The Ship Between the Worlds

Rate this book
When David finds himself aboard a pirate ship, he knows it must be a dream. Except that he's awake. And the "dream" is more like a nightmare. Before he can take it all in, David is swept up in the adventure of a volunteered to act as a spy on an enemy ship, marooned, and picked up by the most fearsome band of buccaneers ever known. Can he escape?

The answer lies in the golden thread glistening under the sea - and everyone is desparate to have it. Could it lead David home, or to his missing father - or both?

My journey to becoming an author has been a roundabout one, taking in many other careers. I grew up on the edge of Epping Forest and was that dreamy kind of child who was always writing stories. After reading English at Cambridge, I decided to find out as much as I could about the wider world so joined the Foreign Office and served in Poland. My work as a diplomat took me from the high point of town twinning in the Tatra Mountains to the low of inspecting the bottom of a Silesian coal mine.

On leaving Poland, I exchanged diplomacy for academia and took a doctorate in the literature of the English Romantic Period at Oxford. I then joined Oxfam as a lobbyist on conflict issues, campaigning at the UN and with governments to lessen the impact of conflict on civilians living in war zones - a cause about which I still feel very passionate.

Married with three children, I now live in Oxford between two rivers, surrounded by gargoyles, beautiful sandstone buildings and ancient trees.

My first novel, 'The Diamond of Drury Lane', won the Waterstone's Children's Book Prize 2006 and the Nestle Children's Book Prize 2006 (formerly known as the Smarties Prize). I was also chosen by Waterstone's in 2007 as one of their 'Twenty-five authors for the future'. In the US, 'Secret of the Sirens' won the honor book medal of the Green Earth Book Award.

My latest series, which starts with Mel Foster and the Demon Butler, about an intrepid Victorian orphan who lives in a household of monsters, won Bronze in the Primary Teacher awards in 2015. The next part, Mel Foster and the Time Machine, has set the time-dial to arrive in 2016.

I re-read this book on holiday. I like this book a lot, even if that does make me childish!

Obviously, it involves adventure, pirates, saving the world, mysteries and a character we can really relate to - so all the makings of a good story!

The character of David is likable, even though I'll never be able to understand the fascination with making a ship in a bottle. I love the Captain of the Golden Needle, Reuben Fisher. He just demands respect, all the more for formerly being a rogue who has changed his ways.

The Seas In-Between are a marvellous idea as is the notion of sewing the worlds together! I just love the simplicity and the complexity of this book. All the ingredients required for a great feel-good book. I'm just sad that mine fell apart whilst on holiday!

A fun romp.

Seemed a bit basic for young adult, but a bit gruesome or perilous in parts for smaller children, so I’m not sure where this was aimed. Dropped a star due to some plot holes.

Okay, I didn't think I'd like this as I'm not really into Davy Jones and Pirates but I love Julia Golding so far, so thought I'd give it a bash.

WELL! It was actually really good. I loved the story line and the different species and I loved not knowing what side his father on until the end. And it's not the Davy Jones with the locker!

As usual with Julia Golding, straight away you get a complete mental image of the places and the people like you're watching it instead of reading it. Just how I love it to be. I feel I've seen the seas in-between with my own eyes. Some authors just fail to give across the complete picture but never Julia.

I didn't quite like the storyline as much as the Companion Quartet, but I think that's just I prefer magical creatures over pirates ;)

I would say this book is perfect for young boys, but I'm a 25 year old girl and I enjoyed it too!

In style the plot reminded me of a mixture of Peter Pan, Treasure Island and Pirates of the Caribbean. A sweet book for kids and YA. I hadn't expected much from it, so I was pleasantly surprised. Sure, I'm quite a bit older than the target audience, but it was charming enough to entertain me as well.

It was okay. Reasonable story for a younger audience (picked up for free on my kindle). I do enjoy YA, I'm not sure I would pay for this but an ok read for free.

A gripping tale of high adventure and piracy, set on the seas between the worlds. Lovely well-developed characters in a great story. I enjoyed reading this.
