Reef Libre: Cuba--The Last, Best Reefs in the World

Rate this book
Decades of isolation from tourism and development have left Cuba’s coral reefs among the most pristine in the world, an “exceptionalism” that stands in stark contrast to the island nation’s poverty and political situation. Famed diver/photographer Robert “Snorkel Bob” Wintner showcases these magnificent reefs with his astounding underwater images, while also capturing terrestrial life in the cities and villages of the island nation.

Reef Libre is not a travelogue, but asks the big questions after a lifetime of isolation—can Cuba’s reefs still thrive? Nearly 400 stills, a compelling narrative, and a DVD capture this delicate time in reef history. Reef The Movie is a mini-documentary which encompasses this pivotal moment—from the streets to the reefs.

Robert Wintner in his new book, “Reef Libre” published by Taylor Trade Publishing gives us Cuba the Last, Best Reefs in the World.

From the back cover: Cuba reefs host apex predators and coral cover at optimal levels. While Cuban reef vitality may be linked to economic default and no shoreline development, no agricultural pesticides or fertilizers and limited human population growth, the Castro regime is aggressively developing its reef potential.

Seas to the south are now 100% shark protected.

Most Cuba travelogues advise “getting off the beaten path,” but Reef Libre examines that path, to see where it might lead as things change. Will Cuba reefs remain protected? Or is this perilous age of natural decline a last chance to see a healthy reef system?

Robert Wintner and the Snorkel Bob Jardines de la Reina Expedition herein provide narrative insight with photos and video. First stop is the baseline: Havana urban density. Down south at Cayo Largo, reef collapse seems imminent with 600 guests changing daily, and the phosphate-laden laundry water flowing directly to the deep blue sea. Will Cuba’s Ministry of Tourism step up with the Jardines de la Reina paradigm? Rising from the Golfo de Ana María, Jardines is a thousand square miles of mangrove estuary, for ages compromised by constant extraction of its biggest predators, taken as food. Protected, it now rises on the world reef stage.

A DVD comes with the book in a paper sleeve glued to the inside cover. Reef Libre, the movie, runs about an hour.

I have never had the opportunity to visit Cuba. After experiencing “Reef Libre” I feel as if I have been there. This is a well-done, beautiful showcase of a precious island. Mr. Wintner has given us more than a travelogue or documentary of Cuba I feel that he has given us the ability to experience it. Mr. Wintner starts us off with stories and pictures of the land of Cuba. Then he takes us underwater. These are the most beautiful pictures, I think, that have ever been placed into any book. I think they even rival going to an Aquarium. If you have any interest in Cuba then this is the book that you need to read. I also think that this book would make a great gift to give to friends and family if they have any interest in Cuba as well.

Reef Libre
CUBA The Last, Best Reefs in the World
By Robert Wintner

Political forces have kept Cuba's waters and reef habitats relatively safe over the years from tourists, economic development, and the destructive aquarium trade. But this protected world may soon be threatened as barriers to Cuba are dropped.

Reef Libre explores the untamed beauty that lies beneath the surface of the sea while examining the Cuban culture and the potential changes that may be coming as travel restrictions are lifted.

Unlike most of the world's reef systems Cuba's are alive and thriving with an abundant and vast variety of species coexisting within this self-sustaining environment. The aquarium trade has decimated most of world's reefs as "collectors" harvest species that are vital to the health and vitality of these fragile ecosystems.

The book is filled with photos of this Cuban excursion from both land and sea. Much of the land focus is Havana - the life style, the people, and the political ideologies that have shaped this land isolated from industrialization and capitalistic greed.

But the true beauty comes from the sea - images most will never see for themselves are brought vividly to life. Vibrant colors, graceful artistry that no artist's brush could ever create.

But this beauty and vibrance lies not only on the pages of this book as there is an included DVD Reef Libre The Movie. Much that can be found within this book can be seen on this DVD, but where the book offers still images the DVD captures the reef as it lives. We are brought into the very essence of the life of the reef. With over 45 minutes of video one can almost feel as if one is actually there. To experience such beauty one can only be grateful to the author, Robert Wintner and his team for allowing us to take part in the experience.

