Multi-award-winning author for over 30 years, Rowena Portch is best known for her Spirian Saga, a nine-book series. In journalism, she has written numerous articles for distinguished publications, such as LiveStrong, Public Slate, Airbrush Magazine, Northwest Travel, and Guardian Liberty Voice. Her spiritual commitment to God is foremost in her life, but her heart belongs to her husband Gregg and guide-dog Skye-Bear. She has earned a Bachelors degree in business management and a Masters in computer sciences. She is only 16 credits shy of earning her Doctorate in natural medicine. Portch worked as a senior technical editor for Microsoft and Osborne/McGraw-Hill. Other professionals see her as an intelligent woman who learns quickly and follows through with commitments. Her true distinction, however, is her drive for learning. Her family and friends call her a perpetual student who hates wearing shoes.

The gang is back. Great story. It is a bit much as far as chauvinism is concerned. Their whole universe is! You have the women who aren’t allowed to learn to defend themselves are ALWAYS in trouble? Yeah, ok.

Author Rowena Portch builds the dramatic tension in what is already an exciting series by introducing several unexpected elements and new characters. Book two, The Union, is a fast paced second offering sure to please readers already hooked by The Protected and the Spirian Series.

A rival clan, the Shadows, have set designs in motion to destroy Khalen and subvert Skye. Hungry for power and blood they cannot allow Skye to become Khalen's mate. Khalen will be pushed to use his powers to take life. Doing so will carry him to the edge of darkness and place everything he has fought for including his soul at risk. The truce between clans has been broken and war is imminent. Spirian elders from around the world are gathering to determine leadership and to negotiate and enforce Spirian law. Is there another of the Protected strong enough to challenge Khalen, one better suited to serve as Skye’s guardian? Are Skye and Khalen destined to be life mates? Can Khalen keep Skye alive long enough to cement their bond by claiming her? Portch keeps you guessing.

The Union is a superb addition to the series but reading book one, The Protected, is a must. I was highly pleased with plot development that introduces depth and complexity to the story. Portch will have you biting your nails trying to guess what secrets and dangers are coming next for Skye, Khalen and the Protected. She never lets up for a second.

Things heat up a bit as Skye and Khalen discover that they are strong against one another and even stronger when they are together. She begins to understand what being a Spirian is all about. He learns to trust again.
