Kat was one of the characters that had me extremely intrigued since we hadn't learned much about her yet. Her story was far beyond what I was actually expecting, but I liked it. She and Jim had some strong chemistry that was enjoyable to see.

I felt like I didn't get enough of them though, and again I was annoyed at how much the past characters kept popping up with their own scenes. This is a series that definitely needs to be read in order but I do recommend it.

In the fourth book in the Unseen Enemy series, Kat and Jim get their turn at romance as we finally find out the secrets in Kat’s past and why Jim is so reticent to discuss his past in Afghanistan.

The Good, The Bad and Everything In Between
The series is really a continuing drama filled with characters that you learn to care about, but little action. I struggled most with this story, as Jim is an insecure hero, and the action that I thought would finally play out, was done off-page. I was disappointed in that. There’s a HEA of sorts, but it was open ended to continue the series. Also, it kind of brought home the samey-ness of the love scenes for each couple.

The Bottom Line (3.5 stars)
I like the series, even if this wasn’t one of my faves. I would read more from this author.

Great ending to a series! NOT... the ending.......but GREAT, AND a HFN (a little abrupt). ^_^ I really liked the flow of this book-- maybe the most of all 4 of these books(so far). There are some updates with the previous book lead characters. Kat's story starts off with another woman (trying) to recover from a VERY BAD "relationship" with a VERY BAD man. At first, I was, "OH NO, not again" Jim and the guys step in help. I won't say how, but there are two NEW supporting characters that are introduced in the last half of the book. OH NO new characters thrown in again? Nope! They're a great addition, IMO. I really like my friend Bev's review-perfect- so check out her review too. I agree with Bev, that Kat is no TSTL h and Jim is doing his best to deal with his PTSD. I do wish that there would have been a little more time spent on that issue. I'm sure that there will be more on all of the guys and ladies in the next book!
I can't say too much more. A quick read. I will be looking out for book 5 (eta March 2015).
4.5 stars!

This is the story I have been really looking forward to. Through the first three books Kat was hiding something, and Jim was the quietest, most reserved of the four friends.

Now then, it's not often I read, believe and fall in love with an insecure hero. I did this time. Jim held himself responsible and hadn't really moved on from an incident that happened whilst he was serving in Afghanistan. PTSD? Yes, I think so, so no wonder he was wary and reserved, I think this made me love him all the more.

Kat is a woman on the run, and once she revealed why I totally got why she was so secretive and withdrawn. Geez, who wouldn't be?

This was another fabulous, slow build romance with a hot, sexy, insecure yet alpha Jim and a strong heroine. It's been an absolute pleasure to read a run of books with no TSTL woman pulling stupid moves.

The book ends on a HFN, but thankfully the next book is out in March and I can't wait to catch up with them all to see how they are doing.

3.75 RATING- This was my leaste favorite of the Unseen Enemy series but I still liked it. I just didn't feel the same chemistry between these two characters that I did with the other characaters from previous books. I also thought ending was rushed. Really looking to the next book, expected out in March.

Dear God. So good. F'ing loved the character development, and loved how James wasn't afraid to make Jim arrogant and vulnerable.

Dear God. The next book in the series comes out in March? WHYYYYYYY??

FOUR 'SAFE AT LAST' STARS!

This is the fourth book in the Unseen Enemy series by the very clever Marysol James. This story focuses on Kat and Jim, while still following along the story lines of the couples from the first three books. I have grown to adore this author and the way she is able to weave such richly developed and incredibly powerful stories in so few pages. Her books, while short on page numbers, read like much longer novels solely due to this authors savvy storytelling abilities. I'm fully invested in these characters and very much looking forward to future installments of this captivating series.

"She was a riddle wrapped in a mystery dipped in a bottle of hair dye."

