A Lady Arianna Regency Mystery #7

A Swirl of Shadows: A Lady Arianna Regency Mystery, Book 7

Rate this book
A traumatic personal crisis has left Lady Arianna bedeviled by guilt and questioning whether she has lost her nerve. Her circle of friends can't seem to help rekindle her fire. Even a challenge from Lord Grentham, Britain's shadowy head spymaster, to undertake a vital mission to Russia in aid of her old friend, Tsar Alexander, fails to spark any interest . . . Until Grentham mentions that Arianna's half-brother has gone in her place and may be in mortal danger. Resentful of the minister's attempt to manipulate her emotions, she still refuses to be drawn back into the fray.

But when the murder of a mysterious Russian baroness in London entangles her friend Sophia in the byzantine intrigue surrounding a stolen Imperial medallion and a legendary curse that may topple the Tsar from his throne if it's not recovered, Arianna finds she can't turn her back on family and friends.

And so Arianna and Saybrook—along with Sophia—head off to St. Petersburg, where dangerous deceptions and duplicity swirl beneath the sumptuous splendor of the Imperial Court. An American adventuress, an old nemesis, a possible traitor within their own allies . . . Suspects abound—treachery is everywhere, and when her brother goes missing, Arianna know that for her to have any hope catching the cunning conspirators, she'll have to learn to trust herself again.

Lady Arianna is one of my all-time favourite series. Andrea Penrose is a fabulous author who never disappoints, and this book continued its streak as a terrific read!

This series combines a number of things I love in a book: first and foremost it has strong female characters. Mainly Lady Arianna, but also her friend Sophia, and Lord Saybrook's aunt are wonderful characters that are smart, capable and full of spunk - I love all of them!

These books also always deliver a highly entertaining bit of a history lesson along with whatever intrigue the characters are attempting to sort out. In this book we go to Russia during the height of intrigues and political machinations that Arianna, Saybrook and all their friends - including a few new characters - must figure out to once again save the world . . . really, just another day in the life for these people - no big deal!

Andrea Penrose really does write absolutely wonderful, engaging and well-crafted stories that I so enjoy reading! They are always interesting and easy to read but so addictive. It's a great day when a new Andrea Penrose book is available.

I loved every minute of this story, and hope that Penrose has more Lady Arianna books planned. They are a consistent favourite of mine and I will keep reading them as long as she is willing to write them.

I guess a series can end one of two ways: one that makes you want more and one that makes you feel like the book is closed. This final installment of the Lady Arianna series is the latter. I honestly thought book 6 was the end because Arianna’s pregnancy seems to stick a pin in her and Saybrook’s adventures. I think I would have been fine with that…their story didn’t need this final romp in Russia.

This first half of the book was a big slow and I didn’t quite understand the point of bringing some secondary characters into the story. The second half was better, with a lot of the action I’m used to in these books coming in the last 75 pages.

I wish Sandro was more of a presence here. He and Arianna spent the majority of the book sleuthing separately and the magic was always in them working together.

There seemed to be a few errors in the book, but it could have been because I was reading through Libby.

For love of chocolate

I like the growth for both characters as the develop greater trust in each other. I would recommend these books to anyone really. I like the chocolate theme that runs through the book. Anything chocolate will always capture my attention. I also like learning about history and how they lived lived. What I do not like is waiting for the next book!!

This is such a weird book and it ends so abruptly. I was hoping for more Saybrook-Arianna moments, but I have hope for the next!

Arianna has lost her baby. She didn't even know if she'd be able to conceive therefore it felt like a miracle. A very short lived miracle. A fortnight after their adventures in Paris she miscarried. The words of her friends and medical professionals fell on deaf ears when they told her it wasn't her fault. She gave Sandro hope of an heir and she failed him. She has lost her edge, her spark, her fire. She sits in darkened rooms claiming to be working on her book of recipes but really she is dwelling on her past, on her future, and on her letting Sandro down. Lord Grentham hopes to lure her out of her depression. Tsar Alexander has requested Arianna's help. A medallion has gone missing. But this is more than just a medallion, the Rurik Medallion is a talisman symbolizing a Tsar's right to rule Russia. If the Tsar doesn't have it with him for an upcoming event his reign will be cursed and he will be ousted. Yes, Arianna feels bad for the Tsar, but that doesn't mean she's going to drag herself far from home into the depths of a Russian winter. That is when Grentham plays his trump card. He thought she'd refuse so he sent her brother instead. She is furious. How could he send her innocent brother into the Byzantine bowels of Russian court intrigue!?! Especially once she learns that the Orlov family is still making a power play despite her killing whom she viewed was the worst of the lot. Still, Arianna needs peace and quiet, it's only when a Russian Baroness, Anna-Maria Gruzinsky, is brutally murdered with Arianna's name and address on a slip of paper in her reticule that Arianna decides she must go to Russia. Sandro and Sophie are obviously coming as well, and Grentham has saddled them with Arianna's old comrade Wolffy, as well as a new acquaintance, Major Prescott, who is half Russian and they might not be able to trust him. But Arianna feels a fire in her belly despite the cold surrounding her. She will keep the Tsar appeased, she will befriend his new religious guru Mrs. Schuyler, she will find the medallion, and she will keep the power structure stable in Russia in order to preserve Britain's most important alliance. But will the fire in her belly bring back her spark or do her actions bely the fact that her life is irreparably changed?

