Accidentally on Purpose #5

Girl Code: A Novel

Rate this book
When Tabitha and her best friend, Leslie, were young, they made a pact to never get involved with the same guy. That wasn't a problem for Tabitha, especially as far as Leo Pesciano was concerned. Tabitha hated the guy. It didn't matter that he was good looking and all of the other girls drooled over him, and Leslie had a big crush on him. He was obnoxious and loved to rile Tabitha up, but when she is faced with life-altering challenges, Leo becomes her protector and her friend.

There is a strong chemistry between them that Tabitha tries very hard to ignore, but Leo doesn't make it easy. After an explosive end to their friendship during their college years, more than nine years later they are reunited, and Tabitha is again resistant to the attraction she feels to Leo.

Time, distance, and new lives have come between Leslie and Tabitha over the years, and they rarely speak or see each other, but Tabitha tries to uphold the girl code they created when they were children. Her loyalty to her old friend is admirable, but will this same loyalty destroy her chance with the man who just may be the love of her life?

I really enjoyed reading this one, LD Davis is the queen of Angst and I love her writing voice.

Tabby is the nerdy girl at school, she has a best friend called Leslie and they have a code - Under no circumstances are they to engage in a physical or romantic relationship with each other's exes or love interests.

When they first meet Leo, Tabby isn't worried that Leslie calls dibs on him because she thinks he's an arrogant douche.

Leo ends up dating her best friend, but they also become close friends and get even closer when he saves her from a bad situation at a party. They soon figure out that they have intense chemistry but there is no way in hell Tabby would violate the girl code, she values her best friend and with her inattentive parents, she appreciates the support that Leslie gives her.

When Tabby and Leslie leave for different colleges, she not only has to say good bye to her BFF but also to Leo, who has become her second best friend. Talk about breaking hearts, I was literally gutted by this point but hey, gotta stick to the girl code.

After years apart, Leo is determined to get the girl he wants.

This book was hard to put down, I loved the push and pull and I loved the chemistry. I have some rants though and that was the fucking 'Girl Code' which got in the way of these two. Tabby and Leslie didn't really have a relationship after high school, they drifted apart and Leslie was a bit of a bitch to be honest so I don't know why Tabby was so hung up on it.

Then we discover that Leo has been hiding a big secret from Tabby and it was quite a whopper, I thought she forgave that omission of truth far too easily.

Although this book made me want to throw my kindle at the wall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it so 4 stars it is.

Note: There are appearances from characters in LD Davis previous books, but this is totally a stand alone story and is told in parallel to the others.

I wanted to DNF so many times until the sh*t hit the fan at 65%. But it did get much much better at that point on.

For over 50% of the book, I wondered if the author thought of a title and a concept and struggled to build a story around it. I just couldn't get myself invested because the best friend was almost non-existent to the point that Tabitha's devout adherence to this girl code agreed upon when they were 13yo seemed so flimsy, weak and downright inane.

If you want a book with a similar plot where the friendship is fully fleshed out making that girl code rule infallible, try Emily Giffin's debut novel Something Borrowed. I know the book is extremely polarizing but I think that's the whole point - there is no black and white when true love/men comes between friendships.

Going back to this book, a curve ball was thrown at the 68% mark and all of a sudden I'm thinking now is the best time to stick to that girl code considering the twist in the plot.

It also felt so similar to Tethered at the start given the history between the two main characters. But somehow I couldn't find myself invested in this couple. I felt like there wasn't enough connection there apart from their constant banter.

So I've been in a book slump for weeks everything I've picked up has taken me days to finish. This book however had me glued, LD Davis really knows how to write a great Angst story. One that has you going from smiling like a chester cat to making you want to smash your kindle to pieces in a matter of seconds, Which just so happens to be my type of book :)

Tabby and Leslie have been friends forever and as all friends do they have rules one of which is you never, no matter what date an ex of your best friends it's girl code 101 and it just so happens that Leslie has laid claim on Leo. But Leo and Tabby would never work anyway they hate each other. Tabby's the nerdy girl with the beautiful friend. Leo's the God like looking popular boy. They couldn't be more wrong for each other.

