“Over here, trespasser.”

“I am no trespasser,” I replied, crossing my arms around myself as if they could shield me from this dream.

“No?” he mused. “If not a trespasser, then a thief?” He took my palm, brutally cold fingers tracing across the sigil. The feeling was searing and throbbing all at once. Dangerous. “I don’t remember giving this away freely.”

There is no greater privilege than to wear the title of FATEWOKEN—a mortal who serves as a divine mouthpiece for one of the Gods living across the veil.

As the only Fatewoken to Alistair, Lord of the Sun, Gemma Fowler knows her place: perform her devotions, keep her village temple in good order, and act in whatever capacity her God sees fit. She's the only human who can see or touch him, and the entire kingdom is counting on her to keep him happy.

Her life is unspooling exactly how Fate ordained it.

Until a vengeful God poisons her little brother. Until she vows to join the royal hunt and win the favour of the Goddess of Healing. Until she starts losing time and memories. Until a near-death experience at sea throws her directly into the path of Killian, the brooding and reclusive God of the Depths who has never once taken a Fatewoken.

Until she enters into a second, impossible fated bond with him.

Suddenly, Gemma’s perfect life is in tatters. After learning that Killian considers Alistair his immortal enemy, she vows to keep him a secret until she can find a way to fix things—but the bond between them is not only igniting a whirlwind of feelings, it’s also pulling them together in the secret spaces of her dreams.

As the hunt turns deadly and the clock to save her brother ticks down, Gemma is torn between the God she’s always loved and the one whose waters she might just drown in.

FATEWOKEN is book one in a planned duology perfect for fans of fated bonds, forced proximity, royal quests, grumpy x sunshine, and a fresh new world that will send your heart spinning.

It's a great honor to be a God's Fatewoken. Gemma is the only Fatewoken to Alistair, Lord of the Sun, and all of Yvenya is dependent on his good mood. Gemma is satisfied with her life, except for her little brother getting sick. When Alistair tells her that Cyrus has been poisioned by a God, her life gets turned upside down. The only chance to save his life is to join the royal hunt. If she wins she can ask the Goddess of Healing to cure him. Together with her friends Bea and Bastian, Gemma sets out to the capital. Before they even get there, Gemma falls overboard and faces Killian, God of the Depths. Their encounter ends in something impossible.

I love mythology and Lockwood has created a fascinating web of complex Gods and interesting people. If you also like fated bonds, forced proximity, grumpy/sunshine and uncertainty about who the villain truly is - this could be a book for you! Sure, I'm slightly bothered by Gemma's gullibility, but at the same time it enforces her kindness, which play a big part in the story.

Alistair and Killian are bitter enemies, and we don't get the whole truth until the end of the book. Gemma is torn between the two Gods, as well as between her different feelings for them. It soon becomes apparent that one of them is lying to Gemma, and as an outsider I would say it's pretty easy to "choose side", but it isn't obvious to her.

“Say yes again and there’s no going back. Not for me. Say yes and I might ruin you.”

The worst part about this books is that I have to wait for the next one!

I had been in a reading slump and this book completely pulled me out of it! The world she created is captivating, and filled with characters who are intriguing.

The slow burn romance is one that pulls you in, and makes you want to keep reading to see what will happen next!

Gemma is a fun, young female lead. She is wholly good, with an attitude we get to see sometimes, and (no spoilers!) is tested in quite a few ways! I won’t say which male lead is my favourite… but I really enjoyed his character!

There’s some great twists and turns, and it has a good pace so nothing felt like it dragged on or sped ahead too much.

I would definitely recommend reading this book if you like YA fantasy!

I received this book and an ARC reader for free, and am voluntarily writing this review.

Fatewoken ARC review ☀️🌊👌

Tropes:
☀️Fated Bonds
🌊Unstoppable FMC
☀️Forced Proximity
🌊Grumpy God
☀️Slowburn

Where do I even begin?
I was so happy when I was picked to read this ARC before it's release date of 28th October 2025.
As soon as I read the blurb I knew it would be the kind of story that I get into.

