Echo Springs #1

The Fixer Upper: The Echo Springs Series, Book 1

Rate this book
Abby Callier is more in love with Shakespearean heroes than any real man, and she’s beginning to wonder if there is life for her outside the pages of a book. It doesn’t help that her esteemed parents tend to view her as they would one of their science experiments gone wrong. On the eve of finishing her dissertation, she escapes her staid existence to live in the house she inherited from her Great-Aunt Evie in the small town of Echo Springs, Colorado. Because, let’s face it, when a woman starts comparing her life to horror films, it might be time for a break.

Sheriff Nate Barnes believes in law and order and carefully building the life you want. In his spare time, he has been remodeling his house in the hope that one day it will be filled with the family he makes. But Nate doesn’t like drama or complications and tends to avoid them at all costs. And yet, when Miss Abigail Callier, his newest neighbor, beans him with a nine iron, he can’t help but wonder if she might just be the complication he’s been searching for all along. It doesn’t hurt that he’s discovered a journal hidden away by the previous tenant and decides to use Old Man Turner’s advice to romance Abby into his life.

Abby never expected her next-door neighbor, the newly dubbed Sheriff Stud Muffin, to be just the distraction her world needed. The problem is she doesn’t know whether she should make Echo Springs her home or if this town is just a stopover point in her life’s trajectory. And she doesn’t want to tell Nate that she might not be sticking around - even though she should, because it’s the right thing to do, the honest thing - because then all the scintillatingly hot kisses with the sheriff will come to an abrupt halt. Did she mention that he’s a really great kisser?

The Fixer Upper by Maggie Mae Gallagher
4.5 stars
A gorgeous contemporary romance. Rich in descriptive language and content.

The only minus was that Abby wasn’t sure she was staying in Echo Springs and didn’t tell Nate. The friends she made warned her to tell him and it weighed on her conscience but she still didn’t tell him. I don’t like it when their are lies or when problems could be solved by a simple conversation.
Saying this, the conflict and resolution was done well and gave the characters a way to express their true feelings and understand the depth of their choices.

I’m glad this author decided to write more than Urban Fantasy. This novel was moving and lovely.

Excerpt
“Abby didn’t care for how much he had taken up residence in her mind, among other places. She obsessed over him. Their relationship had progressed too quickly. She barely knew him. Which meant the likelihood of her undead doll army rising up to slaughter everyone in the event that she did the horizontal tango with Nate was significantly high. Instead of feeding her desire to see him naked, Abby had decided to avoid temptation altogether, succinctly ducking for cover and dodging any potential interactions with him this past week. Living next door to him made it so much more difficult to eschew interaction. It forced Abby to try and act like a ninja, all stealthy, checking out her windows before she left. The problem was, she didn’t have a stealthy bone in her body. Her ninja skills were hampered by the fact that she moved with all the grace of someone wearing one of those tyrannosaurus rex costumes that had become all the rage lately, and she wiped out more than once. Her knees were bruised from her last fall.
It wasn’t that Abby didn’t want to see him. She did, and that was the problem. Whenever her thoughts drifted in his direction, she would end up fanning herself because the imagery would inevitably turn to scorching hot, pulse-pounding sex. Her id and ego were both on the same page in their desire to boink her sexy neighbor. This left her questioning her decision to avoid him. Why was she studiously avoiding a man she had the hots for and obviously wanted? Nate had certainly made no bones about his interest.”

description This book was a bit of a mixed bag for me. 🙈 There were some parts I loved. 💗 Rufus. 🐶 The ongoing joke about the dolls. 👶 The secondary characters. 👤👤👤👤👤 Both Nate and Abby were likable. 💞 The sex was hot. 🔥 There was no OW or OM drama, and the ending was satisfying (albeit rushed). 👍

description

However, I felt the entire book needed a good edit. 👀 There was way too many repetitive inner thoughts from both Abby and Nate. 😪 The whole side story line with the journal felt forced and unnecessary, and there was too much telling instead of showing. ⬅ These things bogged down the story and made it a slog to get through at times. 👎

That said, I was intrigued by the secondary characters enough to give the next book a chance. 👍

A beguiling, delightful and bewitching tale of romance and new beginnings told with passion and zest.