But one night of Leo playing knight in shining in Amour changes the dynamics of their friendship forever.

I've got to say I hated Leslie she was spiteful, selfish and the biggest bitch on the face of this planet. She clearly knew how much Leo and Tabby were meant to be together and she just stood in the middle and watched 2 of her best friends long for what they wanted and needed.

 photo Girlcodeteaserjpg_zps68b9f4dd.jpg

The book is set over 15 years and it's pure torture to watch these two come so close so many times only for the Girl Code to stand in the way.

As all fantastic stories go as the couple finally get together theres a big secret being kept by Leo. Now to me this is absolutely F*ing huge. And this is where the rating gets dropped because she let him off to easy, for me he'd be grovelling for the rest of his bloody life for keeping this whopper to himself and the way Tabby found out had me seething, but hey I'll let you guys be the judge.

“I’ll always want you,” I whisper to him. “I’ll never get enough of you.” “You will always have me,” he promised. “amore mio, la mia vita.” My love, my life.

So all in all another great book from this author!!

Once again thank you Twinnie for the buddy Read.

Five stars for Leo, f*ck girl code!

It's no surprise when I say I'm a sucker for a type, Leo had me putty in his hands from the start, kicked his arse in the middle but love him all the way. How I felt about Tab? Hindsight, that stupid code would be tossed out the window but that doesn't make for a gripping read.
This story doesn't just focus on the here and now, it evolves.
Girl code declaration? If I was Tab, I would have said f*ck that.

The relationship between Leo,Tab and Leslie started in Grad school, Leo tormented Tab to point of her thinking he didn't like her. She was a girl who didn't think she'd be noticed. She's overweight and overshadowed by her parents attention with her brother. (Arseholes)
Her best friend (Leslie) has it all, Leo,looks, outgoing happy go lucky persona, and always right at her side.....yeh right

I don't know if I was blinded cuz I got all gooey with Leo but in my opinion he had a thing for Tab from the word go, he gave her so many hints. He never failed to protect her....

I know they where young, and that chuffing girl code made sense at that age but "hello" it took these two a long time to get over it!

The story tended to move forward in sections for me, I wanted it all but I got block snippets that didn't give me enough reason to go all ape shit over "that part" but I can't deny I echo shouted "Boom bitch" behind you girl x

A great read I loved it.

DNF 75%

That’s it, I’m done! I just can’t take any more. This is one of the most annoyingly frustrating books I’ve read in a long time. I honestly don’t understand the heroine’s thought processes. They make no sense to me and I honestly don’t think they made much sense to the author either considering how many reviewers felt the same as me. THEN once the heroine seemingly pulls her head out of her butt around 60% (but she really doesn’t), there’s a plot twist that’s so contrived to pull the couple apart that I’m just so over all the ridiculousness. I rarely rate books I don’t finish but this story drove me soooo beyond crazy that I just couldn’t stop myself from giving it a 1 Star. Thank heavens I was able to return it!

One thing is for sure, LD DAVIS knows how to write angst. She is a pro at taking the reader on an emotional roller-coaster. She will drag your heart through the shredder. She will rip it out of your chest tear it up making you *feel* gutted. But she will also gently, and with care, repair the damage and put those broken pieces together again and place them back into your gaping hole of a chest.

