Me he encontrado con un libro maravilloso.
Escrito maravillosamente y con unos personajes que me han enamorado, y una trama muy entretenida que desde el minuto uno ya te atrapa y es desenfrenada.
El mundo que nos encontramos es nuestro presente lo que pasa es que nuestra protagonista descubre que su madre ha desaparecido y que no es lo que creía que era. Aquí vamos a hablar de brujas, y son todas maravillosas.
Es un libro muy recomendado y además cierra una parte de la historia con lo que termina por ser perfecta.

Bajo el título de La guerra de las brujas, Edebé recoge las tres entregas de esta saga de la autora Maite Carranza. Los libros que la componen son: El clan de la loba, El desierto de hielo y La maldición de Odi; que en total suman 1012 páginas, sin el índice. Yo no sabía de la existencia de Maite Carranza ni de la fama de sus libros, pero terminé con este en mi bolsita de tela porque estaba a un precio muy asequible y porque quería leer algo temático para octubre. No revisé goodreads; hice uso de mi libre albedrío. Prefiero recargarme en la razón y no en la intuición. No es que el libro sea desastroso, pero quedé con la sensación de qué me debían algo (sensación que persiste) más cuando son contadas las ocasiones en las que leo una entrega tras otra.
Esta es una historia contemporánea de brujas. Trata de la guerra entre las Omar y las Odish, que a su vez son estirpes antagonistas. Ambas, desde tiempos inmemoriales han esperado la llegada de la elegida, para así ganar la guerra contra el rival y establecer la paz. La protagonista es la elegida, la cual está encarnada en Anaíd; una adolescente que, aunque inteligente es tímida e insegura.
En La guerra de las brujas, Maite Carranza crea un mundo femenino en el cual conviven la realidad y el mundo invisible. También, ella trae a los tiempos modernos la iconografía tradicional de las brujas, presentándose elementos como las típicas varitas mágicas, clanes, animalismo, totemismo, teriomorfismo, oráculos, nigromancia, aquelarres y jerarquías. Otro aspecto que me ha llamado la atención, es la introducción del mito para armar y sostener la historia y la genealogía de las estirpes y los clanes de brujas, el cual, a su vez, es alimentado por diferentes mitologías europeas. Y estos son los aciertos de la escritora. Sin embargo, esta obra no es sólida; y uno termina entendiendo cómo una buena estructura, un mundo y mitos bien elaborados, más una buena escritura, no hacen a una novela. Y el asunto aquí es que el libro carece de buen desarrollo de personajes, en cambio sobresalen párrafos y párrafos que cuentan mucho y no muestran nada, la autora da muchas explicaciones, es reiterativa. Tampoco tiene momentos emocionantes o de fuerte tensión, y no tiene imágenes potentes. Justo ahora, apenas dos días después de terminar la trilogía no tengo una sola imagen en mi cabeza.
Hasta la segunda entrega, El desierto de hielo, la trilogía se merecía tres estrellas, pero con La maldición de Odi, todo se fue al piso. Se hicieron más evidentes las carencias de la novela; Anaíd tiene comportamientos que no son consecuentes con el perfil mostrado en la primera entrega, párrafos maquillados que ralentizaron el avance de la novela y le quitaron el poco ritmo que traía. Adicional a esto, imagino que Maite Carranza quiso darle giros inesperados que desembocaron en acontecimientos y respuestas forzadas. Con la última entrega me sentí penando.
Con las buenas valoraciones que tiene esta trilogía, dudo mucho que yo le haga daño. En todo caso, no es mi intención, porque percibo que la escritora tiene con qué crecer. Me siento satisfecha de la lectura, gracias a que esta se prestó para identificar aspectos claves que hacen a un buen libro, pero esto no hace de La guerra de las brujas una trilogía que quiera recomendar -aunque si de algo sirve, para mí la segunda entrega es la mejor- seguro que hay mejores historias de brujas y de fantasía para leer.

Retomo esta trilogía 10 años después y al volver a leer esta historia recordaba muchos de los pasajes por lo que es buena señal de que me dejó algo en la memoria.
Es una novela juvenil muy entretenida, al estilo Harry Potter, y con un giro final muy bien hecho.