Following on from her Great Aunt’s Evie’s passing and in a bid to escape her parents controlling ways, hoping to steer her life into a direction of her own choosing, Abby Callier has decided to temporarily relocate to her Great Aunt’s old Victorian house in Echo Springs, Colorado. There, she meets Nate Barnes, a charming and extremely sexy Sheriff and neighbour and they both feel an instant, dynamic attraction to one another. They also both think that their lives currently lack completeness or at least that certain something.

I loved down-to earth, straightforward, though flawed, Abbey who tended to wear her heart on her sleeve. And kind, good-natured and amiable Nate, who was inclined to be more assured, orderly and methodical.

I really appreciated the author, Maggie Mae Gallagher’s easygoing style of writing. With its amusing dialogue there were many hilarious, laugh-out-loud moments, particularly when Nate’s Great Dane, Rufus was around.

The sizzle and desire between Abby and Nate kept things hot and spicy as I swiped through the pages on my e-reader and I finished The Fixer Upper in only a few hours!

A fantastic, sparkling, steamy read which was well worth the time invested and totally deserves my five stars.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel from Great Escapes Book Tours and Maggie Mae Gallagher via Bookfunnel at my own request. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

The Fixer Upper
By: Maggie Mae Gallagher

*REVIEW* 🔨🔨🔨.5
The Fixer Upper is the story of Abby and Nate. After inheriting an old Victorian house in Echo Springs, Colorado, Abby decides to move there to complete her dissertation. Nate is the local sheriff and her neighbor. They share an immediate attraction to each other, and it's not long before they fall into bed. The spark between them is too instant for my taste. No angst or tension is present, and it's all just too easy. The story is quite humorous at times, and there is a charming aspect about the house and the backstory of it. Abby and Nate are engaging and likeable to an extent. The story became repetitive and boring at times because of all the inner monologue happening. The characters are too much in their own heads instead of interacting with each other. It's also a predictable story, but if that doesn't bother you, then you'll likely enjoy this one. Overall, this story is well written and a lovely small town kind of romance. I wanted more from the story, though, and it fell short for me. I'm maybe not the right reader for this, but so many other readers will delight in it. 3.5 stars

This is a contemporary romance and at first, I would have labeled it a cozy. It’s in a small town named Echo Springs. The main character has inherited an old home from her Grand aunt. It has a handsome sheriff who happens to live right next door to Abby, the main character. But there’s no dead body and the sheriff only has to worry about a few break-ins and… it’s much steamier than your everyday cozy. It is definitely a romance.
I am not a fan of the romance genre. It’s just not my thing. However, I don’t mind a little bit of sweet romance in a book. We all fall in love at one time or another. But this just seemed as if Abby loved Nates abs and his neat ass over and over again. Their every look was burning and intense. I got tired of reading it. I really did. To me this seemed to be the plot of the story. Nate’s never been involved with anyone in Echo Springs; not good for his image. Abby really expected this to be a temporary place for her to finish her PhD. These thoughts went on and on and then they were in bed again, explicitly in bed again. There really was not much else to this story.

Humor, passion, drama, and a touch of mystery, The Fixer Upper was a fun read. The chemistry between these two was on fire. I loved the tension and the build between them. The addition of the mystery, while small, created a sense of suspense that I enjoyed. Gallagher sprinkled in a few laughs here and there that put a smile on my face and added a lightness that I appreciated.

Missed moments and lack of communication caused some frustration but it all added to the drama of the story. I enjoyed the character dynamics and look forward to reading more from this series.

Reviewed for Romancing the Readers Blog: http://www.romancingthereaders.com/20...

I'm always on the hunt for new to me authors so when I was going through my email and found this book come up I thought...maybe and moved on. I didn't delete the email, I just left it for later. Throughout the day it came to me and finally I decided to get it.

