When the rich do it, it’s business. When the poor do it, it’s a crime.
Grey I took revenge on a broken financial system, never expecting that my biggest problem would be the woman who locked me in her basement afterward.
She wants one the reward money for turning me in. Unfortunately for her, we have more in common than she thinks. She’s just as unhinged as I am, and she’s felt the squeeze of the same monster I killed. Maybe we can help each other.
To the world, I’m a murderer. To her, I’m a vigilante.
Tropes: Vigilante mmc Captor fmc Masked man She's more unhinged
This vigilante novella has dark themes and content. Full list of warnings on my website
Lauren’s stories are often emotionally raw, with lots of twists and turns. She describes her writing as “where light meets dark”, which represents how her witty humor compliments the darkness in every story. Instead of trying to mold her writing to fit in a box, she chooses to be unapologetically herself. While her focus is on Romance with dark elements, subgenre is no constraint for her. The common theme in every book is finding love when you least expect it. She enjoys putting her characters through tribulations, allowing their triumphs to be that much more poignant. Make sure you have your seatbelts secured. It’s always a bumpy ride.
When she’s not working, she’s writing. When she’s not writing, she’s spending time with her husband, her friends, or her pets. You might also find her on a horseback trail ride or sitting beside a waterfall in Upstate New York. She has a pretty normal life, yet her stories are anything but.
Apparently - I have a new limit on what I can handle. For me, this one is WAY different from LB's other fics. Not in a bad way, but..... OK.
She tastes like the sin I committed, and I eat it up.
Grey finds himself needing a hiding place after some acts that aren't constitutionally approved. Sweet, completely normal with no psychological problems at all Briar happens to be home when he comes knocking. Absolute insanity happens and they eventually bond over the traumatic pasts that brought them to their current situations. In the end - there IS an HEA for these two.
.....but sometimes even the bad guys get a happy ending when they kill the bad guys who are worse.
I can't tell you the total plot without giving everything away. Think vigilante justice al a Luigi Mangione with a touch of Misery (it's the movie with Kathy Bates, for all you kids out there).
RECOMMEND?: If you don't have any issues related to finances, def recommend. LB always delivers and I love the role reversal here.
TRIGGERS: I feel like giving extra trigger warnings because I was absolutely SHOCKED to learn I had a new one. Who would have thought it?!?! Mayo? No problem! Acorns? No problem! Meat sleave? No problem! Bankruptcy? Nope - too much.
Obviously, you shouldn't be reading LB if you aren't good with ALL sorts of triggers. There is absolutely NO line that woman won't cross. There's the normal: murder, suicide, death, kidnapping, bondage, choking, physical abuse, etc. Absolutely NO food was harmed in this book, thankfully.
The thing that triggered me was related to financial issues. I wouldn't even mention it, but since I didn't realize I had this issue, you might not realize you have it either and therefore I want to warn you. This will spoil the book for you if you read it. If you don't have financial issues, then you can skip this part.
I read this as a palette cleanser (ironic, I know) from all the fantasy I’ve been reading.
I went into this totally blind and absolutely loved it.
Morally Grey follows our two MC’s Grey & Briar. Grey sought revenge & killed those who took his family from him. While on the run, he stumbles upon Briar. What he hoped to just be a quick stop at her house for food, water & cash, became an obsession. Briar is obsessed with Grey. She’s slightly unhinged & has secrets of her own. When they come to light Grey has one choice, stay or run.
Ok but this book was lowkey sweet af. Definitely fast paced, but it’s a novella, I would expect no less. The spice was good, there was a plot, and there was a stabby FMC. Sounds like a good time to me. I’m rooting for Grey & Briar 5ever🤷♀️
Lauren is so full of surprises, though I cannot lie she did hint and taunt us with an upcoming sneaky book 🤭
Grey is only slightly unhinged, some would say he serves his own justice, in the only way he knew how. The governing bodies did nothing to assist him in his time of need or with the mounting evidence. So he does the only thing left and takes matters into his own hands.
Whilst Briar, on the outside is an honest, lonely woman working herself to the bone in an attempt to dig herself out of debt. Until, a man with blue eyes catches her attention, to then knock on her door. What’s a girl gonna do?
Loved it, the little twists Lauren just dropped in were 💯% and not where you thought it would go. Absolutely, brilliantly written, yet another book I couldn’t put down until I finished it.
Obviously, as you can see above I’ve read this book 🤣
I can’t say whether I enjoyed the audio more than reading the book, however, Corvin and Vivienne did a fantastic job at being the characters of Grey and Briar. The duet narration brought these two alive in your ears, I may have scoffed a time or two, Briar’s sense of humour is great and Vivienne worked her magic to ensure as a listener you heard those inflections. Corvin’s voice of Grey was just 🤌 the subtle drop in his tones where needed may make you a little damp and his dominant voice phew! Maybe not a good idea to listen to this whilst at work unless you work alone that is 😉
Oh how I wish this was a full length novel! The plot was amazing, two morally grey characters finding each other. But since it’s a novella it couldn’t give a build up nor a tonne of depth, but I still enjoyed it.