There's a trope in historical fiction that I don't much care for. That's when an active heroine blames herself for a miscarriage due to her lifestyle. In most fictional cases, sure, there is sometimes a direct cause and effect, and women do need to mourn, even fictional ones, but the blame game gets to be too much. My problem is that it's overused and, particularity in this case, Arianna's past medical history would indicate that she might not be able to carry a baby to term so it was more expected. Only time will tell if she can have a baby. Therefore I was kind of dreading an entire book about Arianna trying to find her spark, which of course she does, but thankfully because of the time lapse we join our heroine at the end of her deep mourning just in time for her to go to Russia more to prove to herself that she can than any other reason. Now THIS is why I loved this book. Russia! And all things you expect from a classic Russian tale, dubious rulers, dodgy mystics, deranged religious leaders, with more than a dusting of snow. Ah Russia. You are in my bones, literally, if it wasn't for Doctor Zhivago I wouldn't exist. Over the eighteen months or so I've been watching old Masterpiece Theatre series while I exercise. One of my favorite, hands down, was Anna Karenina . It brought the world of Russia to life the same way A Swirl of Shadows did. This felt like a great Russian classic and I never wanted it to end. Andrea Penrose captured St. Petersburg and it's court perfectly. I didn't realize until I got to the note at the end of the book that she had spent considerable time there. Well, it showed. After you read a lot of historical fiction you get a feeling as to who knows what they're talking about and who is passable with minimal research. Andrea Penrose knows what she's talking about. There's a verisimilitude that I haven't found in many writers, especially when if comes to capturing historical figures. And as for the medallion MacGuffin? Sure, it's note real, but it feels like it should be. The whole idea of it is very Russian, much like poisoning your enemies and killing ideologues. Mrs. Schuyler should be glad she got out when she could!

The lady Ariana books continue where chocolate and spying go hand in hand. We find Ariana mourning the loss of her baby due to a miscarriage. As her husband and friends try to help her; along comes a request from Tsar Alexander l pleading for her help to recoup a precious icon that could determine whether he remains on the throne of Russia or not. Initially Ariana wants no part but when she is told that her half brother has left to help, that changes everything. She just found about him and is not willing to lose him because she thinks he is a babe in the woods. Our heroine, Sandro and friends take off to help. This involves a young English major with Russian blood, a spiritualist that is probably not the real thing that Alexander relies on and old enemies. You can absolutely feel the cold air of Saint Petersburg and see the glitter and glitz that make up the Russian nobility and most of all the treachery that surrounds them and not knowing who is friend and who is not. I found this particular book to be a very fast read and very much enjoy the relationships between this group, we see old friends who have come back to help and discovering that all is not visible to who is evil and who is friend. This is a book that you do need to read the series. Otherwise you will not follow the twisted path that is set in front of you.

3.5 stars.

I was wondering how Arianna would continue physically after the news at the end of the previous book A Tangle of Serpents. I'm not sure I liked the solution though.

This time, Czar Alexander wants Arianna to come to St Petersburg to help him find a lost talisman and again, there are so many players and intrigues that they seem to trip over each other all the time. It does seem silly that Grentham uses Arianna and Saybrook for anything to do with foreign affairs and the fact that they are there whenever important events take place must be suspicious to everyone by now?

I have to say I envy Arianna's metabolism given the amount of chocolates she consumes! Given the interesting news at the end of the book, I am wondering where the author will take the series next. America perhaps?

