It begins with a daring commando raid to capture a highly-specialized warship. But this time, global arms runner Pierre Renard is not the mastermind behind the crime. He’s the victim and the hijacked vessel is his hybrid combat/salvage submarine, the Goliath.
In addition to its vital role in his plans, the lost sub is a stab at Renard’s heart, a reminder that even his Machiavellian schemes cannot guarantee protection against clever enemies. For the first time, he’s reacting rather than taking control, dancing on the puppet strings instead of pulling them.
Leading the chase to recapture the Goliath is disgraced former US naval officer Jake Slate, once again in command of Renard’s mercenary fleet. Pitted against a crafty and deadly adversary, Slate knows that he can’t continue to defy the odds indefinitely.
Comme les precedents toujours aussi intense pressé de lire le chapitre suivant la fin arrive toujours trop vite j attend le prochain avec impatience Merci
As usual, the focal point is Pierre Renard and his three-boat mercenary fleet. (Spoiler) And one of these is hijacked. The hijackers are pawns in a larger scheme. With a series of this length, it is inevitable that there be a few lows among the many highs. I have read the other reviews. I am hardwired to enjoy each of the Rogue Submarine books. I quietly rejoice when each one comes out. I am always anticipating the next one. Elements of each book are blended with characters and technologies and tactics of the books that follow. I don’t consider this to be laziness on the author’s part. For me it makes for a familiar environment that provides a solid context for the nail-biting tensions that arise in each successive novel.
Monteith changes up the game in his latest work. Instead of his rogue team attacking an evil regime for money, this time THEY are attacked, when a well-financed and well-trained team hijacks his flagship, the GOLIATH. In the unfamiliar territory of having to react to someone else, Pierre, Jake, Terry, and Dmitri, along with their crews, must figure out how to take back their ship before it commits some horrible crime...and they take the blame.
While not my favorite of the series, it still has plenty of action and features characters with plenty of heart. This latest installment further develops the characters and the identity of the mercenary fleet that has grown from one man in the debut ROGUE AVENGER. I feel like this book is a bridge between the previous ROGUE JUSTICE and whatever comes next (maybe ROGUE LIBERATOR?). The author appears to use this book to show us more interaction between some of the characters, strengthening their bond for whatever adventure they move to next.
As a stand-alone, this book might not impress, but if you are familiar with the characters and technology in the series, it is obvious that this is a building block towards something spectacular!
