People today best know this editorialist, journalist, and fabulist for his short story, An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge and his lexicon.
The informative sardonic view of human nature alongside his vehemence as a critic with his motto, "nothing matters," earned him the nickname "Bitter Bierce."
People knew Bierce despite his reputation as a searing critic, however, to encourage younger poet George Sterling and fiction author W.C. Morrow.
Bierce employed a distinctive style especially in his stories. This style often embraces an abrupt beginning, dark imagery, vague references to time, limited descriptions, the theme of war, and impossible events.
Bierce disappeared in December 1913 at the age of 71 years. People think that he traveled to Mexico to gain a firsthand perspective on ongoing revolution of that country.
Theories abound on a mystery, ultimate fate of Bierce. He in one of his final letters stated: "Good-bye. Η εποχή μας είναι μια εποχή του απροσδόκητου, του έκτακτου - του παράξενου και του αδρανώς εκφυλισμένου. Ποιος είναι ο καλύτερος χρόνος για να αναστηθούν οι ιστορίες του Ambrose Bierce;
Άγριος και αδιάφορος στην φρικιαστικά κωμική προσέγγιση της ζωής και του θανάτου μέσω εγκληματικών ενεργειών φανερώνεται ολοκάθαρα ο συγγραφέας
και δηλώνω ένθερμη οπαδός της σατανικής ευφυΐας του.

Όταν η τοξικότητα κάθε φυσικής παρουσίας ενσωματώνεται άριστα σε ένα περιβάλλον παθολογικά σάπιο και ψυχικά νοσηρό τότε ίσως έστω και μια μορφή εναντίωσης στις κοινωνικές νόρμες της έννομης τρομοκρατίας για την διαφύλαξη του θεσμικού και κάθε κρατικού φορέα να κάνει τη διαφορά.
Δεν πρόκειται να δημιουργήσει απαραίτητα κοινωνική ισότητα και λιγότερους υποψήφιους με θηριώδη και σαρκοβόρα διάθεση ατομικής κυριαρχίας,
μα τουλάχιστον ίσως να νιώσει καλύτερα.
Και αυτό ειναι κάτι!...
Πίσω απο τη λέσχη γονεοκτόνων κρύβονται έγκυρες
και διαχρονικές αλήθειες σχετικά με την έλλειψη νομιμότητας που έχουν οι πολιτιστικοί και πολιτικοί ηγέτες, καθώς οι πολίτες που δημιουργούν και διαιωνίζουν με το γενετήσιο ένστικτο τους το μέλλον, βλέπουν και καταλαβαίνουν ότι μπορούν να αντιμετωπίσουν την πραγματικότητα,
ότι γενικά η ανεπάρκεια και το κέρδος κυβερνούν
τους υποταγμένους εθελοντές μιζέριας και χαμέρπειας.
Αυτοί, οι ίδιοι πολίτες το δέχονται σαν κληρονομικό νόσημα και δεν απογοητεύονται σε βαθμό εξεγερμένης αυτολύπησης απο τέτοια θέματα ζωής.
Καλή ανάγνωση.
Πολλούς ασπασμούς.

I love it. I just...love it. It probably makes me a bad person, but I love the assumption of all of Bierce's characters that they are decent people. "Whether or not [hypnotism] could be employed by a bad man for an unworthy purpose, I am unable to say," says the protagonist after mesmerizing his parents into killing each other.
The diction is the joy of the satire, the overly polite and genteel way the brigands talk. "The valor of my poor parents in the hour of danger can never cease to be a matter of pride and gratification," the hypnotist sincerely intones. When a burglars' disagreement lends itself well to another patricide, the protagonist "could not help but admiring his spirit of sensitiveness and admired him and for a moment was disposed to overlook his fault [..] but, as I said, I removed the old man from this veil of tears." "Even at that age," says a protagonist on his way to dispose of an unwanted baby his mother has murdered, "I was passionately fond of children." It's so over-the-top, as are the comfortable way that people go about doing terrible things and the court proceedings of obscenely corrupt officials of ridiculous bureaucracies. (This latter point recommends Bierce's work to the serious law student.) Sometimes it gets downright crazy, like a music box that not only barks like a dog and crows at dawn, but also breaks the 10 commandments--it dizzies the mind to think how a box would, for example, violate the 7th, or the 8th. (Breaking the 6th, of course, is elemental to everything that inhabits Bierce's world.) So terrible and so, so, funny.