The story's main character Gemma is a FATEWOKEN to her Sun God Alistair. She is happy with how fate has worked out for her and shows no limits in her faith to her god.
Life is happy until her younger brother falls ill and she commits herself to joining the Royal hunt in hope of winning over the Godess of healing to help cure her sibling.
Gemma departs her home and sets off with her two close friends Bea and Bastian ( and can I just add, Bastian is hilarious, his remarks throught the book had me belly laughing at times) but during their travels she has a near death experience and becomes fate bonded to a second god. * Once I had got to this part of the story I was well and truly hooked🪝the witty retorts from moody Lord Killian (the God of the depths 🌊) reeled me in 🎣😉
During the book we see Gemma's relationships put to the test. Her faith and love for her First god Alistair begins to put a strain on her friendship with Bea. She also feels the need to hide her second bond with Killian from Alistair in fear of upsetting him. This becomes increasinly difficult however as her encounters in her dreams with Killian become more frequent and it leaves her torn between the god that she has been forever devoted to and the one who now plagues her thoughts.
This book is full of incredible world building. The description of the capital city made me want to jump into the book; I would love to see the kaleidoscope of colours across the land that is described🌈😍

🌶️Also if you are looking for spice, then this isn't really the book for you 😊 HOWEVER..... I don't think it needed it. The story in itself and the mood of the gods etc was enough.
I really hope we don't have long for the next book in this series because I NEED it in my life 🙈😆

I’ve been obsessed with mythology ever since I first learned about it in middle school, so this book was such a fun read for me! I love any story that involves a trial, competition, or adventure, and Fatewoken definitely delivered on that front.

I’m usually not a fan of love triangles, so I was a little nervous when I felt those vibes starting to show up—but it was handled in a way that never felt annoying or over the top. The ending had me seriously stressed (in a good way!) and totally reminded me of that Friends episode where Ross and Monica keep spilling each other’s secrets.

Overall, a great read that was really well written. I can’t wait to see where the rest of the trilogy goes!

I received an eARC for my honest opinion.

This book was such a pleasant surprise! I was drawn into the world within the first few chapters and stayed hooked all the way through. The pacing was steady—with a few slower parts—but it worked well for the story. The plot was rich with adventure, lore, history, death, betrayal, and memorable characters.

Gemma is loyal to a fault, trusting, naïve, and at times a bit frustrating—but in a way that makes her feel real. She’s torn between duty and desire, struggling to find her own path while questioning everything she once believed. Her inner thoughts really stood out to me; they allowed me to see her personal growth and transformation beyond blind devotion. When her brother is poisoned by another god, Gemma’s journey to find a cure forces her to choose between her faith in Alistair and a new, uncertain destiny.

The dynamic between Gemma and Alistair kept me guessing. I couldn’t help but question his motives—he gave off major “snake oil salesman” vibes at times! On the other hand, Killian was the perfect counterbalance—pushing Gemma to think for herself and showing depth behind his tough exterior.

The side characters brought so much warmth and humor to the story. The found family aspect was one of my favorite parts. Bastian’s caring nature and obsession with food added levity (that food scene had me laughing out loud!), while Bea was the fierce big sister type—protective, grounding, and never afraid to set someone straight.

Overall, Fatewoken is a strong start to what promises to be an exciting series filled with adventure, romance, betrayal, and personal growth. That cliffhanger at the end? Absolutely brutal—I need book two now!

I want to thank Juliet Lockwood for the opportunity to review this book.

I finally finished Fatewoken, and this book completely swept me away 🌙💫
From the very first chapter, Juliet Lockwood’s writing had me hooked. It’s the kind of storytelling that feels almost musical — full of magic, emotion, and those quiet, heart-tugging moments that stay with you long after you’ve turned the last page.
I was so invested in EVERYONE (and I might have yelled at the book once or twice 😅) Caught between two gods as well as her own comprehension of her world, all while trying to save her brother and her loved ones, Gemma takes us through the full spectrum of emotions from the first page 🫠 The world-building is just chef’s kiss! Rich and vivid, with the feel of a whole series of creation not just a few chapters and full of that dreamy, slightly uncertain kind of wonder that makes fantasy so special 👀
But what really got me was what Lockwood weaves throughout - it’s all about fate versus choice, and finding your own way, even when the path isn’t clear. It’s hopeful and empowering in the best way. ✨
If you love lush fantasy with strong emotions, found family, and a touch of slow-burn magic, I can’t recommend Fatewoken enough. Although be prepared that it’s just the tip of the iceberg for this world and its characters! 🙃
It’s one of those books that reminds you why you fell in love with the genre in the first place 💕

