Joe Beck #3

The Divide: Book Three of the Joe Beck Series

Rate this book
After finally crossing the South Platte River, the wagon train headed north toward Lodge Pole Cree where they expected to find another set of ruts leading west to Oregon.

As he and Faith led their tent-cart away from Julesburg, Joe wondered if he wasn’t defying fate by leaving Colorado behind. The magnetic attraction that had pulled him south hadn’t diminished. But he still felt an obligation to the folks, even those who would never consider him a friend.

He and Faith still had no idea what lay ahead of them or where they would end their journey. But wherever it was, as long as they were together, it would be home.

Most biographies start with birth and then roll through the years as they drift by but that would bore me to death, and I lived through it.

The interesting part of my life began on September 23rd, 1995 as we were driving back to Omaha after watching the Notre Dame - Texas game in South Bend with relatives. The #21 Irish beat the #13 ranked Longhorns 55-27; and in a real oddity, scored points in just about every way conceivable in the game of football. They scored touchdowns on passes and runs, kicked a field goal, intercepted a pass for a TD, returned a punt for a touchdown and even added two points for blocking a Texas extra point.

As we were driving along westbound I-80 somewhere in Illinois in our Jeep Cherokee, I absent-mindedly rubbed the left side of my neck under my chin.

My very astute wife asked, "What's wrong with your neck?"

Now I had been an Air Force medic for twelve years; and as evident in my descriptions of outlaws' agonizing deaths in my stories, have a good working knowledge of anatomy and physiology. But that knowledge is offset by being a guy and thinking that we all live forever. My neck lymph nodes had been enlarged for around three months when my wife asked that question.

I obfuscated as if I was a lawyer and replied, "Um, a few weeks or so." (Note: Twelve or thirteen weeks does qualify as a 'few' weeks if one chooses to be generous.)

"And what did the doctor say?"

"I'll ask him when we get back."

"Yes, you will."

I do not want to make my wife out to be a harpy or a nag, because she is neither. She's an incredibly patient woman who could only put up with so much stupidity by yours truly.

Three days later, after the doctor copped a quick feel of my lymph nodes, he said, "I don't know what it is, but I don't like it," which was an honest, albeit an imprecise diagnosis.

So, we trotted over to a local ENT specialist. She didn't like them either and took me into surgery a few days later where she yanked one out, so the lab could dice it and slice it, then look at it under a microscope.

The pathologist who looked at the cells through his microscope reported his findings as 'lymphoepithelioma'. That meant that it was a secondary tumor and there was a primary tumor somewhere else in my nasopharynx that was the original problem.

Back I went into the operating room where the ENT doctor did an extensive examination and found nothing. She was so sure of her reconnaissance of the back of my throat that she told me that the pathologist was wrong, and it was just a lymphoma.

Now, being a computer geek, even way back in the dark ages of the internet in '95, I did some searching and found that if the primary tumor wasn't found, then the survival rate plummeted to about a fifth of the already lousy survival rate for the advanced Stage IV cancer. My wife and I decided that a second opinion might be a good idea.

Off we went in her Jeep to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota as the lousy weather descended across the Midwest. It's been known to happen, you know.

They had a problem getting the doctor here to release the specimen she'd yanked out of my neck, which I thought was odd because I don't remember selling it and figured I still owned it. Anyway, they eventually got the lymph node, did their own peek and confirmed the pathologist's diagnosis.

It wasn't until Halloween in 1995 that they finally found the original little bugger. It was just a tiny bump in the back of my throat that must have been there for a long time before it sent its friends marching into my lymph nodes.

They wanted to treat the cancer there, but I opted to have it done in Omaha and was sent to the care of Doctor Patrick J. McKenna (a name you may recognize from Max). Doctor Mac was the perfect man for the job as he was very personable, optimistic, had a good sense of humor and wouldn't put up with my constant whining. It helped that he knew his job, too.

Caught up again

I have read all of Chris's books, many of them twice. I'm extremely happy that he is writing again.I like the Joe Beck series but I hate the wait between the books. The wait isn't really that long. If I was the author you would be lucky to get one book a year.
I hope Chris can continue writing for many years to come!