This is the 6th book of Ms. Davis’s I have read. Yes, you read that correctly, she is an automatic 1click author for me. Her writing is eloquent, fluid, and captivating. She develops characters and plots that are so life-like you forget you are not living alongside your friends but instead reading a book.
Girl Code:
I do solemnly promise to never, ever date, make out with, or love any guy that my best friend has dated, made out with or fallen in love with. This will not be difficult for me, because I value our friendship much more than I will ever value your sloppy seconds.
~Tabitha & Leslie~

Tabitha (Tacky) and Leslie swore this code to each other when they were young teenagers. Tabitha was not the girl who typically gained boys attention. She was not the girl with the “rockin’ hot” body - that was Leslie. For Tabitha I don’t think she ever thought twice about the pact. She was always self conscious about her body and never thought she was beautiful or worthy of the same types of boys Leslie was. So it was easy to keep the code, because if a boy asked her out that had ever dated, held hands or kissed Leslie, her self-concept was so skewed she was unable to see that she deserved to go out with him.
”I don’t know why you would believe you’re not worth it. –“ Leo’s soft voice washed over me as he firmly pushed me back into the truck, “but you are. Just let me be your hero for the night. You can thank me later.”

Tabitha had known Leo since early middle school. Living by him, she had noticed him often. It wasn’t until he moved from Catholic school to her local high school that they began talking, bickering, arguing, or as us adults call it flirting. At her young age, Tabitha didn’t understand though that what she was feeling for Leo was a crush. She mistook those irritated feelings as “strong dislike” and allowed her best friend, Leslie to swoop in and stake claim. Thereby enacting the Girl Code!
“Oh, Tacky,” he said, releasing my hand and wrapping an arm around my waist. “One day you will appreciate my enticing body.”

Many years later, and after several life altering incidents, Tabitha is smacked in the face with that damn Girl Code and Leo. I wanted to rip the hair out of her head. She spent so much time fretting over this damn, stupid code, that she wasted the time she could have spent having a beautiful, wonderful life. (Perhaps that says more about me than her.) Her loyalty was astounding, even after the years of separation with her “girl”. I don’t have to think twice if I would hold the code that long.
“It’s hard to fight for the one you love while you’re with him, but it will be so much harder without him.”

And Leo, I absolutely adored him. He had such an endearing personality, he was adorably funny, protective and loving, and yet he held some degree of culpability in the situation.

I also enjoyed reading bits and pieces about the AOP gang. No, you don’t have to have read those books before you read this one, but those who have, will appreciate getting a little more of their story.

Highly recommend this 5 Star read!

3 Very Frustrating Stars!
First off I am proud to say that I did not launch my kindle. lol
Second thing is I blame Leo for this whole damn shit storm that is up in this book! Stupid 15 year old man/boy!

Tabitha and Leslie are best friends and make a pack when they are teenagers.

I do solemnly promise to never, ever date, make out with, or love any guy that my best friend has dated, made out with, or fallen in love with. This will not be difficult for me, because I value our friendship much more than I will ever value your sloppy seconds. ~Tabitha & Leslie~ Girl Code

Tabitha sticks to this code like its life or death. The girl can't be with anyone because Leslie has either went out on one date with them or something. It was a bit much. I kind of thought Leslie sucked when it came down to the code.

Leo walks into high school one day and Leslie sees him and instantly throws the code out to Tabitha saying she seen him first. Tabitha could care less because she can't stand Leo. So she says. Ha!

Right off the bat I could tell that Leo only had eyes for Tabitha. WHY he went out with Leslie is beyond me. I still after the ending did not understand WHY!

One night something happens and Leo comes in and rescues Tabitha.

“I don’t know why you would believe that you’re not worth it— ” Leo’s soft voice washed over me as he firmly pushed me back into the truck, “— but you are. Just let me be your hero for the night. You can thank me later.”

After that Tabitha starts seeing Leo has her second best friend.

Of course through out high school Leo and Leslie break up and make up. But in the end they are broke up.

More than half of the book Leo and Tabitha are apart when they both know damn well they should be together. But that stupid girl code was all Tabitha could think about. Even after nine years and she never talked to Leslie any more she still stuck to the stupid ass code.

Leo wanted to follow Tabitha to the same college. Tabitha refused!

