I started with the rogueish intelligence officer, then went back through as the hacker with a haunted past, and finally the field operative with ties to the mysterious Panis Vitae. Each character reveals new angles of the overarching bioterrorist plot, which I really appreciated not just surface-level flavor text, but meaningful variation in the story.

When I was a child, Choose Your Own Adventure books were everywhere, and I couldn’t wait to go on the next 'expedition' with my mother to the local library—to see what adventures were waiting on the shelves. In those days, 'Space Vampire' by Edward Packard, was my absolute favorite.
These days, by some decision of 'the powers that be' that fair time is long gone; and these types of books have all but vanished. Most of the time I want a carefully crafted story that pulls me into its world, but sometimes I want to participate—to let my imagination run wild. Ghost Operations Division by Jackson Nightingale gave me exactly that. The branching storylines and clever use of ciphers kept me turning pages, even when I failed to reach a successful conclusion. In fact, I’ve rarely had so much fun running into every possible wall along the way.
What makes this book even more meaningful is the author’s mission. Nightingale has said it was designed for people who don’t like to read, or struggle with reading. Considering that only about 20% of the continental U.S. reads for pleasure and an estimated 21% of adults are functionally illiterate (that's almost 1:4), I couldn’t support his effort more. Other reviewers have praised the book’s inventive format, calling it “like a video game in your hands” and “ingenious in its character-driven branching.” To me, it represents more than entertainment—it’s about inclusivity, expanding the kinds of stories available, and inviting more people back into the joy of reading.

What really makes this book stand out is the depth of the three playable characters. Each one has a compelling backstory and unique perspective, which made me want to replay the book just to experience every route. I first went with the tech savvy intelligence agent, thinking I’d play it smart,but let’s just say I didn’t make it out alive. My second run, with the ex military operative, was a lot more explosive and action packed, and I actually made it to one of the more satisfying endings.
The pacing is tight, the choices feel meaningful, and the stakes are genuinely high. The story drops you into a race against a terrifying bioterrorist group, and the mystery surrounding the Panis Vitae kept me guessing until the end well, one of the ends, anyway. There are over 40 of them, and some are absolutely brutal. It’s not a book you read once and shelve; it’s a dynamic experience, full of risk, reward, and regret.
If you love globe trotting thrills and the idea of saving the world or failing miserably trying this is a must read. Jackson Nightingale has created a world that dares you to out think it. I’ll definitely be diving back in to see what I missed.

This is definitely not a usual spy / thriller read.
The book takes the reading process into the next level, letting the reader to choose the characters, their missions and adventures.
Imagine playing an interactive board game that has variety of outcomes, and you get to make the decisions.
I read it through several times, picking each of the suggested characters, and it was amazing how storylines unwrapped in a completely different way every time. I'm still not sure if I covered all the possible versions :-))).
It is also clear that the author did extensive research on various military topics, making the book better than any usual spy novel.
One thing I would recommend is getting a paper version of the book, since there is a constant need to jump from page to page and doing it from the phone reading app is not that convenient.

A dozen and more ways to have fun.
This was a really fun ride taking you through your own covert ops in a choose your own destiny kind of way. Nightingale did a fantastic job and I loved the quirky comments here and there from the character I chose. You could read this book a dozen times and get any number of outcomes. Be warned don't give up or your story ends.

This book is pure adrenaline! As a fan of Indiana Jones and Mission Impossible, I was hooked from the first page. The ability to choose your character and path gives it incredible replay value. Every decision feels meaningful and deadly. I couldn't put it down!
