Second book in the series and a lot better than the first one. The story started off almost right after the first book, where Eva and Zoe escaped the war torn Greece which is at the blink of a civil war, and to Australia in starting their new life.

Although there is still a bit too much "coincidence" in my opinion with Henry, Muller, Rhimes, Father H and Greta, I like that the story is realistic about lives moving to a new country - and not everything is good and rosy as everyone thinks. Love the supporting cast - Earl and Elena and of course I've always enjoyed reading the dynamics between Eva and Zoe. The book is a little bit lengthy comparing to the previous one, comprising with two different plot lines. You'll enjoy this series if you treat it as reading Eva and Zoe's journey in being and growing together. I'm going to start the 3rd book in the series soon.

WWII. Greece. Eva Muller (Hans’ daughter) & Zoe Lambros (former Greek Resistance movement) managed to survive Hitler’s Holocaust.
10/1947, Bankstown Migrant Camp Sydney, Australia. Eva Muller was trying to teach Zoe Lambros (18, Eva’s lesbian partner) how to speak English.
The 2 of them went to see Mrs. Jenkins (landlady) about renting a place.
Earl “Wiggy” Wiggins (gay) was giving Eva a tour of the Johnson Brothers’ Biscuit factory.
She is a process worker who boxes biscuits.
Eva wanted Zoe to go to the Sydney College of the Arts.
Dr. Hannah Koch (55+, psychiatrist) was seeing Eva on a regular scheduled basis.
Henry Franz (retired Sergeant) was to report to the Australian War Crimes Unit Director’s office ASAP.

Director Fischer said Major Hans Muller (German, 55+) wanted Henry to work in Larissa, Greece.
Jack “Bean” Stalk 1-armed supervisor) was putting Eva with Mrs. Dunning Flossy Flute Fingers section.
Dr. Koch found Eva an interpreting job with the Interpreter Division.
Ms. Alice Birdswaite showed Henry to his office.
How will Eva Muller & Zoe Lambros lives turn out?

Warning: This book contains extremely graphic adult content, violence, or expletive language &/or uncensored sexually explicit material which is only suitable for mature readers. It may be offensive or have potential adverse psychological effects on the reader.

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written historical fiction book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great WWII movie, or better yet a mini TV series. To be continued. A very easy rating of 5 stars.

In this second book of the series, Eva and Zoe have relocated to Australia and are trying to settle into their new country. They find an apartment, both get jobs and meet some new friends and get back in touch with old friends. But old dangers lurk for them that must be dealt with for them to truly get on with their lives.

There are a number of surprises in the book, especially if you've read #1. This book might have been subtitled "Resurrection" for all of the people who return from the dead. There isn't really any major plot tension until just about the very end, which sets it apart from its wartime predecessor. Also, there's a lot of "telling" that attempts to catch readers up to the original story.

But it's hard not to like Eva and Zoe and to root for them. And for that reason, I'll rate this a 4.

Eva Mueller and Zoe Lambros immigrate from Greece to Australia after the war and after initial months in the Sydney Migrant Camp, they find and apartment. Eva is well educated speaking 4 languages but receives no job offers until she is hired packing biscuits at Johnson Brothers Biscuit Factory, the job offer meant to be demeaning because she is German. Zoe arranges counselling for Eva to help her recover from mistreatment by her Nazi step father who suddenly is in Sydney searching for her. At the same time, the Nazi War Crimes commission is trying to find him for the Nurenberg Trials. An interesting read, although it is a bit repetitive and drags at times.

And it continues...

A wonderful follow up to a wonderful book. Eva and Zoe are perhaps the best couple I have come across in awhile. The level of love and commitment they have for each other is so refreshing. No agnst, no jealousy, no misunderstandings, just love and trust. They stand together in everything. Eva's past is horrific and the way she battles through that is truly inspiring. Zoe is beside her every step of the way, doing whatever she has to do. Another book in this series that I highly recommend. On to the next one.

I enjoyed this continuation of the story and the growth each character had made. There were some drawn out points that were a little silly but overall to have a happy ending in a lesbian focused story is wonderful. Also the historical fiction points tie in well and it makes the reader wonder "how many other war criminals got away? How many other people were truly harmed even if not in concentration camps?"

Intense historical story

I did not read the first in this series and after reading this one, not sure I could. Especially if the story describes what Eva was put through.

But I did not need to read that one for this one. Very glad I read this one. I may read the others in the series, not sure yet. But if you want an intense and historical story, read this.

