Reboot: How to Manage Career Breaks and Return with Greater Success

'It's hard for me to say this, knowing the great feedback most of my peers had for you, but at this stage for our business in India, we just require someone who has some more entertainment marketing experience than you do. Hence, we wouldn't be taking your candidature forward for this position.'

When Issac quit his dream job of Head of Marketing at PUMA in 2015 and took a career break to study screenwriting in New York, little did he know what he had signed up for.

Over the next eighteen months, he would face over a hundred rejections from famed brands, headhunters, publishers, talent agencies and producers. After being rejected in the final interview rounds of brands like Uber, Netflix and Airbnb, he slowly and steadily clawed his way back into a mainstream career. Issac went on to lead a team of over a hundred people at Discovery, having built their direct-to-consumer OTT business in Asia-Pacific (discovery+), and has authored two books - all in a span of five years since that career break.

Over the past two years, Issac spoke to more than fifty working professionals, all of whom went through a break in their career for various reasons. Reboot is an intimate, honest and rich compendium of all those experiences, mistakes, lows and highs that people confronted with a career break go through. It shares the message that no matter the odds you are up against, a career break is always temporary, and, in many cases, it can even prove to be life-changing.

I am a consumer marketing professional turned author this year.

Late 2015, I took a break from a decade-old (perhaps) successful marketing career to devote more time to the craft of writing.

During this break, I graduated from the Screenwriting Program of the New York Film Academy in New York. my first book, 'Buffering Love' was my 4th attempt in 12 months to write something that I feel, could have a breathing life in the world, instead of it gathering rust on my machine.

The stories are inspired by my personal experiences with apps and saw the light of day thanks to Penguin Random House.

Prior to taking up the (near suicidal) decision to pursue writing, I was the Marketing Head for PUMA India for 4 years.

My interests revolve around sports, films and storytelling. I often look up to O’Henry, Woody Allen, Raymond Chandler, Jeffrey Archer and Herge for inspiration.

I often contribute to Mint Lounge, Maxim and FilterCopy as a columnist and I currently lead Marketing for two of Discovery India's channels - Discovery JEET and D Kids.

“Clarity about what you don't want to do is as important as what you want to do.”

Let's normalize career breaks. when Issac quit his dream job of head marketing at Puma in 2015 and took a career break to study screenwriting in New York, little did he know what he had signed up for. Over the next 18 months he would face over hundred rejections from fame brands, publishers, talent agencies and producers. After being rejected in the final rounds of interview of brands like Uber, Netflix and Airbnb he slowly and steadly clawed his way back into a mainstream career, leading a team of over hundred people at Discovery. 'Reboot' is his honest account on experiences, mistakes, emotional turmoil people go through while in a career break.

'Reboot' is a nonfiction, self-help book that encompasses all the real life situations related to career and career breaks. Burn outs are real and in today's world where everything feels like walking on eggshells it's even crucial to take steps that will benefit in long run. This book is not about what to do and what not to do, rather it speaks of how to navigate and deal with it even when one is clueless about the next step. One particular thing I liked about this book is it not only stresses on voluntary sabbatical but also gives ample attention to involuntary layoffs, which makes this book even more realistic.

Writing style is great, I was surprised how engaging this book was. It just flowed with the narrative. Finished half of it in one go. Reading about those Indian entrepreneurs and professionals was equally inspiring. And this book was something new for me. I really think this book will help people immensely.

Reboot: How to Manage Career Breaks and Return with Greater Success by Issac John is a reader-friendly guide on how one can make a comeback after taking a sabbatical (a career break). Usually, gap years on one's resume are looked down upon, especially in India. However, as John argues, things are changing and the world is becoming more open to the idea of taking time off and figuring out 'what next!'

The book has a three-fold purpose - to normalize career breaks, to highlight the unique things that can happen while one is on a career break, and to share some practical tips and advice that can help you make a comeback. It effectively captures the highs and lows of a career break and offers a practical framework to follow to plan a break and rejoin the workforce.

The book consists of anecdotes from John's life, including two voluntary breaks he took to pursue different things. He shares the good, the bad, and everything that went into the grind before his efforts saw the light of day. Besides, he also describes the experiences from the lives of other professionals who took breaks in their careers and then made successful comebacks. Their journey was also full of negotiations, hard conversations, and tough choices. Nevertheless, everything was worth it for the fulfilment in the long run.

