When God Says "Go": Rising to Challenge and Change Without Losing Your Confidence, Your Courage, or Your Cool

Rate this book
Go. One small word...so much power.

When God says, “Go,” we face one of life's greatest decisions. When God says, “Go,” we must face our fears...our excuses...and our selves. When God says, “Go,” it's time to answer his call wherever it leads. When God says, “Go," what will you do?

Author Elizabeth Laing Thompson invites you to walk alongside people of the Bible who were called by God to fulfill his purposes...people like Moses, Rebekah, Abigail, Jeremiah, Mary, and others. These Bible heroes responded much like we do - with a jumbled-up inner storm of excitement and fear, insecurity, and hope. Their stories and struggles will provide a roadmap for your own story, helping you face your very own doubts, regrets, and worries. When God calls, it’s time to go. Maybe somewhere new, someplace you've never been. Maybe it’s time to go forward after being stuck with one foot in the past. Maybe it’s time to go deeper - in Bible study or relationships. Time to go higher - in prayer or dreams. Time to go and give - to use talents and opportunities God has given you. Or maybe it’s time to go and grow, right where you are...to dig into the word, dive into your heart, and become the woman God is calling you to be.

Ready or not, God is calling us all to go somewhere new in our walk with him. So what are we waiting for? Let’s answer his call. Let’s get started!

“When God Says Go” is tellingly subtitled “Rising to challenge and change without losing your confidence, your courage, or your cool”. This clever alliteration gives an indication of the story within, because although this is a work of nonfiction, it reads more like a collection of personal accounts, threaded together to form a manifesto of sorts about facing and conquering life changes. The truth of the matter is, few of us welcome change, yet we all find ourselves having to deal with it throughout our lives. We like to be in control, and so often when God beckons us to a task, we balk due to fear and uncertainty. Thompson points out a profound truth here, however: “God’s call wasn’t about the people he called—God’s call was about Him. It was and is and ever will be about Him…When we live our life devoted to fulfilling God’s purposes, we stop worrying about ourselves: our success, our reputation, our appearance. We lose ourselves in Him. In His purpose. In His call.”

Building upon this insightful realization, each chapter is about a calling. Ten Biblical characters’ stories are highlighted among twelve chapters, after which a relevant explication in a modern setting ties the past and present together, followed by a corresponding example from the author’s life. Each chapter ends with a “Let’s Go Deeper” section, which includes a Bible reference for further study, a journal prompt, and a prayer prompt in the form of a Bible verse. This thoughtful organization and conversational tone draws readers in and makes “When God Says Go” a wonderful resource for either individual or group study. No matter how great or seemingly small our own calling may be, this book reminds us that we are more than conquerors through Him who loved—and still loves—us.

'When God says go, faith says yes, but fear says no.' But when God says go, it's not about you..it's about Him. '

This book is all about doing what God says do even when you feel you can't. Because God believes in you! You'll walk alongside the folks of the Bible who didn't think they could go when God said go. People such as Jeremiah, Moses, Esther, Abigail, Jeremiah and Mary Magdalene. Also many others.

When God says go to you will you sit back and make excuses, or will you go, believing God is enough and it really IS all about Him?

Great book for a Bible study. Each chapter is just the right length. It would work well in personal devotions also. The author is well studied on these examples and she also has a wit that will bring a smile to your face as you realize that God is not looking for perfect people. Just people who are willing to be obedient.

It was not what I expected from the title, but it was so much better! I liked that she addressed so many different ways God says Go.

My Review:

There are so many prayers that will go unanswered in life. We walk around many times wondering why and being completely mystified as to how we will ever function in this life based on the fact that a certain prayer goes unanswered. Many times we experience people or situations that seem they will never end and it is learned after the fact that, that God is in teaching mode. Some of us if not most just wish that there was a neon sign pointing to the way we should go--but many times its just not that simple. When this is the case, it will be through agonizing pain that we will have to grow through the experience. That's right! Grow! That is what is all about "growth."

The author takes lessons learned and combines it with Biblical truths that are evident in these growth experiences. Based on different Biblical accounts, the author leads us through the encouragement and enlightenment that we all need in order to survive those in between times that make us feel isolated and alone, and above all make us feel the furthest from God.

I give this book 3.5 stars

I was able to receive a free e-copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. 🙂 I am very thankful to have been approved for this book.

