This isn't a fairytale!

This is a dark retelling of the Sleeping Beauty fairytale. In this version, Prince Charming decides not to wake up Briar Rose, so rather than happily ever after, the world decays under the influence of the wicked fairy godmother as Briar sleeps for 100 years. At the beginning of this story, Briar is woken up by a mystery stranger and she tries to make sense of the dark world around her along with some companions that she picks up along the way. It's an intriguing twist on the fairy tale, and the art is impressive. It's well worth a read.

"Briar: Sleep No More" is a dark, yet hopeful, re-envisioning of the classic "Sleeping Beauty" tale. In this fast paced book Briar Rose awakens to find that her charming prince left her slumbering while her kingdom disintegrated due to his incompetence. Waking after a hundred years she assembles a band of rag tag followers and sets out to restore her birthright through one bloody and violent adventure after another. Essentially, this book is a mash up of the classic "Sleeping Beauty" story and "Game of Thrones" with a little bit of "Seven Samurai" thrown in to the mix.

Minął wiek odkąd Różyczka – księżniczka i przyszła następczyni Królestwa Cierniostu – po raz ostatni zamknęła oczy. Na wskutek ukłucia wrzecionem, które okazało się proroczą wizją, Róża odpłynęła do świata wiecznych snów. Król wraz z Królową chwytali się każdej złudnej nadziei, każdej pokrzepiającej myśli, każdego możliwego rozwiązania, ale wedle starej przepowiedni, ich córka miała się już więcej nie zbudzić.
Podczas lat żałoby kraj pogrążał się w coraz większym zamęcie i chaosie. Bezustanne walki, krwawe wojny, brutalne starcia, niekończące się krucjaty… Po minionych czasach pozostało mgliste wspomnienie, a wszystko to, co dobre, miłe i prawe, przepadło w meandrach pamięci najstarszych mieszkańców Cierniostu.
Do momentu, gdy nieoczekiwanie - po stu latach śnienia - Różyczka powraca do żywych.
Wtedy właśnie zaczyna się prawdziwa przygoda, bo zdradzona księżniczka łaknie krwi. I okrutnej zemsty. W towarzystwie wesołej kompanii – trzech zupełnie do siebie niepasujących wyrzutków społecznych – udaje się w długą wędrówkę.
Jest zdeterminowana, by przywrócić swojemu królestwu dawny blask oraz chwałę.

Spała, i spała, i spała, przez sto bardzo długich lat, aż wreszcie nadszedł jej czas: obudziła się, wraz z nią – w jej zimnym jeszcze sercu - obudziło się także pragnienie pomsty. Księżniczka więc chwyciła za miecz i ruszyła na spotkanie ze śmiercią.
Ładnie się zaczyna, co?
Ładnie, a my takie właśnie historie lubimy. Trochę mroczne i trochę na przekór cukierkowym opowieściom; lubimy, gdy pod lukrowaną powłoką kryje się gorzkie nadzienie; lubimy patrzeć jak zmienia się perspektywa; lubimy myśleć – ‘a co by było gdyby…’
Trójka autorów – Christopher Cantwell, German Garcia, Matheus Lopes – także lubili bawić się różnymi motywami, co zresztą doskonale widać na przykładzie ich twórczości.
Róża: Nie śpij już’’ to świetna wariacja na temat znanego mitu śpiącej królewny. Znanego, klasycznego, a jednak obróconego w tak ciekawy i tak rozrywkowy sposób, że dzisiaj może on służyć jako świetny wstęp do dłuższej i bardziej angażującej historii. Na kanwie baśni o księżniczce zaklętej w ponad stuletni sen, Christopher Cantwell buduje nowe, odświeżone zaplecze tych wydarzeń. Odświeżone i mówiąc szczerze… Chyba nieco bliższe współczesnemu czytelnikowi, niż romantyczna legenda dziewczęcia wybudzonego pocałunkiem złotowłosego przystojniaka. No dobrze; to nadal brzmi nieźle, ale zastanawiając się nad właściwymi motywacjami głównej bohaterki – która w tradycyjnym utworze bohaterką ‘jest i jednocześnie nie jest’ (raczej bierną postacią wokół której toczy się akcja), można dojść do oczywistych wniosków – Różyczce motywacje zostały w zasadzie odebrane, a jedyne co jej dano, to czas, by w spokoju mogła oczekiwać przybycia księcia na białym rumaku; potem wiadomo, ‘długo i szczęśliwe, bla bla bla’.
Cantwell poszedł o krok dalej, nadając Róży odpowiednią rolę. Rolę, będącą kluczową wobec całego utworu, jak i jego ogólnego wydźwięku, lecz przede wszystkim – barwną, żywą, przekonującą. Sylwetka ospałej trzpiotki owszem, przebija się przez pierwsze karty komiksu, jednak dość szybko schodzi na drugi plan, ponieważ księżniczka wreszcie zyskuje właściwą trójwymiarowość. Skrzywdzona, oszukana i boleśnie zdradzona dziewczyna, dość szybko orientuje się, że postawa obojętnej i przegranej, wcale nie może być słuszna, a już tym bardziej zgodna z jej rzeczywistymi emocjami. Napędzana pragnieniem zemsty, żądzą uzyskania choć krztyny sprawiedliwości, chęcią otrzymania tego, co jej należne, prze przed siebie, wikłając się w szeroki ciąg niebezpiecznych zdarzeń.
Brzmi to nieco pompatycznie, na szczęście jedynie w teorii. Autor wzbogacił fabułę o przygodową nutę, ale ukształtował ją również w kierunku lekkiego, zabawnego czasoumilcza: gęsta baśniowość, spora dawka absurdu, groteski, czarnego humoru; morze bluzgów, hojna doza dowcipu i ciętego żartu, czynią z ,,Róży’’ przyjemną, jednocześnie także dość oryginalną rozrywkę.
Oczywiście w tym miejscu nie można nie wspomnieć o pracy Garcii i Lopesa. Obaj Panowie udźwignęli ciężar historii i doskonale ją uzupełnili. Cienka, acz wyrazista kreska świetnie oddawała charakter postaci - ich ruchy, mimka, gesty – zostały pieczołowicie zsynchronizowane z toczącą się fabułą, a kolory – trochę pasteli, trochę ciemnych barw, odrobina kontrastu – nadały ogółowi cukierkowo – mroczny nastrój.