I'm so glad that I did.

From the minute Abby tried to hit Nate with a golf club I was hooked. These two are perfect for each other even if they didn't know it. I did. I liked how they interacted together. They respected each other and let the romance build.

Both of them have their issues and you see that in some of the ways they are with each other but you can also see that even though they are trying to protect themselves they really care about the other person.

It was nice seeing Abby make friends. It's something she really didn't have in her life and she needs. Come to Echo Springs gives her roots. A place to belong. People to be close to and friends with.

I really liked the people of the town and enjoyed The Fixer Upper enough to want more of Echo Springs. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

We meet Abby as she moves across the country to live in her Aunt's house she inherited as well as get away from her overbearing family. Imagine her surprise when she gets an unannounced visitor on night one accusing her of trespassing. One things are cleared up she finds out the hunky guy is her new neighbor as well as the Sheriff who also happens to own a sweet yet clumsy giant dog who is a real hoot I must say. What follows is a sweet romance that takes it's time as they each have issues to deal with from the past. The work on his house together though making both it and then their fixer upper. Add in a touch of the past through an intriguing journal and it feels that two romance stories for the price of one. Perfect for fans of contemporary romance. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.

DNF. The story just drags too much for me. The writing is too repetitive. The story takes forever to get to the point. The only thing that seems to be between Nate and Abby is lust. There’s practically no thoughts that they have about each other that’s not about sex. I’m tired of reading the same thing every chapter.

This book wasn’t what I expected. It had an interesting start Abby inherited an old house that she plans on redoing while finishing her PHD. Her neighbor is a policeman, who found an old journal, plus the town is having break-ins so everything was there for an interesting story but is went right to a steamy romance novel and that is pretty much all that is written about.

This book was mostly about sex: wanting sex, thinking about sex, talking about sex, being interrupted during sex or actually having sex. Not raunchy graphic porn sex, but close. There were weak story lines included but I would have enjoyed a really deep story about the love between Evie & Bill.

Abby Callier uproots her academic life under academic parents and defies them to write her dissertation on English Literature, instead of something more appropriate, in the small Colorado town outside Denver where her great aunt lived. Tiny Echo Springs is the opposite of everything Abby is used to. She plans on finishing her paper, get her doctorate, and sell her aunt’s house. That’s the plan anyway. But things seldom go according to plan. For one, her aunt’s victorian home is filled with an army of tiny porcelain dolls that leave Abby uneasy. So uneasy, she leaves them in the living room while she sets up camp upstairs, far away from the creepy things. For another, her aunt’s neighbor is beyond hot and also the town’s sheriff. The more time she spends with the man she calls Sheriff Stud Muffin, the more she questions her current objectives and the less sure she is of what her next step will be. She takes a job at the local community college and meets a colorful cast of characters. It’s easy to see where the next books in the Echo Springs series will take us.

Plot
This is a straight-up romance that follows the typical format of meet-cute followed by all the ups and downs you expect in a contemporary romance. There’s a minor subplot involving a series of break-ins in the small town, but the subplot that really shines is Old Man Turner’s journal that tells a romantic tale that started before World War II between Old Man Turner and Abby’s great aunt. It serves as both a parallel tale as well as backstory.

Characters
This was the one part of the story I’m iffy on. Abby’s ovaries “sigh” at the sight of the studly-muffinesque sheriff. And not just once, there is much ovary sighing throughout. And Nate’s declaration that Abby “isn’t like other women” was too cliche. However, the supporting cast saved the story for me. Nate’s bevy of messed-up buddies and punk community college teacher Tessa and her gorgeous, but militant sister, Cybil, drew me in. In fact, if any of these characters are involved in the second book in the series, I’m there!

What I Enjoyed About THE FIXER UPPER
1. Rufus. Nate’s big, lovable, slobbering Great Dane provided some great comedic moments.