Fatewoken is Book 1 in the Fates Series by Juliet Lockwood. I felt that this story was a mythology fantasy with mythological gods and their human servant. Gemma is the fatewoken to Alistar, god of sun. Everything is wonderful and Gemma is living her best life. Until… her little brother is poisioned. Unfortunately, the goddess of healing and the sun god hate each other. Gemma has a hard problem to solve plus, is she someone's fated mate? Jump into a fast and furious fantasy. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.

this was really good. definitely think acotar fans and haters alike might enjoy this if they did like the concept of that series. FATEWOKEN deals with the concept of religious faith, grooming and what they call in our culture—devadasi; which can be seen as a love triangle, but I definitely believe it's pretty obvious the themes are deeper. One is sure to enjoy it!

First of all! That ending 🤯

I can not wait for the next installment. I need to know what happens next!

Gemma is a young woman who is devout in her faith of her bonded God, Alistair. When a mysterious illness takes hold of her younger brother, she goes on a dangerous adventure/hunt for the King, with her best friends, twins Bastian and Beatrix.

I love, the friend dynamic in this. Great banter that had me chuckling.

There are parts that are predictable, but it is also tropes that I adore -- so no complaints there from me. There is no spice, so if this is a deal breaker for you, avoid. 🫑

4 stars because the series is unfinished and a little more heated tension could of been good between the MMC's.

Thank you to the author for a copy of the eBook in exchange for an honest review.

Tropes: Adventure Romance, Fated Mates, Forced Proximity, Grumpy x Sunshine, Who Did This To You, Forbidden Love, Betrayal, Cliffhanger

I enjoyed this one! The world-building is solid, and the premise itself really intrigued me. The concept of Fatewoken—humans bonded to gods as their mouthpieces—was original and had a lot of potential. But fair warning: this book goes a little darker than you might expect.

Let’s talk about Gemma and Alistair. From the start, it’s clear their relationship is toxic. There’s heavy emotional manipulation, gaslighting, and control. Alistair has serious narcissistic tendencies. And Gemma is deep in it, to the point where she can’t see what’s happening. While this portrayal is intentional (and, honestly, pretty realistic for someone stuck in a toxic dynamic), it was frustrating to read because everyone around Gemma tries to help her see it, especially Bea and Bastian, but she just… doesn’t. And she doesn’t grow from it, either. At least, not until the very end, and even then, it felt underwhelming.

Enter Killian, the brooding God of the Depths. He’s the classic grumpy to Gemma’s sunshine, hasn’t bonded to anyone in centuries, and hates Alistair with a fiery passion. Naturally, Gemma ends up bonded to him too, breaking all kinds of rules and setting up a major forbidden love situation. Their dynamic brings tension, mystery, and those classic “forced proximity” moments, which were fun to read. Killian sees through Alistair’s manipulation and genuinely wants to help Gemma—but his motives remain murky until a late reveal.

About that twist…

The backstory between Alistair and Killian is revealed at the end, and while it was a surprise, it didn’t entirely make sense. It felt a little rushed and didn’t land the emotional or narrative weight it was going for. It explains a lot, but not in a satisfying way. And surprise surprise, someone's been telling lies all along.

My biggest issue? Gemma’s lack of growth. I understand that being in a manipulative relationship can cloud your judgment, but when everyone is telling you something’s wrong, and you’re actively losing memories, you’d expect some kind of shift in thinking. Gemma doesn’t evolve much throughout the story, which made it hard to root for her. I’m hopeful this changes in the next book, because her journey should be one of reclaiming her power and agency.

