Author Dave Lund is from central Texas and is a former Texas “motor-cop,” having previously worked for nearly a decade in full time law enforcement as a Texas Peace Officer. Prior to being a Peace Officer, Dave was a full time skydiving instructor and actively competed in Canopy Piloting (aka swooping). Retired from active law enforcement, Dave now focuses on writing as well as working as a professional photographer.

The characters in the Winchester Undead series are a complete work of fiction, although some of them are personality composites of people whom Dave knows in the real world, but no characters are based solely on a single individual. They are a complete work of fiction and do not represent any actual people, living or dead. Yes, that includes Bexar! Many of the themes, objects, weapons, and tactics used in the Winchester Undead series are based on the author’s experience in prepping, law enforcement, and training.

Dave is no longer an active skydiver. His current hobbies include camping with his family, Overlanding with the purpose built Ford based Family Adventure Van, and his beloved custom 1973 VW Superbeetle that he built.

Read through most of this a while ago but never finished it until recently. In terms of ZA fiction it is pretty darn good but truthfully this whole genre is getting pretty depressing especially if I consider where I live - the People's Republic of Massachusetts. If any real apocalyptic event (EMP, solar flare, etc.) occurred, my family would be totally hosed. It might be worth picking up the sequels, but I think I need to be moving on to something more lighter.

Good storytelling

Full of action and mayhem, Winchester:Over kept me entertained enough to overlook the mediocre writing, which suffered mainly from repetitive and redundant phrasing. (That's not as faint praise as it sounds since I'm a professional editor.) I would have thought the zombies apocalypse was done to death, but this book had some unusual elements that made it well worth the read.

Winchester: Over is the first book in the new Winchester Undead zombie series written by Dave Lund.

The world has been attacked by China with a very old virus that has been manipulated into turning people into the walking dead. At the same time, China hit everyone with an EMP attack that wiped out all electronics, communication, utilities, etc. Bexar and his two best friends, Jack and Malachi have planned for a disaster. They quickly set their plan in motion and get their families on the road to their safe place. The story is also following a government agent, Cliff, whose sole job is to get the government back up and running in case of a disaster. Things don’t work out quite the way any of them planned, though.

This is a great start to what I hope will continue to be a great series. I like that in this series our own government is not who caused the zombies. Cliff is an adaptable, likeable, very capable person, as is Bexar and his wife Jessie. The others are also likeable and all are believable. I, personally, didn’t connect with any one person, but with parts of each person.

Human nature is shown very clearly. At one point Bexar’s group comes upon a roadblock. Then they are attacked by a biker gang. This clearly shows that there are always going to be those who take advantage of a situation, no matter how bad it is. We also see and feel a parent’s anguish his child is gunned down and the sadness of a friend having to kill an infected friend. Would we be as strong?

David Lund has written a story with a lot of moving parts. However, he is keeping the parts consistent and bringing them together smoothly. I look forward to reading more of this series. The series is a great read for those who enjoy zombie stories. Young adults would also enjoy this series. Pick up the first book and enjoy.

This is the first book of the Winchester Undead series. I originally started reading this book looking for editing problems I became so wrapped up in the story that I only found one in the entire book. The truth was it wasn’t even an error it was a term I wasn’t familiar with. So first of all I would like to issue a little caution warning about citing editing errors in a review.

We are introduced to Bexar (pronounced Bear) Reed and his family, he and his life long friends are preppers and are prepared for the end of the world,. However, the end did not come as they had expected, they never expected the end to be the dead rising. As Bexar, his family and friends flee the city to escape death at the hands of the risen dead they are attacked and encounter difficulties just trying to arrive at their prearranged meeting spot.

Meanwhile we meet Cliff, a tactical officer escaping a bunker in Denver, his mission is to ensure the survival of the United States and its government. He fights his way across the country to another large bunker in his search for survivors and a cure.

