The Apparition Trilogy #1

Apparition: Book One of The Apparition Series

Rate this book
The ghost haunting Jade Foster's house didn't scare her - until he fell in love with her.

Jade Foster just moved to a new city with her mother and step-dad in the middle of her senior year. She doesn’t know anyone. She has a midterm on Monday. And her house is haunted.

Sean Clayton died at 18 a little over 50 years ago. He needs Jade’s help to move on, but now that he’s met her, he doesn’t want to leave her.

At first, it’s frustrating. High school is hard enough without a ghost everywhere you go. To make matters worse, Sean’s connection to Jade exposes her to dark forces from the afterlife.

Though they’d both be safer if he moved on, Sean will do anything to stay with Jade. Anything.

Absolutely loved it! I have already downloaded the 2nd book in the series. I couldn't get enough of this story. I was so engrossed in the story, it was hard to put it down. I only stopped reading when my eyes couldn't focus anymore. Definitely a page turner. Very interesting and entertaining read. The characters are very deep. I feel I've gotten to know them on an intimate level. The author gives us an in-depth look at the all of the characters inner thoughts. The main character Jade has a rich inner life. We get to see not only the characters outer actions and dialogue, but their rich inner life as well. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Giving a star rating to Apparition by Dylan White is hard to do. On the one hand, I was intrigued by the story. I liked the main character, and though perhaps not the most thorough of world-building, I did enjoy the overall concept.

Not all was puppies and rainbows, however.

There weren’t a lot of typos or errors, but there were some obvious ones that should have been caught by an editor. The narrative style was sloppy and confusing at times as the author bounced back and forth between the many characters, often within the same chapter. The voice was third person omnipresent – which meant that the story felt like we were hearing it second hand through an impartial observer. At times the author took too much time stepping aside from the story to give the reader context through asides instead of letting the reader figure things out on their own. The style reminded me more of a middle grade or children’s fiction than a Young Adult book.

Basically, the narrative voice nearly wrecked the story for me. I almost put the book down in the first 15 minutes. Luckily, the story pulled through.

Overall, it was an okay book. Though I hated the narrative style and voice, I enjoyed the story and the characters. I may go on to read further in the series. Maybe.

This reads like a 15-year-old wrote it on Wattpad. By that standard, it's probably three stars, but compared to actual books it's not great. The inconsistent POV makes it read like someone recounting a series of things that happened instead of a cohesive book, and the main character is so painfully ~not like other girls~ I thought it was supposed to be satire at first. In the same vein, a lot of unexamined casual misogyny. The ghost plotlines are actually pretty interesting, but we spend WAY more time on inane high school drama so it's a no from me.

Wow!
Jade is starting a new life with her mother and step father, moving into a new house brings a new “friend” for Jade, Sean.... loving this story so far, tho
Poor Derek, an abrupt ending for him, but I can’t wait to find out how Jade reacts to this, and where the author is going in regards to Jades dad! Next book here I come :)

Exciting

This book was really good. I enjoyed it a lot. I loved the main characters and how well they had a bond. It was a touching story. But the ending with her dad left me in a yelling zone. I'm so confused with the ending. But can't wait to see what happens.

Thank God I'm not a teenager

Is that what teens really think and feel now days? Our lives were so much simpler and carefree as teens.
The writing was adequate but needs some edits. Not really into the whole eastern mysticism thing either. But hey, it kept my attention.

Too much telling!

Ever hear the old adage "show, don't tell?" Well this story is a perfect example of telling. The book is too full of exposition, explaining every detail and character even before the main character even gets a chance to meet them. And then, when the storyline actually got better, the grammar became unbearable.
Paragraphs written twice and words jumbled all over the place, plus it seemed to increase/get worse as the story went on.

And can you seriously expect me to believe a boy is going to be interested in the protagonist's shoes? I mean, maybe if he was gay, but otherwise, he isn't going to care!

And don't get me started on the movie theatre justification! They don't make money off the tickets for the show, they make money off the concessions! And justifying sneaking in to all the shows is just plain juvenile.

I just can't be nice on this one.

For my clean readers:
Includes underage drinking, sex, bullying, language, possible teenage suicide situation, and mild violence.