Overall, this was a solid start to a series with great world-building, compelling side characters, and tense romantic dynamics. But the lack of character development for the main protagonist and a twist that didn’t quite land made this a mixed read for me. That said, I’m still curious to see where the story goes next.

If you enjoy messy god/human dynamics, dark fantasy romance, and slow-burn forbidden love, you’ll probably enjoy this. Just go in expecting more vibes and tension than character arc—for now.

✨️ ARC ✨️
Fatewoken is a story filled with old gods, divine bonds, forbidden love, magic, dangerous quests, political intrigue, and a shrouded history that gradually unfolds.

In this world, gods can bond with many Fatewoken to serve and honor them, but a Fatewoken can belong to only one god - because gods do not share. The FMC, Gemma, is immensely proud to be the sole Fatewoken of Alistair, the powerful Lord of the Sun. Her devotion is absolute. But, she’s lived a sheltered life within his temple, and somewhere along the way, her divine worship started blurring with infatuation.

When her brother’s life is at stake, Gemma rashly sets out on a perilous quest she’s wholly unprepared for. She draws comfort from Alistair’s protection and the company of her closest friends, twins Bea and Bast. But the journey takes a dramatic turn when she is accidentally bonded to a second god - Killian, Lord of the Depths, who she discovers, is Alistair’s sworn enemy. As she is unable to rid herself of this new, shameful bond, and through their forced proximity, she finds herself drawing closer to Killian with feelings she doesn't understand. By the end of the novel, Gemma's whole world is turned upside-down.

The opening chapters hooked me right away and I was convinced this was going to be an unputdownable read. But somewhere in the middle, the momentum faltered. The pacing dragged, and despite all the lush detail, very little actually happened for so much of the book. The focus shifted heavily to worldbuilding and history, but much of it leaned on telling rather than showing, leaving the narrative bogged down with details that often felt more tedious than engaging.

The characters also suffered from lackluster execution. Bea and Bast were clearly intended as lovable side characters, but despite the strong effort to build their charm, I felt bad thinking they still fell flat. Similarly, while I usually enjoy a well-written forced proximity dynamic, the supposed tension between Gemma and Killian felt unconvincing and lacked spark. Dialogue overall often fell flat - sometimes stilted, sometimes cringeworthy, and occasionally distractingly inconsistent. A stablehand, for instance, suddenly spoke as though he’d stepped out of a western, while a servant offered advice such as: “Just don’t dance with anyone who looks like they smelled a fart - usually it’s their own.” Seriously?? SMH. Rather than adding personality, these moments pulled me out of the story and left me cringing.

Alistair and Gemma are the exception to my complaint about dialogue - theirs felt authentic for their unbalanced power dynamic of god and infatuated devotee. Their dynamic was subtle but tense - written so well that you could sense the manipulation without it being obvious.

Plot-wise, a few choices felt questionable. For instance, it seemed odd that the King provided literally everything the hunters needed for their quest. Bea and Bast, positioned as Gemma’s voice of reason, allowed her to abandon her only cloak on the very first day without protest. Even more puzzling was the decision to leave their horses behind before embarking on a continent-spanning journey - simply to avoid conflict with a single difficult teenage stablehand. And finally, naming the heroine Gemma and then sending her on a quest for a gem felt a little too on the nose.

In the end, Fatewoken is a novel with undeniable potential. The premise is compelling, the world rich with possibility, and the dynamic between Gemma and Alistair was especially well done. Unfortunately, uneven pacing, flat character dynamics, and questionable plot choices kept it from reaching the heights it could have. I wanted to love this story, and maybe others will, but ultimately I was left feeling disappointingly underwhelmed. The ending did succeed in drawing me back in and I'm curious to see where the sequel takes the story. I hope it delivers more consistently on the promise this book set up.

