This was a story about the healing of the hearts of Duncan, Patrick and his little sister Wendy. Duncan has just came out of a bad break-up that has left him depressed with no hope for the future he was so close to having. Patrick and his younger sister Wendy are still trying to heal and deal with the death of their parents and all the changes in their lives that has come since their passing.

Loss of any parent is hard, but to have them go at the same time is truly tragic. I loved Patrick from the very first moment he shows up. He's cute, relentless, brave, and very grown up for his 21 years of age. After the death of his parents, Patrick was left with no choice but to drop out of college to get a full time job to take care of his sister, Wendy. Patrick, I believe, had a lot to handle all at once. The loss of his parents, dropping out of college, having to find a job, the break-up of his then boyfriend, and more importantly, taking full responsibility for his little sister. Wendy has some guilt from all the changes that has taken place within her brothers life. She blames herself for her brothers break-up and is determined to find him a new boyfriend. But when she meets Duncan and sees that Patrick is interested she is against it. She doesn't believe Duncan is cute enough and is too old for her brother. She is a very bossy little thing and very protective of her big brother. I absolutely loved her. She has zero filter and says whatever she's feeling. Even though she doesn't think Duncan is well suited for her brother she allows them to be friends and she includes herself in being Duncan's friend as well. As the story flows on, Wendy grows to love Duncan and therefore changes her mind and tries to force Duncan and Patrick together. Like any bossy little girl she demands them to be together LOL. She is probably my favorite character in this book.
The relationship between Duncan and Patrick was a sweet one. I loved the progress of their relationship. I loved how they were with Wendy. I even got a bit teary eyed there at the end. This is definitely a story I would visit again in the future.

3 OK stars (I liked it, but it was bordering on so-so)

Normally I would be appreciative of a longer length m/m but to be truthful I started to just get really annoyed with Duncan, and slightly bored. So much so that I began to read slowly - and you know it's a bad sign when Candy Crush Saga on your phone becomes more interesting than your kindle (I'm not an addict like some out there so this was not typical).

I found Patrick very sweet - almost too much so. I think he might have been a bit more interesting with the occasional hint of resentment for his lot in life or some stronger insecurity about Duncan's eventual succumbing. Wendy on the other hand was great, best character in the book. Duncan needed to get his head out of his ass - if I were his friend Stacy I'd have gotten physical. The man needed a slap upside the head sooo bad. Also the sex scenes were just OK. Not fantastic, not awful, just average. The vacillation in Patrick and Duncan's relationship was the books plot, hence why it became repetitive and boring. I think it could have benefited from being resolved sooner and then perhaps switching to the relationship being established more firmly - maybe some outside input on the age factors to cause friction?

Not to say that this wasn't a nice read because it was, just that it was a bit too nice for a bit too long.

I would have rated this higher but I hated Duncan's wishy washy behavior. I ADORED Patrick (and Wendy grew on me). I do think that Wendy was supposed to be 9, but she acted like a teenager, but then there were times when she acted 9. Did I mention I loved Patrick?! In the end, I enjoyed this :)

JAILBAIT! HA!

Heartwarming

Such a beautiful and emotional story. My lord this gripped my heart so much. Wendy is such an amazing young girl and the boys equally so. A must read.

This turned out to be a bit of a conundrum.

The writing needs a lot of maturing and refining. A lot. The phrasing and sentence structure are so simple it almost hurts (especially in the narrative) – yet the dialogue is frequently cute, fun and even poignant, despite the lack of polish.

In some ways (particularly in tone) this felt very much like a kiddie book, a circumstance that taints the sexual references somewhat, at least at first. Later on either I got used to the style or the sexual aspects just matched the emotional connection of the guys. Not that this is super steamy. I mean, explicit, yeah. Just not your usual type of sexy.

Either way, this book is a lot better than it appears to be.

I mean, I was irritated with Duncan for quite a while for being so wishy-washy about things with Patrick, and I freely admit that it would have been easy to resent Patrick’s pushiness (much easier, actually, had I known at the time he’d turn out to be so toppy). But then I realized that they in fact made sense as people. It’s strange because it took me a while to see this underneath the veneer of simplistic sentence structures and over-explanatory statements (in the description rather than general repetitiveness or character preachiness, thank god).

Even the side characters were cool in their own ways. Although I am still mystified by the fact that almost (?) every single guy appearing in this story is gay (and everyone assumes this without any clear hints towards that fact).

Wendy, who is clearly more than a side character here, does not fall victim to the plot device puppet syndrome as do so many of kids in fiction. I gather the author tends to go for stories about creating a family around a child or two and that seems like a solid choice, since the one here definitely comes across as quirky and opinionated in the manner I remember from my own childhood.

On the other hand, there’s also the rather large issue of the narrative jumping backwards upon most viewpoint shifts, usually detailing again what we just read but from the other angle – and not in the usual way (i.e. considerably more than just a few seconds or a minute, and in action rather than reference). It makes especially things like sex scenes or emotionally intense scenes feel like they loop backwards and thereby breaks the tension.

And yet? I stand by what I said. This story is a lot better than it presents itself. It’s true that it wasn’t the most exciting thing, and seemed to drag on for a while, and it’s super-happy-mushy-perfect in its message and outcome, and I strongly recommend taking a break with something else after reading anything by this author – but I finished this full of happiness and smiling all over my face.

Lovely story. I liked all the characters in this one, especially Wendy. She is one spunky girl. Duncan has had his heart broken and is understandably leery of starting another relationship. He seems to have placed the entire blame on the previous boyfriend's age instead of on the fact that he was a user and a cheat. Duncan has a lot of heartache to deal with and resists Patrick's dogged pursuit. At least when he isn't looking at him or hearing him or imagining him. Patrick was so persistent that it elevated his appeal. He wasn't going to let Duncan's past determine their future. His unrelenting pursuit of Duncan makes me smile. He knows that in the end Duncan will be his and all will be right. Patrick's little sister makes me laugh. She is quite the little spit fire. The ending is super sweet.

Perfect how older guy Duncan with a broken heart meets his new hot neighbor Patrick and his ornery sister. My only complaint is that in the beginning of the book I thought the sister was much older than 9, so throughout the book that kept throwing me off. Sometimes she would act and say things like a normal 9 year old girl would, and other times I kept picturing her as 17 or 18, so it was awkward. Duncan and Patrick were awesome together and I loved the happy ending.

I thought it was sweet, fluffy entertaining read, not a lot of angst between Patrick and Duncan the MC's. Enjoyable light read--Wendy the character, the little sister, made the ratings from 2 -3; this would take you down from a gut wrenching read....

I just kind of adore Solet's gay-dad-meets-perfect-boyfriend books. Low on drama, high on sincerity, with kids who are genuine participants in the forming of a family. It made me feel good.