The level of unhinged Briar was made her really likeable in my eyes, especially when we get some of her traumatic backstory. You can’t help but have empathy for her even though she’s a little psycho.
Grey was a tad stoic but whenever he thought or spoke about his deceased wife you could see how much he loved her and how deeply he could feel. The only way he could be intimate with Briar was if he wore a mask and felt like somebody else, because then he wouldn’t feel so guilty being with her because of his wife. When he finally could do it without the mask it just solidified how much he grew to care for Briar, giving her his all.
This is a great novella if you’re looking for something to breeze through and have a good time as well. Both characters are broken but strong.
3.5⭐️ Annie Wilkes meet Luigi Mangione 🫱🏻🫲🏼 the end.
Corvin King and Vivienne Larue are brilliant on this short audio. If you’re the type to grin like the Cheshire cat in the middle of the cereal aisle of a supermarket when Corvin King's smooth voice purrs through your headphones, “Sit on my face, little psycho” then this is for you. This novella is absolutely ridiculous but such a fun listen 😁
Grey commits a revenge murder & Briar is obsesses with him by watching news stories about the murderer at large. Color her surprised when he shows up on her doorstep while looking for a place to hide. The jokes on him because she's psycho and he wakes up chained. Interesting story and Biel writes compelling dark romances with tortured characters and she doesn't let up on the intricacies of psychos and their insatiable sex drives and actions. Masked man, gun play, he's her captive, & a plethora of other shenanigans
ABSOLUTELY 💯!! Lauren is my fave for a reason. She consistently writes exceptional pieces of art! Grey did what he had to do & so did Briar... I snatched my kindle up the second this book downloaded & did not stop til I finished the book! Download this one as soon as you can!!
this was alright for the most part. it sadly has the dead wife trope, and he was still pretty hung up on her until the very end. dude couldn’t even get his 🍆 hard because of the dead wife. i liked the fmc, she wasn’t right in the head and that’s always a win in my book
other info (possible spoilers): 1st person - dual pov widowed mmc no virgins no condoms no sharing owd no omd no cheating no 3rd act breakup hea

Let me be clear—Lauren Biel is wild as fuck, and this novella is proof.
Morally Grey is the kind of quick, chaotic, morally-corrupt little read you pick up thinking, “Eh, why not?” and then suddenly you’re snort-laughing at the FMC chaining a man to a bed like she’s asking him if he wants coffee.
The vibe? Kidnap first, ask questions later. And the MMC? Masked. Dangerous. Dirty-mouthed. Definitely down bad.
The FMC, though? Oh, she’s the star. Unhinged. Hilarious. Bold in that “I’ve made peace with my insanity” way that just works. She sees a man with a bounty on his head and says, “You know what would be fun? Basement time.”
Their banter?? 10/10. The chemistry?? Kinda deranged, kinda hot. The vibe?? "Reward money, chains, and orgasms"—in that order.
“You’re a little bit of a psycho. You know that, right?” “Yeah, I do.”
If that doesn’t tell you exactly what you’re in for, I don’t know what will.
Was it twisted? Yes. Did it make me cackle? Also yes. Did I highlight like 17 filthy lines that made me consider reading it again immediately? You bet your ass.
This one’s for the girlies who like their romance morally f–ked, their banter razor-sharp, and their FMCs feral. If you enjoyed Sinner’s Retreat or anything else in Lauren’s deliciously unhinged universe, you’ll eat this up.
And the dedication? “This one’s for the girls who drool over mugshots.” Say less. I’m already in the basement.
Dang! Another fabulous audiobook from the devious mind of Lauren Biel. Expect to fall in love with Grey and Briar just like I did. The banter, smut, and unhinged characters are true to everything Lauren writes. Have to love it when the FMC is just as unhinged if not more than the MMC!
Extraordinary duet narration by Corvin King and Vivienne Larue.
"What a strange woman I’ve forced my presence upon. She looks positively rabid. Attractive as fuck, but rabid."
♡Let me start this review out by saying Lauren is one of my go-to authors when I need to get out of a book slump! I haven't read a Lauren Biel book that I haven’t loved. Morally Grey is the perfect name to describe this perfect novella. This book was the perfect amount of dark, unhinged, & suspenseful. The banter in this book was top tier, as was the spice!!
