‘Regency Protocol’ is a solid entry in what is shaping up to be a fantastic YA Science Fiction series. This third installment in the ‘Lightbound Saga’ starts at a seemingly relaxed pace with Maia at home in Appian wanting desperately to be back with her friends. But things change quickly when the Xifarians discover Maia’s link to the very thing they are searching for, and now it’s Maia herself they are hunting.
This is a breathtaking departure from the first two books in the series. The Initiative takes a backseat here as Maia is fleeing for her life across the fascinating, varied landscape of Tansi. We see a very real and immediate danger for Maia and her friends around every corner and a number of close calls that are both thrilling and threatening. Amidst this urgency, Maia is plagued with self-doubt and starts to question everything and everyone around her. This inner tension pushes Maia to the breaking point, quite literally, until she comes face to face with the terrifying reality of what has been sleeping inside herself…until now.
I just love where this series is going! Just when you think you know what to expect from the next book, everything gets turned on its head. The character of Maia has grown so much through this series and we really see her coming into her own. At the heart of it all we see her struggling with things that are very real for a girl her age. Bearing the weight of people’s hopes and expectations doesn’t come easily for her; we see the effects of that pressure and can empathize with the difficulty of her decisions. After the events in this book I think things will be *very* different going forward and am so anxious to learn what happens next! Very highly recommended read :)
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I find it hard to give this story more than a two star rating. I genuinely thought this was going to be a good series. I also find it hard to believe that someone can be that incredibly stupid, and fail at every twist and turn in this series. I just wish that authors would give more credibility to characters in their stories. This series is rapidly failing to reach suitable expectations. Do I purchase book four or not?
