This was a good murder mystery, detective book. I especially was impressed with the ending!

I thought it was interesting right until the end. The end was a bit of a letdown for me though.

I don't think I've every given a one star rating, but this book was so hard to read. The idea is actually fantastic and I don't think that I will ever fill out another contest entry (not a spoiler unless you stop less that 20% of the way through). The editing is horrible. I challenge any reader to find a page without one error; it is completely distracting. That being said I did have fun with some of the more humorous errors - the detective is a 'work alcoholic', something was a 'waist of time', and the detective is a great judge of 'caricature'. The last one is used 3 times.

The writing is clunky and hard difficult and the characters aren't well flushed out. The dialogue is not well written. There is way too much time spent on a side love story of what should be a side character, not a main one. The romance feels high schoolish, not one of grown, working young adults. The way some of the characters speak makes no sense. What 19 year old boy living at home says 'Unfortunately, yes, I do" when asked if he has to work the next day. Ugh.

As far as not putting it down? I struggled to keep reading in order to see how the plots came together and forced myself to finish. You know the killer from the beginning and the ending. The ending could be great if the focus had been more on the killer and the hunt than on the side characters and their annoying relationships. And for the person who mentioned that when it is finished it will be great - the book takes place and was obviously written in the 90s. I wouldn't hold my breath.

My last and very minor point compared to the rest is that the author did not do any investigation into her characters or their roles. The main love interest of the daughter is an 'almost doctor' who is in residency. No. If he is in residency he is a Dr. already. M.D. behind his name and all and he most certainly wouldn't try to switch residency over a girl he met 3 weeks ago.

Enter At Your Own Risk is a creatively imagined psychological murder mystery, one that readers would normally have trouble putting down. In it, author April O’Brien invites you into the twisted mind of a maniacal serial killer, driven by madness to commit some of the most horrific murders imaginable. Fans of psychological thrillers will see the considerable potential Enter At Your Own Risk possesses, as well as appreciate O’Brien’s efforts to bring her riveting story line to life.

It cannot be ignored, though, that the pervasive editing issues with the book take away from its overall potency. What could have been a thoroughly engrossing tale of suspense and mystery becomes difficult to follow with each new grammatical or typographical error, of which there are many. While one would hate to judge a book solely on its editorial presentation, the reality is even the most well thought out story won’t have the same punch as one with a more polished delivery.

Editing issues aside, Enter At Your Own Risk shows the dynamic potential of a highly creative literary mind. Hopefully, O’Brien’s talent becomes more unencumbered in future offerings.

Read the Kindle version and it could have been a great book but the spelling, miswording, etc. was a bit much. The writing was amaturish and written in a way that was cumbersome to read. e.g., in one sentence the author is trying to say the character's 'waist' was too large. However, she used the word 'waste'. This went on throughout the book. I just hope this is not going to be an eReader issue.

I truly enjoyed this story. It is a scary idea. I think I will like the rest of her books. I am going to give another one a try. I would really love to read the sequel to this book. Don't take to long. I am not good at waiting.

I thought this story had the bones of a good story and was chilling in parts. It does need some work, however, once that's done, I think it would thrill the reader into wanting more by this author. I found the idea intriguing and worth a look.