This set would make a lovely gift - perfect for the armchair world traveler, the ocean aficionado, or anyone with even a passing interest in Cuba.

I was provided a copy of this book through iRead Book Tours in exchange for my honest review.

Reef Libre is a gorgeously illustrated book of full-size aquatic pictures of life within the ocean, plus photos of other interesting key areas of Cuba. The photos and text illustrate the lifestyles and occupations of the people who live there. Additionally, there are many scenes, structures, and artwork portrayed in these two hundred and sixty six high quality, colorful pages. Discover amazing under the water life of sea plants, coral reefs, and fish of all manner in a brilliant way!

Cuba is one of the few places ocean life and coral reefs are protected by law. Many types of fish, plus, the
coral reefs - which protect them - are becoming near extinct because of the Aquarium trade worldwide. Many other challenges and information Cuba is faced with are recounted in a very informative way.

The accompanying DVD contains high quality, clear, outstanding, underwater and other scenic pictures. There are many close up shots of all the underwater vegetation and sea life... Even the more aggressive fish seem unafraid of having a human and camera so close. This hour long DVD, (unfortunately I received a defective one so I only got to watch twenty minutes of it... which was an amazing twenty minutes!)will surely delight any age group!

The only problem I had with any of it, was the slightly repetitive information and the Book was slightly too "wordy". As for the DVD, it was somewhat annoying as the co-partner/narrator, constantly added Snorkel F Bob's name after almost every comment. It gave it slightly amateurish impression for those listening.

Would I recommend this Book and DVD combination? Absolutely! It is great for one's own use, and would make a lovely gift for anyone!

I was sent this book an DVD in exchange for an HONEST review, of which I have given.

About the Book:
Decades of isolation from tourism and development have left Cuba's coral reefs among the most pristine in the world, an exceptional-ism that stands in stark contrast to the island nation's poverty and political oppression. Famed diver/photographer Robert Snorkel Bob Wintner showcases these magnificent reefs with his astounding underwater images, while also capturing terrestrial life in the cities and villages of the island nation.

My Review:
Going to a foreign land is too exotic for my family. We want to go but yet most of the time it is more than a little intimidating. Cuba is a land that is in our country's history and has been for a very long time. Cuba has some really rich food, history and culture but what it is most known for is it's amazing coral reefs and beautiful ocean life.

Reef Libre, is the perfect coffee table book. My family and I love coffee table book because it is a great conversation starter but it also teaches my children about tons of different subjects and as a homeschool mom, I am always looking for an idea, situation or book in this case to teach them "something".

With full color photography the author takes you on a virtual field trip or tour through some of Cuba's most amazing delights. He speaks throughout the book as if he is talking directly to you. I enjoyed reading the book and learning more about this delightful land and my family enjoyed the pictures. We plan on displaying this beautiful book on our coffee table and sharing it with family and friends.

**Disclosure** This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from the author.

First and foremost, if it has to do with fish – I’m there. Back in high school, a very close friend introduced me to fish and I have been hooked ever since. They are so calm and soothing to one’s soul. I used to sit in my friend’s fish store after school and just sit on the floor, surrounded by tanks of fish. I love fish.

Reef Libre is more than just fish. I mean, don’t get me wrong, the amazing creatures and pictures within this book are majestic. I love just sitting and looking at the images. I try to share my love for fish with my children but they don’t find the same joy as I do being able to stare at an image of glorious salt water fish and coral reefs.

I loved that Reef Libre wasn’t just images. It wasn’t just a picture and “here is a picture of xyz”. The book is a story. It is the story of traveling to Cuba and getting the images. It’s the diving. It’s the place.

Yes, there are tons of pictures and he does caption them but they are fun captions that go with the story.

The accompanying DVD was just as amazing as the book.

The DVD is about an hour long and magnificent footage of Cuba as well as the coral reef and the inhabitants of the reef. The DVD is like a story as well and gives more information about the reef and the fish. It is a great accompaniment to the book.

I know people who would love this book and I am sure there are others who would enjoy it as much as I did!