I really enjoyed this! Picked up from my local library, this tale of Briar Rose is so well drawn. The artwork is amazing and made for a much deeper reading experience.

I, as stupid as fuck, thought this is a completed comic when I saw the link, until I realized, it was the first vol that has been completed, I was on the third issue.
I'm crying.
I love it. First of all, the synopsis is amazing. I know it sounds like a feminist manifest but Briar Rose, aka Sleeping Beauty is cute but badass, deadly but silly, a great combination. Hope it will go on like this.
The art is amazing; but the coloring is smth. Depends on the characters or scenes, it's almost monochromatic yet color harmony is a pleasure to eyes. Outlines are sketch-ish, drawings are not seriously realistic, when there is a specific case, the style slightly chances. All of these makes it fabulous.

Briar is a dark, twisted retelling of the Sleeping Beauty myth, set in a decaying, medieval-like world filled with magic, fantastical creatures, and a heavy sense of despair. Briar Rose, the sleeping beauty of this tale, awakens from her slumber many years in the future, only to find her kingdom destroyed and the land filled with hopelessness. Though she's said to be the key to a better future, I found it unclear what that future actually is.
As the story unfolds, Briar teams up with a mysterious blue-skinned man, who may have a hidden agenda, and a wizard who can’t cast spells. Together, they are pursued by one of her godmother’s minions, creating a sense of constant tension.
While the plot initially felt a bit confusing and I wasn’t sure if it would hold my interest, it ultimately kept me engaged. The balance between action and character dialogue worked well, and the story avoided becoming too slow or overwhelming.
The best part is the artwork. The illustrations and coloring perfectly portray the decay and hopelessness of Briar’s world, adding depth to the grim atmosphere. Despite some confusion with the plot, the visuals and tone make this graphic novel an intriguing and immersive read.

Briar Rose wakes to a world she barely knows, an apocalyptic wasteland full of witches, prophesy, and chaos. Gathering herself together and almost dying several times, she ends Volume 1 with 3 friends (a resurrected skeletal knight, a cast-off warlock, and a warrior of the cold lands) and sets off for revenge against Grendrid, the fairy godmother who betrayed her.
BOOM Studios is putting out great stuff with fairy tales (Once and Future being the best so far, in my opinion) and I look forward to continuing this as well as picking up other titles of a fairy tale nature.

This had a really solid start and an interesting premise. But it lost me somewhere along the way. The old English annoyed me and I didn’t find the humour particularly funny. It’s very vulgar, very profane.
But it’s not all bad. I can see this being a great source material for a tv adaptation.

April 18, 2025Very fun! A lot of these retellings can fall into a flattening of what makes them so powerful and interesting, but this doesn't sink into any sort of simple reframing, instead focusing on the changed world and new adventure posed to the heroine.
The humor is just the right level of crass without being so bawdy to make it eyerolling. I'm eager to continue with it!

Die Zeichnungen passen sehr gut zur Geschichte, aber die konnte mich leider nicht zu 100% überzeugen. Ich dachte Briar ist selbständiger, aber sie ist leider bei weitem nicht so furchteinflössend wie ich erhofft hatte.

