Secret McQueen #10

A Wicked Secret: Secret McQueen, Book 10

Rate this book
Usually when your ex-husband dies, that’s the end of the story.

Unfortunately for Secret McQueen—FBI agent and werewolf queen—nothing could ever be that simple. Her ex Lucas Rain came back from the dead thanks to a spell gone wrong, and now he’s in trouble. Of course.

Secret is going to need to figure out her priorities and finally decide where she belongs in the East Coast werewolf pack. And she’s going to need to do it in the middle of the jungle, because Lucas has gotten himself entangled with a South American werewolf pack, and his life is on the line.

Now Secret, her new demon partner Harry, and her ever-patient husband Desmond, must work together to get Lucas back in one piece.

Because nothing saves a strained marriage quite like an unplanned vacation with a body-snatching demon, and your once-dead ex in the mix, right?

About the author

Sierra Dean

Sierra Dean is a reformed historian. She was born and raised in the Canadian prairies and is allowed annual exit visas in order to continue her quest of steadily conquering the world one city at a time. Making the best of the cold Canadian winters, Sierra indulges in her less global interests: drinking too much tea and writing urban fantasy.

Ever since she was a young girl she has loved the idea of the supernatural coexisting with the mundane. As an adult, however, the idea evolved from the notion of fairies in flower beds, to imagining that the rugged-looking guy at the garage might secretly be a werewolf. She has used her overactive imagination to create her own version of the world, where vampire, werewolves, fairies, gods and monsters all walk among us, and she’ll continue to travel as much as possible until she finds it for real.

She’s also a book lover (of course!), obsessive collector of OPI nailpolish and the owner of way too many pairs of shoes.

I was surprised last year when Ms. Dean released a new book in a series that I’d thought was finished. I had already moved on to Secret’s sister Genie’s series and was content with random cameos by beloved characters. Then I read Secret Lives and reconnected with Secret, Desmond and crew. So I was more than ready for more books in this world.

I’ve been in kind of a book funk for awhile and A Wicked Secret was exactly what I needed to kick start my reading week. This is an exciting, edge of your seat read from the first page right up until the moment this author leaves readers with a big, fat question mark with the last sentence. I loved it.

When Secret and Desmond get word that Lucas, who is back from the dead and off the grid on a sabbatical, has been taken captive by the Werewolf King in Peru, they immediately fly out to rescue him. Their only backup is Harry, Secret’s demon partner and a local FBI agent. Thus begins a wild, wicked adventure in the jungles of Peru where Secret and crew are up against a madman on a power trip who has given them an impossible task to complete before they can get Lucas and head home.

I really enjoyed everything about this book. From the high intensity, edge of your seat action scenes, to being back in Secret’s head, to getting more Desmond and finally seeing some answers to important relationship questions that has been a tender spot between them. A lot happens to drive the new series arc forward, and I’m not sure what it will all mean for the future. I was surprised at some of the new developments, but excited that it will mean more Secret in the future.

Final grade- B+

It's been about 4 years since I read a book in this series, so it took me a minute to get back into the Secret-swing of things. It all came back quickly though and I read this in one sitting. I'm going to read book 11 sooner rather than later, but notice the series seems to have stalled there.

These books are so fun and comfortable. Will Secret make terrible decisions that put her in grave danger? Yes. Will her love life be trouble? Yes. Throw in a wild paranormal adventure and you’ve got a formula I love.

Secret and Desmond are still trying to work out the “new normal” of Secret, the ex-vampire ex-werewolf now human, mated up with the New York king of werewolves. Secret is still partnered up with Harry, a demon, and running down the “bad” demons despite her human status. Desmond is still leading the werewolves even though Lucas, the previous werewolf king and Secret’s ex-ish-husband has returned from the dead. Their life is complicated.

Lucas manages to complicate their life even more when he gets captured in another country and another werewolf king’s territory. What should be a “simple” ransom exchange ends up escalating rather quickly into a hunt through the jungle with Secret, Desmond, Harry, and their assigned local liaison running for their lives on the full moon. So much happens that it doesn’t even make it possible to give high level points, but when they leave the jungle (as we all expected, right?) there are some changes that we will address in the next book. I still really enjoy this series, even after the ending/re-starting business, which is more than I can say for other series I have barreled through.

Oh, how I love secret which is why at least once a month I would check Ms. Dean’s website or the Internet for the status on the release of book 10. And trust me it was worth the wait. Ms. Dean has such a way of capturing readers attention with her ability to paint a picture of her characters and their world. The emotional connection forged from her writing is extraordinary.

Not only does book 10 have some serious cliffhangers but it also gives some much needed answers into the mind of Secret. As usual, Secret is her own snarky, sarcastic, confident but insecure (yes it’s a oxymoron but describes Secret perfectly) self Who has the insane ability to get into trouble no matter where she goes. Book 10 picks up with one of our most loved/hated characters, Lucas. And of course, Secret can’t get into trouble without her crazy side kick, Harry.

I can’t express anymore thoughts without sharing some major spoilers so until next time.

It’s always a pleasure to see Secret McQueen with her bad character, average humour and scathing repartee.

In this tome she will go to save Lucas, of course she will be accompanied by Desmond, her husband and Harry her evil partner.

I’m not going to go into the details of the story but I liked walking in the Peruvian jungle, well ok we don’t walk around it’s Secret who does it but I liked this change of scenery.

I also liked the plot, the demonic side of Harry who appears to save everyone, the fact that Lucas comes back (yes he’s always been my little darling even if his relationship with Secret was doomed from the beginning), the fact that Lucas and Desmond are protective of Secret since she became human again.

And then there’s Camilla, the FBI agent living in Peru, who’s going to accompany them and prove to be a great help.

Desmond and Secret’s marital problems will be solved and Secret will finally understand that she can’t live away from her beautiful Appolo. Secret will also discover Harry’s true nature, she already knew he was a demon but she had never seen him in action. Now it’s done and let me tell you, he’s tearing it up…

This tome reads very fast, there’s action, it’s a McQueen Secret as I like them, even if this ending lets me predict the worst. I can’t wait to read the next book and see what Secret learns.

Sierra Dean to create an absolutely brilliant heroine, I always loved this series and the fact that she continues to write books I like very much.

Quick word: Secret McQueen is back in an adventure full of action and humor.

It’s the 10th installment in this series. Secret, Desmond, and Harry head to Peru to rescue Lucas, who has been kidnapped. Hmm, in the last book, it was Sig who had been kidnapped. The author still finds new characters to bring into the mix. I’ll keep reading.

Awesome Adventure!!!

This book had me from page one. All of the action was eagerly devoured. And I loved the banter and the humor. Harry is a fantastic addition to the cast of characters. I loved everything.
