Primal Possession: A Dark Omegaverse Romance: The Alphas of Sandor Series, Book 1

Rate this book
I never really thought I’d be captured...

Despite being born an Omega, I refused to spend my life in a facility, waiting for a suitable Alpha to claim me as his. Instead, with the help of my family, I broke the law, hiding among the Betas, trying to live a normal life. I enjoyed five years of freedom...

...then they caught me.

Now I’ve been chosen by Arius, the second most powerful Alpha in Sandor. The moment my scent reached him, overcome by the rut, he had to take me. As his mate, I can have anything my heart desires - anything he has the power to give.

The only thing I don’t have is a choice.

USA Today bestselling author Tabitha Black has been writing erotic spanking fiction for over a decade, mostly in the age-play and historical genres. More recently, she's discovered the joys of writing more contemporary, edgier books with a greater emphasis on BDSM – one of which, Sharing Silver, has been nominated for a Golden Flogger award and won the Spanking Romance Reviews award for best ménage 2015.

Having lived in four countries on three different continents, and been an active participant in her local kinky communities, she likes to "write to discover what she knows". Her own personal kinks include anything and everything to do with spanking, fireplay, edge play, scarification, age-play, and too many more to count. Some girls like wood, some adore leather, but Tabitha is partial to big, shiny, ornate knives… nothing else makes her quite as weak at the knees.

She lives in Europe with her Daddy/Sir, and a lilac cat who likes to sneeze in her face. She has a weakness for great cappuccino; strong, dominant, kind but brutally sadistic men (and counts herself amazingly lucky to have found one in real life); brilliant books, and tattoos.

Please sir, may I have some more?

I'm half omegaverse whore, half omegaverse snob. That is to say I'll metaphorically drop my knickers if the book has omegaverse in the blurb but I'll quickly pull them back up and walk away if the writing isn't up to par. Happily Primal Possession is a super hot, darkness tinged, well written story. It has an excellent plot, some very good world building and two finely crafted main characters.

The setting of the story held all the 'key' features I have come to expect from an omegaverse book whilst also having a sense of individuality. There were lots of hints of life outside the palace walls that have me intrigued and wondering where the next Alphas of Sandor book will take us. This was further enhanced by the quality of secondary characters, most of whom added substance to the story rather than just merely being present.

I loved how Ms Black took me from disliking the hero, Arius, at the start of the book to ultimately being a little in love with him by the end. He was a very imperfect hero, unafraid to admit when he had made mistakes, yet still very dominant and alpha throughout. We really got to know the man that at first seemed a monster, kudos to some amazing writing by the author to maintain his core personality whilst allowing him to mature and grow.

Saskia was a wonderful heroine, who also developed through the story. She picked her battles wisely and thankfully wasn't prone to impulsive behaviour - I can't abide a TSTL character. There were several moments where both characters had 'come to Jesus' moments, I didn't agree with Saskia at first, on one of them, but by the end she had totally convinced me of her decision!

It just remains to say that this is omegaverse, if you hadn't noticed, and that means lots of very hot and heavy sexual encounters with copious amounts of slick and several alpha knots. Phewy I either had several menopausal hot flushes or this book was seriously steamy, yet the scenes were neither gratuitous nor excessive.

In summary I feel this is a perfect book for dipping your toes into if you're new to the genre, it's also a great read for those well entrenched in the alpha/beta/omega dynamic. I also think those who love darker reads, sci-fi or even contemporary and want to find something new would all very much enjoy this.

A bit tame and vanilla but a quick, one time read. They got right to it and skipped the oh so fun, cat and mouse game. Innocent omega is forced to be the queen and mother of future crown heirs. Doesn't have the feel of other omega books.

