When the rich do it, it’s business. When the poor do it, it’s a crime.
Grey I took revenge on a broken financial system, never expecting that my biggest problem would be the woman who locked me in her basement afterward.
She wants one the reward money for turning me in. Unfortunately for her, we have more in common than she thinks. She’s just as unhinged as I am, and she’s felt the squeeze of the same monster I killed. Maybe we can help each other.
To the world, I’m a murderer. To her, I’m a vigilante.
Tropes: Vigilante mmc Captor fmc Masked man She's more unhinged
This vigilante novella has dark themes and content. Full list of warnings on my website
Lauren’s stories are often emotionally raw, with lots of twists and turns. She describes her writing as “where light meets dark”, which represents how her witty humor compliments the darkness in every story. Instead of trying to mold her writing to fit in a box, she chooses to be unapologetically herself. While her focus is on Romance with dark elements, subgenre is no constraint for her. The common theme in every book is finding love when you least expect it. She enjoys putting her characters through tribulations, allowing their triumphs to be that much more poignant. Make sure you have your seatbelts secured. It’s always a bumpy ride.
When she’s not working, she’s writing. When she’s not writing, she’s spending time with her husband, her friends, or her pets. You might also find her on a horseback trail ride or sitting beside a waterfall in Upstate New York. She has a pretty normal life, yet her stories are anything but.
Apparently - I have a new limit on what I can handle. For me, this one is WAY different from LB's other fics. Not in a bad way, but..... OK.
She tastes like the sin I committed, and I eat it up.
Grey finds himself needing a hiding place after some acts that aren't constitutionally approved. Sweet, completely normal with no psychological problems at all Briar happens to be home when he comes knocking. Absolute insanity happens and they eventually bond over the traumatic pasts that brought them to their current situations. In the end - there IS an HEA for these two.
.....but sometimes even the bad guys get a happy ending when they kill the bad guys who are worse.
I can't tell you the total plot without giving everything away. Think vigilante justice al a Luigi Mangione with a touch of Misery (it's the movie with Kathy Bates, for all you kids out there).
RECOMMEND?: If you don't have any issues related to finances, def recommend. LB always delivers and I love the role reversal here.
TRIGGERS: I feel like giving extra trigger warnings because I was absolutely SHOCKED to learn I had a new one. Who would have thought it?!?! Mayo? No problem! Acorns? No problem! Meat sleave? No problem! Bankruptcy? Nope - too much.
Obviously, you shouldn't be reading LB if you aren't good with ALL sorts of triggers. There is absolutely NO line that woman won't cross. There's the normal: murder, suicide, death, kidnapping, bondage, choking, physical abuse, etc. Absolutely NO food was harmed in this book, thankfully.
The thing that triggered me was related to financial issues. I wouldn't even mention it, but since I didn't realize I had this issue, you might not realize you have it either and therefore I want to warn you. This will spoil the book for you if you read it. If you don't have financial issues, then you can skip this part.
I read this as a palette cleanser (ironic, I know) from all the fantasy I’ve been reading.
I went into this totally blind and absolutely loved it.
Morally Grey follows our two MC’s Grey & Briar. Grey sought revenge & killed those who took his family from him. While on the run, he stumbles upon Briar. What he hoped to just be a quick stop at her house for food, water & cash, became an obsession. Briar is obsessed with Grey. She’s slightly unhinged & has secrets of her own. When they come to light Grey has one choice, stay or run.
Ok but this book was lowkey sweet af. Definitely fast paced, but it’s a novella, I would expect no less. The spice was good, there was a plot, and there was a stabby FMC. Sounds like a good time to me. I’m rooting for Grey & Briar 5ever🤷♀️
Oh how I wish this was a full length novel! The plot was amazing, two morally grey characters finding each other. But since it’s a novella it couldn’t give a build up nor a tonne of depth, but I still enjoyed it.
The level of unhinged Briar was made her really likeable in my eyes, especially when we get some of her traumatic backstory. You can’t help but have empathy for her even though she’s a little psycho.