Katherine "Kat" Lawrence is an enigma. While she has managed to cultivate a close knit group of friends in Emma, Olivia and Jenny, as well as Jim, Dean, Dallas and Chris, they only know about Kat what she shows them. She is loyal, she is kind, she is a fierce friend. Beyond that, they know nothing of her life, her past or the enormous fear that shrouds her very existence. She is guarded, she is closed off, she is a closed book when it comes to personal details or information on her past. The men have picked up on this and know that there is much more to Kat than meets the eye, Dallas knows a bit more as he has investigated Kat when he was working on Olivia's stalker case. What he found was a woman with no past, a woman who didn't really exist. Her recent behavior sparks a fire in Jim to find out what she is hiding or who she is hiding from.

"What's going on with you, baby?"

Kat is a woman on the run, but none of her friends know this. She doesn't stay anywhere very long, and she obsessively changes her appearance, with her career as a hairdresser providing perfect cover for the constant color and style changes. She obsessively guards her personal details and information about her past. She has gotten swept up in her friendship with Jenny, Olivia and Emma, and she has stayed in Denver much longer than she ever had planned. She has grown to genuinely care for these women, allowing herself the solace of their friendship, and she has stayed this long to see them through their troubles. Jim sees Kat as a puzzle, he's not sure exactly what to make of her, but she raises every suspicious bone in his body. He just knows something is going on with her, but he has no idea what. Kat drops off the grid for a few days, alarming her friends and Jim when they can't find her, they can't reach her by phone, and she isn't returning their calls. Jim gets a middle of the night call from the owner of a notoriously dangerous local bar asking him to come and get Kat, who has been on a drunken binge in his bar for the last four days. Jim immediately goes to her, brings her home, and waits for her to sleep it off. He has no intentions of leaving until she answers his questions, and she will answer all of them.

"I'm asking you to please trust me. Can you do that?"

Kat finally emerges from her drunken stupor to find that she is in her apartment, and Jim is there refusing to leave until she talks to him. He is adamant and unwavering in his insistence that she confide in him. He calls the guys over, and Kat agrees, hesitantly, to tell them everything, but she does so with conditions, and one of those conditions is something that Jim struggles with accepting. She finally opens up to the guys and tells them why she's running and the type of guy she's running from. She admits that she was raped and beaten repeatedly by a powerful man who is considered a hero in her hometown. This man has stalked her, threatened her, and terrified her. He controls her with threats of violence against her friends and family to keep her in line. He also tells her, to her horror, that she is his and they were meant to be together. Kat discovers she is pregnant and gathers the courage to finally report the attacks. A female administrative worker in the police department intercepts her, and this woman and her boyfriend, who are not surprised by Kat's story, help her to formulate an escape plan. He bides his time and manages to get her alone nearly beating her to death and causing her to miscarry. While she is hospitalized, he learns about the baby and blames her for killing his child promising to kill her. She checks herself out of the hospital and immediately leaves town with the help of the woman from the police station. This woman continues to be her eyes and ears, and they maintain discreet contact over the years, which is how Kat knows that he is still hunting for her. Her fear is tangible, and the guys are concerned that Kat is so frightened that they won't be able to convince her to stay.

"We have to make her feel safe somehow."

Jim is enraged after hearing the details of what Kat has been through and is still dealing with. The man who has been tormenting and terrorizing her for years is a former HS football star, a retired Marine and currently a sheriff. He is, on the surface, the trifecta of a responsible, respectable persona. He's military trained, he's got a badge and he's sadistically obsessed with finding her. Her terror at being found by this man is a living, breathing part of her. She is not only afraid for herself, she's terrified that if he found her, he could easily find and try to use Emma, Olivia or Jenny against her or that one of the guys would be hurt by him in the process of protecting her. This is a real possibility, it's absolutely something he would do, and he'd enjoy doing it. She cannot live with this possibility, and she tries to make the guys see it from her perspective. The guys consider Kat to be one of them and, Jim especially, want her to stay so they can protect her. Kat is determined to move on, though, if they cannot convince her of their ability to protect her, and she'll do whatever she needs to do to protect her friends.

"You're not in this alone, baby. Not anymore."