I enjoyed this book and thought it was full of great things. I also enjoyed the author’s sense of humor and her adding a few of her own experiences. To me it makes a book more relatable when personal experiences are involved. It also helps to see how others relate or handle things.

I loved the use of scripture throughout the book, because it’s nice to be able to grab my Bible and flip to some of the things she mentions and just read up more or highlight that verse. She also includes journal prompts at the end of each chapter which is always fun/nice because it truly helps you when you sit there and reflect on what you read. I love when books include journal prompts or prayer prompts which she had both.

I thought she did a really good job with writing this book and also including stories from the Bible. Each chapter would start with a story from the Bible told in her words to make it a little simpler and easier to understand and then she would use that story to get her point across and convey a message. It’s really awesome that she did that because it helps to see it from a Biblical standpoint and then to see it from a “normal person’s” standpoint.

I didn’t feel like I connected with this book as much as I was hoping…I was hoping I would be able to connect more, but I still felt a little lost at times. I feel like some things were left a little too open for me at least. That’s just my opinion because for someone else this book might have been everything and helped them, but for me I was left wondering a little. I say I was left wondering mainly because I would like things to be a little more clear-cut, because that’s just how I am. So, I’m not blaming the author at all.

The author did a great job with this book and with her writing, I loved her own personal stories and I loved how she managed to make everything works and flow so beautifully. This book just didn’t clear things up for me like I wanted it too. However, that’s the whole point of learning and working on ourselves so I really appreciate this book and I did enjoy it. Maybe, it would have helped me more at a different time.

Overall I recommend this book to any Christians that are feeling lost right now or in search of some help when it comes to understanding what God wants for us and how he wasn’t us to approach it. This book has some really good stuff in it so definitely give it a read.

When God Says "Go" by Elizabeth Laing Thompson is a wonderfully inspirational book that encourages readers to grow in their faith, to grow in their relationship with a God who gives us what we need, when we need it. With wit and humor, the author has crafted an easy to read book that is infused with truths from God's Word. Using ten individuals from the Bible, the author tells their story in a conversational manner to convey a different concept from each one. From Moses we are reminded that God is always calling--how will we answer His call. From Mary Magdelene readers are encouraged to not let a shameful past destroy our present joy. From Peter we learn that there is a time to go all in when Jesus says, 'come' and that even though we might fail cataclysmically, God still has a plan and we can trust Him to fulfill it. At the end of each chapter is Let's Go Deeper section with suggestions for Further Study, Journal and Prayer Prompts. I liked this book as it is a wonderful reminder that as God has called me to surrender to His will, He is with me always, and He is the answer. The pressure is off of me to perform because whatever the situation is, it is about Him and He is able. When God Says "Go" is an insightful devotional for personal use or for gift-giving.

I have read and loved another book by this author and started reading this with the same hope. I really liked it and the lessons learnt within its's pages but I didn't love it.
The book is twelve chapters referencing ten bible characters using their stories or parts of their stories to guide us through. Moses, Jeremiah, Mary Magdalene, Peter (x2). Mary Mother of Jesus (x2), Esther, Samuel, Jonathan, Legion and Abigail. You may be thinking how were some of these people called to go but after reading this book I can see the different ways that calls us to "go". It's not always what we think or want, The book uses "retellings" of bible events, fleshing out the stories, to teach us and encourage us.
For the most part I did not mind but a few I felt to too great of a creative licence that did not line up with the character. Legion for example was the name of the demon not the man. I get that his name is not given in the bible but I just felt it wrong to go the chapter using that as his name. I also had an issue with Mary part 2.
Each chapter ends with a "Let's Go Deeper" section with "For Further Study" scriptures, "Journal Prompt" questions and "Prayer Prompt" to end using scripture to guide the prayer.
I can recommend this with caution, it was a good book that asks some good heart questions.
I received this book free from NetGalley and Barbour Publishing for my honest opinion

Using her creative writing talents, Elizabeth Laing Thompson focuses on Bible characters that were called by God to “go” and be obedient to His call to each of them. This book is an intriguing mix of humor, drama, and inspiration. As the author applies each story to our daily lives, you’ll find yourself challenged and encouraged.

Just one note: Ms. Thompson does use her “creative imagination” in these stories, but stays true to the Biblical accounts. I liked it. I found that it made for interesting reading, but if this is not your preference, you might want to take a look at this book before you purchase it.

This would be a good book to use as a weekly devotional book or Bible study.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher for review. I was not required to give a positive review. This is my honest opinion about this book.