İyi yazılmış öyküler, kolay okunuyorlar fakat tanıtımda bahsedilen anlatımın kara mizah tarafı güçlü değil. Sadece gariplik sezdim. Yazar hakkında biraz araştırma yaptım. Bu tür hikayeler yalnızca onun gibi birinden beklenirdi zaten. Şeytanın Sözlüğü, An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge ve Yaşamın Ortasından: Askerlerin ve Sivillerin Öyküleri okunacaklar listemde. Çevirmen Volkan Atmaca'nın emeğine sağlık.

..Έχοντας ως βασικά και στέρεα υλικά της αλλόκοτης γραφής του, το μαύρο χιούμορ κ το γκροτέσκο ο Ambrose Pierce διηγείται μέσα από τους αντιήρωες του, την εξόντωση με την πιο αλλοπρόσαλλη μέθοδο που μπορεί να σκαρφιστεί κανείς, συγγενών, γονέων κ λοιπών παράπλευρων θυμάτων.. Ωστόσο, μέσα από την τραγική ειρωνεία, το χονδροειδές κ την παγερή αδιαφορία με την οποία ξετυλίγει την κάθε μια ξεχωριστά από τις 4 ιστορίες του, θίγονται τα κακά κ τα άσχημα μιας κοινωνίας βουτηγμένης στη σήψη κ στην βία, στην οποία ο καθένας είτε δρώντας ατομικά είτε με το προσωπείο της εξουσίας, είναι ικανός γ το χειρότερο και το ακομη χειροτερο ..αν ο 'Bitter' Bierce ζούσε σήμερα θα γνώριζε όπως κ τότε ομοίως την αντιπάθεια, την εχθρότητα, το άφατο μίσος, τον διωγμό, την πυρά, την προσωπική φυγή προς το θάνατο, έννοιες την μακαβριότατα των οποίων ο ίδιος άλλωστε περιέγραψε με αφοπλιστικό τρόπο στα τέσσερα διηγήματα του μικρού αυτού τόμου.

The least I can say about this work is that it is elegant! This collection reflects the wonderful creativity of an author who wrote mostly during the 1800s and up to the early decades of the 20th century; that is to say a long time prior to the emergence of neuroscience, neurocognitive theories, and the bulk of what makes the realm of today's psychiatry.
In spite of that, the stories form an indirect study of criminology under a certain set of circumstances to which the title hints. Each of the four cases gives an account of the mental decadence of children brought up under very unbalanced conditions. The parents in each tale are in a great part responsible for the mental state of sons who had gradually drowned in sociopathology.
Thus, the stories corroborates the psychological findings in relation to childhood trauma and the birth of psychopathology. Yet, at the same time, they highlight, in a socio-historical reading, the evils which spread by the turn of the century, and which were the direct cause for atrocious crimes; such evils feature greed, burglary, the collapse of morality, fraudulent medical care...

Από αυτά τα βιβλία που έχουν ως μοναδικό σκοπό να σε "σοκάρουν" χωρίς όμως να το καταφέρνουν. Βεβιασμένη και ασυνάρτητη πλοκή, λειψό λεξιλόγιο, καμία εμβάθυνση σε κίνητρα, κρυαδες που πλασάρονται ως "μαύρο" χιούμορ. Η υποτιθέμενη αφοπλιστικη βιαιότητα στερείται φαντασίας, μπορώ να σκεφτώ δεκάδες άλλες λογοτεχνικές περιπτώσεις που χωρίς όλες αυτές τις βλακωδεις περιγραφές δεκάχρονου, μεταδίδουν μια πολύ πιο άμεση εικόνα της ενστικτώδους βίας. Γενικά άθλιο. Απορώ γιατί μεταφράζονται τέτοιες βλακείες ενώ τεράστια έργα παραμένουν αμεταφραστα. Παρότι σχετικά φτηνό, σίγουρα κλαίω τα λεφτά μου. Δεν έχω διαβάσει κάτι άλλο του ίδιου, αλλά αν όλα τα βιβλία του είναι παρόμοιου ύφους, μιλαμε για ακόμα μια περίπτωση συγγραφέα που πλασάρεται ως ποιοτικός μόνο και μόνο επειδή όσα γράφει αρέσουν σε μερικούς αδαείς λατρείς του καλτ και επειδή τυχαίνει να έχει γράψει έναν αιώνα πριν, οπότε καθαγιάζεται λόγω παλαιότητας.