Needs a Book 4

Great story but left me hanging - If there is not going to be a Book 4 then I wasted my time reading Books 1 - 3

In book three Joe and Faith are as steadfast as ever. The people traveling with them not so much.

Once again Joe is a scout for the wagon train while Faith stays with the female posse. Each day is a new adventure as Joe goes in search of food, faces down the Native American's (Indians back then) and much more. There is also strife in the wagon train as Mrs. Moore has not given up her anger as Joe causing Faith to leave and then Becky leaving as well.

The book moves at its own pace and it can be repetitive because this is a wagon train. To a certain extent (not including the adventure), the group does the same things every day.

There is a more private issue in that Faith isn't pregnant yet. Joe isn't worried about it, but now that Becky thinks she's pregnant Faith starts worrying whether she's barren. I doubt that's the case. I have noticed that the author likes to drag situations out that involve Joe and Faith. I suspect at some point Faith will be just as pregnant as the rest of the women.

All in all this is another great addition to the series. 5/5*

Joe, a 16year old phenomenon, is instrumental in leading a wagon train to Oregon!

Most certainly another five star masterpiece by Mr. Petit, who, once again proves his prowess in penning outstanding western folklore adventures! No slowdowns in this compassionately motivated series of unending excitement, as Joe, along with his friends, and the wagon master Bo, escort a wagon train to Oregon!
Outstanding storylines throughout this compelling western folklore story, as Bo, only 16 years old, proves himself over and over throughout this polarizing western folklore masterpiece! He finds himself married to a 15 year old, who encourages him to use his unique abilities to keep the wagon train personnel safe! The superbly selections of characters are unsurpassed in their respective assignments from beginning to end! No slow downs throughout this compelling western folklore extravaganza!
Certainly recommend this outstandingly descriptive western masterpiece to all, but all of you western folklore fanatics will definitely find yourselves completely entertained immediately and never falter until the final paragraph has been read! Too, even you non-western enthusiasts will certainly enjoy following these dedicated individuals as they continue their journey West, despite their ongoing pitfalls!!!😃

Good book! Love this series

I have read the previous books in this series. Any one can stand by itself, but if you like series books and play to read a few they do go in chronological order.
Decide reveals how many kinds of decision can occur within a group of interdependent people all set on Oregon. Although out hero has put his life on the line reveal times, A few start rumors aimed at getting g him booted. Some divide over the route, how to deal with an illness, and especially in dealing with threats from Native Americans.
This book is a great adventure, but no review is complete without critique.
I wish the author learned a bit more about horses, their behavior, and their terms for their distinct colors (to avoid using several sentence that could be replaced with terms like chestnut, buckskin, or sorrel)

Joe and Faith continue in their adventures with the wagon train as their relationship continues to mature. Joe is wise beyond his years as he meets challenges that would challenge an experienced adult. He faces danger from a war-like tribe of Indians and made friends instead of enemies. In the wagon train there are those who dislike Joe and there are threats against him that brew from time to time. Illness and accidents challenge the settlers as they continue their journey. Joe and Faith acquire a collie who will become part of their family. As this book ends there is a suggestion of trials that will emerge in volume 4. C. J. Petit engages the reader as Joe and Faith continue their journey. A compelling and interesting story.

SATISFYING ACTION & JOURNEY OF JOE BECK BK 3

5 STARS for Book Three which is the same as Books Two & One of the Joe Beck Series! His adventures which start being described for the reader is at the age of 15 then to the age of 16 are amazing. Action filled, guns being shot even in war at this times, Indians, buffalo situations, & crazy strange minded people are just some of the things Joe Beck has to deal with when he decides he wants to join a wagon train to go west.

This is decided because he is alone living in the barn at his Uncle's farm, but now his Uncle has died & his oldest cousin has inherited & told him to leave. Considering he had not done anything but labor for
free, he was glad to go.
All 3 books are recommended.