Elizabeth Laing Thompson has written a wonderful devotional/self help book called When God Says Go to help us to learn how to accept God’s challenges. Focusing on ten Biblical characters (Moses, Jeremiah, Mary Magdalene, Mary the Mother of Jesus, Peter, Esther, Jonathan, Legion, Abigail, and Samuel) that followed God’s leading, we learn how to relate our life to them. In each individual chapter the author shares the scripture that supports the Bible story also lists additional scriptures pertinent to that particular person. She finishes up the devotion with a journal and prayer prompt.

When God Says go is a wonderful devotional for those times in your life when God is calling you to "change" and you don't know exactly what the next step is. It offers encouragement, support and biblical examples of times in the past when God has asked people to do specific things and what happens when they choose to obey. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was helpful and encouraging during my own time of "God saying go".

Absolutely excellent book!

Elizabeth Laing Thompson is a gifted writer. She shares candidly about her own life and it's ups and downs with humor, wit and love. Her work is bathed in appropriately applied scripture. Each chapter gives opportunity for further growth and the scriptural references to dig deeper as well as some pointed questions for journaling.

I would recommend this book to anyone at any stage in their life's journey.

Thank you, Ms. Thompson, for the excellent, inspiring, encouraging, soul-searching, read!

Oh, my goodness. Based on the two books I've read by Elizabeth Laing Thompson, I think we'd be great friends. Similar to "When God Says Wait", each chapter within this book starts with a fictional look at a familiar Bible story. Then Elizabeth digs in with tenderness, care, and great truth. She doesn't shy away from either the hard stuff or the time she chose poorly, but she also faithfully offers hope and encouragement. She also opens doors I hadn't considered on what it means to "Go", broadening the concept while challenging readers to obey.

This book dives into the lives of Biblical characters while diving into your heart. I love the combination of scripture, stories, and great practical insight about what to do when God calls. I felt like I was sitting down to coffee with the author: sharing life, laughter, and tears together. Elizabeth has a way of convicting you with gentleness, and since she shares vulnerably from her own life, you feel safe hearing the urges of God being spoken through her. I am grateful for this book!

‘Go!’ It’s a very scary word and sometimes when God asks it of us we freeze up. In ‘When God Says Go’, Elizabeth digs deep and addresses some of every woman’s greatest fears and vulnerabilities with humor and grace. This book is definitely not a light read as it requires great thought in every chapter. So, if you’re looking for something that’ll change your Christian walk for the better, you’ll find it in WGSG as well as its predecessor ‘When God Says Wait.’

"God's call isn't about our age, our experience, our qualifications, our giftedness, our skill set, our appearances, our intelligence, our connections....". This is the common clarion call that Christians get throughout their lives to participate in various forms of ministry. However, their main challenge is reconciling one's heart, mind and actions. Elizabeth L. Thompson understands these inner struggles and attempts to help her readers take down the various inner barriers that prevent them from "making the jump".

Elizabeth injects her own creativity to bring to life several characters and the possible ways that they might have reacted when they got their own direct and indirect calls to fulfil their missions despite their perceived inadequacies. Readers will immediately imagine Moses at the burning bush or Mary having the talk with Joseph about her extraordinary pregnancy.

She does not give the wrong impressions that readers should take up all the opportunities that come their way. This might involve looking for ministry opportunities in one's backyard:

"Right now God may not be calling you to move to a new city or seek a new job or assume a new role. God always wants us to move forward but that forward motion often happens fight where we are, in the life we already have, among people we already know. Sometimes God tells us to go and stay: Stay home, Go back to an old place with a new attitude. Show His grace to our family. Share His love with our neighbours. Go deep. Love hard. Grow strong. Serving God isn't always loud and dramatic and full of transition, most of the time it's quiet. It's humble. It's simple. And it's hard work."

At the end of every chapter, she provides questions and resources for readers to reflect, meditate and journal as they reflect on various decisions that may be weighing on their minds. When God says "Go" will be a good book to use a chapter per day devotional because there is much to ruminate on.

"When God Says 'Go'" is about how to adapt when God challenges us to leave our comfort zone and embark on a journey of growth.  It may involve leaving our physical location or it may just involve leaving old attitudes and ideas behind and embracing the change that follows.

Elizabeth Laing Thompson employs literary license to create stories around biblical characters to help us better understand or maybe imagine how they felt when they received God's call and how to apply their stories to our own call.

