i’m torn between 4 and 5 stars for this because i’m not being dramatic when i say this book has changed my life and all of the practical applications will stick with me forever ♾️
however it was a little too repetitive for my liking. i can understand how it would be beneficial to reiterate things to drive home the point, but i had to skim through some parts i felt the author covered too many times.
but omg yes i recommend anyone and everyone read this book. it’s so eye opening.

AN EXCELLENT BOOK. Unless you're a complete hard-ass who doesn't care about anyone, you should to read this book. It outlines, very clearly, what codependency is, why it develops (as a coping mechanism to not having your needs met in childhood) and how to break the patterns of codependent behaviour. The emotional freedom to be found on the other side of codependency is profound. I was also interested to notice this author has another book on trauma recovery which makes sense, given the relationship between trauma and codependency. I look forward to reading that one, too.

Time to Break Free 💔

Breaking free from codependency made me examine myself as someone who has been in very toxic relationships and dealt with toxic family members. I've been guilty of giving up my power in exchange for peace. I always labeled it as something else.

This passage deeply resonated with me (p. 116):

"Other signs that you may be dealing with compassion fatigue include pronounced anxiety, apathy, difficulty in concentrating on tasks, headaches, stomachaches neglecting self care, lower immunity, impatience, reduction in pleasurable activities or hobbies, and withdrawal from other people."

This book not only helped me see my patterns of co-dependence, it helped me see how I was creating negative environments for those I thought I was 'helping,' never truly giving them what they needed. It helped remind me that what I was looking for was freedom, and gave me hope for my future that I could transform into my greatest potential.
