Montessori in Building Resilient Montessori Schools delivers a practical and actionable method to provide a strong Montessori experience for all children, families, and educators. The first of its kind, this book offers listeners a collection of modern and concrete ways to build an equitable and resilient Montessori program, by discussing topics
Working within the unique, complex ecosystem of Montessori to build a unified community empowered to serve the mission of the school Sharing ways to create a culture of honest conversation based on the values of growth and clarity Offering ways to build strong and resilient systems that will engage the whole community and yield results Perfect for Montessori educators and administrators of all kinds, Montessori in Action will support educators in taking action! This book provides structures, tools, and timetables to strengthen and improve schools. It will also earn a place in the libraries of the parents of Montessori children who desire to create and maintain an equitable environment that benefits all students, regardless of their background.
Please note that this book is not just for Montessori schools; I firmly believe that Slade’s work could be transformational for any school innovator seeking guidance in how to become a resilient, equitable learning community for all who walk through their doors. Slade gifts us with an inspirational, practical, and accessible path, complete with resources and tools to support our journey of implementing Montessori at a school-wide level, particularly in the public sector.
This book is my axis mundi. When I question myself as a school leader, I find my axis mundi, ear tagged, highlighted, and sticky-noted to within an inch of its life. It has become the quiet place, the point of truth at the center of my work with Montessori schools. I venture to say that this axis mundi will serve us in our hopes and dreams for children and this world, especially our notions of equity, liberation, growth, transformation, and our experience of the sacred. This book is where Slade carries her longing and desire for us “to unite in this work and build equitable, resilient schools together through the vision of the whole school as a Montessori prepared environment, the shared values of honest conversations, and consistent use of coherent systems and structures.”
Slade does a brilliant job of merging both Montessori philosophy and practice while using constructivism, equity, and coaching as core elements. Slade uses a poignant metaphor of Earth to describe the essentials and components that are co-conspirators in cultivating a healthy school ecosystem that will not only survive, but thrive. She combines decades of school leadership and practical experience, which come from her highly successful track record in leading both organizational and cultural changes in schools. Slade holds the ground steady so that we can remember who we want to be and gives us a way to become it.
Montessori in Action: Building Resilient Montessori Schools is a powerful call to action that challenges us to embrace an expansive vision of whole-school Montessori.
Full disclosure: I am a colleague and friend of Elizabeth Slade, but I'm the kind of friend who would tell it to her straight if needed.
Luckily, in this case, it is not needed, because this book is amazing. As someone who has worked in multiple public Montessori schools as a teacher and administrator, I am very aware that public Montessori education is necessary, but rife with challenges.
Montessori in Action outlines the One School Montessori Method, a template for how to build and maintain a cohesive, resilient public Montessori school. The book moves quickly from the theoretical to the practical, and gives concrete tips - and documents - that help practitioners to establish a one school culture, engage in honest talk with all stakeholders, and build strong systems to support the important work that is going on at the school.
Elizabeth has the experience needed to write this book - she has managed, coached, and turned around public Montessori schools serving historically disenfranchised students, all while shaping classrooms into thriving Montessori environments.
I am familiar with an have implemented much of the content of the book as I have received and given training in some of the areas covered, and yet there were elements of the book that served as an aha moment to me, and made me realize that there is a better way to do some of the things that we have been doing. Some examples are student transitions and student portfolios - the book helpfully gives a step by step process for each.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is involved in the leadership of a Montessori school, teaching at a Montessori school, or interested in either. Public Montessori schools tend to build their systems, policies and procedures from scratch, and there is no need when there is such a wealth of existing knowledge to benefit from. This is a solidly written, very practical book that I hope gets into the hands of many schools!