What is extremely interesting to me is that she didn't just use Moses and Samuel; she also tells the stories of Legion (the man with many demons), Abigail and Jonathan.  Jonathan's story was my favorite as she discusses a call that was not so glamorous, but Jonathan took hold of it anyway.

Thompson also includes personal stories and the stories shared by others to complete each chapter. The "Let's go deeper..." section at the end of each chapter help to solidify the wisdom learned.

Elizabeth Laing Thompson has written a book that is both a devotional and a "how-to" book on how to best accept God's challenges. She focuses on ten people from the Bible who followed God's advice to "Go" and she helps us relate to their Bible stories by adding how she thinks they reacted before they agreed to the changes that He was suggesting. Some of them are very familiar characters: Moses, Jeremiah, Mary Magdalene, Mary the Mother of Jesus, Peter, Esther and Samuel but Thompson also features the lesser known stories of Jonathan, Legion, and Abigail. In each individual chapter the author shares the scripture that supports the Bible story and she also lists other scriptures pertinent to that particular person. I especially like that she then concludes each chapter with a Journal Prompt and a Prayer Prompt to help deepen our understanding.

I believe that Elizabeth Laing Thompson listened to and responded to a special voice when she wrote "When God Says Go". She was prompted, she obeyed and this book is the result. I recommend it to anyone who wants to better understand the challenges that God is presenting and then be brave enough to say Yes to the changes!

When God Says Go, written by Elizabeth Laing Thompson, is a book dealing with women's issues and spiritual growth. The author tells the story of people in the Bible who were called by God to do His will, to help the reader to choose to “go” when God calls. The books has 12 chapters that consist of a stories of people in the Bible such as Moses, Mary Magdalene, Esther, Samuel, Peter and Mary the mother of Jesus. The author also uses personal experiences and Bible verses. Each chapter ends with a discussion session, “Let's go deeper”, which include reading recommendations for further study as well as items for consider for journaling and prayer.
This would be a great book for a Bible Study or discussion group. I like how the author tells the story of the people from the Bible and with their reactions to being called to do God's work. The things that stands out the most for me in this book is that when God calls us, it is not about us, it is about God. When He calls us, He wants our all. Another thing that stands out for me is that we do not get to choose when changes will come into our lives, but we do get to choose how we respond.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was easy to read. The author is inspiring and challenging as she shares the stories of people in the Bible that were used by God yet they had their own struggles with going also. When God tells us to go we have to remember that he never said we have to go alone. As she shares these stories she reminds us that we need to lay down the fears that are standing if the way of walking out our calling. So many of us think we are so unworthy to walk out something God has called us to do and the author does a great job at helping you see the truth and lay down the lies that the enemy has placed on you that keep you bound. At the end of each chapter she has a section that is called "Let's Go Deeper" which is very good and makes us think through thoughts or feelings that are keeping us down and then she ends with a prayer. The author also provides practical advice that will help you as you decide to follow "When God Says GO" I highly recommend this book to anyone who is struggling in this area. I received an advanced copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.

What do you say when God says go? Unfortunately, many of us probably stutter, stammer, and think of a gazillion excuses why we shouldn't or can't do what God is asking of us. Elizabeth Laing Thompson helps take the guesswork out of obeying that still small voice with her book, "When God Says Go". Using stories from the scriptures, Ms. Thompson relates the struggles of Biblical characters we're all familiar with to modern day problems and circumstances. In her unique voice that feels much like she is sitting across the table with a cup of tea, Ms. Thompson shows us how Moses, Mary, Jeremiah, Rebekah, Peter and many others all eventually said 'Yes' when God told them to go. They didn't go without excuses, doubts, or hearts full of fear, but 'go' they did. This book will help you find the courage for that frightening first step and learn to live out your faith in the face of what may seem like overwhelming odds. It will also make a great resource to turn to time and again when you feel God calling you out of your comfort zone.

I appreciate Elizabeth Laing Thompson’s honesty in ‘When God Says go’, sharing her experiences and encouraging the reader to let go and let God. Her insights are refreshing and uplifting, but also challenging. As I read each chapter, I enjoyed the examples of Biblical people who were used to help us continue to move forward in our faith in following our Savior. I was reminded of the verse in 2 Timothy 3:16 and 17 “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

As I began reading the book, I thought I would pick a favorite chapter but soon realized that it was impossible to do so, as each Biblical person has a lesson to share. You will meet Old and New Testament people that God used in spite of their human faults.