John's writing is easy and comprehensible. His dealing with an important topic such as career break is commendable and the way this book breaks down the process is enjoyable to read. I believe that this book will help both seasoned professionals as well as those who are just starting. Be it paternal breaks, finances, societal taboos, and more; the book attempts to cover the breadth of career break and does so grcefully.

I understand that career breaks can be terrifying. I also took a mini career break and found it really difficult to stay motivated during that time. Books like these can not only help in managing our time effectively during the break but also help in staying motivated.

The author has shared his experience and learnings from his two career breaks. He has also shared a plethora of stories of successful career pivots and has shared his key takeaways from their journeys. There is so much that I've learned about planning and navigating through different career opportunities.

Not every story is a smooth running fairy tale, there’s always something that happens on the negative side, there is always a story which makes someone have a break, or put them in a situation wherein they don’t know what is the future in terms of career and how they are going to make a return. Success for such cases is always a prime focus and no one really knows what is going to happen, and what would be the consequences. A lot of times the reason for such stages wherein one has to take a career break is something unpredictable, one might get fired, another one might have a situation wherein some unfortunate events made him lose his job. The author Issac John is a well versed professional in this domain, he has put himself in the position of being the Marketing head for PUMA India for 4 years. He is a regular contributor to the famous magazines like Mint Lounge, Filtercopy, Maxim etc. He puts forward himself as a consumer marketing professional turned into an author. Well, to go about the book, one can say that it is a professional hand out to people who have faced such situations in their career lifes. After pandemic such situations have been common, wherein people have landed themselves into places wherein they don’t know what and how to manage such situations. Often it makes them take steps in the wrong direction and can also be fatal sometimes if not for life then surely for their careers. Well, we are always curious about if the person writing all such comeback stuff did actually ever belong to that part or phase of life. The author himself has faced this decision and taken notes and compiled them well enough to do the right thing. What does this book provide you as an individual? Well it’s the right idea of what things you sign up for once you are in the zone of no having the career you wished for. The book tells you what happens when the break for the career hits you which is something only a few can define. It can be also seen that the book not only tells you what happens when there are breakages in the career it also tells you why you can normalise taking a break in the career and how you can actually succeed with it. There is a constant flow of information to real experiences defining what good and bad can happen with these career breaks. Certainly one needs to stand on their toes, to tell them that these are the situations and I need to fight them in a certain way in order to find the right direction to my life as well as career. Reboot not only makes you recharged with energy, it also makes one understand what the world oriented to careers actually is! How it defines certain areas of life, and how it basically works! And in its counter, how a human should act, to make it better. As far as books, majorly self help books are concerned, I have always found the reviews to be segregated in sections wherein everything is specific, but herein I found that the book is compiled in such a way, that it creates a flow of understanding about the topic. Certainly someone going through the thoughts of taking a break, or forcefully/unfortunately on a break should read it to understand, analyse and implement their situation. To summarise, I would say it's an easy read. Simply being able to understand the content might be the right characteristic. And surely, Reboot makes you learn about how to manage career breaks and then find success! Appreciation to the author.

Reboot: A Guide to Overcoming Career Breaks is an insightful and inspiring book written by Issac, a former Head of Marketing at PUMA who decided to take a break from his successful career to pursue his passion for screenwriting. Little did he know that this decision would lead him down a path of rejection and self-doubt. However, through sheer determination and perseverance, he was able to overcome the obstacles and rebuild his career.

The book is a collection of stories from over fifty working professionals who have gone through a career break for various reasons. He shares his own experiences and those of others, giving readers a sense of the emotions and challenges that come with taking a break from one's career.

One of the most striking things about Reboot is the way in which Issac reframes the concept of a career break. Instead of seeing it as a setback or failure, he presents it as an opportunity for growth and self-discovery. He acknowledges that taking a break can be daunting, but he also emphasizes that it can be a chance to reassess one's priorities, gain new skills and perspectives, and even find a new direction in life.

The book is divided into three sections: The Reboot Journey, Navigating the Reboot, and Thriving After the Reboot. Each section provides practical tips, advice, and insights that readers can use to navigate their own career break. Issac draws on his own experiences, as well as those of the people he interviewed, to offer advice on everything from networking and job hunting to managing stress and maintaining a positive mindset.

What sets Reboot apart from other career guides is its emphasis on empathy and human connection. Issac's writing is warm, personable, and engaging. He doesn't talk down to readers or offer simplistic solutions to complex problems. Instead, he shares his own vulnerabilities and insecurities, creating a sense of solidarity with his audience.

