Threads Trilogy #3

Threads: Sequins, Stars and Spotlights

Rate this book
Four girls have four dreams. Crow is on the way to becoming an international fashion designer. Jenny's been discovered by a Broadway composer. Edie still wants to go to Harvard. Nonie isn't really sure, but knows it's something fashion-related and wonderful. They're growing up and on the brink of glittering careers. So why are their lives so complicated? Why does success demand sacrifices, and which ones are they willing to make?

In this, the final book of the Threads trilogy, Nonie discovers that life is just beginning. The girls have choices to make. Who will wait for fame? Who will emerge an outright star? Who will fall in love? And who will turn her back on all her dreams? This time the answers are in New York. It's a long way for Nonie to travel, especially with only one teeny-weeny wheelie bag. But for the sake of her friendships, Nonie will do whatever it takes.

My name’s Sophia, and I write about girls discovering their inner power. Sometimes they’re fashion designers, sometimes they’re would-be pop stars and sometimes they’re spies. They’re always a lot braver than they know, and I love it when they finally figure that out.

Since I won the Times/Chicken House competition in 2009 my books have been published around the world, from Germany to Brazil and Japan. When I’m not writing them, I tend to be at home in London with my family, or travelling around the place, talking about writing. (More about that here … ) As a writing teacher, I have been a visiting lecturer in writing for children at City University and City Lit, and a Consultant Fellow of the Royal Literary Fund.

In the third and (sob!) final installment in the Threads Trilogy, our four girls are growing up, and their futures are within reach. Except there are still many questions, and the answers can be found in New York - fashion central! But it's not all as fabulous as it sounds, and Nonie will do whatever it takes to keep her friends heads above water.

Wow! I can not believe that it is actually over. In a way, the more I read the more upset I got, knowing that with the turn of every page I was getting closer to the very end. But wow, what a way to end it!
In the longest book in the series, the girls are all choosing their paths in life. Except Nonie. She still has no idea how to pursue her fashion dream job. Everybody else seems to not need her anymore, and Nonie feels left behind.
I think I preferred Nonie a lot more than Edie in this book. Edie started to seem like a different character, and Jenny was self-centred as always. Also, I felt like I read a lot less about Crow this time, which was a bit of a disappointment. Nonie, on the other hand, seemed to stand out more. Her personality shining out of the pages. I loved her even more. She is a friend you'd be lucky to have.
After reading about Alexander (from Beads, Boys and Bangles) in so much detail before, I thought that Liam would of been talked about more than he was. I felt quite empty at the lack of romantic scenes. Still, I instantly warmed to his character.
Sophia has tackled many issues in this series - like Child Soldiers in Uganda. In Sequins, Stars & Spotlights, she covers depression as well. She wrote about it gently but skillfully, something only a handful of authors can do.
I love how in each book there seems to be a trip to a different location. First London, then India and now New York! Each place was described spot on, and after reading how Sophia writes about them, I am desperate to visit them all.
What is utterly wonderful about this Trilogy is that we can see how the characters mature in each book. When they all start to get jobs and leave school, it really pulled on my heartstrings. They have all grown up, and it was fantastic to watch the transformations.
The ending had me very close to tears, even the last few words were perfect. Somethings seemed a tad predictable, but surprisingly that didn't ruin the book for me at all. Despite me desperately wanting Threads not to finish, I am so happy at how it all came to a close. When I snapped this novel shut for the last time, I was left with a warm and wonderful feeling.
I am extremely excited about the rumour going around saying that Threads is being made into a TV series sometime soon. Let's just hope they capture the characters and plots perfectly, and how Sophia would want it.
Although this book was absolutely amazing, the middle seemed to drag on a bit, but it quickly picked up the pace again later. Sequins, Stars & Spotlights is one novel that I will treasure on my bookshelf for many years to come. It deserves 4.5/5 in my opinion.
And this sounds silly, but I think in many years from now, the Threads Trilogy should be Classics that everyone should read!

What can I say about this book, except that I love it?
It is the perfect finale to the trilogy!

It is so heartwarming and realistic to see all the girls grow up and find their path in life and Nonie‘s struggles are so incredibly relatable. In a way I felt really relieved to see that it is just a part of life not to know who you are and what your purpose is.
And Sophia Bennett depicted in such a beautiful way that it is ok to be overwhelmed by the process of growing up and having to make all those decisions.

The book is just amazing and I can only recommend to read this trilogy, even if you think that you are already to old for this kind of books. It deals with very important and mature topics in a heartwarming and interesting narrative.

I didn’t realize this was a series until I found it on a random book warehouse sale! I loved the second book in the series and this was even better! Highly dramatic of course but so fast paced and well written.

Aber was?

Since reading Threads when it was initially published back in 2009 I've been a huge fan of Sophia Bennett's books. Now we have the third and final instalment of the Threads trilogy, Sequins, Stars & Spotlights. I really wish there was going to be more of these books because I think they're absolutely fantastic. They're full to the brim with fun, colour and the most incredible clothes.