Dallas proposes the beginnings of a plan, and Jim promises to stay with her until they know what this guy is up. Dallas can investigate him without his knowledge if she gives him the guy's name and the name of her hometown. She finally breaks down and tells Dallas she's from Foxburg Falls, Oregon and his name is Michael Ferguson. She's exhausted and worried, but for the first time in years, Kat also feels relieved, not so alone and safe. Jim felt rage and was quite surprised by the depth of his anger. Jim is furious that Ferguson is ex-military and using his training, along with his badge, to abuse, intimidate and terrify Kat. He believes it is their responsibility to stop this guy.

"...she deserves more and better, but it's something you can do. So ... do it."

Hearing about Ferguson triggers Jim's personal demons about his own self worth. He truly believes that he's nothing special and that his only purpose is to follow direction from others. He cannot help but compare himself to his friends. After all, Dallas was a crack sniper and is now a business owner; Dean was their LT and he's also business owner as well as Jim's boss; and while Chris was a foot soldier like Jim, he is special in that people are naturally drawn to him, able to trust in and talk to him. Jim doesn't believe he has any of these qualities. The other couples' stories continue in this book with Emma getting incredible news regarding her health crisis, Olivia and Dallas' wedding plans, and Jenny and Chris' new love.

"You have no right to ask this of them."

Kat is feeling very guilty, and despite his belief that he's not the right guy to be there for her, she makes it clear to Jim that she wants him. It's Jim that she feels safest with, and he's genuinely surprised by her admission. Kat and Jim are attracted to each other, but neither is willing to act on it. Jim thinks she is exasperating, and Kat thinks he is infuriating but each is dreaming and fantasizing about the other. Since Jim is staying with Kat, they do take this opportunity to really talk and get to know each other better. Dallas has launched his investigation into Ferguson and has learned that he's closer to finding Kat than she ever imagined. Kat's knee jerk reaction is to run, right away. Dallas has a plan, though, and she agrees to hear him out.

"We've got him."

Dallas sends two of his team members, Hunter "Sully" Sullivan and Cordelia, his receptionist, to Kat's hometown to pose as a married couple looking to relocate. They're to follow Ferguson and keep an eye him. They hit the jackpot, though, one night while following him and learn what he's really been doing. With the help of the woman from the police station, who kept an eye on Ferguson and kept in touch with Kat over the years, they collected evidence of his illegal activities. Ferguson was arrested, and Kat was finally free to live her life - and to stay in Denver.

"She's just given me everything."

Kat finally admits to Jim what she's feeling, and he does as well. Months of longing and attraction explode into a beautiful baptism of sorts for Kat, as she finally tells Jim her real name. Jim stays with her, and they begin to build their relationship. Jim eventually confides in Kat and shares his pain with her. Not even the guys knew what Jim was holding on to from Afghanistan. What happened there is at the very crux of Jim's issues. Kat comforts Jim and shares with him why she has so much faith and trust in him, and he listens and absorbs it all. It's a very poignant moment for Jim. Through Kat's eyes, Jim starts to see a different version of himself.

"If I don't want to run anymore, then I have to stand still...I want to stand with you."

Cordelia gets news that Ferguson jumped bail. They fear that he's headed toward Denver, and Kat is ready to bolt. She knows that Jim will never let her go, so she takes matters into her own hands so that he won't be able to stop her. She gets as far as her own sidewalk, and then changes her mind. Dallas sends a team back out to Oregon to get information and work with the local police. They find where Ferguson is hiding. Working with the local police, they've got him trapped and surrounded. The police are in position, poised to make their move. For Kat, it's almost over; she's finally safe.

The more I read this author's work, the more impressed I become. I love this series and these characters, and I'm anxiously awaiting the next installment, Sully's story. Jim and Kat were the most complicated characters of this group, and I think the author did a fabulous job peeling back their layers and getting them to the point of loving and trusting each other. This author has such an amazing gift in the way she is able to build a world and tell a story. It is such a pleasure to read her work. This was another stellar addition to a fantastic series! Highly recommend!!

I am unsure of my rating at the moment, because I had some major problems with this one.

