The Impact of a Father
Family dynamics can be challenging. The environment in which a child develops can create scars—mental, physical and emotional—that follow a child into adulthood, impacting all aspects of the adult’s life. For Amanda Fisher, a 27-year-old lawyer, her family’s interactions had been troubled since before she was born. Luckily, Amanda has very few memories of her father, a violent man used his hands and his words to control his wife and children. But, she does remember her father’s abusive engagement with her mom and her older brother Brian. And, while the controlling and violent father deserted his family when Amanda was only 3, he left accumulation of years of physical and emotional abuse of his wife and young son that left scars on the soul and the mind.
Amanda grew up with brother Brian, 10 years her senior, as her guide and inspiration. So, when he went to law school, she set law school as her goal. At 18, before her college experience began, she left their home and travelled to NYC where Brian was young lawyer, already distinguishing himself in the powerful city law firm. And, the experience was wonderful—law was the profession she wanted to pursue. And, while her brother was not always available to accompany his sister on promised excursions—or even pick her up at the airport when she first arrived, Brian was still keeping tabs on her and taking care of her. By passing the tasks of transportation, NYC activities and overseeing her internship in the law firm over to his best friend since college and law school, Matt Dawson, Brian was doing his duty to care for his sister while not complicating his schedule. So, Matt with his intense blue eyes, dark hair and tattoo covered arms and chest, soon Amanda’s vision of sex in Sagan leather. And, by the end of the summer, Matt had also introduced his best friend’s younger sister to the world of hot, passionate sex.
Now, nine years later, baby sister Amanda is back in NYC, not to tour or intern, but to work at Dawson and Fisher, the law firm of her brother and his best friend. With a law degree in hand, Amanda is ready to work. She has brought with her an intense work ethic and motivation—her bright, clever 8-year-old blue-eyed son, Aaron.
Summer Brooks has offered her readers a delightful first novella. The characters are engaging and the tension between the characters is intense. I look forward to additional writings from this author. The one suggestion I would offer the author for the reader’s pleasure would be to consider adding a last chapter set a few years later. The characters are left in a very emotional upheaval. I would like to check in on them later.
I purchased this novella through Amazon and am voluntarily leaving a review.