✨ My sincerest gratitude to Juliet Lockwood for the ARC. I am voluntarily leaving my honest review. ✨️

Gemma is a Fatewoken: a rare acolyte who's bonded to one of the Pantheon's gods. Her god, and the object of her devotions and affections, is none other than Alistair, the powerful golden god of the Sun. Her life is simple, dedicated to prayers and blessings. But when her beloved little brother Cyrus is poisoned by one of the gods, Alistair tells her of the Royal Hunt: winning it will grant her one wish - which she could use to heal her brother. Aided by her warrior friends, twins Bastian and Beatrix, Gemma embarks on the adventure and heads to the Palace, leaving behind the familiar comforts of her village. Only to find herself accidentally bonded to a second god before she even reaches the capitol. The dark, brooding god of Depths, Killian, is antagonistic at first: he didn't want to take a Fatewoken. Soon, however, they begin to settle into their bond, Gemma realizing she finds comfort in his company... which threatens to unravel everything she shares with Alistair. Because gods. Don't. Share.

This book is a Gem - pun intended. Fatewoken by Juliet Lockwood is the first book in a series, and thus serves as an introduction. It's a sort of prologue to Gemma's story, the things that happen in this first book a catalyst for decisions she'll make in the second book. And I love that careful build-up - a really strong foundation for The Fates - and I like where the story leaves us. There's a soft cliffhanger (to be expected with any series) that gives us enough to hope for, but with the clear sense that we're definitely heading into different territory from here on out - all bets will be off. In short: the real story is only beginning and I really can't wait to see how the story plays out next.

Fatewoken is very balanced: there's a little bit of everything, but it's never chaotic. Lockwood includes healthy amount of worldbuilding, we get a bunch of interesting characters, there's a fast-paced plot centered around a quest, and a wee bit of romance. And it all ties together wonderfully.

I always find worlds centered around ancient gods interesting, as it gives the author a lot of room to play with magic, rules and conflict. Lockwood's universe has over a hundred different gods. The story doesn't directly involve all of them (that would be overwhelming), but I do like how the amount of gods clearly reveals that every little facet of human life in Yvenya is influenced by these gods, each of them playing a part in making the world go round, so to speak. To serve the story, there are just a few major players (Alistair and Killian) with the lead-up to a significant role for a few others. I'm invested in the rivalry between Alistair and Killian - and having a human girl caught in between them - and it's strongly written, but I'm even more curious about how other gods will factor in as the story progresses. I love that we get a taste of that here.

With gods comes piety though, and that's where Gemma comes in. In becoming Alistair's Fatewoken when she was only a child, her whole life revolves around him. Her existence is tied to his in a worrisome way, because what else is there to this girl? Her arc is one of the best parts of the book. She doesn't doubt her faith, but begins to see it's all she has, all she is. The irony of her being accidentally bonded to a second god (beyond her control) being the reason why she begins to understand this, is not lost on me. But Killian, I suppose, symbolizes another way to be devout. He is a counter to Alistair, not only literally as his nemesis, but also as to how both men regard their godhood and the expectations they do or don't set. This ties in to why I love the inclusion of Gemma's strong friendships with Beatrix and Bastian.

Not only do these feisty twins provide glorious banter, they are also fiercely protective of Gemma, their bond almost familial (so much so, that it seriously took me a while to figure out that Gemma is not actually their sibling). These two are more than just sidekicks: they keep Gemma going throughout the quest, life, beyond. Without them, the story would have been over in mere chapters. I applaud how well they're utilized by the author. Bea is a character I am especially fond of. I like that she's no damsel: she's capable, skilled, clever, quick. And she won't hesitate to call Gemma on her sh*t and/or her naivety. Gemma is a stronger character for it as well, because no one wants to read about someone who's perfect all the time.

This is important especially because Gemma is our narrator, and the way she tells the story is absolutely biased by how she sees the world. Piously, innocently, simply - and (unintentionally) arrogantly. Largely due to characters like Bea, Bastian, side character Najira (another strong female!) and Killian, the author challenges our perception of Gemma and has her challenge her perception of herself. This is how a character really develops. I know we'll see her come into herself more fully in future books, and see other (old and new) characters develop further as well. (Re: Najira: she's one to watch.) The ensemble has the potential for more connections and friendships (and relationships), and is already making me excited.