First I have to say what a beautifully made book this is. The beautiful blue color and hardback cover are top quality. The outside is lovely but the inside is even better!
On the left side of each page is a bible verse with lots of room below to write my thoughts. On the right page is a short devotional thought to think about I found it helpful especially on days when I needed nudging. Below the devotional is a question to ponder, then plenty of space to write my thoughts.
How many times have I wanted to serve God in some new way for me and I was afraid to take the first step! How many times have I thought I'm not gifted enough, smart enough, or strong enough to help someone else! This devotional book is a wonderful way to show someone you care,a keepsake, a nice gift for someone else or yourself!

When God Says Go Is a Very Challenging Book
“When God Says Go” by Elizabeth Laing Thompson is a book to challenge our walk with God as she makes the people of the Bible come alive. Also she gives examples of calls He makes in our world today. His call to “go” is not always to cross an ocean but to just get on with being what He calls us to do daily. I consider it a book that I will want to read again and think that it would be a good study book for a ladies group. There are twelve chapters. Each chapter ends with “Let’s Go Deeper…” with ideas for further study, journal prompt and prayer prompt. Some of the Bible personalities looked at are Moses, Jeremiah, Mary, Esther, Legion. Elizabeth Laing Thompson’s When God Says Go is the sequel to her previous book, last year’s When God Says ‘Wait’. Even though I found things that were worthy of appraisal in the other book, I probably wouldn’t have gone out and found this new book on my own on NetGalley. The publisher wound up contacting me with this book (maybe as part of a conversion attempt, as I was only lukewarm on the previous tome), and I decided … eh, why not? And so the now-completed book is closed on my Kindle. While it’s ironic that I have read both books at exactly the point in my life when I needed them, I found When God Says Go to be a disappointing follow-up that lacks the focus of its predecessor. Ideas are haphazardly strung all over the place, and in the end I’m not sure I fully understood what I read. Reading it was a bit of a chore — notwithstanding the fact this is a book for evangelicals, and I’m not one.

You can tell that When God Says Go was rushed just by looking at the publication dates between the two books. One was published in March 2017, with the follow-up coming just a little more than a year later. Rather than refining the prose and taking into account any criticisms of the first book, those problems have become increasingly magnified in the second. For instance, each of the 12 chapters again open with a retelling of a Bible story as told using modern-day slang and idioms. Again, I suppose this is to make the book seem fresh to new Christians, if not a wee bit literary — though I now wonder if this is the Christian publishing industry’s way of skirting around copyright issues with the publishers of what particular Bible the author is quoting from.

Truth

We've all been there. We hear the voice of God, telling us to go...to do His will in a certain situation. Do we listen, or do we make excuses until someone else steps up and grabs the blessing that we were meant to have?
When God Says Go is a great reminder that it's not about us, it's about Him and His will. Courage to step up doesn't come easy, but it helps to know that God will be there right beside you, guiding your steps and helping you to succeed.
I highly recommend this book to those who need that extra nudge to do the right thing....which includes most everyone, I believe.

'If God has called you to do something for Him, you can have every confidence that He is with you and will provide what you lack'. One of the first statements in this book that made me stop and really consider why, when God says go, I always find excuses. A very well written, easy to read, devotional style book encouraging one to really believe that God is with you. My insecurities and feelings of inability shrink with the knowledge that God CAN! I need only to be ready to go and do wherever He has planned.

When you hear God saying, "go," what do you do? Hide? Say, "I'm not qualified," or, " surely someone else can do it better." Do you tremble in fear? Or wonder what in the world God is thinking, choosing you? In this book, we see how some of our favorite Bible Heroes answered the call, and what we can learn from their doubts and fears, and their trust in God to be able to work through them. A great book to read when you are doubting whether you are worthy of God's call. Because, if He calls, He thinks you are. This is a lovely, engaging work. It is personal, but extremely relevant. I love the elaboration that Elizabeth adds to the Bible stories that she includes. She hints at what might have been going on behind the words we are given, enlivening the stories in ways that help us relate to them, suggesting that even our Biblical heroes likely had the same concerns, doubts, and fears that we generally have about being called. She does an excellent job of pointing out that when God says "go", He might mean "stay, and minister where you are - in a way that He has called you, using the gifts that He has given you."