I didn't really feel the connection between the Jim and Kat at all. Maybe because the author caught you up on the other couples from the previous books and Jim and Kat didn't have enough story time. Now for the major problem. We already know the bad guy in the book is cruel and crazy. But when we meet him, he is all friendly and outgoing. To make her point that he is a psycho, the author tell us his inner monologue, which is extremely racist and sexist. I couldn't believe what I was reading and honestly it took away from the story for me. I don't know if I am over-reacting, but it is how I feel and I am going with it.

I think what I loved about this one was Jim. Before this book, he was always kind of a mystery, and we knew that he was suspicious and glared a lot. But I didn't expect him to be so vulnerable (he hides it well) and so uncertain. The way he thinks about himself as not good enough and not worth trusting is heart breaking.

The relationship between Kat and Jim is a thing of beauty. Marysol James is an expert at showing a relationship developing and growing, and I really find her writing unbelievably emotional. She's a 5-star author for me, hands down.

Aw, Jim. Come over here and let me give you a hug. Up against this wall (that scene was HOT!).

Anyway, sweet story, but also sexy as hell, which seems to be Marysol James' MO. Emotional and steamy, but also really well-written.

Can I also add? EMMA AND DEAN! OLIVIA AND DALLAS! JENNY AND CHRIS! Yeah! Love all the follow-up with their stories' too.

This was my least favorite of the series. I didn't think the main characters had a strong connection or believable chemistry. The romance and story was kind of boring compared to the other books.

The highlight was catching up with the characters from previous books. I enjoyed seeing bits of their lives as secondary characters.

Why???

I was in love with this series, devouring the books in record time, pleased as punch to have found it.... ( I'm intentionally not putting spoilers) then... Totally out of left field to the point I felt paralyzed you introduced an extremely racist character... The vulgarity you used to describe Black people was dehumanizing. Not just nigger (because that's not enough) you referred to us as monkeys... Why would you go there. The character was villainous enough with his disdain for women and others. I literally felt paralyzed, and wonder about how the author feels about people of color after reading the passage.
I'll be honest the above takes about a page, it is not a great part of the book...it just left me reeling.

3.5 - 4 JUMPING JIM-IN-EE STARS!!

Once again another great read from Marysol James!

This was Kat and Jim's story, and it was a page turning fast paced read just like the other books. The only reason it wasn't a solid 4 star read for me was the ending, it was abrupt and in turn a bit of an anti-climax. Don't get me wrong I stilled loved it and can't wait for the next one in the series!

the one thing i am not enjoying about this series is how much page time the previous couples get. don't get me wrong, i want to see them happy and stuff, but only through the eyes of the current main characters or just small snippets of their lives now, not several pages or detailed scenes. anyway. i wanted to read this one because i wanted to tick off the 4 original girls and be done with it, but dang it the next one has me curious and it looks like i will continue the series. this one was probably my least favourite of the first 4, i just didn't feel a whole lot for kat and jim together. didn't hate it, still passed the time fine, but didn't love it. this author packs a punch in such short books, but this was the first one where i felt like it was short, you know? like it was missing stuff. oh well, onwards and upwards.

Disappointing and unsatisfying read

Plot: D
I thought this would be kind of suspenseful and mysterious like the previous books in the series. We have Kat who is on the run...so I thought a lot would happen with this. But instead we have a book that is comprised largely of the continuation of the previous book's characters. And in the end, the situation wasn't even resolved! So anticlimactic.
And to top it off at 66% I was put off with those comments about black people. I know they are coming from the villain, but I don't want that type of racism in the books that I read.
Characters: C-
I had a hard time connecting with Jim and Kat. I virtually know nothing about them or what kind of people they are. We basically got so little of their story or interactions. There are too many sections with other couples. It distracted from the main couple. They didn't even form a relationship beyond friendship until 75%, and then the book ended quickly. It seemed like there was no buildup, and we didn't even really have a chance to enjoy them being together.
Heat: D
By the time Jim and Kat got together (and only once) I was over it, and didn't enjoy the scene. I think there were scenes with the other characters, but I wasn't interested because it wasn't their story.