The romance is early stages, and somewhat on the backburner, so don't expect too much there as of yet - but we get some nice scenes between Gemma and her gods, and those moments aren't one-dimensional. They're antagonistic or passionate or confusing or remarkable or surprising or genuine or not genuine or... Gemma goes through it all. I'm quite happy with where the romance is left off, because we do get passionate declarations and angst and yearning... All of that good teasing stuff.

So: there's already a lot to like, but Fatewoken also has that plot centered around the quest and its lead-up. Now, that part of the story has some predictability to it, but I don't think it's supposed to be a huge mystery to uncover. It moves along smoothly... and that is cleverly done once you put some things together. There are some surprising elements though (including one jaw-hitting-the-floor reveal) and plenty to keep us on our toes. But the point is: it's not really the reader who has to figure things out: it's Gemma. And like Bea and Bastian and Najira and Killian and others, we're along for the ride.

Thank you BookSirens and Juliet Lockwood for generously providing me with a copy of this book; all opinions expressed are honest, voluntary and 100% my own.

A big thank you to the author for the opportunity to read and review this ARC. I very nearly gave up on it due to the slow pacing.

A world in which the gods of the pantheon choose a mortal to be their muse across the veil, Gemma is dated to the sun god Alistair; if she misses just one devotion, he will allow rain to wash out the crops and the whole village will know it's because of her. She is his first Fatewoken in 200 years, after all.

Gemma learns a vengeful god has poisoned her little brother; she is to go on the royal hunt at Alistair's request to find a lost artefact and gain the wish to save her brother.

Things become complicated when Gemma accidentally bonds with another god; and unfortunately, gods don't like to share. Can Gemma keep this hidden from Alistair? Can she trust Killian, the god of the depths, despite his disdain for Alistair?

I find myself irked by this ARC; it took 50% to get to the interesting parts. A few plot points came out of left field or there was language that didn't match the time period. I know it's a fantasy world but you can't use language like "tresses" to describe hair and then describe a characters "abs".

I don't think it should take half a book for a story to become interesting. The pacing in part one was far too slow; I had pretty much given up at the 20% mark at the start of October; but decided to give it another shot. The motivation for the main character is to go on a quest to help save her brother, but it took 50% to get to the start of said quest. Too much faffing about in the beginning and I found the FMC very dull and naive. She didn't really show much of her personality through her internal monologue, which I guess can become a risk when writing a first person POV.

There are ways to give the reader information without spelling it out to them and unfortunately there was a lot of this that was spelled out. This story seemed to be unsure as to what kind of audience it was targeting; The first half felt aimed at significantly younger readers but then a shift occured around the midway point. This was too stark a change and I think the author could have found creative ways to showcase the loss of Gemma's innocence and naivety in a smoother progression- IF this was the intention.

But my god, the ending was really interesting and I do want to know what happens in book two.

This might be my most confusing review because I'm still giving this 3/5☀️s

Gemma is the single chosen Fatewoken to the god of the Sun, Alistair.  She lives a dutiful life caring for her family, attending temple, and making devotions to her God.  Until one day her life is turned upside down when she learns her brother's illness was caused by a God.  At the prompting of Alistair, Gemma joins the King's hunt to save her brother.  However, along the way, she is bonded to another God and this one is inhabiting her dreams.

The premise of this book was promising, but overall it fell flat for me.

The world building and magical system development was good - it had the potential to set the story up for success.

The characters were not developed well and I found myself not invested in them enough to care what happened to Gemma, her brother, or her friends.  Her cohorts, Bea and Bast, seemed to be intended to add comic relief with whitty banter and a running joke of Bast's hunger but it all fell flat and most of the time made me cringe.

The relationship between Gemma and Alistair was also challenging to me.  From the start he felt manipulative and her naivety was irritating.  I love a strong, fierce FMC and Gemma was not that.  Her blind faith despite seeing evidence to the contrary painted her as much younger than her 18 years and too naive to be seen as endearing.  Also, the physical connection between Gemma and a God that claimed her as a young child was uncomfortable and, to me, gave the feeling of being too sexualized.