Grey was a tad stoic but whenever he thought or spoke about his deceased wife you could see how much he loved her and how deeply he could feel. The only way he could be intimate with Briar was if he wore a mask and felt like somebody else, because then he wouldn’t feel so guilty being with her because of his wife. When he finally could do it without the mask it just solidified how much he grew to care for Briar, giving her his all.
This is a great novella if you’re looking for something to breeze through and have a good time as well. Both characters are broken but strong.
Lauren is so full of surprises, though I cannot lie she did hint and taunt us with an upcoming sneaky book 🤭
Grey is only slightly unhinged, some would say he serves his own justice, in the only way he knew how. The governing bodies did nothing to assist him in his time of need or with the mounting evidence. So he does the only thing left and takes matters into his own hands.
Whilst Briar, on the outside is an honest, lonely woman working herself to the bone in an attempt to dig herself out of debt. Until, a man with blue eyes catches her attention, to then knock on her door. What’s a girl gonna do?
Loved it, the little twists Lauren just dropped in were 💯% and not where you thought it would go. Absolutely, brilliantly written, yet another book I couldn’t put down until I finished it.
Grey commits a revenge murder & Briar is obsesses with him by watching news stories about the murderer at large. Color her surprised when he shows up on her doorstep while looking for a place to hide. The jokes on him because she's psycho and he wakes up chained. Interesting story and Biel writes compelling dark romances with tortured characters and she doesn't let up on the intricacies of psychos and their insatiable sex drives and actions. Masked man, gun play, he's her captive, & a plethora of other shenanigans
ABSOLUTELY 💯!! Lauren is my fave for a reason. She consistently writes exceptional pieces of art! Grey did what he had to do & so did Briar... I snatched my kindle up the second this book downloaded & did not stop til I finished the book! Download this one as soon as you can!!
We Have: ✅ Vigilante MMC ✅ Captor FMC ✅ Masked Man ✅ Forced Proximity ✅ She's More Unhinged ✅ Short Read (<150 pages) ✅ Smutty & Psychotic ✅ Dark Humor ✅ Check Trigger Warnings!!
Let me be clear—Lauren Biel is wild as fuck, and this novella is proof.
Morally Grey is the kind of quick, chaotic, morally-corrupt little read you pick up thinking, “Eh, why not?” and then suddenly you’re snort-laughing at the FMC chaining a man to a bed like she’s asking him if he wants coffee.
The vibe? Kidnap first, ask questions later. And the MMC? Masked. Dangerous. Dirty-mouthed. Definitely down bad.
The FMC, though? Oh, she’s the star. Unhinged. Hilarious. Bold in that “I’ve made peace with my insanity” way that just works. She sees a man with a bounty on his head and says, “You know what would be fun? Basement time.”
Their banter?? 10/10. The chemistry?? Kinda deranged, kinda hot. The vibe?? "Reward money, chains, and orgasms"—in that order.
“You’re a little bit of a psycho. You know that, right?” “Yeah, I do.”
If that doesn’t tell you exactly what you’re in for, I don’t know what will.
Was it twisted? Yes. Did it make me cackle? Also yes. Did I highlight like 17 filthy lines that made me consider reading it again immediately? You bet your ass.
This one’s for the girlies who like their romance morally f–ked, their banter razor-sharp, and their FMCs feral. If you enjoyed Sinner’s Retreat or anything else in Lauren’s deliciously unhinged universe, you’ll eat this up.
And the dedication? “This one’s for the girls who drool over mugshots.” Say less. I’m already in the basement.
this was alright for the most part. it sadly has the dead wife trope, and he was still pretty hung up on her until the very end. dude couldn’t even get his 🍆 hard because of the dead wife. i liked the fmc, she wasn’t right in the head and that’s always a win in my book
other info (possible spoilers): 1st person - dual pov widowed mmc no virgins no condoms no sharing owd no omd no cheating no 3rd act breakup hea
This was a fun, quick read. It was dark but not overly and you sympathised with the MMC. The fmc is bonkers and made me laugh. There is a good amount of spice but not too much.
