In The Memory Bell, author Kat Flannery transports the reader to the small town of Oakville, Illinois, for an intriguing mystery tale that will keep the reader guessing and turning the pages.

Grace Penner's family means everything to her. When her grandfather passed away, she is gifted the family heriloom, a porcelain memory bell that he said would always bring their family together. But when the bell shatters, Grace glues the bell back together and realizes that three pieces are missing. She is determined to find the three pieces and put the bell back together.

Detective Bennet James was placed on probation after an incident at the Chicago Police Department, and was sent down to Oakville until Internal Affairs makes a decision. While in Oakville, Ben investigates the remains of a young woman found in a hand dug grave at a closed down mill. The coroner reports that the death of the Jane Doe was a murder that took place twenty-five to thirty years ago. Ben befriends Grace, but as his investigation into the murder brings her family into question, Grace begins to realize that her tight-knit family aren't what they appear to really be as long buried secrets, lies, and deceptions come to the surface.

Author Kat Flannery weaves a fast-paced and suspenseful tale written in alternating third person narrative that follows Grace and Ben's story as a shattered memory bell and an old murder investigation brings them together, and reveals an interconnection that threathens to tear the Penner family apart.

The reader is easily drawn into this well written story with its richly descriptive plot and setting. It is filled with enough family dysfunction and dark secrets, possible motives and suspects, a touch of an unexpected romance, and intriguing twists and turns that definitely keeps the reader guessing until the surprising conclusion.

This was a really interesting story to read! The author does a wonderful job of providing enough clues to engage the reader, and I found myself so caught up on trying to figure out all the Penner secrets and the identity of the murderer. I loved that both Grace and Ben's backstory and personal baggage brought them together, even when Grace's family was being investigated for the murder. I loved how the author put all the pieces of the Penner's dyfunctional and traumatically emotional family mystery puzzle together, and how appearances are deceiving. I would be remiss if I didn't mention how much I loved how Grace and Ben were both finally able to overcome their emotional baggage.

The Memory Bell will definitely take readers on one heck of a suspenseful roller coaster ride.

The Memory Bell by Kat Flannery is a gripping mystery thriller that is full of family dysfunction, long-kept secrets and a healthy dose of suspense loaded with twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the end.

This story revolves around Grace Penner, a conscientious small town girl, who inherited a memory bell, a family heirloom, from her grandfather. Her excitement soon disappear when the Bell gets broken just after she receives it. While collecting the pieces of the bell, she discovers that three pieces are still missing. To add more in her problems, there is a dead body found outside the town and an investigating detective, Bennet James, questions about her family and their involvement in the murder. However, as the investigation progresses, and missing pieces of the bell begin to appear with foreboding notes, Grace begins to understand that the Penners are not who they seem. Burdened by a grief and sorrow that is tearing her apart, a shell shocked Grace embarks on a mystery quest to unearth dark secrets her family holds, as she questions every aspect of her life.

The Memory Bell is a wonderful novel, it burrows into your consciousness and takes residence. It has an insidious charm with its themes of what it is to survive, love, loss, memory, and the problems associated with doing the right thing in a complicated family set up. The book has a riveting narrative interweaving a murder mystery and family secrets side by side with glimpses of nurture and protection. The family, the roles and relationships within it, is often a can of worms exploited in fiction, the author beautifully explores this territory. Despite the dark theme, The Memory Bell is a beautifully written book that swings effortlessly back and fro between the past and the present, slowly revealing the events and long buried secrets.

The core story was completely believable and is a testament to the quiet courage of a girl from small town. It shows the complex human psychology at work in a family unit. Brutality is juxtaposed against beauty, and regret sings a single note that lasts for the entire novel. The story also features a character study of one of the strongest female leads, Grace, I've run across this year. She is human and fallible like the rest of us.

The complex characterisations are astonishingly good and feel desperately authentic. The novel captures the small town atmosphere that can run through its young people, and the atrocious behaviour and actions that result. The strength and wisdom of Grace, given all that happens, along with her desire to protect her family, is awe inspiring.

Kat Flannery's writing style places the reader right next to her characters. She brings you right into their souls and you feel their conflict, drama and joys as though they were real and not just words on the page. Kat continues to build on the characters' strengths and surprises you just when you think you've got them figured out. The Author has incorporated all the elements that make for a fabulous read, a wonderful narrator, a complex plot that makes you question every characters' part in this deliciously, dark tale, that becomes more intriguing with each turn of the page. While the plot is suspenseful and the revelations make it a type of a mystery thriller, it is the character development, revealed through the perceptive, evocative, and striking language of the author, that packs the biggest punch.