What makes this book so unique is the delivery of the virus itself, and where it comes from. The hardships that the main characters have to face are dramatic while their successes are thrilling.

I have a love/hate relationship with zombie apocalypse stories. They seem a bit overdone, but each one finds a way to keep me intrigued, nonetheless.

Winchester: Over had me hooked pretty early on. I was enthralled by the characters will to survive and the crazy twists and turns that keep coming their way. This will be the reason I continue to read these books - to see who survives, and how.

It took me a while to grasp the language of the story. Lund has a police background and tends to use military terminology and very specific names of guns. This made it harder for me (who has very little knowledge) to follow the story in the beginning, but eventually I was able to read it with ease. However, I did need a little cheat sheet of all the different acronyms.

My biggest complaint would be the romantic relationships. They are flat and don't appear to have much to them, almost seeming unnecessary to the story.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book. The cliff-hanger ending has me anxious and ready to start reading the next book. No one is safe. Who will survive?!

This well written book extolls the virtues of being prepared for any possible situation as these three families have done. Cleverly coming together to put together a hidden stash of supplies to include weapons, food, and such to help them get through the immediate fallout. Sadly, no one thought about the routes that would have to be taken to get to the hidden site. Even the government’s failsafe plan was not the best, although their faith was placed in a man of honor who is doing his best to ensure the continuation of the United States government as best he can. While everyone had contingency plans in case of an emergency, sadly no one expected what was to come, nor did the enemy expect that men of honor would stand to resurrect the country.

A different book to what I was expecting, but still an enjoyable read. While some of the things that the characters do in the book had me asking "Why? Why don't you have suppressors for your guns?" "Why? Why if you are preppers, why don't you have a generator/solar panels/battery powered 12v car fridge?" For the most part, the things they do make sense, and the tension they were feeling was palpable. In the end, I was hoping that the bikers would somehow all be killed before Jack and Sandra died, (and I'm kinda disappointed that the Author killed off everyone except the main character and his wife and daughter (apart from the Groom Lake military)) but it leaves the story open for the next book to have the bikers seeking revenge.

An exciting novel

Winchester: Over is an exciting start to what I hope is a long series. The zombie stories I like best have characters I can relate to and who feel real to me. These characters are well developed and likeable and had me rooting for them the entire story. There are two storylines that end up connecting in the end in a believable way. The pace picks up speed as the book goes and I feel the pacing was good. There is a good amount of zombie action but the characters stay the main focus. Overall I enjoyed this book very much and appreciated the humanity of the characters. This book is highly recommended and I can't wait to read the next book!

Winchester: Over
Dave Lund

Now I know why there are so many great reviews. This is a very exciting, fast paced , complex story of a small group of friends that have been "prepping". Their planning has paid off in some ways. They encounter the undead, a motorcycle gang, then manage to contact someone who is still with the government, but very far away. The twists that Mr. Lund has incorporated will keep you reading. There is no way to write everything that is good about this story.
I was given an Advanced Reader's Copy in exchange for my honest review.

Ok.....

This is a well written well edited book. However, in my opinion not worth what I paid for it.
The storyline is like all the rest...bug out, military, & crazy bikers. Plus thousands of zombies in herds heading their way.
No stand out moments for me & I don't feel like paying more money to read the next two books.
I really hate to denigrate any author's hard work, but I was just not satisfied....sorry.

I very much enjoyed this book. It’s a prepped/ zombie apocalypse combo with kick ass characters. Very well written and exciting. I especially liked the tactical aspect of the fight scenes. The lingo was exactly what I remember from my deployments. Tactical reloads, press check, cutting the pie on corners. Overall it was a very fun book. Will definitely be reading the next one.

Winchester Undead Book 1

This book has a great plot but I am not a person that likes a lot of technical gun jargon. The technical aspects of the book are just too deep for me. Great story though.

Great Read

I stayed up entirely too late to finish this book, but I could not put it down. It was a fast-paced story that left me anxious for the sequel.