Spoilers ahead

I'm desperate for a good book at this point 😭
Typical plot with Alphas ruling, Betas dissatisfied and Omegas rare. The Omegas are taken from their families at 18 and placed in a facility, the h hid from that fate for 5 years until she was discovered and eventually claimed by the H
Then we go through the entire process of heat and slick and bossy controlling Alpha vs. stubborn, resistant Omega. When Will I get a smart Omega who can make her situation work for her??
He's second in line to the throne and his mad uncle tried to rape her, to me the H was weak AF he didn't do anything to the uncle then but the thing is this mad man had their people suffering for years! And he's there twiddling his thumbs waiting on his turn to rule.... Alpha?? Where???
Anyway when the king tried again he FINALLY found his balls and killed him in "self defense" . Claiming ceremony soon follows and shocker of all shockers- they confess their love.... Again I ask where???? When??? An most importantly howww?,
I'm done, hoping a good book comes my way soon because I am FRUSTRATED 😞

It's the law. At age eighteen ALL Omegas will surrender their person to the Facility to live until such time as they are claimed by an Alpha. Failure to comply will result in death to those who are found to harbor any Omega, no matter the reason.

Twenty-three year old Saskia's luck has run out. Defying the law and living with her family past her eighteenth birthday, she has kept hidden until a mistake exposes her to the Trackers, a specialized group who round up escaped or rogue Omegas, returning them to the Facility.

Lady luck really isn't on her side as it's the scheduled monthly 'market night' when single Alphas are allowed into the Facility to search for their Omega breeder, and catches the attention of Arius, heir to the Sandor crown.

Shit

New series that takes place in the contemporary Omegaverse world. Just a reminder: Omegaverse is not a paranormal world building environment. Characters do take on the behavior aspects of Alpha, Beta, Omega but do not shift, change, or basically have any difference with humans in general with the exception of pheromones and knotting.

I grabbed this book as it was advertised as a dark Omegaverse m-f erotic romance story. Read the sample 10% and was hooked. Adding that dub-con does play a role in this story so do keep that in mind.

Alpha Arius & Omega Saskia. It's an insta-love sort of thing as their individual pheromones trigger off each other. Neither really has control as Saskia's heat cycle is triggered requiring attention. hehehehe. Readers get their fill of physical mating galore.

Secondary characters. Natalia, Tavos, Evander, Cerum, Deimos, and others add to the overall world building and character interactions. I'm sure Evander will be featured next so he's one of the gate. It will be interesting to see who he's matched with.

My thoughts. In general, when a story is advertised as 'dark' I expect dark consistently. IMHO this story starts out dark and then takes on a Harlequin romance quality. I had thoughts that this was more a fantasy fairy tale format romance but have to concede that the beginning portion is dark and fans of that sort of romance format would have issues if I had. Just know that the central to later portions of the story have minimal 'push your comfort zone' content.

An enjoyable read though I felt it lacked a clear overall identity. A mix of dark and fairy tale fantasy.

2 Smutty Stars

I don’t really have high expectations for smutty books. They have one job right? I picked this up because I like the whole concept of the Omega world. I think I just don’t jive well with the author’s writing style.

I feel like the book is too descriptive for my taste. I was just clicking on pages and pages of descriptive writing. I get it, it’s easier to just write paragraphs of what’s happening in story format, then actually writing out a scene. But it’s not my cuppa.

I did like when I read dialogue but I felt like the book had a lot of slow moving parts. There’s a lot of filler pages. I liked that the book was somewhat full length, it wasn’t a novella, but not a full length book. I think had the author edited it down to a novella, the book would have been better for me.

There should have been more kink, but that is a personal taste.

Overall, it was an okay read. I’m not ruling out this author yet because at the end of the day I wanted a smutty read and I got smut.

I was pretty excited for this one from the blurb, alas it didn't hit me like I expected. The alphas were too sissy to be alphas, the betas too bold for betas and omegas non existent. If you create a society where alphas dominate betas, it should be shown as such. Instead you had a beta family arguing with the alpha KING. What's more the villain is also a beta, who for some reason lost all sense to go against an alpha. Nothing gritty or grasping about the story, as is expected of an omegaverse. Found myself flipping pages.