4’5/5 en realidad.
Me ha encantado la trilogía por completo. El mundo que Maite Carranza ha creado está muy bien estructurado y argumentado. La trama va avanzando y complicándose con cada libro, y vemos una clara evolución de los personajes.
Si bien es cierto que la protagonista tiene un comportamiento muy infantil en más de una ocasión, está muy bien justificado porque, en mi opinión, se ha comportado como cualquier chica de 14 años, época en la que todos los sentimientos y sensaciones se magnifican muchísimo y que no es fácil para todo el mundo.
Me ha dejado muy buen sabor de boca, y espero poder leer algo más de la autora pronto.

Me a gustado mucho este libro. Puede que caiga en unos cuantos tópicos pero para mi gusto a sido una buena bocanada de aire fresco.
El libro nos habla sobre Anaid una niña de 14 años feucha y un poco antisocial. Después de una mala noche Anaid despierta sobresalta, tiene un mal presentimiento, así que decide ir a ver si su madre Selene se encuantra bien. Cuando llega a la habitación no hay nadie y se encuentra la ventana abierta, ¿donde esta su madre? ¿donde habrá ido sin avisarla? ¿estará bien? Así que decide ir al bosque, donde hace un año por desgracia murió su abuela y bueno poco a poco nos va sumergiendo en la historia.
El libro en realidad nos habla sobre brujas, aun que no lo parezca por mi mini sinopsis rápida xD y de una profecía que no os quiere hablar mucho de ella por que os destriparía gran parte del libro.
Personajes:
Anaid no me gusto este personaje... no tienes las ideas claras y piensa muchísimo mas en sus problemas (adolescentes como aspecto, amigos...) que en su madre. Me pareció un personaje muy egoísta aun que claro tiene 14 años... Tampoco me gusto que no para de pensar en lo desgraciada y fea que es, ¡esta chiquilla necesita un subidon de autoestima!
Selene no se conoce mucho de este personaje. Ni fu ni fa.
Demeter, la abuela de Anaid, sale poco pero lo poco que sale me gusto mucho.
El clan de la loba en general todas me gustaron aun que destacaria a Karen.
Otros clanes salen poco, lo justo para saber que existen y ayudar un poco a Anaid.
Valeria y Clodia me gustaron estos personajes aun que Clodia puede ser un poco irritante.
En general es una trilogía que tiene muy buena pinta el problema es que este primer libro peca de introductorio.
El final no es que fuese precipitado pero sentí como que no sabia como hacer que acabara bien y lo hizo sin pensarlo.

Тази книга беше първото доказателство, че ЕГНто си оказва влияние 🤣 Определено не съм в таргет групата, а и е написана много наивно(според мен). Това обаче не я прави лоша, просто съм старичък за тийн драма 🤣

Anaíd has a normal life, until her mother disappears without trace. She is confronted with the shocking truth: her mother is a witch and the chosen one who will end the ancient war between two feuding clans.
Most of the time I don't really care about writing style. Sentences shouldn't be too short and I don't want a story of metaphors, but otherwise I am fine. This translation however felt a bit stilted. Sometimes the wrong words were used and I had trouble reading this book because of it. 'War of the Witches' is over-descriptive with a lot of useless information, and that while it's only about 300 pages.
For such a short book I was also bored way too often. I had no other priorities and was still checking the length of every chapter. I even stopped reading in the middle of some chapters. That's a terrible sign. It did get a bit better near the end of this book, but I was never fully engrossed.
You could say this book has two plot twists, although I am not sure if one was trying to be a twist. Let me tell you that the only person surprised by these twists was the main character. In the last 10 pages something was explained that was already obvious from page 20.
Another thing I missed, was some kind of training/ learning montage. Yes, there was one, but I didn't need to read that Anaíd was capable of almost anything without training.
I also couldn't stand that Anaíd was ugly and people didn't like her because of that. And that she became beautiful within this story and that everyone wanted to hang out with her, for that reason. That's such a terrible message to send.
'War of the Witches' gets two stars, because it lacked in so many ways and was boring. I also hated all of the characters. The only good thing I can say about it, is that the elements of the story weren't unique, but the story as a whole was.