I have to say that this one kept me on the edge of my seat. I just knew there was an impending doom scenario at play, just didn't know when it was going to hit! I'm thoroughly enjoying getting to know these characters.

Interesting

This is not the type of book I normally read and I started to not finish the book, but I did. I don't read love stories. I do like to read about world war two and the crap the Nazis were doing.

Milk & Honey – A review of the novel ‘Where Shadows Linger’

“Love is an act of endless forgiveness; a tender look which becomes a habit.” - Peter Ustinov

Author Mary D. Brooks’s novel ‘Where Shadows Linger’ is the second book in the Intertwined Souls series of books. It’s a continuation of Eva & Zoe’s adventures in Australia leaving the turmoil of the Second World War behind. Although this new land offers them many opportunities to follow their dreams, they face numerous challenges while setting up a new life and identity together. And when unwanted elements from their past shows up at their doorstep, they will have to rely on old and new friends to overcome them.

Often when you pick up a book from a long fictional series, you expect to see a ‘recap’ or ‘the story so far’ in each sequel. These are not without any merit because they are helpful to a first-time reader catch up with the story. But for a ‘follower’ of the series, such flashbacks often offer a quick nostalgic trip and soon turns into annoyance over re-reading the same parts. But thankfully this is quite tolerable in the case of ‘Where Shadows Linger’ and it’s something new and even returning readers will appreciate.

If it was the serene and yet troubled countryside of Larissa, Greece that we got to explore last time, this time it’s Sydney, Australia where all the action takes place. An interesting aspect of the narrative is the continuing racist and homophobic prejudices our characters undergo in spite of a change in scenery. The author seems to suggest that prejudices are prevalent in both seemingly illiterate and backward countryside as well as in a modern and metropolitan city. It just goes to show that bad seeds can sprout and bloom in every culture and it isn’t area or race specific.

If the first book was about two characters getting to know each other and slowly falling in love. This time around considerable time has been spent in establishing the couple’s lifestyle and exploring their day to day life moments to establish the characters as ones rooted in reality. You can easily identify with their dreams and struggles and life in the post war era. But sometimes you will feel if all this could have been established in a slightly more condensed manner.

Eva and Zoe continue to shine and rarely breaks character even when they are dealing with emotions as diverse as facing death threats to making love to each other. A few interesting and new characters join the cast and we also see the return of a couple of favorites from the first book. Mary’s precise and unique voice for each character ensures that you identify with each of them and yet see them as part of this big diverse family.

Wonderful writing and great characters make this a great follow-up novel to ‘In The Blood Of The Greeks’.

Where Shadows Linger (Intertwined Soul Series Book 2) -- Mary D. Brooks (66+ chapters)

OK. I had started this review as I had started reading the book. And my first thoughts were this: meh.

This was not as strong a book was the first one. There was too much of an emphasis on the loving and not the substances of a real plot here. It was like giving “fans” what was thought they wanted, without giving fans what they really wanted. I got tired quickly of this pandering. I really wanted this book to continue the flow of the strongly started and much liked first book. (In fact, I gave that first book three stars; this book was so bad it made it look like a high four star book.)

And where I was OK with the age difference in the first book between Zoe and Eva, it bothered me tons in this book. And really…the plot took me far too long to get involved. I was almost ready to give this up, and speed read to the end. It was two stars; I was sure of that. And then, chapter 29 happened.

This is where the second book should have started. There is no way I should have had to have read through nearly 28 chapters of bland, unexciting plot to get to the good stuff. No way.

Going forward from chapter 28/29, was a very strongly written book. Still too much loving, and the two stories presented there were very formulaic. (I knew pretty much immediately how they were going to turn out.) However, it was much better written and clearer what the purpose was.

There were other issues in the rest of the book however that again gave it a lower rating. These issues included: inconsistent plot line and timeline; age inconsistencies (first mentioned as one age, then a few pages later, the character was like two years older,) sentence structure made meanings sometimes unclear.

It was very difficult for me to stay on task reading this book, at least until chapter 29. It took way too long to get to that point, and though it improved exponentially after that chapter, it was a slog-fest at times.

The author would have been wise to have started somewhere around chapter 29, and edited out everything that wasn’t specifically connected with the story. I was reading stuff that really had no business being in the plot at all. For that, I am disappointed. I really hope the remaining books improve; I’m keeping an open mind…but I’m not as hopeful as I once was.

Chapters 1-27: two stars.
Chapters 28-66 (epilogue was not needed): high three stars.

Evens out to: low to middle three stars. Two stars and a half, if I’m brutally honest.