The Divide

This third series had a lot action with the Blackfoot Indians but also the challenges of bad rumors about Joe Beck instigated by Mrs Moore. I don't think that Mrs Moore is satisfied until Joe Beck is killed. But Joe is a compassionate person and he along with Faith helped the family who were ostracized because they believe they had dysentery. They are now over half way to there destination. Looking forward for the next book in series.

Great book 3rd book in the series, keeps you in interest from the beginning to the end of the book.

I loved the series, the characters are all played well. Amazing the main character is 16 years old. The book is amazing with the way it holds you interest. C J Petit definitely knows how to write and keep your Interest.
The only thing I an disappointed in is it seems like the series was left unfinished. It left you kind of hanging in the end. That's unusual for this author.

Always Changing

One can only imagine what really happened on the journey west as Manifest Destiny took hold and all of those folks moved west. Fighting sickness, differences and the many facets of the unknown really made those journeys an adventure. As Joe and Faith deepen their marriage they also become ipso facto leaders of the wagon train. Hope the next volume of the series arrives soon.

This is pretty goog Western, but I am partial to them. It seems the story just move along with a better pace. I guess I am a different sort of reader. I like to switch around on genres. Syfy, mystery, detective, outer space stuff gets old. The same old shit earth is attached by aliens then the whole book is about outer space battles. Lord almighty guys are the no creative thinkers in this area ??? It,s the universe any thing is possible.

Another good addition to the Joe Beck series. Each installment expands the world in a way I hadn't expected before. My only major complaint about this book is that it felt like there weren't any major stakes. Life on the frontier was seldom without danger, but Joe Beck feels invincible. Maybe this is on purpose, but I feel that it detracts more from the story than it adds. Otherwise, keep writing Mr. Petit!

Great alone but all 3 books standalone well

When book 80 suggested we might not get more c j petit, I was devastated. I've had several masses said for Chris'es (spelling) continued good health. Maybe it's working because God knows how extraordinary the talent he gave cj petit truly is. So, do I.

Great story!

I have enjoyed every book that I've read by C.J Petit. I love to get so totally lost in a story that time just flies by. I actually fantasized about the Oregon trail, what life was like back then, the hardships they faced without modern medicine or doctors. I read all three stories and would highly recommend this series.

Book #3 of Joe Beck series is awesome!

Book three doesn't disappoint. Joe and Faith continue their wagon train trip West. The teens continue to explore and discover life together amongst a variety of many people and personalities. Death, marriages, and expectancy being excitement to each day. I love it and am hoping for a release of book #4 to continue their journey.

Great read!

Story was not only exciting, but very entertaining and informative. Learned quite a bit about riding with a wagon train, the time, and the people of that era. Loved the characters….they were very personable, believable, and at times, you felt like you were riding along with them. Have enjoyed all the books and looking forward to reading a continuation of the story.

enjoyed

First off the author CJ Petit uses a lot of biblical belief in his story telling with zero profanity. And not as much violence as some other writers. Yet I still find myself not able to put my ereader down. And Joe Beck series has been enjoyable read with hopes of a number 4 asap.

The Story of Joe and Faith Beck continued.

What an awesome continuation of the Beck saga, Joe and Faith are so mature, I forget they are in their teens. It seems that although a few accidents have happened on the wagon train, things are working out for the best. Was thrilled when the Becks found a new dog, named Laddie.

Another excellent read!

A great story of the Great Plains and the hazards of crossing them. Indian troubles and some inbreeding twist and turns makes it a great read! Might not be as quick paced as the quick action of some non-stop action weakens, but super good ole real West.........

great series with awesome characters.

The Joe Beck series is a breath of fresh air. Love the characters, story and dynamic of the time it portrays. When hardworking and hard times find grace, kindness but sometimes cruel and harsh endings. I am so happy the Joe Beck series continues for I’m off to the next book.

Good reads

I like all 3 books.
I'm curious to know how fast a trot is.
Joe taught Faith a lot, reading and riding.
His knowledge of so much seemed unreal.
I'm hoping Joe and Faith will be in the next books, going to Oregon.