El clan de la loba, ha sido un buen comienzo de trilogía.
La historia nos cuenta los enfrentamientos y las guerras que siempre ha habido entre las brujas Omar y las Odish desde hace muchos años. Además, la situación actual no es otra, ya que a día de hoy todavía perdura esta rivalidad.
El principio de la historia nos revela el motivo principal de todo lo que va a suceder en la novela. Este no es más que la desaparición de Selene, bruja Omar y madre de la protagonista, Anaíd. Esta tendrá que conseguir llegar hasta su madre para poder sacarla del lugar en el que la tienen prisionera las brujas Odish. Para ello, tendrá que entrenarse de forma muy dura noche y día, contando con la ayuda de otras brujas Omar.
"Las casualidades no existen. Los objetos, las personas o las circunstancias que nos salen al encuentro se cruzan en nuestro camino por alguna razón. Lo importante es comprender cuál es el motivo y saber hacer el uso adecuado."
He de decir, que al principio me ha costado un poco adentrarme y situarme en la historia ya que se nos presentan varios nombres de personajes, y había veces que tenía incluso que buscar quién era cada uno porque no me acordaba. A pesar de esto, más adelante, la historia toma un ritmo bastante más ágil y nos sitúa perfectamente en este mundo fantástico tan original.
La pluma de la autora me ha parecido muy delicada pero a la vez precisa, por lo que me ha gustado bastante. Además, tenemos personajes con carácteres y personalidades muy diferentes.
Deseando ponerme YA con su continuación:El desierto de hielo.

Este libro llevaba esperando, y no exagero, una década en mi estantería. Lo compré siendo adolescente, y quizá una adolescente habría leído con ojos más amables los problemas, a veces insustanciales, de otra adolescente.
Me ha dado una pereza increíble. Me apetecía leer algo diferente, algo ligero, entretenido, pero lo he acabado engullendo por obligación, atragantándome más de una vez. La historia prometía, y el pasaje sobre el origen de las brujas despertó mi curiosidad, pero de ahí en adelante ha decaído bastante. Tramas predecibles, personajes superficiales, situaciones estúpidas y banales...
Aunque si algo he de destacar, son los fantasmas. Los fantasmas me han gustado. Todos ellos. Bueno, los cuatro. Pero todos, al fin y al cabo. La princesa, el caballero, el sireno (y que nadie me contradiga en esto) y el cómico Marco Tulio. Sus apariciones espontáneas, sus traiciones, sus maldiciones, sus condenas. La forma en que no pueden intervenir en nuestro mundo a no ser que sean apelados. Sus historias, sus muertes.
Pero a parte de los espíritus errantes, no hay recoveco en este libro donde esconderse.

Jajajajajajajjajajajaja, he aguantado ¡¡10 páginas!! y ya lo he abandonado. xDDDDDD.
Creo que es mi record de abandono. Y me explico: aunque esta señora haya sido profesora de Lengua y Literatura en enseñanza media y profesora de escritura de guiones y de escritura creativa en los masters de la UAB, la Universidad de Barcelona, la UIMP de Valencia y la FES de Olot (wikipedia dixit), pues no coincidimos ella y yo en como meter las "comas" en una frase. En 10 páginas me he hartado de intentar leer sus frases llenas, repletas, rebosantes de subordinadas.. y claro, no me enteraba de nada de la trama atento yo a descifrar esas oraciones.
Evidentemente ella sabe mucho mas del tema y supongo que estará bien escrito y puntuado. Pero como lector me permito poner esta opinión y esta puntuación (creo que tengo el derecho, casi la obligación de hacerlo).

