Gregory George Notso Normal, and five of his buds, after a couple of beers at the American Legion Post, decide to take on the woke, politically correct crowd. These woke, politically incorrect whippersnappers fill the World Wide Web with their truth. Which in most cases is not the truth at all. Notso and the five form COPs, Curmudgeonly Old Poops. They decide to put the real truth, COP-truth out there. That will set the whippersnappers straight. It doesn’t take long, though, before the COPs run into trouble with the American Legion Post Commander, the police (real cops), and their own spouses, The Hermudgeons.
On the other side of the ledger, the Old Poops develop a required reading list for membership in COPs. The Hermudgeons are amazed to discover their Poop husbands will turn off Gunsmoke to read books. The Hers read the books, too, and are even more amazed.
John Zerr (J.J. Zerr) was born in St. Peters, Missouri, and graduated from Duchesne High School. In 1959, he began a thirty-six year career in the Navy, during which he completed two tours on destroyers. After joining the aviation community, he flew 330 combat missions over Vietnam. Across his Navy career, he accumulated 1017 carrier landings.
Following the service, he worked in the aerospace industry for eleven years. He began his third career with the publication of The Ensign Locker in September 2010. The story is set on a US Navy destroyer operating in the Tonkin Gulf in 1966. His second novel, Sundown Town Duty Station, was published in 2013.
A group of older men with controversial political views that differ from society have weekly meetings at an American Lodge. The men discussed various topics over beers and decided to share their opinions on social media like Facebook. By sharing their truths on an open platform for others to respond, it allowed people to stop and take a second thought about everything, which became a whole new meaning to typical retirement activities. This group of older men are from ex-law officials and ex-militant backgrounds and can add more thoughts on any matter from a non-civilian standpoint. They called themselves the Curmudgeonly Old Poops, or COPs, a play on their police and military experience. Their wives figured out what their husbands were up to on Facebook and admired them for displaying maturity on tough topics. It created a new dynamic and excitement as it inspired the ladies to form supplementary COPs Ladies but from women's perspective.
Our world is full of controversy, and since everyone has an opinion, it doesn't hurt to be vocal and share them. With an insightful view of individuals who are of an older generation, along with knowledge in law enforcement and military fields, one would be wise to consider their perspectives. Their common goal is to bridge the gaps our country people are experiencing that keep us divided, especially since political correctness got out of hand over the years. The balance in their dispatches or posts encourages everyone to view circumstances from both sides and come to mutually understanding others. Wisdom is shared throughout this book's pages while showing the elders in a new light. Every meeting they have, the men become more crediable by instead, of voicing their truths, they flipped it around for everyone to look for truth with an open mind.
At first, I thought this book would be about ex-cops and how they felt about society as a whole, with mentions of controversial subjects that could make one uncomfortable. I was relieved because the book provided insightful views I didn't know I needed to read. When they say you can learn a lot from the older generations if you give them the floor to speak, just believe that the takeaway knowledge is invaluable. A definite page-turner because I found myself wanting to read through it without interruptions. Surprisingly, this book was well-written and enjoyable to read, I highly recommend it to others. Do not judge this book at face value but embrace what you'll uncover within it.

J.J. Zerr has written a witty and satirical narrative centered around a group of five elderly American friends who have grown weary of political correctness. They establish their own society, the Curmudgeonly Old Poops (COP), and embark on a quest to challenge what they perceive as excessive political correctness, while simultaneously seeking their own moral compass.
The language employed in the book is highly colloquial, reflecting the regional vernacular of the characters. The writing is well-executed, but readers' enjoyment may hinge on their familiarity or willingness to engage with the characters' unique linguistic style. It's worth noting that the characters appear to be GOP supporters, albeit not fans of Donald Trump. As a non-US reader who generally identifies as "woke," I still found the book entertaining, and it provided a more nuanced perspective on American right-wing supporters, highlighting their heterogeneity.
The story focuses on the characters' introspection, exploring their moral and ethical beliefs, while also offering an intriguing portrayal of the polarized political landscape in the United States. For those who may be sensitive to opposing political views, I recommend approaching this book with an open mind. However, if you're interested in a fictional, yet insightful, examination of a segment of American socio-political perspectives, this book makes for an engaging read.

Zerr introduces a unique ensemble of characters, each meticulously developed with distinct personalities, thoughts, and opinions. The narrative is engaging, with a refreshing and original plot that keeps the story flowing seamlessly from beginning to end. The prose is clear and straightforward, albeit occasionally too direct. With that in mind, I recommend that readers give this book a chance and form their own opinions on this intriguing and unconventional novel.