My Review: I was contacted by author Dylan White a few months ago to read his new novel, Apparition. I recently got done reading the book and felt I needed some time to really absorb the story and be able to tell you my thoughts perfectly. So here we go... Apparition first and foremost is one of the best ghost stories I have read but not in the scary sense. Most times you think of a Ghost as being bad and haunting someone for revenge or even fun. This story is nothing like that, the ghost is kind and sweet, very protective but wait I am getting ahead of myself here. Let me start from the beginning...

Jade who is the lead female role is the story has just lost her Father to a heart attack and now feels so much pain and sadness in her heart. Jade is someone who likes to be alone and not show her feelings. So once her Mother remarries to a guy she knew is high school. Jade is forced to be uprooted and move to a new town with her Mother and new step-father, Ray. Jade is angry and depressed from all the recent events in her life and feels hopeless. So one night while Jade is getting ready for bed she feel a presents in her bedroom and thinks she see someone as well. Jade hopes it is her Father coming back in spirit form to say goodbye to her. When she sees the figure is not her father but of a young boy around her age she wonders who he really is. Sean is a ghost who died over 70 years ago and still walks the earth. Now his soul purpose is to protect Jade and make her feel happy once again. Soon Jade starts to feel better, begins making new friends and even is crushing on a hot guy at school. Little does she know that Sean is falling for her... but that the least of her worries when Jade finds out that not all ghosts are good and kind. A vengeful apparition is up to no good and will stop at nothing to steal Jade soul.

I absolutely adored the love story between the two main character's. It was heartbreaking and sweet but felt so real and perfect. I felt sorry for Sean many times throughout the book. He felt such a beautiful and innocent love for Jade and even through he knew he could never really be with her like he wanted to. Sean was always there for her and willing to do anything to protect her. I really feel in love with this bittersweet romance. The story had me captivated from page one and had a strong hold on me until the very end. Author, Dylan White is such a wonderful story-teller. He knows how to make the reader fall into Jade's world and feel what she feels right from the start. The only reason I did not give the book a full 5 stars was because I did find a couple mild spelling errors and felt the pace of the book could have been a little faster.

I really did enjoyed Apparition and would definitely want to know what happens next in the story. Apparition is a fun and light read for all ages. The romance was classic and sweet. The paranormal aspect in the book were perfect and so very compelling. I truly hope my readers will give this book a chance and let me tell you you will be glad you did. I know I was!

This novel is somewhat outside my usual genre reading—the paranormal/ghostly elements and teenage high-school drama, etc. But I enjoyed it quite a bit. The characters seemed pretty real, and varied enough. I liked the protagonist, Jade, who seemed fairly wise, smart, and perceptive most of the time. The main interpersonal relationships felt well-crafted and the plot develops with realistic pacing.

It seems like the book would definitely appeal to a modern teen audience. As an adult (closer to Jade's parents' age), I found lots of places where I had nostalgic and amused feelings while watching how events unfold among high-school kids in the 16-17 bracket. I thought the intimate parts—trepidation about sexual matters, drugs, kissing, alcohol, etc, were well-handled.

By the time I got two-thirds of the way into it, I kind of couldn't put it down and finished the last one-third in a single sitting. A couple of late-breaking plot twists were interesting and unexpected. While the story is complete in itself, there are few things left dangling that are presumably handled in the two sequels. (It's billed as book one of a trilogy.)

I did really enjoy the reading experience of this novel, but I just wished the ending would have been packed with a bigger punch. I think a really huge cliffhanger would have worked much nicer. I did enjoy the novel, and I will continue on with the series, but I just felt like something was missing in the end. I also wish that more about Sean would have been told in book one instead of making us wait till book, or that more hints were dropped through out the story about sean in reference to what Jade learns in the end. Overall it was a good story and I am glad that I read it, because I love ghost stories. I recommend this to those who also love a good ghost romance.

Often times when I read books written by newer authors or stories written for a younger audience, it feels awkward and clumsy. I'm not sure I'm describing that correctly, but it took some effort to push myself past the first few chapters.

After my "reader ball" started rolling, I really got into this book. I'm really impressed that what I've been thinking of as "The Ghost and Teenage Ms. Muir" has turned out to be so intriguing and original. Dylan White really captured the adolescent mind and has a great voice for describing the angst of young people in high school.