Thank you so much Lauren for allowing me to read this surprise novella! It was completely unhinged!
Briar the FMC is the definition of unhinged! She has secrets of her own, and scars both visible and invisible which truly reflect in her character! She is also a masked man enthusiast! Grey the MMC has demons of his own and within this book demonstrates grief is truly a powerful thing. When we feel lost, how easily we can be pushed to our limits.
Just to summarize this book in one word would be unhinged! So much is going on, and just the depravity is wild; a true traumance for sure! If you’re a fan of dark humour, masked men, revenge and some k!nky sh!t this is for you!
I loved Grey’s story. I could imagine someone’s life going to 💩 because of money and for that poor guy it really did. I’m glad he did what he did. Not only for himself and his family but also for Gloria’s kids. The kids deserved way better than her.
Then we have our we psycho Briar. What do you do when there is a wanted killer on the loose. You observe over him because he’s hot. What do you do when he rocks up at your door. You drug him and chain him up in your sex basement. I totally get that she was a but unhinged but I didn’t for a second see the whole Sid thing coming.
I was never so glad when she decided that she needed to help Grey by getting rid of his stuff. Because I think it would have truly broken him if she did what his wife did.
For a small book it did cover a lot of dark stuff.
You know when you're watching the news and you think that the person of interest that the cops are searching for is hot... yep. Author Lauren Biel is like I got you! And writes this masterpiece! This story is short and packed with suspense, some strong emotions, and tons of spice! And surprisingly she managed to write a story where no food met it's untimely demise lol If you enjoy FMC's that are just as unhinged as the MMC's and some spice with your suspense this is a MUST READ!
3.5 stars for this one! This is my first Lauren Biel book and won’t be my last! I did think it could have been more unhinged, I found Briar a little bit cute, she was a sweet character and Grey just did what he had to do to survive! I enjoyed it, it was a super easy read and I plan to indulge further into more of Lauren’s books 😀
I had the honour of reading this book as an arc read and loved it

📗 Masked MMC 📕strangers to lovers 📘 Forced Proximity 📙 Vigilante Romance 📚 she hold him captive
I spent a good portion of this book considering who the morally grey character was lol and yep.. she is way more unhinged! lol there’s no food play or questionable condiments on this one but there is some pew pew play and some wickedly hot breath play while she smothers him! It was a short read(novella) but it was smokin hawtttt!! #morallygrey #laurenbiel #steamybooks #bookrecs #steamyreads #audiobook #bookaholic #readingtime #bookshelf #instabooks #bookblogger #bookreview #booktok #reading #booklover #bookworm #booknerd #goodreads #aussiebookstagrammers #aussies #australianreaders #darkromance #reading #beyondoverbooked #bookstagrammer #readersofinstagram #instabook #booksofinstagram #booksarelife#darkromance #spicybooklover
Grey is a vigilante with nothing to lose. When the system fails him, he takes matters into his own hands, putting a bullet in a corrupt CEO. But now he’s on the run, desperate to disappear. He thinks he’s found the perfect hiding place when he stumbles upon Briar’s house—what he doesn’t realize is that Briar is far more dangerous than she appears. Drowning in debt and clinging to her sanity, Briar sees Grey as her chance at something more. But her obsession quickly spirals out of control, and she’ll do whatever it takes to keep him safe—even if that means kidnapping him. Lauren Biel is a master of crafting unexpected twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat. Just when you think you know where the story is going, she throws in another surprise. This is one book you won’t be able to put down.
I wasn’t expecting a new release from Lauren Biel, so this was a nice surprise. Her novellas are always dark and intense, and this one pulled me in right away. The early twist caught me off guard, and the ending brought even more. It kept me hooked the whole time.
The characters feel real and raw. Even in such a short story, their pain and motives come through clearly. Briar is a little unhinged, but you get why. Grey is closed off, but his grief adds depth. Together, they just work — messy, but it makes sense.