What I like about Sophia's books, in particular, is that they have a combination of quite serious, thought provoking issues and the exciting, glamorous world of fashion. I think many authors wouldn't be able to make this work but Sophia does and exceptionally well. Sequins, Stars & Spotlights, like the previous stories, has a heavy focus on Crow, the teenage fashion designer from Uganda. She's one of my favourite characters because she's so unusual and talented. She's also remarkably loyal which, in my opinion, is one of the best qualities any character could have (or any person in fact).

Through Crow, Bennett delves into the real crisis of girls missing out on the opportunity of education, predominantly in Africa. I believe education should be a fundamental human right so I loved reading about Edie (another great character) and Crow doing all they could to help reduce the injustice that faces many children. I really want one of the 'Holding Hands' print bags; please can someone produce these for charity!

Another issue dealt with in this final Threads story was that of depression. It was sensitively handled and formed a significant element of the storyline. Depression is an illness that I have rarely read about in children's fiction so it was interesting reading about it from the perspective of the teenage protagonists.

I think that my favourite part of Sophia's stories and particularly this one, is the group of wonderful characters. The four friends, Nonie, Jenny, Edie and Crow, make these lovely stories excellent. They lead lives that most could only dream of, attending live fashions shows and saving the world (well trying to at least). I also liked how we got to meet each character's family properly in this story, for understanding their backgrounds helped me to understand each of them better too.

New York is one of my favourite places on Earth so there wasn't really much of a chance of me not loving this book. I love the buzz of the place and this is captured superbly in Sequins, Stars & Spotlights. I also adore musicals, so I liked reading about one of the main characters, Jenny of course, taking on a role on Broadway.

I wish there was going to be another Threads book but I can't wait to see what Sophia Bennett writes next. I have no doubts that I'll enjoy it tremendously. If you haven't read this series, please do.

Sequins, Stars and Spotlights is the third book in the Threads trilogy. Having enjoyed the two previous books I was looking forward to starting this one and it wasn't a disappointment.

Four friends Nonie, Jenny, Edie and Crow are all moving forward in their career despite still being in school. They each have a passion and dream and they are getting life changing opportunities sooner than they expected. Crow has an opportunity to design an important wedding dress for a well known model, Jenny is getting a chance to perform on stage on Broadway, Edie is trying to get into Harvard whilst helping her friends mum and Nonie is left wondering where she fits into the fashion career.

I thought it was good how the girls were taking such responsibility despite their young ages and it was interesting to read there perspectives on working life. With all the family and friendship issues it can be harder than it seems to fit in a job and school.

I liked that the girls had such a good friendship and that we got to see how they would cope when they were all in different parts of the world. Although I thought London was a great place to set the book I particularly enjoyed reading the chapters in New York as well.

Fashion is a big part of the book and Crows ability as a fashion design is really interesting to read. I like how she only uses the right fabric and tries her best to help charities and her homeland rather than just getting money out of it for herself.

This series of books has been fantastic and the characters are always doing the right things. A brilliant read even if you have no interest in fashion.

The long awaited final book in the Threads Series, Sequins, Stars and Spotlights is every bit amazing, colourful and loveable as the first two books. Though this book could be read as a stand-alone, I suggest you read the other two books first, not only because you’ll enjoy this one so much more if you do, but because they’re SIMPLY AMAZING.
Threads began the tale of Nonie, lover of all things fashion, Edie, who just wants to save the world, Jenny, rising star of the screen and stage, and Crow, who can draw and design amazing clothes. The second book, Boys, Beads and Bangles, sees the girls take on releasing their first clothing line, among other adventures. In Sequins, Stars and Spotlights, the girls are back, this time each trying to realise their own dreams.

Every girl has to read these books, which are perfect for all ages. You don’t need to like fashion to enjoy the girls’ friendship or the hilarious way Nonie narrates the story. You will find yourself drawn into the wonderful world of Threads and never want it to end. (Though I must say I do love the ending. Perfect). This is definitely a series for when you need a bit of glamour, sparkles and good-old fashion fun to brighten up your day.

I really think this is an utterly fabulous book. It had a great ending which rounded up the whole series really well. It was also written really well. I could empathise easily with Nonie - when she was stressed and worried, I felt stressed and worried, when she was happy, I felt happy.
It really is a shame that this book is the last in the series - I would read the next book if there was one. I love the whole trilogy, there isn't one book that I wouldn't give a five out of five to.
When I read the series I became friends with all the characters - finnishing the books was like saying goodbye and I didn't want to!
Atleast I can just read the whole series again...

This book involves situations that we have all been in/will be in.
Long, uncomfortable kisses on windy park benches, fights with friends inn awkward places and moments of sheer wonder.

This book says it all... how to fulfil your dreams and keep people happy, how to back down from the crowds and realise your potential.

A great sequel to Threads #1