Приятно фентъзи за тийнове, но препоръчвам за 16+ години, поради пиене на кръв от бебета и поведението на вещиците, което не е много за деца.
В света има два клана вещици - добри и лоши. Майката на Анаид е отвлечена от лошия клан и държана в плен. Всички смятат, че Селене е избраната за пророчеството, което чакат от години и е предала своите хора. Дъщеря ѝ не смята така и решава да я търси. На 14 години е, но вече започва да усеща някакви сили в себе си и е твърде умна за възрастта си. Добрите вещици започват да забелязват в нея силата и я посвещават в магьосничеството. Анаид овладява бързо магията, започва да си говори с животните, вижда духове на мъртви хора и дори успява да се превърне в риба и птица. Тя поема по пътя на своето израстване, за да спаси майка си Селене.

На 14 години е, но вече започва да усеща някакви сили в себе си и е твърде умна за възрастта си. Добрите вещици започват да забелязват в нея силата и я посвещават в магьосничеството. Анаид овладява бързо магията, започва да си говори с животните, вижда духове на мъртви хора и дори успява да се превърне в риба и птица. Тя поема по пътя на своето израстване, за да спаси майка си Селене.

Leuk kinderboek, de schrijfstijl was enigszins eigenaardig, maar dat kan deels door de vertaling komen. Een punt van aandacht echter. Dolfijnen. Hebben. Geen. Schubben! :@

Приветствам искрено всеки не-американски фентъзиен автор, успял някак да пробие на родния ни пазар, където не-англиканската фамилия мъничко плаши, намеквайки за някаква предполагаема европейска префърцуненост. Каквато повярвайте ми в повечето случаи напълно, ама напълно липсва. Трилогията за вещиците на Майте Каранса е като силно цензуриран филм на Алмодовар отпреди някое и друго десетилетие – ода за жените, непостоянните им характери, безумните ситуации, и тук – една здравословна доза магия и ърбън модерна реалност, която предполагам ще се хареса на всички вас – фенове на Хари Потър. Защото подрастващата главна героиня Анаид е симбиозен клонинг на Хари плюс Бела плюс което се сетите рандъм спънато селяче, чиято съдба е да спаси света, защото е Избраната от великите сили на Прамайката. Което ха познайте колко много ми допада. Правилно – хич.
Историята започва в забито село някъде из Пиринеите, където едно малко сиво момиченце се запознава с Големите лоши хормони, усмъртяващата идея за първа целувка и твърде много жени тип кокошки – носачки около нея, които я пазят като зеницата на очите си, защото както казахме преди – тя е Избраната. И не го знае, даже хич не подозира. Майката на нашето нещастно протагонистче пък е изключително впечатляваща хубавица, която по наше време е еманацията на популярна дума от четири букви, напомняща елф, ама с м отпред, отличаваща се с подчертано испански (разбирай тотално куку) характер, емоционална интелигентност на 12 годишна и видимо отвращение към околния, тъй беден откъм забавления свят. Същата бива отвлечена от злите вещици – вариация на вампири в алтернативна реалност, и невръстната ѝ дъщеря е единствената, която може да я спаси, за което ще трябва да бъде скоростно светната, че е Избраната и набързо обучена да е богиня. Лесна работа. Ама не.
Анаид се оказва стандартен, тъжен и объркан тийн, вероятно емо. Като такъв прави всякакъв вид и род грешки на растежа, но учудващо никоя от простотиите ѝ не променя кой знае колко пътя на предзнаменованието. Независимо колко непохватничка, кухичка, задръстенка и откровено казано жалка е нашата Бела… ъъъ, така де, Диана на обратно, тя ще спаси света, убие злите могъщи хилядолетни вещици, събере родителите си, намери верни приятелки и даже си получи първата целувка за едно хиляда страници време. Което прави трилогията такъв многомилионен хит, какъвто е, вероятно очакващ някоя и друга екранизация.
Сега, факт е, че аз ърбъните не мога да ги дишам кой знае колко много, и трябва наистина да попадна на някой изключително добър словомайстор, за да издържа абоминацията на вмъкване на чиста магия в чиста реалност. Майте Каранса е масов автор, създала лесна за четене и възприемане история за подрастващи, говореща на техния език, вълнуваща се от техните приоритети, сбъдваща техните мечти. Чудесно книжно начало за някой нечетящ, но за момента самотен и тъжен тийн, който ще срещне истински верен приятел в лицето на вещичката Анаид, и ще си направи някои навременни заключения за заобикалящия го свят. А за такива като мен остават идеите за Ледената кралица, южноамериканските врати към отвъдното, и тихите прокълнати призраци. Което не е чак толкова малко.