The duet narration for this audiobook was perfection! Corvin voiced Grey our golden retriever mmc who truly doesn't know what he's getting himself into stumbling into a strangers house. Vivienne voiced Briar our strong & sassy fmc that bit off more then she could chew inviting a stranger into her home. Together they brought both if our morally grey Mc's to life with an outstanding performance!
If you like your books morally grey & your characters unhinged, this is the book for you!♡
This was a fun, quick read. It was dark but not overly and you sympathised with the MMC. The fmc is bonkers and made me laugh. There is a good amount of spice but not too much.
Thank you so much Lauren for allowing me to read this surprise novella! It was completely unhinged!
Briar the FMC is the definition of unhinged! She has secrets of her own, and scars both visible and invisible which truly reflect in her character! She is also a masked man enthusiast! Grey the MMC has demons of his own and within this book demonstrates grief is truly a powerful thing. When we feel lost, how easily we can be pushed to our limits.
Just to summarize this book in one word would be unhinged! So much is going on, and just the depravity is wild; a true traumance for sure! If you’re a fan of dark humour, masked men, revenge and some k!nky sh!t this is for you!
I loved Grey’s story. I could imagine someone’s life going to 💩 because of money and for that poor guy it really did. I’m glad he did what he did. Not only for himself and his family but also for Gloria’s kids. The kids deserved way better than her.
Then we have our we psycho Briar. What do you do when there is a wanted killer on the loose. You observe over him because he’s hot. What do you do when he rocks up at your door. You drug him and chain him up in your sex basement. I totally get that she was a but unhinged but I didn’t for a second see the whole Sid thing coming.
I was never so glad when she decided that she needed to help Grey by getting rid of his stuff. Because I think it would have truly broken him if she did what his wife did.
For a small book it did cover a lot of dark stuff.
You know when you're watching the news and you think that the person of interest that the cops are searching for is hot... yep. Author Lauren Biel is like I got you! And writes this masterpiece! This story is short and packed with suspense, some strong emotions, and tons of spice! And surprisingly she managed to write a story where no food met it's untimely demise lol If you enjoy FMC's that are just as unhinged as the MMC's and some spice with your suspense this is a MUST READ!
3.5 stars for this one! This is my first Lauren Biel book and won’t be my last! I did think it could have been more unhinged, I found Briar a little bit cute, she was a sweet character and Grey just did what he had to do to survive! I enjoyed it, it was a super easy read and I plan to indulge further into more of Lauren’s books 😀
If you looked Luigi M mugshot and had "feelings", then you might want to check out this spicy novella that gives you all the vibes of that with a twist as well as you have an FMC who for lack of a better term coco for coco puffs but you love her for how off her rocker she is. Honestly these two were very entertaining to read but also provided an obvious commentary on the state of things for so many people who are doing everything right but not only can't get ahead but end up losing it all. So when playing by the rules doesn't work in a corrupt system why not take matters into your own hands. It was fast paced, fun and spicy so all in all a good time. This is my first Lauren Biel book, and I am excited to explore more of her work. ---- This book is about Grey who lost everything, his home and his family all due to the actions of a corrupt banking CEO and a broken financial system. So, he took matters into his own hands but in trying to evade the cops he ends up being kidnapped by an unhinged woman who locked him in her basement. At first, she just wants to hold him until the reward money gets to a size where it could fix her life for her but the more time, they spend together the more they see they have a lot in common and can help each other. So, while other may see him as a murderer to her he is a vigilante beaten down by the same monsters as her.
This one lives up to its title in every possible way. Morally Gray is intense, raw, and unapologetically dark. There are no clean lines here—no easy heroes, no simple choices—just complicated people navigating dangerous emotions and even more dangerous circumstances. Lauren Biel doesn’t soften the edges. The characters are flawed, possessive, and deeply layered. Their connection isn’t sweet or gentle—it’s consuming. The tension simmers from the beginning and builds into something obsessive and powerful. What I appreciated most was the emotional weight. Beneath the darkness and control is vulnerability, and that depth makes the story hit harder. It’s not chaos for shock value—it’s deliberate, heavy, and immersive. Dark and intense Consuming chemistry True morally gray characters If you love romance that explores the shadows without apology, Morally Gray delivers exactly what it promises.
I had the honour of reading this book as an arc read and loved it
This book follows Grey and Briar Grey has lost everything due to the greed of the big banks, and is out for revenge Briar is struggling to make ends meet and is worried that she’s going to lose everything. She’ll get the money that she needs to save her house and he’ll have enough money to get out of the county and escape from the law Whilst they’re together things get hot and heavy, and they start to fall for each other, but can they make it work, and will their plan work and give them both the freedom that they both desperately need? I spent a good portion of this book considering who the morally grey character was lol and yep.. she is way more unhinged! lol there’s no food play or questionable condiments on this one but there is some pew pew play and some wickedly hot breath play while she smothers him!