This is a beautiful coffee table quality book. The front cover image displays a beautiful yellow fish and is one of the most striking images in the book. This book isn’t just about the beautiful Cuban reefs though. It also contains many images of Cuba and the residents who live there. It provides a detailed history of the land and the impacts that US relations have had on the land, sea and inhabitants there. The author provides extensive information on the conservation efforts in Cuba and how the lack of tourism has allowed Cuba to maintain spectacular sights in deep contrast to tourist heavy reefs located in his home state of Hawaii.

It is equal parts beauty and history, which makes for a very interesting read with incredible images that make it feel a bit like a very complex travel guide. The book includes a DVD, which brings the images in the book to life. The tone of the movie is quite laid back, told in a conversational way that is both accessible and interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and watching the accompanying film.

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of REEF LIBRE from Robert Wintner in exchange for an honest review.

It was my pleasure to be able to read REEF LIBRE and view the DVD included with this book.

The photography in the book was of such an incredible quality and so realistic that at times I felt like I was swimming the reefs myself. I was able to lose myself in the book’s images and found myself leafing back through it over and over.

Reading REEF LIBRE and watching the DVD was very educational and I enjoyed sharing the photos with my family as I was reading through this book.

REEF LIBRE is a book that I will treasure for years to come and it will hold an exclusive position among my collection to be passed along to future generations.

It is with a great deal of satisfaction that I give REEF LIBRE five steaming hot cups of Room With Books coffee.

I love anything to do with the water and this book is full of info on the reefs of Cuba, the cities and people, and information about their culture. I loved learning about the people and places of Cuba through this book, and loved the beautiful photos of the people and the sea.

The DVD that comes with the book was wonderful. This would make a great gift and also a great book to have out on your coffee table. Anyone interested in Cuba and/or it’s history, reefs, the sea etc. would really appreciate this book. It’s one you can look at over and over and also watch the DVD from time to time.

My family and I love books that are educational and make us think. Reef Libre is such a book. With nearly 400 photos, this 11 X 9-inch hardcover book is beautiful and perfect as a coffee-table book that will trigger good discussions with whomever it is shared.

I don't know much about marine life and I have done little snorkeling, but because I love to learn I was fascinated by what I discovered reading this book. Did you know that sharks are key to reef recovery? No sharks and the reefs are in trouble. Wintner and his crew dived into shark-infested waters filming and taking pics and gaining a whole new level of respect for these much-maligned creatures. I loved reading about his encounters with the sharks and his explanation of shark behavior, how the sharks would body check to see if the divers had a pulse and were low-risk food to then backing off when they were pushed back by the divers indicating that they were not lunch!

The photos are just simply stunning. They are also accompanied by humorous captions, making me see these different fish species with new eyes. From the very tiny to the apex predators, the captions and text emphasized how diverse and beautiful these animals are.

It's obvious in his writing that Wintner loves marine life and is dedicated to bringing awareness of the destruction of coral reefs and fish life, therefore advocating a ban on the aquarium trade. I've seen enough IMAX and other documentaries to know that any imbalance on our Earth's ecosystem is ultimately detrimental to our own lives.

I also enjoyed very much how the country of Cuba was highlighted in this book, from its people to its art and cultural diversity and resilience. I have been to Cuba several times. Being Canadian, Cuba is a tourist destination the helps us escape our cold winters. But it was my stay with a poor Cuban family and living with them for two weeks that truly made me understand what it's like to be under Communist regime.

The 1-hour DVD that accompanies this book is a live depiction of what is in the book. It is narrated by Wintner and his diving partner Matt and it's evident by their camaraderie they have been doing this together for awhile. We watched the DVD as a family, my young teen kids enjoyed it but much of the commentary went over their heads. Yes, this book and DVD are educational but also very political. Wintner has strong views on certain organizations and he does not sugar coat his feelings.