Hace años que leí estos libros por primera vez y solamente recordaba que va sobre brujas, que la protagonista se llama Anaíd y que tanto ella como su madre son pelirrojas. Poco más. Así que llevaba bastante tiempo queriendo releerlos y por fin, después de posponer mil veces la relectura, lo he hecho.
Este primer libro es bastante introductorio. Conocemos a Anaíd, una chica cuya madre ha desaparecido en misteriosas circunstancias, y las mujeres que se turnan para cuidarla mientras tanto esconden bastantes secretos que ponen bastante nerviosa a la protagonista, que es una adolescente de apenas catorce años que todavía no se ha desarrollado.
Debido a la desaparición de su madre, la excéntrica Selene, Anaíd toma una serie de decisiones que la llevan a descubrir, poco a poco, su verdadera naturaleza: es una bruja Omar, y también lo son su madre, su difunta abuela y las mujeres que se han ocupado de su cuidado en ausencia de Selene.
Esto se descubre más o menos hacia la mitad de la novela, de forma que esa primera parte del libro se hace un poco lenta, pues no se sabe de qué hablan las mujeres cuando se reúnen a espaldas de Anaíd, y ella está demasiado preocupada por encajar en el instituto y por hablar con el chico que le gusta, Roc.
Sin embargo, a partir del descubrimiento de las brujas Omar, todo resulta mucho más interesante. Anaíd no deja de descubrir cosas acerca de las Omar y de sí misma, y está empeñada en aprender a usar su magia para encontrar a su madre. No obstante, todo indica que Selene podría estar prisionera de las Odish, las brujas enemigas de las Omar, por lo que podría ser muy peligroso para Anaíd tratar de rescatarla…
Todo ello sin olvidar la profecía sobre la elegida que pondrá fin a la guerra eterna entre las brujas Omar y las brujas Odish, pues ambos bandos descienden de la madre O.
Esta saga me encantó cuando era pequeña y me ha encantado redescubrirla con esta primera parte. Creo que incluso podría decir que me ha gustado más que la primera vez que la leí, pues me ha resultado más sencillo entender a Anaíd, tan perdida en el mundo, sin su madre y con la adolescencia acechando, por no hablar de todo el tema de las brujas y la magia que tiene que aprender a controlar.
Y qué decir de la parte de fantasía y la magia. Siempre me han encantado los libros de este género, y más si hay brujas, y creo que la autora ha sabido jugar muy bien sus cartas y ha creado un mundo de lo más interesante, con los diferentes clanes de las brujas Omar y su guerra eterna contra las Odish, que desangran niñas y bebés para mantenerse siempre jóvenes.
Como digo, leí esta saga hace años, probablemente de adolescente, y la disfruté en su momento igual que la estoy disfrutando ahora, a las puertas de los treinta. Así que si os gusta el género de la fantasía, y en especial el tema de las brujas, os la recomiendo encarecidamente.