Spoiler hereon: The 'traitor' bit was so lame. His reason for being a traitor was the stupidest. The H seemed to be romancing all the guys in the novel. (Not like real love interest, but the amount of love he showed to all was just puke worthy) C'mon, where are your balls, talk like a guy.
The weirdest was how the h who was initially portrayed to be defiant and rebellious, so much so that she was fighting her estrous, just accepted her fate. She became okay with everything and they didnt even show how that progressed. Just summed it up in a paragraph how she's adjusted. All in all Id say it was okayish for a first attempt at omegaverse.
To the author: Be true to omegaverse. Your audience will not dislike it, if your alphas are a lil ruthless or if your omegas succumb to estrous. That's what makes it omegaverse.

Primal Possession is book 1 in the Alphas of Sandor and unfortunately I didn't like it as much as I hoped I would. First, I found Saskia very annoying. I understood her desire to be free but she is an Omega who has been breaking the law. Second, Arius who is heir to the throne I found way to calm. I would have preferred more mindlessness from his rut and her heat. I was a little disappointed that that part of the mating seemed lacking. I may continue this series to see if it gets better for me.

Good.

This book is described as a “dark omegaverse romance” but it wasn’t dark at all. There were 2 attempted rapes but it wasn’t graphic and there was no violence. I’ve read a lot of books in this genre and a lot of them are really dark with many explicit rape scenes and acts of violence. This book wasn’t like that, which was a nice change. That being said, it was good but nothing to write home about. I will say that there is potential here so maybe the next book will be better. I feel like this could have been a lot better if there was more world building and more of a story line. I also would have preferred more relationship building between h and H.

This is the first book in the Alphas of Sandor series and features Arius and Saskia. This is an Omegaverse and while it says dark, on my personal scale of darkness I wouldn't classify it as dark. Saskia is an Omega pretending to be a Beta so that she can live a normal life doing what she wants to do when she wants to do it. When she finally gets caught and taken to the facility where they hold Omegas until they're claimed she runs into Arius.

Arius is next in line to the throne and pretty much the most powerful Alpha around. He has been searching for his mate so that he can start his bloodline and hold on to the throne and his future. When visiting the facility, he scents Saskia and both of them recognize each other for what they are to each other. Arius is excited and happy but Saskia, realizing that this is the end of her freedom is dismayed that this is all happening. In this world as an Omega, Saskia doesn't have choice over much and Arius is her new ruler.

As the two of them navigate their new reality together, Arius discovers there is more to Saskia than just an incubator and Saskia starts to trust the Alpha that may be able to see her for more than society dictates. Are Arius and Saskia doomed to live always wanting something more or can they build something lasting and loving?

This was a steamy steamy ride and I liked it well enough. I didn't really like Arius at the beginning because I thought he was an ass and I didn't care for all of Saskia's choices and thoughts but for the most part this was an enjoyable Omegaverse read.

Alphas in sharp suits, Omegas in hiding, mad 'kings' made this read rather like a mixed up fairy tale rather than the 'dark' read that was promised. The H was Alpha, kind to the h, she was sweet but unprepared as she has lived a hidden life. She coerced her family to hide her. This put all their lives at risk but it was understandable. It was OK just not 'dark' as the Alpha seemed a little too human or perhaps I mean humane.

Quick reread to clean up the review. The blurb sets it up, I’ve seen this scenario several times… Omega h is hiding as a Beta until she’s caught then claimed by an Alpha. This is followed by slick, knotting, and BBS all while she resents her mate. My issue is that I couldn’t stand Saskia, who IMO was selfish AF. SPOILERS….