C’était sympa mais j’avais de trop grandes attentes je pense ! J’aime beaucoup le design un peu zombie de cette belle au bois dormant éveillée dans un monde très sombre, un peu post apo médiéval. Mais ça manque d’un truc en plus, de visuels plus frappants pour vraiment me faire aimer

2.5 stars, the constant insults was weird also, it’s like the author tried really hard to make it feminist but lacked knowledges of feminism.
The heroine and her friends lack genuine friendship (they constantly insult each other and bring each other down) which makes it a real turn off to me.
The art cover was gorgeous but the art inside was not as good. The drawings were confusing, sometimes Briar looks 20 sometimes she looks 100 years old, randomly.
The modern style insults were so weird because the setting was giving middle age atmosphere (it’s like watching GoT but make them speak like Gen Z’s).
Not surprised that the author is a male.

Entered into this unsure. But the amazing art kept me interested long enough for Cantwell’s story to win me over. To be honest it starts great… I just wasn’t sure I was ready for another fairy tale revisited type comic. I was wrong. The post-fairy tale realm of briar is wonderful. Glad their is going to be more.

This made me laugh out loud more than once. Briar was hilarious with her outdated sassy speech, Spider quickly won her way into my heart, and the story had me thoroughly grabbed. It's a darker take on Sleeping Beauty, yes, but it didn't get into grimdark, a genre I stay far from. It kept some lightness and heart, it gave you hope, which I found endearing.

Pour une première bande dessinée, « Briar – La Rebelle au Bois Dormant » a été une révélation. Je ne savais pas trop à quoi m'attendre en me lançant dans ce format, mais j'ai tout de suite été captivée par la richesse visuelle et le rythme rapide de la narration. le dessin est tout simplement sublime : les couleurs sombres, les ambiances post-apocalyptiques et les expressions intenses des personnages donnent une véritable force à chaque planche. On ressent autant l'émotion que l'action à travers le trait précis et expressif de l'illustrateur.
L'histoire, elle, détourne habilement le conte que l'on connaît pour en faire une fable sombre, violente et résolument moderne. Cent ans après son sommeil, Briar Rose n'est plus une princesse passive : elle devient une survivante marquée, déterminée, et en quête de justice. Son combat contre un monde brisé et les figures du pouvoir corrompu m'a vraiment plu. On est clairement dans ce que j'aime : un univers dur, des héros imparfaits, une magie en ruine et une bonne dose de revanche.
Au fil de son périple, Briar croise la route de personnages aussi abîmés que charismatiques, chacun apportant une nuance à l'histoire et jouant un rôle clé dans son évolution. Ces compagnons de fortune, loin des archétypes classiques, enrichissent non seulement l'intrigue mais participent pleinement à la reconstruction de Briar. Ce premier tome a parfaitement su allier un univers original, une héroïne forte et un style graphique percutant. Je suis conquise par cette découverte et j'ai vraiment hâte de lire la suite !

L'histoire, elle, détourne habilement le conte que l'on connaît pour en faire une fable sombre, violente et résolument moderne. Cent ans après son sommeil, Briar Rose n'est plus une princesse passive : elle devient une survivante marquée, déterminée, et en quête de justice. Son combat contre un monde brisé et les figures du pouvoir corrompu m'a vraiment plu. On est clairement dans ce que j'aime : un univers dur, des héros imparfaits, une magie en ruine et une bonne dose de revanche.
Au fil de son périple, Briar croise la route de personnages aussi abîmés que charismatiques, chacun apportant une nuance à l'histoire et jouant un rôle clé dans son évolution. Ces compagnons de fortune, loin des archétypes classiques, enrichissent non seulement l'intrigue mais participent pleinement à la reconstruction de Briar. In questa rivisitazione dark, il principe decide di sposare la principessa addormentata senza svegliarla, per impadronirsi del suo regno (dopotutto "una regina dormiente non si ribella mai al suo re") e condurre un'enorme guerra di conquista dei reami circostanti.
Risvegliata dopo 100 anni grazie a una figura sconosciuta, Rosaspina scopre che il mondo intorno a lei è cambiato, caduto sotto il controllo dei una fata oscura , distrutto da guerre sanguinose e corruzione.
Se nelle prime pagine Rosaspina appare come una ragazza ingenua, rassegnata al suo destino e terrorizzata dall'idea di riaddormentarsi, man mano che il suo viaggio dell'eroe prosegue tra sofferenze e difficoltà, la protagonista subisce una crescita perdendo quel poco di innocenza che ancora le rimaneva imparando a ribellarsi e a combattere.
Rosaspina, insieme alla sua compagnia di emarginati sociali (Ragno, che l'ha svegliata, Roop, la strega ultima discendente della Madrina Dorcas e il Capitano Bly, il resuscitato) decide di mettersi in viaggio per raggiungere chi l'ha tradita e condannata a un lungo sonno, determinata a vendicarsi e a riprendersi il regno che le appartiene per riportarlo al suo antico splendore.
I disegni di Germán García sono vividi e accurati, in cui i toni pastello "Da fiaba" delle prime pagine si scuriscono lentamente fino a formare un immaginario dark con punte punk e horror senza però perdere la morbidezza dei tratti.
Il linguaggio anche segue questa direzione e dagli inizi aulici e incantevoli del principio si scurisce fino a diventare ironico, graffiante e anche sboccato.