“I love you,” Leo whispered, his lips centimeters from mine. “I’ve always loved you and I can’t fucking ignore it anymore. I want to be with you, Tabitha. I’ll follow you to slower, lower Delaware.”

He just kept coming back for more and more. He tried everything to get Tabitha to be his. I felt sorry for him and her both,

“Your stupid girl code is fucking bullshit. I thought that you were strong and brave, but you’re obviously not strong or brave enough to love me in spite of that fucked- up code that Leslie uses against you, to keep you right where the fuck she wants you.

THEN when Leo finally gets her where he wants her something that damn near made me throw my kindle across the room happens. I defiantly wanted to choke that sexy ass Italian talking man!!! My mouth was wide open! I was screaming WTF Leo??? And WHY Leo WHY???

Any how for me to have finished this book it had to hold my attention and it did. Just be prepared to get angry while reading and you will defiantly drop the F bomb numerous times. lol

Word of advice to all sexy 15 year old boys. If you love a girl do NOT go out with her best friend!! Do Not kiss her best friend! Defiantly do Not have sex with her best friend. Stay the hell away from her best friend! Put your big boy undies on and go after the girl you love no matter how much she says she hates you! Haha!!

5 stars! Loved it! Wow! L.D. Davis is officially a master in my book at heart pounding love stories. I knew this was going to kick me in the gut and it did!

 photo feels_zpsgp5zpobs.gif

I absolutely devoured Girl Code and I could not put it down. It's about getting a second chance with the one that got away. Leo is to die for and I wanted him for myself! To make him my very own "perfect portable snack." I'm not going to lie, I wanted to choked Tabitha out for her stupid "Girl Code" pact and how strongly she felt about it. Sure, it sounds like a good idea when you're young and naive about life and love. When you don't realize that keeping an agreement like that may cause you to miss out on a chance at true love. When you have no idea that the heart wants what the heart wants and will not take no for an answer. Yeah, suddenly no such much. I also think that pact wasn't so much the issue as it was her own insecurities and willingness to go take a chance at happiness.

Highly recommend!

Well I'm kind of sad that this story is over. Girl Code is like a slow burn. I thought I would combust waiting for Leo and Tabitha to finally give in to all of those feelings building over time. I wanted to say, to hell with the "girl code." Before you know it I'm completely wrapped up in this story and then all hell breaks loose! Ugh. I wavered back and forth over who I was angry with - Leo or Tabitha and even Leslie! But what a great story that sucked me right in. I definitely didn't want it to end. It's a great read. I've come to really enjoy LD Davis' books. All of her stories put you through some emotional angst and just good stories that suck you in.

I absolutely adore LD Davis writing style, and this was no exception. Girl Code follows the story of Leo and Tabitha who we originally all but briefly meet in accidentally on purpose.
In all it's a good read but I felt at times that more could have have been made of the angsty side of Leo and tabithas complicated romance, complicated by Leo's ex girlfriend and tabithas best friend Lesley and the Girl Code they had between each other.
LD writes a great sexy scene but I think even though these are separate stories of the others characters on accidentally on purpose ( one of the greatest books ever written in my opinion ) it might be time to let them go.
3.5 stars for me just because I knew where this story was going .... More twists and turns next time.

4 Solid F**K the Girl Code Stars!

What another great book by L D Davis.

description

This author has a way of creating great characters, which are lovable, flawed and annoying! Her creative flare combines angst, with steamy sweetness through an intricate plot, bringing her characters to life.

A girl code made between two best friends, Tabitha (Tacky) and Leslie the summer before their freshman year. A Girl Code that Tabitha adhered to over and over again, giving up chance after chance to be with the one person who was her kindred soul. This is where you may feel like throwing your kindle in frustration and seriously want to slap Tabitha to knock some sense into her.

Then we have the charismatic, Leo Pesciano. He’s been Tacky’s second best friend from their young days. He’s the sexy alpha male, protective, loving and just adorable. Their relationship spans over many years. Leo’s not a saint, he’s made some pretty bad and frustrating decisions, but his character will still win you over.

