operas when I was young. Returning to the form, now, I found the format too long. Length is fine, if you get good character development, but here there was character motivation, which good, but a lack of character building. So all the character were built on trope, but with some attention to detail. Which made it incredibly difficult to feel for the characters and engage with whatever motivation they had. By this I do not mean you liked or disliked any character, it was just hard to feel anything.

Why I describe this as tricky to review is that despite my comments, this was still an enjoyable read, with enough action to keep your attention, though I was starting to flag towards the end. It is not a book that is going deep and meaningful but it is more than just high concept. I assume book two in the series matures towards some of the great epic sci-fi such as Dune and Foundation. Both of those series I still think are unfilmable despite all modern attempt, this series would make a half decent Netflix show.

While I have reservations I will still give the second book a go.

🌸Revolution is the first book in the book series "The Sol Saga". Well I am not a fan of sci-fi books but some of them just blew my mind and this is one such book, I enjoyed this book so much.

🌸In the beginning, I felt like, this book will take a lot of time but as the story progressed, I found myself lost in this fantastic world created by James. It took me a couple of chapters to really get into the story, but once I did i was unable to put down. There is a perfect mix of Sci-fi and Fantasy, both of them can never go wrong together. There is a very good flow maintained by the author in this book and that's what made it more interesting. I really liked the twists involved as they just come up at the right time.

🌸Its not easy to write a story where everything seems just perfect, but this is one such book, from the cover to the storyline, everything is impressive. I would like to give extra stars for world building and characters development shown throughout the story.

🌸I read very few sci-fi books but i am glad o
I chosen this novel as its really worth the time.

Audiobook: This was my first experience with James Fox's work, and it was very absorbing. Once the audiobook started, I was so captivated by the story, that I listened to it within two days. The characters were sophisticated and complex. The political machinations were convoluted and tricky. This story did end on a cliffhanger, and I can't wait for the next book. This was my first experience with several narrators, and it made the experience very entertaining. All the narrators, Dion Graham, Emily Woo Zeller, Tim Gerard Reynolds, Lauren Fortgang, and Chris Ciulla were great, and their combined performances enhanced the story's entertainment. I was given a free copy of the audiobook and I have voluntarily posted this review.

Excellent. Steady pace that made sense. Strong characters that I am sure will make sense more in the second book, as we don't quite see the threads fully wind together in this book. Thats' not to say they don't make sense - they are flowing towards each other, and I am certain however that they will connect up with unforeseen twists before the end. The references back to human history and its behaviour are very accurate. Looking forward to book 2.