Gemma's connection to Killian felt very similar.  It was quite evident he was hiding things and her developing feelings for him, despite the origin of their relationship, felt forced and unrealistic.  Her behavior and personality when with Killian was a stark difference to the way she is throughout the rest of the book, which was distracting and did not lend to her character development.

Overall, between the immaturity of the characters, the inconsistent dialogue, and the FMCs naivety it was not believable that they were young adults and I found myself feeling that I was reading a YA book instead of a New Adult Romantasy novel, which is how this book was marketed.

There is a big development and twist at the end, but it was a "too little, too late" add for me.

I do not intend to read the second in the planned duology.

Thank you for the opportunity to read this ARC and provide honest feedback.

Note: This is an ARC review. Lots of love to the author and Booksirens for giving me the chance to read and review the book. I am leaving a voluntary review.

5 ⭐️

A Fatewoken is a human chosen by a God to devote their life and prayers to them. We are following our fmc, Gemma, who is a devotee or a Fatewoken, of the God of the Sun, Alistair. When she finds out that her brother has been cursed and is destined to die, Gemma sets off on a journey to the capital city to join the royal hunt and save him. On her way there, Gemma experiences a near death experience that ends with her entering an impossible second bond with the God of Depths, Killian. In this book, we see her navigate her experiences of being bonded with two gods while also trying to save her brother.

I really liked the writing of this book. The prose fits the oldish fantasy vibe that I imagine when reading books in this genre. It helps with immersion and imagination 🙇‍♀️ The pacing of the plot was good, and the all the characters had depth and a personality, so it was easier to connect to them.

Overall, I have nothing bad to say about the book! I really enjoyed it, and I was just eating every single thing up 😩🫶 I can't believe I have to wait for book 2 😔

I knew that stupid god had something to do the brother's curse 👹 He gave me "too good to be true" vibes, and it was supported by Gemma's blind devotion to him. I couldn't really blame her because he was one of the few people who gave her nothing but kindness, and he clearly took advantage of that—damn him.

Also, I expected to cry over Killian or Gemma... I did not expect to cry over Bea and Bastian because WHAT DO YOU MEAN?!?! I found myself admiring their familial bond and loyalty for Gemma, so imagine my devastation after "that" 🥲

Lastly, Killian... As much as I would like to hate you for keeping things from your fatewoken, I can't really blame you for doing it, especially because of her connection to Alistair. Still, I hope you grovel, and grovel WELL. 🙇‍♀️🙇‍♀️🙇‍♀️

This story had me completely entranced from chapter 1! It was such an amazing and unique story. We follow our FMC Gemma as she takes on a quest in order to save her younger brother. Her life is turned upside down as she had to navigate between the truth and betrayal. And the betrayal hits hard.

I loved the world and all the characters. loved the balance of a system of gods and their tie to Gemma’s world. I think the take on faith was really cool. Especially seeing how Gemma internalizes this system and sort of ends up maybe getting a little lost in it and losing parts of herself. Gemma as a character is kind, gentle and just a pure soul who I think finds out how easily it is for others to use that to their advantage.

I loved the side characters especially her besties Bastian and Beatrix who will go to the ends of the world for Gemma and maybe even do? I really enjoyed Najira as well and hope we get to see more of her in the future. These characters were also hilarious and the banter was amazing

Now Lord Killian…Killian- I just don’t even have words. The slow burn here is the absolute best and the small glimpses of each realizing potential feelings for each other was perfection. I looked forward to the next time Gemma had the opportunity to see him and interact more. Can’t wait to see how this relationship further develops in the next book.

The twists and turns of this story always caught me off guard in the best way possible. Just when I thought maybe I had an idea where it was going- a unexpected twist came and I was not mad about it at all. I think it was appropriate and had me fighting for my own life between being angry at everything that takes place and being happy about where I thought things were headed.

I’m still not over the ending (if you know you know) and now I’m not sure how life goes on until I await the next book.

This just might be my first 6 star read of the year!

Thank you to Juliet Lockwood for the opportunity to ARC read this amazing story!