Their journey is heart breaking at different points within their lives. There are family dramas, fragile relationships, witty banter and some steamy hot scenes.

So I seriously fell in love with this book. It was just so adorable. All about missed chances. Then 2nd and 3rd and 4th chances. A childhood love.

Now this is a standalone but I hate reading books in the wrong order. There are minor spoilers from the other books in this book but they are minor.

Leonardo Pesciano let me just say he is a book husband and not a book boyfriend. I mean he was swoon to the motherfucking swoon. He was funny. Romantic. Sexy. Kinda alpha. Spoke Italian I mean oh my gosh. And just so loveable. He fucked up once or twice but I could live with that.

Tabitha Tackard girl I adored you. I mean the way she stuck to the "girlcode" was admirable if not a little stupid, because for me Leslie wasn't worth losing out on a HEA with Leo. But Tabby man she was just so sweet and cute. She was sooooo loyal. And she defintley deserved a HEA. I won't lie she was stupid for not seeing what was staring her in the face but I did love how real she was. She was funny and honest and caring and kind. And a curvy girl which is a win haha.

A very enjoyable read and the perfect end to the series, I think it's the end. Lol

Did I like this book?

YES! Yes, yes!

This is what happens when you're looking for something trash: you find a tiny treasure.

There was only one problem: Leo PecorinoPesciano is taken. Or he would be surely mine.

And another problem: please don't speak Italian during sex, not in front of real Italian people.

BTW, this was a co-read with Livvie. (Our love for Leslie is infinite xD)

I love LD Davis and her ability to tell a tumultuous love story that spans decades.

I'd been hesitant to read this one because of the plot line, but finally gave in when it was, um, free.

Girl code when you're over 20 is stupid. Especially when you're not even friends anymore. Know where my bff from high school is? Me neither. Point is - it was just a ridiculous story. And the main character was annoying, self riotous and stupid.

I didn't even realize this was part of the accidentally on purpose series. Emmy is one of the best flawed heroines ever. And her story was so much better! This story was missing the flair, the pain and the intensity that the other books in the series has.

Two stars because I love the author but this book was a waste.

As much as I enjoyed this story it annoyed me just the same.

Girl Code is about the bond between Tabitha and Leslie two girls who are "best friends" that make a pact to never date the others ex.

I think this is an important code amongst friends whether between girls or guys. But there are degrees to this code. Making a pact like this when you are pre teens and super close and inseparable I feel shouldn't hold the same weight when your'e an adult. This brings up my MAJOR issue of annoyance with this book. Tabitha was doing her best to be so loyal to Leslie over the years when they weren't even friends like that still.Leslie DOES NOT and I believe did not even value their friendship.

This book has very minimal angst its more he said/she said gossip than anything. That also really annoyed me because for a good chunk of the book the characters are adults. But Tabitha for whatever reason is so concerned about hurting everyone else's feelings that she denies herself love and companionship. To me that made things drag and seem very juvenile.

Things I did enjoy was hearing about the characters from the Accidentally on Purpose series. I always enjoying hearing about Emma. Girl Code like all the books in the AOP series can be read as a standalone in my opinion. This book being my least favorite.

The rare times I'm in the mood for something angsty AF I know I can count on Davis to deliver. And she did.

We all know girl code is a real thing. Best friends can't date exes no matter how significant their relationship was or wasn't. Sorry fellas. Of course, exceptions can always be made. But girl code should only be enforced when it's entered into with the best intentions. Leo was right, Leslie only used it against Tabitha to keep her down. And it took Tabitha a long time to see it.

Leslie, Leo, and Tabitha were best friends at a young age even though Leo and Tabby bickered more than anything. Leo liked Tabby but she wasn't ready for those kinds of feelings yet so she pushed him into Leslie's arms forever making him off limits.