The Memory Bell by Kat Flannery is essentially a deeply emotional, character-driven family drama, set to the backdrop of a brutal crime. It's a gripping, fascinating, heart-pounding, unputdownable thriller, a tragic tale of decisions and consequences, of love and how far you'll go to protect your own, a fascinating character study of people as real as any of us. Highly recommended.

The Memory Bell by Kat Flannery is a story filled with family drama and interesting characters. The recently found decades old murder was the catalyst that broke all the closely woven lies. The main character was young, gullible and easily led into wanting to believe the best of herself, and her family.

Grace Penner is excited to realize her grandfather left her the Memory Bell in his will. It was the bell he used to call them all to dinner. Grace always believed the bell held the family together and called them. When the bell was being handed over to her, it dropped and broke into lots of pieces. Grace is on a quest to glue it back together thinking it will help hold her family together.

Bennet James is in town on probation. He ends up with the decades old case and slowly starts to investigate when he runs into evidence that is damning to the Penner Family. From here Bennet and Grace are tied together helping take care of an older man who may have some knowledge of the events. Meanwhile, Grace’s family seems to be imploding and Grace is determined to fix everything. She is sure that if she can find the missing pieces of the bell and glue it back together - everything will be back to normal, but it is not looking that way for the Penners. More secrets eek out and the readers become aware of the forces at work, even when Grace is so determined that the information is not accurate.

I found the book,The Memory BelI totally by accident and found it a fast read. It is clear that there is more going on with the family and secrets that is going to cause a serious implosion when it is all figured out. I liked the metaphor between the bell and the family. The Memory Bell by Kat Flannery is an interesting read.

This book was an easy but compelling mystery thriller that kept me on my toes the whole time reading it. Reading this book reminds us that no one person or family is perfect. We all have our faults and our families all have secrets in our closets. How we choose to deal with them, is what is different. Grace, who is a very strong woman protagonist, inherits her grandfather’s memory bell when he passes away. When the bell gets broken shortly after receiving it, she painstakingly sets out to put it back together only to find that there are tree pieces missing. Upset not knowing where they are, Grace seeks to find them. While she is seeking, a dead body is found on the outskirts of town and an investigation begins. While Grace is searching for the pieces, one at a time they show up, and each one starts to reveal a secret held for so long revealed. This book intertwines murder and family ties, with a sense of responsibility’s to keep the family name upstanding. The author does a great job going from past to present to uncover the mysteries and answers Grace is seeking. Capturing the small time atmosphere is not always easy to depict, to have a reader understand and to feel it in a story. It is very well done here to show Grace’s love and desire to protect her family while at the same time staying true to her morals and ethics, I would recommend this book to others for its emotional family ties, and the tragic story of decisions and consequences that were made. It is not by any means a sappy book but a heartfelt mystery thriller with the love of family. This book may make some wonder what they would do if they found themselves in this situation. How far would you go to protect your family and its name. I received an ARC from the author and @partnersincrimevbt for my honest opinion. All opinions expressed here are my own.

The Memory Bell is a mystery that takes place in Oakville, Illinois involving the well-known Penner family, and a Detective from Chicago who is investigating a murder case based on old remains discovered in this small town. The memory bell, which belonged to Charlie Penner, was gifted to Grace after his passing much to the dismay of certain family members. Grace believed it kept the family together; therefore, causing her much distress once the memory bell shattered, and some pieces mysteriously went missing. We begin to see cracks in the seemingly perfect family as Detective Ben’s murder investigation reveals secrets that threaten to pull the family apart. This heartwarming mystery follows Grace on a mission to put her family back together as she seeks to find the missing pieces of the memory bell while Detective Ben tries to bring closure to an old mystery.

Kat Flannery captivates the reader throughout the novel as more secrets are revealed, and as the mystery is closer to being solved. The characters are very well-developed. Grace is sincere with her family ideals and is very personable to the reader. Specifically, the charming dynamic between Grace and Ben elevates the story. Flannery’s novel is beautifully written and comes together with a heartwarming ending despite the challenges and struggles experienced by each character in the novel. Surprising revelations and turns of events throughout the book are engaging and make this story truly unique. I would recommend this novel to anyone who loves a good and unexpected “whodunnit” with the perfect amount of romance interwoven into the story.

Sublime Line: “Kat Flannery writes a heartwarming and captivating mystery encompassing an old murder case and a symbolic memory bell in a small town where everyone has something to hide.”