Saskia decides she’s not going to the center because she wants more in life than being a mindless breeder. All good, but her family will be executed if she’s caught… and what does she do??? Go out during the day in Beta clothes because she’s sick of being inside. 🙄 Then after her secret is out and she asked Arius to protect her family (all while being a bitch) she acts like it's the biggest ask in the world to get her arm tattooed... you know, so the officials don’t figure out that she was never in the facility and execute your family. 🙄 Then, she asked for him to let her family visit and instead of begging for their lives or at least being respectful… her stupid father is a total aggressive asshole. (which goes against the hierarchy of the book)

The rest is pretty much loads of sex. Arius pampering and protecting Saskia while she acts hateful. I totally get her being pissed at the situation, but not who she directs her hostility at… the person keeping her and her family safe.

Bottom Line- I’m not a fan of the prickly h, and Saskia pretty much ruined the book for me. Usually the difficult h’s thaw, but she keeps it up for most of the book. The next h is very similar except she acts childish instead of hateful.

I'm fairly new to the Omegaverse world and because I love Tabitha Black's books, I jumped right on this one. Wow!! This was a bit different from the other stories I've read in this genre and I found myself totally engrossed in it. Saskia has been able to keep herself hidden among the Betas but that comes to an end when she is discovered and captured. As an Omega, the Alphas will have their pick of mates from them. Arius is the second most powerful Alpha in the city and when he sees Saskia, he knows she is the one for him. The struggle between them is great as she doesn't want a mate. She's a very strong willed woman and doesn't back down. But there is a mad king in the mix and they have to be careful. Will Arius be able to save Saskia from his mad uncle and take control over the city? I was so amazed at the world building in this story. It's fantastic and I will be eagerly waiting for the next book.

I read this book almost 2 yrs ago, but for some reason, either I never reviewed it, or I did and it got lost, because I had difficulties doing this review as well. (Submitted from my kindle by accident before I'd completed last paragraph so figured I'd just go to Goodreads and complete in edit mode....except after 24 hrs, it still doesn't show up.)

I've read, and reviewed, several other books in the Omegaverse world, by different authors and not all "Alphas of Sandor" as is this book, Primal Possession. But all have a similar theme... Three types of citizens, Alphas (ruling class), Betas (the working/servant class) and Omegas (breeding class & mates for the Alphas), though the rules may differ.

Primal Possession: Alphas of Sandor is, so far, my favorite book in the Omegaverse world. Why? For several reasons.

First, one man/one woman. Not that I'm opposed to reverse harem stories, but the ones in the Omegaverse world tend to treat the omega females as nothing more than helpless pets and breeding vessels. Which brings me to the second point....The H in this story (heir to the throne) while still an alpha, treats the h with respect and caring. He appreciates her intelligence and understands her fears. Which brings me to the third point.....a strong and intelligent h who is brave enough to defy tradition for her freedom and stand up for herself.

In this Omegaverse world, young girls are educated and free until the age of 12. At 12 yrs, the law requires, they be "tested" and, if Omega, no further education is allowed (you don't need to be educated to have babies) though they can remain with their family. However, the law, at the age of 18 they most report to the "Facility" to be tattooed and where they will remain until chosen by an Alpha as mate. Each month they are paraded before single Alphas who scent/smell them to find their mate. Our h convinced her parents to continue her education at home (against the law) after it was determined she was Omega; and after her 18th birthday, she failed to present herself to the facility. She wanted more than just being a brood mare. She remained in hiding for 5 years.

This story opens as an ill advised trip to town gets the h captured on a day the Omegas are to be presented. Her captors believe she escaped from the "Facility" so she is included with the other Omegas being presented and is chosen as mate by the heir to the throne (the H). Her fears, not just for herself but her family, are real; for if it is discovered that she did not escape (she has no tatoo) but had been in hiding all these years, the penalty is death to her and those who hid her.

What ensues is a slow, believable journey as the h begins to realize that the H is not the monster everyone believes him to be and that he is nothing like his uncle, the "mad" king. The road is fraught with danger as they deal with concealing that fact she'd been in hiding for 5 years; betrayals and the mad king who attempts to attack and claim her for his own.

