Knowing J.B.'s humour from Twitter and YouTube, I had a feeling this was going to be a bit on the wacky side. You can tell he was having a ball writing it. Well, at least it seemed that way to me, anyhow.
There was some really good ideas going on here, the absurdity, the banter here and there, the main character's thoughts, the punchy humour. Although I wouldn't say it was laugh out loud funny, but it did make me smile from time to time. And I didn't know where it was going either, which is always a good thing.
The ending was a surprise, too. I think it worked well enough. Appreciated the punch. It worked with the overall style.
But it's not high fives all round, because it wasn't without it's faults. This would've benefited greatly with a little more fleshing out, a little more care with the flow of the writing would have just edged it a little more on the stars, too. That's how I felt anyway. But the goods are all there. They are definitely all there. It just falls shy of being something great.
This is also the first of J.B. Taylor's work I've read, and I'm not sure if he writes wacky stuff all the time, but it suits him. And I honestly think he should be going down that route. Maybe he already does. He's got a head for it, that's for sure.
Anyway, I recently read Douglas Hackle's Terror Mannequin, and in some ways, this has a similar vibe, just not quite as polished.
But like I say, it could be. It so could be.
It's a short story. It's on Kindle Unlimited, and it's also only 99p to buy at the moment. A fifteen minute zip through and it gave me a chuckle.
2.5 stars rounded to 3.
Definitely an above average short story.
Could have scored higher.