Originally published in Spain as La Guerra de las Brujas: El Clan de la Loba ("The War of the Witches: The Clan of the She-Wolf"), this young adult fantasy from Catalan author Maite Carranza is the first in a trilogy of books setting out the epic tale of a conflict between two rival witch clans, the Omars and the Odish, and the journey of the Chosen One - the long-awaited witch whom prophecy foretold would bring about an end to their eons-long magical war. Although both descended from the great mother witch, O, through her two daughters, Om and Od, and their daughters, Oma and Odi (both Om's daughters, in reality), the Omars and Odish were as different as night and day. The Omars, divided after all these many millennia into animals clans, were descended from Om and Omi, and were mortals. Although gifted in diverse magics, they refused to use their enchantment for personal gain, or to take vengeance upon others, and kept their lives as witches a secret. The Odish, by contrast, were descended from Od and Odi, and although fewer in number than the Omars, were terribly powerful, for they had devoted themselves to becoming immortal, preserving their lives at a terrible cost, and using their magic unsparingly, in the pursuit of their own ends.
Unaware of this long history, and of her family's place in it, young Anaíd Tsinoulis had grown up in Urt, a small village in the Pyrenees. But when her beautiful and vivacious mother, Selene, went missing, she was suddenly catapulted into a world she never knew existed: a world of women, wild magic, and wolves. For Anaíd, like her mother Selene and grandmother Deméter before her, was of the She-Wolf Clan, and like them, she had an important role to play in the larger fate of the Omars. As she slowly began to learn of the history of her kind, and to master her growing magical powers, Anaíd also learned of her missing mother's destiny, as the Chosen One. Chosen as our October selection, in the International Children's Book Club to which I belong, War of the Witches is a book I had a great deal of trouble finishing, despite some good qualities, and I have been at a little bit of a loss as to how to rate and review it. First though, the good. I really liked the ideas behind this story, and the mythology that Carranza constructed for her witchy world. The overarching story of O and her descendants, specifically the burgeoning conflict between good witch Om and bad witch Od, is strongly reminiscent of a similar mythology used by American author L.J. Smith, in her Night World books. In the Night World universe, two ancient witches, Maya and Hellewise, gave rise, with their very different philosophies and actions, to two separate magical races: the lamia, or vampires, and the hearth-women, or witches. Maya, the very first vampire in Smith's cosmology, made herself immortal by sacrificing another, and drinking her blood, just as Od did in Carranza's mythology. The Odish are clearly meant to be vampiric, something revealed not just by the fact that they feed on the blood of others - and specifically, on the blood of young Omar witches - and thereby gain power and immortality, but on the oblique references, in the conversation between Selene and the Countess, to the (real life) Hungarian countess, Elizabeth Báthory ("Aren't you known as 'the bloody Countess?'... According to literature, you slaughtered more than six hundred young girls in your Hungarian castle").
This decided similarity, in the foundational mythology of Carranza and Smith's series - the existence, in each, of two magical races, one witchy, and the other vampiric (even if not called that), descended from two ancient witch sisters who came into conflict with one another - was quite interesting to see, and made me wonder: had Carranza read Smith's work at some point, and been influenced by it? Was the similarity entirely coincidental? (It's not inconceivable that two authors could both envision such a world). Or were both drawing on some other source - perhaps mythological? - unknown to me? Just as these questions, raised by such parallel themes, were of interest, so too were those motifs unique to Carranza's work, specifically, the Iberian mythology upon which she was clearly drawing. I'm not as familiar with this material, although I recognized terms like anjanas (a kind of fairy creature, from the mythology of the Celtic-influenced Cantabrian region of Spain), and names like Gargoris and Habis (some kind of epic legend from the area...?), and was immediately struck with a desire to know more about this folk tradition.
I was also struck by the strongly matriarchal aspect of Carranza's world. This is a world of women - not just run by women, but of women, and as far as I was able to ascertain, men had little to no role in it. All the major characters were female, and the central conflict, involving Anaíd's quest to find Selene, was focused on the mother-daughter bond, rather than on any kind of romantic entanglement (as has become all too common in quite a bit of fantasy fiction being written for young adults these days). The other relationships - between Anaíd and her great Aunt Criselda, between Anaíd and the seemingly odious Clodia - are also squarely in a woman's world, and while males do enter into the narrative from time to time, as husbands, boyfriends, or crushes, they seem to be kept in the dark, as to what is really going on.
These themes and motifs, some familiar and some unfamiliar, made War of the Witches an interesting read, but unfortunately, they couldn't make it a particularly congenial one, and that brings me to the bad. First, the writing is uneven, veering between rather pedestrian contemporary teenage issues - Anaíd's despair at her looks, or at her social ineptitude - and sweeping fantastic ones. Of course, there's nothing to say that a story can't address both aspects of the heroine's experience, but somehow the two components never seemed to fit very well together. Anaíd's transformation, from a girl who doesn't even know that she is a witch, to one with a myriad of astonishing skills, felt far too easy, and made her seem like a distinct Mary Sue (particularly when one factors in her sudden change from ugly duckling to beautiful swan). There are plot lines left dangling - just who is Christine Olav, and what is her relationship to Selene? - although perhaps these are resolved in the subsequent two titles in the trilogy. Finally, the language itself - and here I am not speaking of the storytelling choices, but of the construction of the text - was poor. I tried to ignore it, the first few times I stumbled across an odd or incorrect word choice (or the omission of a word that was needed), but finally it became apparent: there were serious style issues here. Powers increase in "size," rather than strength (difficult to imagine, with such intangible qualities), Odish schemers "instigate" a human assassin from the shadows, rather than manipulating her: these kind of errors (and they are frequent), even if they slipped past the translator, should have been caught by an editor, surely?
These issues, of writing style and translation, all detracted from my enjoyment, although not enough to make me want to stop reading, given my interest in the story. Of course, having made my way through the first volume, I now have to stop anyway, as the second two haven't been translated yet...