Delightfully nasty stories with deadpan black humor. The whole collection can be read in 30 minutes. Just look at these first lines:
Early one June morning in 1872 I murdered my father—an act which made a deep impression on me at the time.

My name is Boffer Bings. I was born of honest parents in one of the humbler walks of life, my father being a manufacturer of dog-oil and my mother having a small studio in the shadow of the village church, where she disposed of unwelcome babes.

Having murdered my mother under circumstances of singular atrocity, I was arrested and put upon my trial, which lasted seven years. In charging the jury, the judge of the Court of Acquittal remarked that it was one of the most ghastly crimes that he had ever been called upon to explain away.

And to mix things up, these final lines from another parenticide:
Such are a few of my principal experiments in the mysterious force or agency known as hypnotic suggestion. Whether or not it could be employed by a bad man for an unworthy purpose I am unable to say.

Maybe I'm just really morbid but this book hooked me in right from the title and kept my attention all the way to the end. It consists of 4 short stories, all of which are about people who killed their parents. Disturbing, right? But so compelling (and hilarious!) to read. What I love best is that the author Bierce does not rely on graphic details of the murders but instead uses a more pedantic prose style, peppered with plenty of dry wit and whimsy, to hike up the horror of the stories. And these stories are absolutely horrific, grotesque, appalling... I also love the fact that the protagonists are all so matter-of-fact about their crimes, as if it was just a minor inconvenience in their lives.

Ambrose Bierce once gave a review which I would here apply to his The Parenticide Club: "The covers of this book are entirely too far apart." Yet, in a way, I loved it. It is truly horrific and appalling. The title says all you need to know: it's a collection of stories in which children murder their parents; Bierce's dry, lightly whimsical, journalistic prose starkly outlined against the backdrop of a gruesome, vicious celebration of murder after murder. Never, ever read it. But, in a way, I did love it.
To understand my four star review of a book that I shelved as appalling, a book in which half of my half-hour reading was spent rereading sentences in appalled disbelief, a bit of background may be necessary. I read a good bit, and have for some time. When I was in high school, my class was assigned Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge in which Bierce describes in his always exquisite prose, dry as the only sherry I'll drink, the botched hanging of a Civil War spy and his subsequent escape. Then, when he is almost safely in the home he is longing to reach, he feels a tremendous pressure on his neck and sees a blinding flash of light. The hanging hadn't failed, and he never escaped: the entire episode was in his head.
I had read stories where the protagonist dies, but I had never before encountered one in which the protagonist was nonexistent, or a real story arc in which there was no real conflict--I hadn't known it was allowed. Bierce gave us a hero, then revealed that while we were rooting for him, dodging bullets with him, feeling the exhaustion he was feeling, this entire time our hero was falling with a noose under his left ear. Well, I loved his prose, and was fascinated with his ability to take nihilism to an entirely new level, so I got his Devil's Dictionary (he wanted to title it the Cynic's Word Book), and he now holds a special place in my heart as one of the most quotable authors on the planet (Chesterton is obviously greater than the rest, in several senses).
So, this book, this collection of short stories was what I expected. I was braced, and I bookended him with Bach to avoid the "slit carotid artery and do push-ups in the bathtub" impulse that he inevitably seems able to inspire. The most astonishing achievement is his ability to make such horrific villains, such truly amoral bastards as the main characters of these stories seem almost sympathetic.

How could it be that a book dedicated to gloss parricides makes me laugh so much? Ambrose Bierce master combination of black humor, sarcasm and cynicism makes the trick and your inner parricidal tendencies will make you laugh and laugh.

Muy buena compilación de relatos breves. La traducción no considero que sea la mejor, hay algunos detalles que le cambiaría, pero es buena. Y algunos de los relatos de Bierce incluidos en este ejemplar ya se han vuelto de mis favoritos del autor.

Otra colección de relatos cortos de terror de Ambroce Bierce con fabulosas historias, cuentos y pasajes. Tiene relatos brillantes y algunos pasajes que son poco más que ideas. Algunas veces se repite con historias muy parecidas, otras desde un punto de partida muy parecido encuentra desenlaces diversos. Siempre es muy entretenido de leer. Sus 200 páginas se te pasaran volando. Un libro que ha envejecido formidablemente.