Avid w

This novel started with our heroine being depressed because she had miscarried a child, an event she never expected to experience. The novel ended with another possible pregnancy. Let us hope that the author allows her and Saybrook the joy of becoming parents in the next novel! After all, Arianna does an excellent job of playing the airhead who suddenly becomes more than competent. Her half-brother, Richard enters the picture, and we see a side of Arianna that is unexpected. She's afraid that she can no longer function as a spy. She and the minister share similar temperament and fears, which is why she is the one who must speak with him about Sophia. Mrs. Schylur is an interesting addition to their group along with Wolf and Prescott. Returning to Russia and helping Tsar Alexander, the grandson of Catherine the Great helps many to heal and find love again or for the first time!

I like the characters and period. The story itself is fine but I did this as an audio book and the reader is just the worst ever. I listen to audiobooks frequently. This reader typically phrased things in too brief word groups, breaking with a pause before going on--You go ahead . . . she answered . . . I think I shall pay a visit to the mother empress' reception rooms . . . and see if I can gather any gossip from her crowds. . .

I can only listen to a chapter or two at a time and get a headache from trying to follow the conversation. Or it could be the lengthy and breathy pronunciation of 'chocolate' which happens way too often. Even worse, all the characters speak in that same strange pulsing manner. Yikes!

I am new to reading Andrea Penrose’s novels and found this series to be very intriguing and exciting at the very start of the series up to book6. I was very eager to continue each novel however, when I got to book 7 & 8, the excitement dwindled.

New, un-needed characters were brought in to the story and the story dragged on when it didn’t need to. Additionally, Ariana and Sandro, whom I loved in the novel, were barely working together. Their relationship and interactions fueled the excitement in the beginning and middle of the series and it was almost as if they were an afterthought. The ending of this book was a let down.

I love this series--not only for the great stories but for the nuanced, always growing characters and for the details of the period that are overlooked in contemporary history classes. I come away from each book feeling richer in my understanding of the Regency period and a deeper appreciation of human relations and the important values.

In this adventure, Arianna and friends play Who Do You Trust as they try to help Czar Alexander find his stolen medallion while treasonous intrigues to take the throne from in swirl like Russian snow around the winter palace.

Good Series of Stories

The lady Adrianna Mystery Stores are all great and best read in order so you can expand your experience with the characters and the progression the ongoing narrative . Very satisfying conclusion and even the possibility of future stories if the Author wishes. The other series from this author is also entertaining and enjoyable . Both are well worth your reading pleasure

Good but too short

The story is good and a decent follow-up to the previous book in the series. However, only 75% of this book is the actual tale. The rest is excerpts from previous books in the series or books on another couple in the same fictional world. I don't mind a plea from the author to purchase their books, but there is a limit. So 4 and not 5 stars.

Another Andrea Penrose gem......

I found myself thinking that this seemed more like Part 2 of the last Russian adventure than a new challenge for the Saybrooks and their growing circle of close friends. But it didn't take me long to get caught up in the action and twists that I do enjoy.

Well Written Spy Action!

A very good, fast paced spy story with Lady Arianna, Saybrook et all. Tsar Nicholas needs rescuing, and he has asked for help from Lady Arianna, and off they are to Russia. Given what is going on in the world, this was a very interesting read, with great characters.
I highly recommend! Thank you.

Fast, enjoyable read

Intrigue in beautiful, cold St Petersburg, Russia. Good cast of characters... but who to trust. While it can be read as a stand alone book, the series is good, especially if you enjoy books set in Recency England.

I'm getting tired of the series. Such a pity because it started quite well with some intriguing caracters. The more the series advances, the more the caracters blend into each other to become all the same. The male caracters are fading away to become only the testimonies of the ladies courage and intelligence... Boring...

Just a little fluff of historical mystery and thoroughly predictable but a nice break from the mayhem of the real world. The strong female leads are always ready to outdo the men even with the dash of romance.

Interesting and fun to have another setting. But the characters all went to Russia, so it really wasn't all that different. :-) I liked it a lot.

Man I loved this series but this one I did not like. This is just my personal preference: others may love it. But I already kind of hate the pregnancy trope and throw in the identity crisis and sudden personality change, and it is worse. She was grieving the miscarriage, so I get it, but it was not fun to read. And personally, I don't enjoy stories that center a woman's whole identity and story around fertility or motherhood. Again, personal preference. And then boom, she's immediately pregnant again? Felt weird and unrealistic.

The mystery wasn't as interesting this time either. If this is the last book, what a bummer way for the series to end! I hope more books are coming.