Or were both drawing on some other source - perhaps mythological? - unknown to me? Just as these questions, raised by such parallel themes, were of interest, so too were those motifs unique to Carranza's work, specifically, the Iberian mythology upon which she was clearly drawing. I'm not as familiar with this material, although I recognized terms like anjanas (a kind of fairy creature, from the mythology of the Celtic-influenced Cantabrian region of Spain), and names like Gargoris and Habis (some kind of epic legend from the area...?), and was immediately struck with a desire to know more about this folk tradition.
I was also struck by the strongly matriarchal aspect of Carranza's world. This is a world of women - not just run by women, but of women, and as far as I was able to ascertain, men had little to no role in it. All the major characters were female, and the central conflict, involving Anaíd's quest to find Selene, was focused on the mother-daughter bond, rather than on any kind of romantic entanglement (as has become all too common in quite a bit of fantasy fiction being written for young adults these days). The other relationships - between Anaíd and her great Aunt Criselda, between Anaíd and the seemingly odious Clodia - are also squarely in a woman's world, and while males do enter into the narrative from time to time, as husbands, boyfriends, or crushes, they seem to be kept in the dark, as to what is really going on.
These themes and motifs, some familiar and some unfamiliar, made War of the Witches an interesting read, but unfortunately, they couldn't make it a particularly congenial one, and that brings me to the bad. First, the writing is uneven, veering between rather pedestrian contemporary teenage issues - Anaíd's despair at her looks, or at her social ineptitude - and sweeping fantastic ones. Of course, there's nothing to say that a story can't address both aspects of the heroine's experience, but somehow the two components never seemed to fit very well together. Anaíd's transformation, from a girl who doesn't even know that she is a witch, to one with a myriad of astonishing skills, felt far too easy, and made her seem like a distinct Mary Sue (particularly when one factors in her sudden change from ugly duckling to beautiful swan). There are plot lines left dangling - just who is Christine Olav, and what is her relationship to Selene? - although perhaps these are resolved in the subsequent two titles in the trilogy. Finally, the language itself - and here I am not speaking of the storytelling choices, but of the construction of the text - was poor. I tried to ignore it, the first few times I stumbled across an odd or incorrect word choice (or the omission of a word that was needed), but finally it became apparent: there were serious style issues here. Powers increase in "size," rather than strength (difficult to imagine, with such intangible qualities), Odish schemers "instigate" a human assassin from the shadows, rather than manipulating her: these kind of errors (and they are frequent), even if they slipped past the translator, should have been caught by an editor, surely?
These issues, of writing style and translation, all detracted from my enjoyment, although not enough to make me want to stop reading, given my interest in the story. Of course, having made my way through the first volume, I now have to stop anyway, as the second two haven't been translated yet...

No entiendo por qué llevaba tanto tiempo este libro pendiente de leer pero cuando lo cogí... Fue una sorpresa monumental. Que me encanta la magia, las brujas y las sociedades femeninas no es nada nuevo pero que la esta historia me parezca TAN BUENA sin caer en tópicos y que haya resultado tan interesante sí que es una sorpresa. Y muy grata.

