Broken Angel: A Danny Roberts Novel

Rate this book
Broken Angel is the first instalment in the Danny Roberts series of suspense/thriller novels based in the north of England. With a hint of gangland rivalry and interspersed with plenty of the authors characteristic sarcastic, dry humour, the story makes for an entertaining and thrilling read.

Danny Roberts is a businessman. He is also a man who will sort out your 'problems' for you; for a price of course.

One morning, Danny wakes up with a naked woman in his bed. The fact that he does not know who she is or where she came from is the first link in a chain of events that will threaten to destroy everything he cares for.

Threaten is the one thing you do not do to Danny Roberts!

Broken Angel by Darren Scanlon is a well-crafted novella set in the small town of Milton Keynes, the City in the Forest of Buckinghamshire in jolly old England. Danny ‘Steve’ Roberts, heir to his father’s Robertson’s Warehousing enterprise, has connections to an old-time black market network perpetuated by old Tom, the owner of the Dog & Partridge tavern. Things run smoothly in the quaint little community until organized crime rears its head in the visage of Vincenzo ‘Vincent’ Angel and his creepy henchman, Viktor Lazlowsky. The death of Joanne Lawson provides the kickoff to this melodramatic whodunit, and Steve vs. Vincent is the main event that keeps you turning pages until the smoke clears and the blood dries.

What makes this work is the pastoral ambiance provided by the rural English backdrop. Scanlon brings us from the prim and proper offices of Robertson’s, kept tidy by Steve’s sidekick Jess Chapman, to the staid and steadfast environs of the Dog & Partridge. It hardly seems the scenario for a rape/murder, but when Joanne is found dead and all signs point to the volatile Vinnie Angel, the climactic confrontation is not far ahead. Johnny Samson, Tony Howcroft and Dave Saunders are Steve’s loyal followers, determined to even the odds as their friend takes a hand in bringing the bad guy to justice.

The author’s webpage hints at a series to follow, and Broken Angel by Darren Scanlon will keep you waiting impatiently for more to come.

I found this book through LinkedIn. I was looking for thrillers to review since I am currently promoting one of my thrillers. I’m glad I found this author too. Broken Angel: A Danny Roberts Novel is set in England. The main character Danny Roberts is of Irish decent and a decent sort. The book opens with him giving himself stitches while riding in a car. He runs the family shipping business but takes on cases on the side. His father’s longtime friend and bar owner Tom is just one of the people he loves. He is asked to find a women that disappeared three weeks before. It is discovered that Danny spent the night with her right before she is killed. Will he find out why she died and what it had to do with him?

The only thing that was difficult for me was the language at times. The characters are mostly British and I wasn’t familiar with all of their slang. With that being said, the book was quite enjoyable. Scanlon has a great way of describing action and bringing his characters to life. I was hooked from the first page to the last. Turns out most of the people working at the shipping companies are ex-military. They work as mercenaries to solve problems. I really liked the characters and story line. I will definitely be looking to review any future books Darren Scanlon will allow me too. I give this book 4.3/5 Stars.

If you like thrillers and action, I would definitely recommend this book. I am so glad I am making all of these fabulous connections. I never would have found the books I have reviewed recently if it weren’t for my social media connections. Go out and add the book to your reading list now.

Until the next great read…

Danny Robertson is a loveably rogue, your black-marketer that runs shady deals with his warehousing as a front. People who need help that can't go to the police goes to Danny.
Danny and his gang holds out in the local pub, and after a late night out in the pub, the next morning Danny wakes up to find a young naked woman sleeping next to him. Danny do not remember a thing about last night and before he could ask her anything, the woman leaves without saying a word. A few days later and he finds out she was raped and murdered.
When Danny finds out a rival gang killed her he set out for revenge.

A really enjoyably read.