The most interesting part of this story was Sully and Cordelia, but I'm afraid that story will he just as bad. This story was just a huge let down.

Not at all the usual ending in these types of stories. Typically, the stalker from the past shows up and there's some kind of showdown and the H rides on in and rescues our damsel in distress. This book does none of that.

SPOILER ALERT!!

When Kat finds out that the guy from her past is on his way to find her, she drugs Jim and we're left thinking that she's going to run again. Instead (and this is the amazing part, the part that I love) she CHOOSES TO STAY AND DEFEND HER NEW LIFE. I mean, wow! Female empowerment! She decides to face whatever's coming, and to take precautions to protect the people she loves, and she does all this by herself. She waits for Jim to wake up, she apologizes for panicking, and they move on to face whatever it is together. So much better than Jim storming in and saving Kat's poor, helpless ass, you know?

I'm so excited about the next book, which will focus on Sully and Cordelia. I LOVE Cordelia, and have done since she appeared in Book 2 and kicked her ex-boss' ass a bit. Cool woman.

Probably 2 1/2 stars. This was the weakest story so far. In the previous books the focus was on the main couple while still checking in the couples from the other books. There was way too little Jim and Kat time in this story and the ending felt abrupt.

There was a part in the story where the villain is saying racist disgusting things about a character who will be in a future book. It's was completely off-putting and I didn't think it was necessary. It was brief, but it completely pulled me out of the story.

I did enjoy the parts with the past characters, it was just a bit of a let down overall.

I think this one might be my least favourite so far but it’s still a fab read.

Jim and Kat obviously have feelings for each other but they both have their own VERY valid reasons for not acting on them. Jim comes to Kat’s aid once her big secret is revealed and turns out to be a very protective alpha (my favourite kind).
This one is a slow build up which often annoys me but not in this case, the story needed it to go slow or it wouldn’t have been believable. Once again this ends on a HFN but fear not as all the couples are featured in the next books so you get to catch up along the way.

I have totally fell I love with this series and can’t wait for more.

I knew this one was going to be a harder read than most of the others due to the nature of Kat's past. I loved how Jim was there for her and reassuring her safety and how much he loves her. I like reading about the other couples who are in this series and getting frequent updates on them. My only problem with this series and her other one's too is that they're just too short. I feel like these stories about the main couple should be more in depth or complex and could have been truly amazing. I still love this book and series, as well as her other series too! I'll continue to read every one through the end.
I definitely recommend this book and series!

I have enjoyed this series, but I have to admit that this was my least favorite so far. I was looking forward to Kat and Jim's story, but it just wasn't all that I expected. First, it seemed shorter than the other stories. I liked catching up with the characters, but I felt like it didn't focus enough on Kat and Jim. The action mostly happened off of the page, so it was almost...boring. I also just didn't feel the same connection between Kat and Jim that I felt with the other couples. I am excited to read book 5 though!

I thought for sure we'd have some better resolution on some of the characters' relationships, but alas no.

This is about Kat and Jim and we learn why Kat was missing and how these two get together. This relationship was completely boring. Jim seems intriguing, his boss interesting and we learn nothing substantial about either to turn up the excitement here.

Even Kat's story is anticlimactic as the author makes it all about whether she will stay and fight her demons or if she'll leave and abandon everyone she's come to love over the past year.

Sigh.

Best series

Love these books. Intertwined within all the series so you see all couples growing in their relationships. Very emotional plots and intense characters. The couples have outside problems they deal with but little angst between them. The H are truly heroes that deal with what feels like real life issues in a real way. Glad I gave this series a try. I will definitely continue reading this author's books.

Good, but not my favorite

3 1/2 stars. This book had good suspense, and a carryover of the characters from the previous books--just like I suspected from this series. However, this definitely was not my favorite couple from the series--I just didn't feel their romantic connection like I did with the others. The h did surprise me in the end--but in a good way. I also felt there was much more of a "cliffhanger" feeling to the ending.