I've found it in YA section, however it's more of a middle-grade read and that's how should be judged.
So, what would 12-year-old me think about it?
For the bigger part it felt satisfying to guess some plot twists much sooner than any of the characters, and the reasoning behind the 'useless adults' trope in the first half was sound, and seemed justified enough. Nearer the end, though, there were just too many elements lining up towards the obvious conclusion, and yet no-one even stopped for a second to consider that option. Which is somewhat understandable, they were too preoccupied with a hard fight ahead and not enough time to prepare - except the writing style didn't work really well for creating a sense of urgency. The book was written like a hundreds yeas old legend, despite being set in modern times - a style that made the less eventful parts flow nicely, but at the same time made it harder to emotionally connect to what was happening. Still, some parts made me smile, even laugh twice.
Then again, 12 year-old me would have liked that style - she was writing in a similar manner herself.
I liked the Pyrenees setting - both the real one and its magical world version. This part was easy to picture and felt as if the author was writing about places she knew well; she didn't seem to have the same level of familiarity with Sicily though, which I think is ultimately why I had less fun reading that section.
There are just enough unanswered questions and not-yet-awakened potential (hoping for more witches doing some witching!) to make me go back to my library for the next books in the series.

Este libro, que ya había leído hace años en el instituto, pero del que apenas me acordaba, es el primero de una trilogía que cuenta las afrentas de dos bandos de brujas (las Odish y las Omar) y de como gracias a la elegida, unas u otras vencerán.
Es una historia entretenida, recomendable para gente que le guste la fantasía, la magia, las brujas o los animales, con un mundo y una historia bastante originales, aunque para mí gusto hubieran podido exprimir mucho más de todo esto. Esperemos a ver a los siguientes...

I alternately liked and hated this book because the writing was so uneven. Mood and style seemed to change from chapter to chapter.
I suspect that a lot of this was due to a lousy translator. It doesn't matter how fluent you are in 2 language, translating a book so that it reads as beautifully in another language as it did in the original is highly skilled work.
Perhaps this is a wonderful book. I thought the plot and characters had a lot of potential. But in the end, it is a failure, at least in English.

En resumidas cuentas es un libro que está bien, es entretenido y me gustaría decir que fácil de leer sino fuese porque mi versión de EPUB tenía muchisismo errores. Aun así la historia te engancha y te apetece saber más.
No es un libro maduro, en absoluto, es más un libro juvenil. Incluso infantil a veces, recuerda un poco a Harry Potter aunque su historia no tenga absolutamente nada que ver. Los personajes para mí son muy poco carismáticos pero vuelvo a repetir que es una novela juvenil y como señora de 26 años pues no he podido simpatizar, ni cogerle cariño a ningún personaje.
A pesar de ello, la trama está muy pero que muy bien. Es interesante y además te hace pensar en qué pasará a continuación. Voy a darle una oportunidad a la trilogía y leerla entera a ver qué es lo que ocurre, porque es cierto que la trama en sí me parece guay solo que los personajes son un poco infantiles.
La recomiendo si quieres leer fantasía super chill sin tener que aprenderte noventa clases de magia, noventa tipos de seres fantásticos y otros 40 clanes (lo cual a mí me gusta pero de vez en cuando tengo que descansar el cerebro).
Centrándome un poquito en los personajes, pensaba que Deméter iba a ser más importante. La protagonista es una niña pequeña de 14 años así que no se le puede pedir mucho (respecto a magia es fantástica pero de madurez obviamente no) y su madre está obsesionada con el dinero así que tampoco podemos pedirle mucho jajajajaja pero bueno en general está bien por eso le doy tres estrellas.
Lo he disfrutado, no me he aburrido y ha sido entretenido. Ha cumplido su objetivo 😊

Escuchado en audiolibro.
Me ha gustado, pero no mucho más de eso. Es una historia entretenida y ágil, pero demasiado juvenil para mí ahora (diría que incluso está en un plano medio entre las lecturas de un niño y de un adolescente), y soy consciente de que no soy el target para este libro.
Sí me ha gustado mucho el lore de los clanes, el sistema de magia, los conflictos entre las brujas y el mundo opaco. Es lo que más interesante me pareció de todo, los paisajes y la magia.