Overall, Reef Libre succeeds in touching us with the beauty of marine life and the importance of its preservation. The protection from governments does make a difference in this preservation as seen by the thriving reefs in Cuba, unlike anywhere else in the world. However, consumer awareness does play a role and if people knew how devastating to ocean nature is the catching of wildlife simply for the pleasure of keeping a tank, then perhaps the aquarium trade would diminish or disappear altogether. After reading this book, I will do my part in letting my friends know not to support the aquarium trade.

Note: This book contains some profanity (f-words and some crude language).

Reef Libre: Cuba-The Last, Best Reefs in the World by Robert Wintner highlights the pristine and ecologically healthy and stable coral reefs of Cuba and begs the question "What will happen to them when tourism returns to Cuba?" The beautiful hardcover coffee table book includes a DVD. It is highly recommended.

The 400 still photos in the book are varied and cover the amazing aquatic life around the reef, as well as photos of life in the cities and villages on Cuba. Winter, known as Snorkel Bob, has written Reef Libre as a tribute to Cuba's pristine coral reefs and the incredible diversity they contain. Cuba's coral reefs have benefited from Cuba's isolation from tourism and the aquarium trade. They are an ecological wonder and the biodiversity is evident. Wintner makes his case in the text that we need to help Cuba keep their coral reef as a national treasure and protect it from being ruined simply for economic gain. That is a tough battle for a poverty stricken country.

Reef Libre was not written as a travelogue, although it does serve that purpose with the wide variety of photos not of the reef and the marine life. It is organized in the following chapters:
Reef Libre; Cayo Largo; Cuba Hoy; Jardines De La Reina; Tengo Dos; Night in Havana!; Political Reefs; Are You Now or Have You Ever Been...; The Older Man and The Sea; Finito, For Now; About the Cover; About the Author; Index. (As is my wont, I'm always thrilled to see an index.)

The text in the book and the dialogue in the DVD are written/spoken in a conversational style, although the continuity is a bit disjointed at times. While the goal is to showcase what Cuba has done right, it is also a dire warning about what can happen if this ecological wonder is allowed to be destroyed for economic gain. Right now the aquarium trade is nonexistant there. It could devastate the ecology if it is allowed.

While the book is very nice, you will want to watch the DVD, trust me on that fact. The YouTube video of Reef Libre will give you a small taste of the DVD. I watched the DVD with a young friend and he was entranced by the underwater scenes. He kept asking "Is that real!" The scenes are mesmerizing. All the marine life is labeled so you can see the name of the species of fish, etc. And did I mention the video is extraordinary? I will also admit right now that we were talking and oohing and awing over the photography so we missed much of the dialogue the first time through. And, I probably need to admit that we fast forwarded over the island scenes to get back to the underwater shots - except for the sea turtle beach on land - during the first viewing. (After viewing the DVD later, the dialogue is very similar to the text in the book and contains the same message and warning.)

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book for review purposes.

(Hardback Edition)

I dearly wish I had the proper words in order to express how much I enjoyed this work of nonfiction. A book that is beyond stunning and well educating to the point that I have learned so much more than I could have ever hoped about both the reefs of Cuba as well as the errors that have been made in the reefs of Hawaii. I certainly was sadden to learn the details of the damages that humanity has caused for profit to the Hawaiian reefs and yet now I have an understanding of what actions should be taken by the United States government to preserve what remains of the reefs.

The book itself is filled with detailed information about Cuba's reefs in a way that was fun to discover as well as to gain new knowledge about what daily life is like under the sea. I seriously must credit the Cuban government for taking the necessary actions to preserve the magical life of under the sea. It is such these actions that will continue to educate both the world and the daily public of what humanity needs to do in order to ensure the survival of both the reefs and lives beneath the ocean.

What I think I enjoyed the most about the book was receiving the first hand experience of how beautiful life generally is in the reefs of Cuba. It is colorful, vibrate and enriched with life that I did not even know existed. The author has done a wonderful job at capturing the heart of the reefs and I enjoyed this book so much that I will always cherish it.

As for the photography of this book it is brilliant and incomparable to anything that I have ever had the pleasure of reviewing. I have learned so much by examining each photo carefully and I feel like between both the writings of the author as well as the photography I have explored the reefs myself without ever having to leave the comforts of my own home. This book will certainly bring you to fall in love with the sea in a new and exciting light.