In conclusion, Reboot is an excellent resource for anyone who is contemplating or experiencing a career break. It is a well-written and engaging book that offers practical advice, empathy, and inspiration. Issac's message is clear: no matter what obstacles you face, a career break is not the end of the road - it can be a new beginning.

As a lover of literature, I recently had the pleasure of reading a truly captivating book that left a lasting impression on me.

This a wonderful collection of stories that explore the idea of taking a break from one's professional career to pursue other passions and interests. The author's narrative style is simply superb, with a pace that is perfectly balanced and a writing style that is both eloquent and engaging. The book is a testament to the power of storytelling and the ability of literature to inspire, inform, and transform our lives.

The book is centered around the life experiences of John, a man who made two deliberate breaks from his professional career to pursue other interests. Through John's story, the author explores the transformative power of taking a break and embarking on a new path. John's journey is one that is filled with ups and downs, and the author does an excellent job of bringing his experiences to life in a way that is both relatable and emotionally charged.

‘Career breaks aren't good.’ ‘You are doing so good why do you want to take a break?’ ‘You have a good salary and a good home; why do you want to disrupt your life?’

People make all these statements but fail to fathom that happiness doesn't lie in a good salary or a job that society admires. These are not the days of the industrial revolution- when you needed a job for survival because there were only a few options. The times and the perspectives have changed, and so has the mindset. So before we proceed, are you happy with your current job?

Reboot- how to manage career breaks and return with success is the debut work of Issac John that explains career breaks, how and when to take them, why they become a necessity, how these breaks don't disrupt your career, and how to make the most out of them. He also discusses how you can plan them, how to come out to the family about that and your plan. I appreciate the inclusion of taking care of mental health while on the break as a different chapter in this book. The insights discussed here are worth your time.

In the third part, the author discusses the comeback and encourages you to join the same work profile if that is what you excel in. It is not a failure but a chance you took and is an act of courage. He also discusses how you can minimise the chances of a salary cut. The book is well-crafted and covers almost every aspect. Yes, he has discussed financial planning, too.

The book speaks to you. The writing style is comprehensible, and the pace is smooth. If this were not a debut work, it would have been worth 5 stars, but I shall go for 4.5 out of 5 stars for now. Anyway, this is a book that I shall recommend to every working individual. I hope you find this book well and that it encourages you to think about taking that awaited step. Whenever you do, just come here and comment your views below.

Reboot: How to Manage Career Breaks and Return with Greater Success penned by Issac John.

Pages- 200

Language - English

Genre- personal transformation and analysis.

This book is very important for those people who take a break in their life from professional life. There comes a point in life for all of us when we need a break in life to change from one job to another and sometimes to attain our passion. But before making this decision, we have to think a lot about what people will say. Sometimes these decisions prove to be thriving and Sometimes futile for some people. He has shared his journey in this book. How did he take a career break and come back successfully? The most important thing for me to learn from the author was how the author did not give up and achieved success despite being rejected so many times. There was a time in his life when he was rejected by all his dream companies like Netflix, Uber, Airbnb, etc. due to which he started going into depression. Finally, they then get a job and along with that they also get prosperity in life.
Along with this, he has also told in this book that when we take a break then how to maintain our life, health, and mental health and how to save money and invest for the future. This book is a useful pick for those people who want to take a break in their career but are afraid to take it. Also, its language is lenient so that you can understand it skillfully. Overall it proved to be a helpful book because I also faced so many rejections in my career and I was confused about how to deal with these rejections and find a perfect job.

This book became a source of light in the darkness for me.

The book is a manual that will allow you to comprehend how vocations breaks are taken and individuals can make an extraordinary progress in it as opposed to simply squandering it.The book resembles a coach that will keep you helping on each aspect. There is a customary drift of data to genuine examinations characterizing what magnificent and horrendous can appear with those calling breaks.

The narrative of the book spins around Issac's life as he quit a truly amazing job in Panther as the head of promoting to make a lifelong in screenwriting. The book is centered more around how breaks develop us, the writer believes us should feel that regardless of how long the misfortune is the bob will come in the end. The substance of the book is more than any self improvement guide as it motivates as well as works on the most common way of enjoying reprieves from one vocation and making one in another. The interaction is rearranged by separating every one of the obstacles and impediments one will look subsequent to having some time off from one laid out vocation.

