Curing The Midas Touch is a collection of poems taken chronologically from one of Smiley’s journals written between August 2011 – February 2013. His poetry brings to light a moment in his spiritual journey when after being filled with pride, he began to see his hopes, visions, and dreams begin to fail. Curing The Midas Touch reflects the process of God refining Smiley in fire so that he could embrace failure and learn from it.
What an incredible book of original poetry. So much writing now a days seems to be just re writes of other stories. We all see it. It seems like books movies and tv shows are busy trying to reclaim their glory days with new takes on old shows. However, with this book you don’t get that. It’s a fresh group of original ideas. Poetry has always been a favorite of mine. I like the old poets, like Frost and Thoreau. One of my favorite poems ever is “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost. The thing I feel most embodies good poetry is in its ability to transmit the emotion of the author surrounding a subject or time. You see it a lot in the modern poetry of music. The way it flows and vibes with the soul. That’s what this book of verse does. It flows and vibes with your soul. You can feel what the author is writing. It’s a window into a deeper part of who he is. I am privileged to have met the author. Smiley is one of those unique people that is traveling a road all to his own. I believe this work truly reflects him as a person. I highly recommend the purchase of this great book of verse. It is easily one of the best books I have reviewed in a long time. I will give it 5 stars whole heartedly and encourage you to support this guy. He will do great things!
I am reading this book of poems right before starting a ministry over again. The music, imagery, and art of this book has been an encouragement, both affirming the freedom to lament and express pain, and reminding of the character of God. I'm sure I'll be re-reading this again, and I would definitely recommend it.