Her intelligence, bravery, innocence and kindheartedness; His strength, command, compassion, understanding, tenderness and caring soon brings love and the journey takes her from the fear and certainty she's always had that being claimed by an Alpha means the loss of self and her freedom, to the realization that she has found her freedom with him and that her life will have more purpose than just being a breeding vessel.

He🐺 Holds All The Power

Saskia💃💋 is an Omega in a Beta 🌎world, until she is captured by the Trappers, a squad of beta men that are enforcers of the laws and they catch wayward Omegas💃💋, too.
Sandorian🌍 people's are one of three classes. The Alphas🐺, mostly huge males who have every advantage available and are the ruling class. Then betas, who are the working class, and ruled by the Alphas🐺. The third class is the Omegas💃💋, mostly all women, who are the breeders to the Alphas🐺 and who will only birth Alphas. They are prized above all others.

The fact that Saskia💃💋 was an Omega able to hide out for so long is very unusual because she skipped out and her parents helped her hide. At twenty-three, she has been on the run for five years! Most Omegas💃💋 are Taken to live in a special housing unit, called the Facility when they are eighteen. They are branded and live there until chosen by an Alpha🐺 for mating.

Arius🐺🍆⛲👋 is the Alpha heir to the kingdom. He will inherit Sandor🌍 from his uncle Deimos👺, a sociopath with no offspring. The time is coming when there will be a confrontation between the two Alphas that will probably end in Deimos's👺 death.

Arius🐺 realizes Saskia💃💋 is the true mate he has been searching for for years. Their pheromones are attracting them to each other!

I love this book! I have read quite a few Alpha Omega books by various authors, and loved all of them! The XXX scenes are graphic and raw.

I really liked Tabitha Black's take on the Omegaverse. Even though there are some things that are familiar across all the Omegaverse books, each author puts their own spin on the genre.

Saskia tried to escape her destiny, but it got her anyway. She got picked up and hauled away in front of a bunch of Alphas, where Arius smelled her and decided that she was heaven. Or at least his fated mate.

I love the connection between Saskia and Arius. It develops quickly, but it's still very deep and very strong. I thought that Arius was a pretty good guy, who was occasionally blinded by certain things, but he still tried to do what was right and what was best. I think because of that, he was surprised when the rest of the world didn't react the way that he thought that it should.

Saskia is brave, strong, and sweet. I think that all of that ties together to make her an incredible human being who is going to do great things.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how the rest of the series goes. I'd love to see Evander's story soon.

I liked Ms. Black's telling of the Omegaverse world. It wasn't all mean rutting males overpowering the female of their choice. Yes the Alpha goes into Rut, the Omega goes into heat, but it isn't all rough sex all the time. Don't get me wrong, there is sex and often enough to satisfy this erotic romance reader. Saskia was an Omega in hiding for 5 years but gets caught and discovered to be Arius's mate. Arius is second in line to the throne which is occupied by a Mad King, his uncle. There are secondary characters that even out the story, good guys and not such good guys, but the main focus is the Alpha and Omega pairing between Saskia and Arius. Arius is a very sweet Alpha once he gets his rut satisfied and Saskia is a smart, beautiful Omega that has a hard time accepting her lot in life. In the end, I was very happy with this first of what I hope are many more stories in the Alphas of Sandor Omegaverse. Good Start Tabitha Black!

Well, that was a boring affair.

This was just nothing I haven’t read before, in one way or another.
It was all nice, the characters, the plot, the world building. But it looked only to be the bare minimum and nothing outstanding or creative.
No unique twists, no creative bed acrobatics, no evil master mind. Everything was superficial, followed by simple solutions.
It all trickled along.
The characters fell flat, the author didn’t dig deep enough, or delivered any real conflicts. No real confrontation, the most conflicts were solved inside their own heads. With not much interaction between the two protagonists. Everything was resolved with a sudden change of heart, initiated by a small incident.
It was boring.