The Memory Bell is a gripping mystery thriller that I found to be a wonderful read. As the book begins we meet Grace and her family, and even from the beginning I just got the feeling things were not as they seemed. As the family has gathered to distribute her grandfather's things, we see things begin to unravel. As Grace received what she had wished for, things really take a turn and we see jealousy rear its ugly head. We find over time that this family is full of dysfunction, with hidden secrets that can tear them all apart. When one family basically controls the town, they can either do good or they can do bad. Grace's sense of normalcy is torn apart as secrets are revealed, I really enjoyed this author's writing style the storyline just flowed from past to present day. A deeply emotional family drama, I most definitely would recommend this book to others. I received a print copy of the book from Kat Flannery and #partnersincrimevbt, without any obligation to give the book a favorable review. All opinions expressed here are my own personal opinion.

A small midwestern town is the perfect setting for the secrets and hidden behavior that begins to come to light after a body is discovered at the old abandoned mill on the edge of canola fields. This body is skeletonized so has some age to it and Detective Bennet James, on suspension from the state police, wants to take the lead on the case before boredom gets the best of him, and Sheriff Rhoads agrees.

Meanwhile, the granddaughter of the town’s leading family is angsting over an inherited family heirloom that’s broken with pieces missing. Setting out to find those pieces, Grace begins to unearth much more than she bargained for and learns some truths about her family that are unsavory, even shocking, and she may well wish she’d left well enough alone.

This story sets off at a leisurely pace, almost too slow, and it takes a while to gather momentum but, as we begin to learn what has gone on in this town, the tension mounts and the family saga versus the murder investigation comes to a satisfying head.

What a beautiful story. All over a broken trinket. The kind of things we think are so important and find later maybe we can manage anyway. But this isn’t just a story of broken memorabilia, it’s a great story of families and friends and relationships. While this is fiction, I can’t tell you there is anything here that isn’t possible. Both the bad things and the good.

But the whole “hook” to this story is just that...the story. It’s one of those that flows so well it’s hard to put down. It has very believable characters and very clear characters. I never once had to look back to see “who was whom” so to speak. A very good thing in my mind when reading.

Kat Flannery has several other books published. All have good reviews.

It was a pretty decent emotional read. There were a few errors though. June's name was June, then Jane, then June again. Then Ally's hair was red but several pages later it was blonde. I could swear a couple of other characters had an abrupt hair color change as well but didn't feel like scrolling back to scrutinize. Things like this irritate me. Why should I care about your story if you don't care enough to pay attention to detail?? Anyway, it wasn't an earth-shattering story but it hit me in the emotions a few times and hey, I finished the book. Which says a lot about the crap, good-story drought I've been enduring.

It's the bell that keeps the family together. The glue, so to speak. This memory bell is the one precious thing Grace inherited from her grandfather.

It gets broken almost immediately. Grace determinedly glued it all back together, but it had three pieces missing.

Grace didn't know it at the time but began learning just how broken her family really is. Appearances are definitely deceiving.

All Grace really wants is to put the bell and her family back together. Will she be able to find the missing pieces?

Looooved it.

So I usually just read fantasy. I got this book when the author was offering it for free and figured 'why not?'

Well I absolutely ADORED this book. I've always loved a good crime drama and throw in some romance and family dysfunction.... Just.... *Chef's kiss* I couldn't put the book down, going as far as to be sneaky and read it on my phone during slow periods at work. I would recommend this book to anyone and I'll probably start recommending it to literally everyone.

I liked the characters. This is a small town with the usual amount of secrets and a little girl who grew up believing in the best angels for her family. It's tough to learn they aren't all as wonderful as one would like. It's a slow romance but just right for two very broken characters. Anything else would have been too much. Well done. Not your average romance but a great read.

Memory bell

Sad commentary of one family's cruelty, lies, and deception through decades in a small town. Lots of unexpected turns that surprised me simply because I could not fathom that type of evil.

This novel got off to a slow start for me. At first, the concept of the memory bell and Grace's attitude towards it seemed really strange as a part of a murder mystery. By the end, however, I came to see its symbolic representation of aspects of the plot. I never did get to the point of liking Grace though. She was just too naïve and such a strong enabler. That she deliberately remained ignorant of Andy's condition and would not confront him, did not sit well with me.

This novel is as much about family secrets as it is a murder. The discovery of a body is the catalyst that sets off the revelation of family secrets. My goodness, this family had a ton of secrets. Those secrets were the main aspect of the book's plot. Solving the mystery was almost an after thought, it seemed, after most the family drama is resolved.

This is a novel for readers who like an emphasis on family relationships and secrets from the past coming to light.