I was given a free copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.

This is the second in Brooks’ Intertwined Souls series. The two main characters, Zoe and Eva, are still in this book, but it’s now 1947 and they’ve made it to the Land of Milk and Honey, Australia. As with books set in Massachusetts or Maine, USA, I’m also a sucker for books set in Australia or New Zealand, so I was very excited to read it for that reason as well.

It’s the story of Zoe and Eva getting settled in, finding what they want to do with the rest of their lives when before they didn’t think they had a future, and it’s about them living those lives as best they can in a hard environment (for Greeks, Germans, and Lesbians).

The plot was awesome, with twists, turns, and all sorts of surprises, but it was just the plot. My favorite part of the book were the characters. We got to meet some new ones (like Earl and Elena, I loved their stories, and David, I’m interested to know more about him maybe), and see some familiar faces, like Henry (I literally yelped, saying ‘yay’, when I saw his name), and we also get to see some surprising characters return (won’t spoil it) that I definitely didn’t expect to see.

In a lot of ways I think I liked this book even a little more than the first one. I’m unsure exactly why, but in some ways it resonated just a bit more than In the Blood of the Greeks.

I think what I took out of this novel the most is that Brooks is a good writer (I don’t give five stars easily, all books start at a three for me, if I think it turns out to be amazing then it gets a four, and if it blows my socks off, a five).

I say she’s a good writer for one specific reason regarding this book at least. I kept reading and never put the book down. This was not a short book, and yet I read it through with no interruption. I’ve read many long books in my time, and even when they’re good like Game of Thrones, or Wizard’s First Rule, I still put them down because it’s hard to take in that much fiction and not totally fry your brain. So I’ll read a graphic novel/comic book in between parts or chapters, or a bit of a prose non-fiction book or something. I will say that I considered taking a break with this book too, but, there was some sort of underlying tension or suspense in it that just made it so that I couldn’t put it down. I had to know what was next (and what was next was almost always awesome).

This book was truly fantastic and had my attention from the very first page. I read book 1 and absolutely loved it, so I knew that I would just have to read book 2. I haven't read many lesbian romance series, but this is one of the best books that I have read in a long time. I appreciate the genre and hope to read more from this author. I enjoyed how historical this novel was and how it followed these 2 lovers as they migrated their way through their dreams. Eva and Zoe have survived one of the toughest times in their lives, they made it through the Nazi-filled area of Greece. They feel as though they have accomplished so much already and are looking forward to accomplishing their dreams. These two lovers decide to migrate to Australia in the hopes that they will get the life they always wanted. I felt as though the author did a great job with describing the scenery. I have never been to Australia, but have always wanted to go. The scenery was described in a vivid way and I appreciated the author for making it come alive in my mind. The plot of this story was so romantic and I liked the personalities of both characters. Eva is trying to deal with her past and it is a lot harder to deal with than she originally thought it would be. Zoe starts to live out her dreams and do what she always wanted. I liked seeing how intertwined Eva and Zoe were, it really helped me to get even more into the romance of this story. While Zoe and Eva love each other, they face a lot of prejudice. It's hard for them to deal with and they want to still stay together. This book was passionate, had a lot of energy and pulled me in from the very beginning. This is one that I would recommend reading and I hope to read more from this author!

This is the story of Eva and Zoe, situated in Australia in aftermath of WW2.

Eva is a German, victim of terrible diversion therapy performed by his stepfather's brother. And the reason for this therapy was her sexual orientation, because nothing could disgust and make her Nazi stepfather more angry than Eva being a lesbian. And rather than letting her go or disowning her, he keeps punishing her and making her life hell, especially after her mother dies.

Zoe is a Greek, first hired to help Eva when her stepfather as a high rank army officer was assigned to Greece. Eva's stepfather was responsible for killing Zoe's parents and to revenge, Zoe was determined to kill Eva. But she didn't. Instead she fell in love with her.

This book is a beautiful love story and authentic portrait of F/F relationship in late 1940's. Mary D. Brooks has written strong characters, independent females that are determined to be together and overcome all the obstacles that life throws at them. And despite the horrors of their past, they are very hopeful of the future and what may come. Beautiful story and characters in every sense.

Where Shadows Linger can be read as stand-alone. So no worries if you haven't read the first one in the series.

I enjoyed this book very much

I love historical lesbian stories. This one in particular was insightful from a worldview. I read this without reading the first one and it defiantly made me want to read the first and the rest in the series. I am really curious about the rest of Zoe and Eva's story.