A good Omegaverse read. It was more light gray than dark. The author did a good job of transitioning the heroine from independent to appreciative and caring of the hero and using that to create some Independence and identity for herself in the future. Her family was very lovely. I guess the dark gray incidences are attempted AS by someone who was not the hero. And I guess maybe some of the things that happened in the communities around them.
If you're looking for a nice quick gray Omega verse then this is for you.

Introduction to a new world (at least for me),

Where Alphas rule, betas serve and omegas submit.

I like the trope, that isn’t exactly paranormal or alien romance. So ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars for originality!
The story is pretty short and that doesn’t allow for too much depth. That’s a pity IMO, because that’s what I want and like in books.

Did I enjoy this book? I mean...the narrator didn't make it any worse. So, that's a plus.

Why?

It's a pretty standard non-rh-omegaverse story with a fated mates feel. Super grumpy Alpha prince comes across an omega who's been trying to disguise herself as a beta. Obviously she smells AMAZING even though she's covered in filth - I like it. Makes me not feel bad kissing my husband with morning breath. Oh, and don't forget the obligatory virgin trope. There's a crazy king, an omega 'facility' (very handmaids tale), a claiming ceremony, and...uhh...I think that's it.

Why not 5 stars?

The FMC is by far one of the most annoying heroines to hit the romance pages. Like, I get it, you don't want to be a breeding machine BUT how effing oblivious, selfish, reckless, bratty, etc does a person need to be to accomplish this? Apparently very...

I'm not knocking points for this but saying this has consent issues is an understatement BUT it's addressed and labeled as a dark romance; this behavior is 'appropriate' for the story.

What a sweet little story. I love the omegaverse world. The characters were straightforward but likable. The bedroom scenes were hot.

It was definitely a good intro into this world and the secondary characters were also interesting. I liked them enough that I hoped that Evander would also find his mate (I see his story is in book 2).

Nice way to spend a day.

Good start to new series

There were some dark places in this book. I don’t have a lot of triggers so I read through them. But most of all it was the love story. I don’t mind angst on my way to a happy ending. That is this book. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥/5

Awesome Start for a New Series

A beautiful love story that capture your heart and leaves you wanting more. It has little BDSM, a crazy king, love, and steamy hot scenes that sizzles with awesome characters? A must buy and so ready to read the next book in the series.

A SOLID 3.5 STARS!

THIS WAS A LESS INTENSE VERSION OF OMEGAVERSE ROMANCE THAT I'VE EVER READ. EVEN SO, I FELT THAT THE CHARACTERS LACKED DEPTH IN THEIR RELATIONSHIP.

ARIUS at 35 years has waited a long time to find his mate, and when he finally does, he discovered that she had been in hiding for years. Omegas are ruled by the law to be sent to the Facility at 18 years old - a mandatory rule that if broken would mean death for the conspirators. Arius breaks the law to keep her safe and very much his, although he's pissed about it. Put in the fact that he had to contend with his rapist of an uncle, who happened to be the current King, Arius had plenty on his plate. The story was quite simple. Alpha meets Omega, let the fireworks of mating begin and get rif of the antagonist...who was also the same King. Arius's character could have been better exploited, he had potential.

SASKIA....how she ever ended up far away from home enough to be caught? We have no absolute idea. Zilch! So, she was captured and sent back to the Facility (they assumed she ranaway) but all Omegas of the Facility have tattoos to recognise them by and she clearly has none. Upon reaching the Facility, she was claimed immediately by Arius and she was forced to become his mate, the start of most Omegaverse stories. While Saskia was implied as strongwilled and intelligent, I don't see any of the traits at all because she often goes back to becoming a submissive Omega.

OVERALL this wasn't the best I've read, not even close but still it was a guilty pleasure read. The story itself could have been further developed, and so did the characters' background & their chemistry and bond. The rest was sort of vague.