(DVD)
Like the book the dvd is equally as interesting and just as fascinating with vivid colors and education.

At the beginning we are introduced to a narration by both the author Bob and his close friend Matt. I really enjoyed the chemistry and the devotion of these two best friends. Both had a dedication and an enthusiasm for nature. Their humor brought to life the Cuban reef in a fun way that I was not expecting while still maintaining the importance of the reef.

What I liked the best about the dvd is it brought to life the many marine life within the depths at a much closer look than the book did. Of course the dvd is not just about under the sea, but instead the film also features life outside the water. So this film has much to offer the reader of the book as well as nature enthusiast such as myself.

In the end both the book and the dvd is highly recommended. I will cherish both the knowledge that I have learned in hopes that we too can begin to preserve our nature in away that the author has understood and presented to his readers.

Reef Libre by Robert Wintner approaches the world of aquatic life from an entirely new perspective. His book focuses on the unique reefs and ecosystem of Cuba – a reef system the author describes as the best in the world due to a lifetime of isolation from the outside world – and explores the question:

Can Cuba’s reefs continue to thrive now that the US is in the process of normalizing relations with this island nation, or will the changing political climate result in the return of mass tourism and the ultimate degradation of their underwater ecosystem?

The book is quite informative.

Readers who have an interest in marine life and environmental issues will find plenty of food for thought as Robert – a staunch conservationist – shares his insights and takes you on a visually stunning journey off the shores and through the coral reefs of Cuba.

As you might imagine, Reef Libre is filled with stunning, full-colored photographs of sharks and lionfishes and sea turtles and other aquatic delights. What you might not expect is that the book contains plenty of photographs of Cuba as well – giving readers a rarely seen historic and intimate glimpse into the lives of our neighbors.

Reef Libre comes with another surprise: an hour-long DVD entitled Reef Libre, The Movie, which you’ll find inside a plastic sleeve inside the front cover.

As you watch this DVD, you’ll feel like you’re seeing the sights up close and personal – with the benefit of a narrator providing insights along the way!

Whether you are interested in learning more about Cuba, its reefs, and the ecological issues it now faces, or are looking for a visually stunning coffee book to display and entertain guests with, Reef Libre fills the bill.

How could Communism lead to redemption in nature?

This interesting question whet my appetite for the explanation Mr. Wintner outlines in this book. Having snorkled and studied marine biology around the world, I was excited to see Robert Wintner's book about Cuba. Cuba has been on my "to-do" list as a project for a documentary, as I am a documentary photographer. This book serves both as a travelogue and educator in the field of marine biology, Cuban politics and lifestyle of the Cuban people today. He also wrote about local tourism and the devastation being caused in other parts of the world due to the destructive nature of the aquarium trade. I enjoyed both the images of Havana viejo as well as the many full-page layouts of the different fish species and corals found in the Cuban reef system.

"With uncompromised reef ecosystems, marginal acidification, limited coral bleaching, no hideous effluent and no fishing pressure - including no electronic fish-finders that devastate species in other places - Cuba reefs will draw, and that draw will benefit the Cuban people."

The writing style was simple, informal English, written much, I suspect in the way Mr. Wintner would carry on a conversation. I felt that this did not detract from the book's message. I would recommend, however, (for future books) that the text be divided into two columns when on the same page as I found reading the long lines back and forth a little laborious.

The book came together with a DVD entitled "Reef Libre - The Movie". The dialogue was much the same as the book with excerpts from the book in the movie version. It was very interesting and I really enjoyed learning about fish species that I wasn't familiar with. The explanation about the lion fish infestation in the carribean was new to me.

I will be passing on this book and DVD to another snorkler who plans to return to Cuba and I am sure he will enjoy it as much as I did.