2. Tessa. She’s tough, acerbic, and funny. I can’t wait to read her story.

3. Cybil. She’s snark and sour wrapped in a pretty package, and her story is going to be epic.

4. Aunt Evie. The story of her romance with Old Man Turner is heartbreaking and bittersweet.

5. Old Homes. I adore old homes and the descriptions of the two Victorian homes made me want to do a few more renovations around here, much to my husband’s dismay.

Bottom Line
A decent romance with a stellar supporting cast.

Abby inherits her late aunts house and sees living in it and fixing it up as a stop along the way to the life she wants.
Problem is she really doesn't know what she wants.
Her neighbor Nate is the local sheriff. He's renovating his home as well and runs across a diary that has ties to Abby's family. He meets Abby her first night in her aunts house and it's not the meeting most people have!
Their story is a bit sweet, a little funny (the dolls) and pretty sexy. Though at times I wished it would move along a bit quicker.
The Fixer Upper had a great story line I just felt it could do with a little less of the inner dialogue that seemed a bit repetitive.
The characters were good, Rufus was probably my favorite and the end is what I expected.
I wanted to love it but just a bit too much going on in the characters heads.

This book was delightful from start to finish. The story of Abby and Nate is romantic and full of love and friendship, but also witty and hilarious. It's a fun, easy read that explores what's really important in life. I loved the story in the journal that Nate finds and the way it unfolds throughout the book. I loved Abby's character and her sense of humor as well as her loving nature that really shines through her relationship with the dog. The supporting characters were also well-developed with unique personalities that really brought the story to life. I highly recommend this book.

Why 5*?
1 hot, sexy sheriff who knows what he wants and is good with his hands. He loves his dog and friends, and is dedicated to his job.

1 super smart heroine with a whacked sense of humor and an overactive, creepy imagination who has never felt like she's fit in before but finds that home sometimes finds you. Plus, she has a soft spot for big, goofy dogs and isn't afraid to go for what she wants.

A great story that tugs at the heart, makes you smile and laugh out loud. Can't wait for the next one in the series.

REALLY A 3.5 FOR ME

On one level I enjoyed this story. On another level I skipped lots of pages because of the repetition of things that appeared to be simply filler.

Yes, there were lots of dolls, and of course they were all killers. Yes, the handsome and charming sheriff, Nate, looked good in jeans and had male equipment that was breathtaking. Yes, Abby wanted to have sex with the handsome and charming sheriff, Nate, the minute she saw him. Yes, the handsome and charming sheriff, Nate, looked terrific walking away.

Ms Gallagher is a talented author. She creates interesting characters. I like character driven stories and this is strong on that. I would have liked some more activity that was not involving pre-sex, amidst-sex, post-sex. I am not against sex, either in a book or real life. I just believe that there can be other interesting aspects to a relationship.

I truly wanted to like this book much more than I did. I finished it because to be honest, I liked Nate and Abby. I wanted the best for them. I know this is the first in a series, and I have an idea about all the future cast members. All of those people are interesting and again, I hope for the best for them.

This is a well written story. I enjoyed Abby and Nate. Both of them are intelligent, caring and humorous people. The happily ever after should work well for them. The small town itself is almost a character in the story. Most citizens were involved in what happens there and apparently supportive of one another.

But, how in the world did the sheriff’s office not know who the thief was?

The Fixer Upper by Maggie Mae Gallagher is the first book of her Echo Springs series. The story focuses on Abbey Callier and her romance with Sheriff Nate Barnes. Nate’s big, lovable, slobbering Great Dane, Rufus brings some comedic relief. There is a strong sexual chemistry between Abby and her Sheriff Stud Muffin. I find Abby’s constant reference of her aunt’s dolls as the army of the undead dolls and her horror film entries not amusing. I do enjoy the way the journal Nate finds plays the part as a secondary story within the main storyline. The Fixer Upper is a spicy romance with a stellar supporting cast and Echo Springs brings out the flavors of small-town charm.

Not as much substance as it had potential for. At first, a bit prim, but quickly flipped to the side. I ultimately did not come to care for the characters. They were flat and not well developed. The sheriff had a crime to solve in the background and it seemed to be a waste of time all together