There’s a strong morally grey vibe throughout. They don’t make good choices, but they make their choices. That edge fits the tone perfectly. And the spice? So good — especially the masked scenes, which also added emotional weight.
It’s fast-paced, easy to read in one sitting, and doesn’t waste time. I do wish it was longer, just to get more of them. But Lauren Biel proves again why she’s a favorite. Twisted, spicy, and impossible to stop reading.
You know what? Yeah. Hell yeah. If you saw those pictures of Luigi and said, “He’s innocent. Look at that smile,” this is for you. If you heard about the shell casings and said, “You know what…matter fact,” then you’ll probably like the FMC in this too. This is short and they’re both a bit unhinged.
Trigger Warnings: animal abuse (off page), captivity, child abuse (mentioned, off page) domestic violence (not between MCs), electro play, erectile dysfunction, gun play, murder, pregnancy loss (mentioned, past & not between MCs)
I was sucked in by a masked man, an unhinged FMC, and the fact that Lauren Biel always has some crazy story to tell. Yes, but no, this was basically a Luigi Mangione fanfic and highlighting the obsession some women had over him. While this was absolutely wild and spicy, it did not sit well with me. Yes, I’m well aware this is fiction, but this… just no.
Also, she gave no TW’s or directions to her site to find TW’s… bad form. If you pick up this book, go to her website to find the TW’s. There were a few topics that contained no trigger, and felt tastelessly addressed.
Star: ⭐️ Steam: 💋 Spice: 🌶️ Dark:🌄dusk: it’s getting darker, main theme of the book but “lighter”
“She tastes like the sin I committed, and I eat it up.”
Dark, spicy novella that follows Grey & Briar, who both are more similar than they think. Grey sought revenge and killed the person who took his family from him. Briar, falls for his mugshot that is shown on her TV screen. She fantasizes about him and draws up sketches of his face. Grey is on the run when he stumbles upon Briar’s home. Briar is super crazy but who doesn’t like crazy!? Even though she locked Grey up in her ex’s sex dungeon, he might happen to fall for her psycho-ness!
Grey is seeking revenge. When he comes face to face with the person that flipped his world upside down he doesn’t hesitate, but now what? Thankfully he stumbles upon Briar’s door. Little did he know she knows exactly who he is and will use that information to her advantage.
I finished this novella in a day! While it wasn’t the spiciest it kept my attention and needed to know how it ended. This novella had an interesting little twist that I enjoyed.
Lauren Biel never misses. Once again, I saw this release drop and was counting down the hours until I could start, and I ATE. THIS. UP. I was not expecting the turn it took at all. It reminded me a lot of Karma, but not in a 'didn't we already do this?' way. More of a 'it was perfect the first time, and THIS!?' 👨🍳💋 Download this one. Seriously. You'll speed right through it and be searching for her next release.

I love almost everything by this dark romance author. I loved the Ride or Die series, which is WAY darker than this book.
Morally Gray has 2 very broken characters that are barely scraping by, both thinking they’d be better off ending things☠️🪦😵. Both their stories are very sad but they eventually find contentment in each other. This book has a bit of a “Misery” element to it, which I wasn’t expecting. Usually the man is more unhinged in Lauren Biel stories but not true in this case, where the FMC is completely psycho😂🔪🔫
This was close to a 5⭐️ read, except I don’t want to reread all the sad and depressing things that happen to these 2 characters. This is definitely a great short story and I highly recommend it for any dark romance readers.
I absolutely loved this book. It was short but had everything you needed to not be left empty handed. Grey is a perfect book boyfriend. He lives with grief but overcomes it to be happy and loved. Briar is a beautiful funny psycho with so much bravery. Briar and Grey are perfect for each other. Spicy 🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶
This novella was a breeze to get through and I had so much fun with it!
The FMC is absolutely a little psycho and I’m a little bit obsessed with her. The MMC is a little of the same but definitely doesn’t reach our FMC’s level of morally grey.
This was honestly such a fun book, the characters were entertaining and it was super fast paced, which you expect with a novella.