Many years pass and just when you think enough is enough Tabby is sacrificing her own happiness for this silly pact, BAM!, Davis throws us a curve ball and you're shaking your head at Leo. Stupid move, man.

This book wasn't perfect but it kept me turning the page I enjoyed it so much. I also loved having a different pov of what was going on with the love lives of the previous couples as well. I'm looking forward to diving in to Mayson's story. Well done!

LD Davis is my go to, when I need some angst. She did not skimp with Girl Code! I was up til the wee early morning hours reading. I CAN'T PUT THEM DOWN!!

Leo and Tabitha have been friends since they were kids. Leo once, dated her friend Lesile. Tabitha always had a secret crush on Leo, but made a pact with Lesile to never break the "Girl Code". I was cursing that stupid code, most of the book. It kind of made me crazy, how true Tabitha stayed to this code. After a major falling out between Leo and Tabitha they spend years apart. Once they finally reunite, she still fights her feelings. To be honest I wanted to strangle her a bit. The reason behind fighting him on his feelings, was really immature. But once things started to click, I felt better. Now don't think Leo is perfect in this scenario. He makes some major mistakes in their story.

If you are a fan of LD Davis and love a angsty, steamy, second chance romance, then this book is for you!

I liked this book. I enjoyed seeing Leo and Tabby's relationship from it's very beginning. I really liked the fact that we got equal time in whatever time of their lives we were located. Nothing was rushed. Everything had it's time and place.

What I did not enjoy was the girl code itself. I... I just couldn't get over the fact that Tabitha wasn't even friends with Leslie anymore and she was still clinging to the 'friendship' and not the man she loves. I know this was the whole problem and so I shouldn't complain about it but I just... I felt like slapping some sense into Tabby. It pissed me off. A LOT.

Otherwise... the book was ok. It wasn't anything super amazing, but it was nice. I hurt for Leo. I hurt for him so much because I liked him. Leo probalby had it worst of everyone.

Im so frustrated by Tabby up to the next level of frustration. Lol. But I still love it. I enjoy the story so much. The wait for this is worth it. Emmy's cameo had me irritated much. I don't know why I dislike her so much even though this isn't her story. My feelings for her are still the same maybe much worse because, just because. Lol. For those who loved Accidentally on Purpose series and Tethered, you'll definitel love this too. I highly recommend this.

Another Great Read- BRAB Online Book Club

If you've read Tethered and Accidentally on Purpose trilogy, you know the wonderful characters and the heat she brings to her books.

Tabitha Tackard and Leslie were best childhood friends. Leo Pesciano was Leslie's first love and friends with Tabitha. The "girl code", meant that if one friend is interested or had a relationship with a guy, he was off limits to the other for life. With that in mind, the author took us through all that teenage angst of love, disagreement, separation and understanding.

Leo's one and only true love was Tabitha and he fought repeatedly to get her to see that. Even though she was in love with him, she would not betray her friend. The author took us on an emotional roller coaster, which made this an intriguing read for me. The stories on the secondary characters were equally developed.

Did Leo and Tabitha get their HEA? You'll have to read the book to find out. You won't be disappointed.

The Girl Code was a pact that Tabitha and her selfish friend Leslie made when they were very young, I felt Leslie made the code because she was selfish , even when she realized that Leo's feelings for Tabitha. To me the code and the friendship was one-sided honored only by Tabitha to the benefit of Leslie. When characters make me want to smack the crap out of them the authors is doing a good job. I really enjoyed this book but the code I hated, would you stick to the code and sacrifice your happiness to a friend is no longer in your life? I wanted Tabitha to loose the code read it and see what happens.

I'm weird. Sometimes I go through a 'title' phase, like right now, how many books can I find and read with the same title ....Well, so far? Two books and a Twilight Fan Fiction. But still I'm surprised at how much I liked this little tale...And for the record I think 'Girl Code' should have a statue of limitation, it isn't murder, after all.