The book's magnificence lies not just in the writer's story of his own choice to enjoy some time off from work and his exercises during that time, yet in addition in the tremendous information granted to the peruser about getting back in the game, exploring scouts, creating heavenly CVs, overseeing dismissal, restarting without any preparation, and in any event, drawing illustrations from the pandemic.

Language and show is in actuality well. The portrayals were perfect. blissful perusing

Of all the aspects to focus on while trying to build a successful career along with successful social and mental perspectives toward one's life is career breaks!
Though it might look insignificant to most of us out there considering the why and what of the concept of a career break, to build a prosperous life financially, socially, and emotionally, one must calculate their moves accordingly... Reboot brings one such calculative approach to its readers. In his book, Issac John talks about career breaks and guides his readers on how to make their breaks productive and step back as even stronger beings.
The author, having had two somewhat voluntary or involuntary career breaks at the same time is a suitable fit to guide others through their breaks. One can easily know about or relate to the author's journey as well as it's mentioned and narrated within the book as you proceed.
The book consists of more real-life stories, conversations, and opinions of other people, who have coped with their career breaks. Experience is always the best aspect of any self-help book and this one provides you with much!
Whether you're someone who's ever encountered a career break or not, this book is gonna be an effective and productive read for each and every one who pays heed. For me, the book was full of lots of new teachings and ideas, especially for youngsters who lack much work-life experience, are beginners in their jobs but mind that, even a retired 60 years old could take lessons from this as their perspective.

By identifying common themes, the book provides principles for effectively managing a career break. As a subject that is deeply personal and sensitive, career breaks are best understood by those who have experienced them.

The book is a true masterpiece of wisdom and intelligence, with its insightful chapters that cover obstacles, norms, practical canvas, mindset, decisions, commitments, development, failures, faith, COVID and more. The author has skillfully woven together almost 50 stories to convey the book's main theme of "taking flaws to the flows," leaving a lasting impact on readers.

One of the standout features of the book is its vision of management and practical lifestyle, which can help individuals overcome career obstacles and achieve growth. The book's logical organization and attention to important parameters create a professional yet engaging interior that is filled with valuable ideas and content.

Through these stories, the book encourages readers to embrace this truth and use it to create something beautiful. This book is an essential read for all professionals, not just those considering career changes.

The book's language is straightforward and unpretentious, and it is recommended to be read slowly to fully appreciate its contents. While the real-life experiences shared in the book are uplifting and relevant, they also acknowledge the fragility of the journey and the unpredictability of outcomes.

Whether you're looking for a self-help book or a general read, this versatile and captivating book is definitely worth a read.

Quitting a job is dreadful for reasons, and taking a break is even more concerning because of the uncertainty of the future as well as the high rate of rejections while attempting to join a corporate company after a break or compromising with salary or other benefits.

Issac John quit his dream job of Head of Marketing at PUMA in 2015 and took a career break to study screenwriting in New York.

Over the next eighteen months, he faced numerous rejections from famed brands like Netflix, Uber and Airbnb, eventually he made his way to lead a team of over a hundred people at Discovery, authored two books and all in a span of five years since that career break.

This book is an honest account of his experiences, mistakes and the lessons. A memoir cum business tips book, this is a cozy book of 160 pages with the author's life story, that's written in a friendly way, like a mentor and has key takeaways after each chapter of the book for every professional considering a break from the job.

What's great about the book is that it's not only an account of how he took the decision for a break or what he did during the break, it talks a great deal about leaping for a comeback, dealing with recruiters, building CVs, facing rejections, starting again from scratch and lessons from Covid. It's an insightful book with a great deal of stuff to learn about.

This book is particularly noteworthy for those people who take a career break in their life, but after taking a career break, they are often unable to come out of it. Some people are afraid of taking a career break. They think that if we take this break, we will not be able to get these golden opportunities again. Some people take a career break, but after that, they have to confront difficulties like repudiation and they do not find golden possibilities easily again. The author also confronted all these things in his life. He also got a lot of rejection, especially from the companies which were his dream companies like Netflix, Uber, etc. But he did not give up, he kept attempting again and again and finally, he got his dream job.

I have not endured so many rejections in my life. That's why I can't interpret this pain. But I presume this will prove to be a very beneficial book for many people. According to me, this is a remarkably useful book because in this the author has elucidated it in the easy vernacular and the language is easy to discern. The never giving up the belief of the author has impressed me a lot which inspires me that I too can take a break in my career and come back successfully.
