Cycle of Dragons #2
The Betrayed Dragon
A chance encounter leads Ashan deeper into the mysteries of the dragons.
As a new student in the Dragon Academy, Ashan wants nothing more than to understand his connection to the dragons and to harness their power, but he might have come to learn of his power too late for him to use it. Attempts to harness the magic that burns within him haven't succeeded, and he's consoled knowing that if nothing else, he can learn to be a dragon rider.
Dragons begin to go missing, the Djarn move toward the kingdom, and Ashan gets caught in a plot he's not trained to handle. When the king's chief dragon mage falls under suspicion, Ashan discovers the key to unraveling the plot against the throne. All Ashan wants is to learn enough to become a dragon mage, but if the Djarn take the dragons, more than that goal will fail. The entire kingdom will fall.

Still feeling it... although I wish the dragons in this somehow find a way to communicate with the main character.

This book is quite a turnaround from the first one, which I've rated 2/5 and barely finished in the first place. There are still things I wish were different (much more action, more detailed worldbuilding, more combat, more interactions with dragons outside of magic), but the concept of magic is brilliant and well written. In fact, this whole book is almost exclusively about the protagonist learning and controlling magic. Good stuff. I am keen to finish the series now.
One thing, though, this story is very closely related to dragons, but it is not about dragons. It is about a human using dragon powers. Dragons are written as a plot device thus far, which is disappointing. The name of this book is inaccurate. Maybe it will improve in the following books.

Ashan is a student, but not a traditional student. His classmates are all younger, sometimes that’s a problem, sometimes it’s an advantage.
In this story the authors take us to school. We learn about life and lessons in the Dragon Academy. Ashan wrestles with learning. Some things are difficult and he needs to take a different tactic. He also learns quite a bit that is outside the curriculum. This learning sets the storyline and guides his response as challenges beyond class work come his way.

Excellent Read
I have always loved Dragon stories and this storyline did not misrepresent. It contained all the magic without all the complicated spells. Additionally, I loved the characterizations which also did not disappoint. I look forward to continuing this series.

3.5 - 4 Stars
The Betrayed Dragon is the second book in The Cycle of Dragons series by Dan Michaelson & D.K. Holmberg. It is an engaging blend of epic fantasy, coming-of-age adventure, and high-stakes magic. We enter a world where dragons are not just mythical beasts but deeply woven into the fate of kingdoms and the growth of the MC.
From the first book, we are drawn into Ashan’s journey from an inexperienced student to someone with immense potential. The author balances action-packed battles with quieter moments of introspection.
The pacing is brisk, with each installment building on the last, raising both the emotional and political stakes.
Here, the magic system really shone – where the connection between dragon mages and their dragons felt both mystical and yet still grounded, which made the stakes of each magical encounter more believable. The dragons themselves are more than just weapons of war - they have personalities, histories, and a sense of mystery that kept me turning pages.
An enjoyable binge-read.

The Betrayed Dragon gets 3 stars from me. The book was a good fantasy read with enough action and magic to keep me engaged. The dragon storyline was interesting and helped maintain my interest throughout the novel. However, the protagonist's interactions with his bullies felt a bit awkward and unrealistic at times, which made those scenes less convincing. The characters were generally likable, but some could have benefited from more development. The pacing had a few slow spots, though the story remained enjoyable overall. In the end, it was a solid read, but not one that left a lasting impression on me.

Great original story concept
I really like the concept, and the story is interesting. The writing of it needs some work though. There are many errors, typos, punctuating errors, and in some spots second are repeated in slightly different ways. The impression I get is that the author had a couple different approaches to how to say something, and both were left in when it went to print. Seems the publisher should have polished that up. Perhaps that will improve as the writers gain experience.

Better than the first
Even though I disliked the pacing of the first book in this series, the story itself has potential. So I kept on reading.
Book two still moves at a snail’s pace, however there are more “distractions” to keep one interested as the story develops. I found myself surprisingly intrigued and I even looked forward to unraveling the secrets of certain mysterious characters.
So if you’re wondering…ya, I do plan on testing the waters of book 3. Maybe a slow start isn’t necessarily a bad thing after all.

More *** required!!!
If I could rate this book with more stars I would!! It held my interest from the beginning and as I read my excitement grew and increased with each chapter!! The last few paragraphs of this book hits like the end of a 4th of July fireworks extravaganza!!! I must go immediately go and read the next offering from this magnificent team of authors!! I can't wait!!!

Nice Read!
I enjoyed reading this book! I felt that Ashan was going to get himself into something that he wouldn't be able to get himself out of! Natalie was a person of interest to me for the missing dragons! With everything happening in this book, it leaves me to believe that Ashan will be someone very powerful! I do believe everyone who loves reading about dragons will enjoy this read. I definitely recommend it!

Who did it?
Our protagonist studies at the Academy and does make friends well. He older and slow at connecting with Dragons. Most of the book presented this theme. Why can’t I connect with the dragons as if I don’t ••••• dragon rider, I become. Yes there is a plot afoot but not as well developed. Not sure if I wil read book three. The jury is out on that one.

If you like books about dragons, without a lot of other things taking over (and the interaction with mages) I like it! Not a complicated read. It was fun easy to follow yet engaging. I hated to put it down, always wanted to know, what now? Can't wait to start the next one. A little short, but if you have a reader with a shorter attention span, this is a good thing

Cycle of Dragons
The first book in this series invited me to look forward to more.
This book, the second in the series started much more slowly. While it did get back the energy of the first book, it took much of the story to get going.
I will probably continue on to the next book, but first I am going to take a break and see if I get more interested in something else.

Another good book from this series
Another good book with good character development and backstory about the kingdom and dragons and how they are connected. Also like to see the main characters strain from the norm of everybody else in looking more into what's going on behind the scenes.

Great Story!
This is a great story! Great discriptivness and dialog for each character and setting draws you deeply into each page. The MC shows his youth and doubts, but his morals lead him to do his best and what's right, rather than do nothing. Looking forward to the next book.

Great series
Easy read..i found i couldn’t stop reading. The books could be combined as they are too short as is. However, the story line is smooth and carries with it a path different from like books.

Interesting
Progressing from farmer to schooling to become a dragon mage is an arduous journey only complicated by the fact that someone is trying to take over the kingdom.

Interesting but wordy
I enjoy the story but the writer uses too much when explaining Ashans connection to power. It’s over and over. Could have done with much less of that.

Plenty of surprises
What is more fun than reading a book with surprises you never would guess? The first book was great, but this one is even better. Wow.

Good build up
Now it is getting interesting. A little bit slow at first but it builds up to climax pretty quickly at the later half.

Not for me
The writ I ng in this book os very circular. The same things get stated over and over again. Then contridicted later. Everything just feels repetitive.