The pictures in this book are amazing. They are so beautiful. This book is about the reefs of Cuba. A DVD also comes with the book, and it is just amazing, not just the filming but also the way they explain the different species. They get up close and personal with the sea life. Between the book and video this could make me want to learn to swim. I would love to go to Cuba and see all the sites both above water and below.
This book and DVD are not just a bunch of pictures. You get history, you get different species, you also get to know how some species are almost extinct in some areas but are plentiful in Cuba because they are protected by law.
I personally was very interested in the story in the book, my Grand Daughter however was thrilled with the pictures in the book. Every time she comes she sets down with this book and just oohs and Ahs at the pictures. She also loves watching the DVD. I am thrilled with this book and it will have a place of honor in my living room for years to come. I learned not only tons of about the sea life featured int he book and video but also some about Cuba as well. The writing and narrating in the book and DVD are very informative and engaging. There is nothing about this book and DVD I do not love.
I would never have the courage to go swimming with the sharks or the crocs for that matter but am so glad Robert and his crew did. The pictures and video is so clear you can actually imagine your are there with them.

I received this product for free or at a discounted price in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

I had a completely different idea before I set out to read this book and watch the DVD. Although they are very informative, I was a little shocked, but pleasantly, by the music in the film. It is only background to the commentary, though, and goes with the Cuban feel of the entire set.

Both book and dvd are very informative. The book is one of those that my mom would put on her coffee table. I don’t know if that’s a thing anymore as I have four dogs and coffee tables get chewed on, but this is on a low bookcase. It is gorgeous and just flipping through anyone can enjoy the beautiful, breathtaking pictures.

The DVD commentary was a little more friendly than I imagined. Not technically in a bad way, just different. The crew is discussing the various ways the reefs can be killed or thrive, which I think is very important information, but how it was delivered did not totally mesh with me. The laid back attitude was what threw me off, I think. Again, it is fascinating but the commentary sometimes was not up to par with the important information that they were explaining.

The whole set is amazing though, really. I feel privileged to be able to review something that will hopefully help to make an impact on our children. I know my niece and especially my nephew would love this. Not only the DVD but the book too.

In short: Amazing book and DVD. Be prepared for Cuban music and colorful commentary.

Fascinating!
Though while watching the DVD, I often felt like I was back in school watching one of those films in science class. It was filled with the most interesting information about the reefs and Cuba, as well as had beautiful imagery, but it was a little boring.
The video and the book accompanied each other well. Most of the information in the book is in the film, but the book is a little more detailed. The photos are breathtaking in the book. I found myself lingering often.
The coral is the star though. So many different species of coral and in so many sizes and shapes. Frankly, the narrator said it best when he said the coral reef is 'Neptune's Artwork'. It couldn't be more true.
People who love fish, aquatic or ocean life will definitely want to get this. Even those travel lovers who have an eye on Cuba with enjoy it too. It has enough content in it to be great for tourism information!
All proceeds for the book and DVD are going to a coalition that aims at banning the aquarium trade, worldwide. For more info check out oceandoctor.org

I received a free copy of the book and DVD for an honest review.

Reef Libre looks like a coffee table book, full of beautiful pictures of ocean life, but it’s so much more! It was written by Snorkel Bob and is not just about his group’s trip to Cuba to photograph ocean life. It contains a lot of Cuban history and shows how they live today. It’s a lot different than what we know!

I learned a lot from this book and the DVD. I hadn’t thought about the effect of commercialism on such things as coral reefs until I read this book.

The DVD is a nice addition to the book. It has even more information and amazing videos of ocean life. You can tell that Snorkel Bob and his friend are not actors, but somehow it makes the DVD even better. It’s like watching something a friend put together…a friend who has incredible filming skills.

I definitely recommend this book and DVD for people of all ages. I can’t say enough about the photography. It’s amazing.

This was an interesting book and video. The pictures in this book are amazing and very interesting to view. I thought they were all very vivid and thought provoking. Both the book and the DVD were packed full of information about Cuba. This would be a good informational tool to teach kids what can happen if we all take a part in protecting our coral reefs. You can share this book with all the members of your family as it is suitable for all ages. I am not sure which I liked better the book or the DVD. Watching the DVD you felt as if you were snorkeling yourself. This book and video did give me a whole new look on Cuba. I did not know what I expected from this but it did pass those expectations. All in all an enjoyable experience in a book and DVD.