I’ll start by saying I’m a little late with this review because Fatewoken actually released yesterday. I tried desperately to finish it on time, but tiredness had other ideas (yes, I’m still battling the lurgy and I know, I sound like a broken record).

Anyway, I’m hoping some of the small continuity and spelling issues I noticed in my copy were tidied up in the final version. There were a few wrong-word moments, but nothing major enough to ruin the read.

Now, onto the story. I absolutely loved the pacing; 466 pages and not once did it drag. Juliet Lockwood keeps things tight, layering worldbuilding and emotion without ever overwhelming you. The mythology is fascinating: complex but never confusing, and the Gods feel tangible, flawed, and dangerously human. Honestly, it sometimes felt like the mortals were pawns in one very intense game of chess.

Gemma is a solid protagonist: earnest, loyal, and occasionally frustrating. About halfway through, I did start wondering where her head was at though. Her mission to save her brother took a back seat as she got wrapped up in the mysterious gem and her growing connection with Killian. The urgency dipped a little, though it does circle back later. Personally, if my sibling were dying and I could literally call a God, I’d be checking in every chance I got!

Still, I get why Lockwood eased off that plotline for a while. Repeating the same motivation might’ve stalled the story. Instead, she dives into Gemma’s internal conflict, her faith in Alistair, her forbidden bond with Killian, and the messy grey area between devotion and desire.

And then there’s that twist. No spoilers, but I actually shouted “WHAT?!” out loud. It completely re-shapes everything you think you know about the story and sets up huge emotional stakes for what’s next.

A strong, immersive start to what feels like it’ll be an unforgettable trilogy. I’ll definitely be grabbing book two the second it drops.

Thanks to the author for providing this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I had the greatest opportunity to be an ARC reader for Fatewoken and the experience was amazing!!

I love fantasy books but sometimes it’s really hard to get into them BUT this was not the case with Fatewoken. I was hooked from the beginning! I love stories about gods and magical places and this did not disappoint.

The progression of the book was soo good. So much happened but it didn’t feel rushed nor did it feel slow. Nothing felt out of place or added as filler. Everything had a purpose and was important for the story.

Gemma is such a wonderful character with a big heart. I love it and I love that she’s a strong female character that isn’t whiny and stands up for herself and those she cares about.

Killian is amazing! I loved the banter and tension between Killian and Gemma. It was perfectly enemies to lovers vibes and I’m so here for that.

One of my favorite moments (so probably a spoiler but I’m not going to give any context to help it not be a spoiler) but the “KILLIAN-GEMMA-STORM” scene was perfect. I got that giddy stupid smile on my face feeling when I read it so naturally I read it twice cause it was that good.

“His name was water to my parched throat. It felt right. It felt good” just swoon 🥰

I love when you get to a point in a book that you literally can’t put it down and you just have to finish it.

Read this book if you love fantasy. Read this book if you love romance with tension, witty banter, hot gods and magic. Just read this book please!!!!

I am so excited for book 2 even though I have to wait what’s going to feel like forever since book 1 isn’t out yet!!! But it will be worth it!!!

Definitely kinda a spoiler ahead so proceed with caution…….

I love a good end quote and this did not disappoint.

“I would burn before I bowed” like YES!!!! It’s sooo good. It shows how enraged Gemma is and how she is not going to let this go without a fight.

Also Killian bonus chapter-yes freakin please!!!!!!!

⭐ 4/5 stars

I received an ARC of Fatewoken by Juliette Lockwood, and honestly, this book was such a pleasant surprise. From the very first chapters, I was pulled into a world that feels both rich and lived-in, full of lore, history, and the kind of atmospheric detail that makes you want to linger on every page. Lockwood’s worldbuilding is vivid without ever feeling heavy, and the magic system is layered in a way that rewards you for paying attention.

The protagonist is instantly sympathetic, flawed, determined, and constantly torn between duty and desire. Her inner journey mirrors the external chaos beautifully, and I loved watching her grow into her own strength. The relationships (especially the romantic tension!) felt believable and emotionally grounded, adding warmth and depth to the more intense plotlines.

That said, there were a few parts that felt a little familiar. Some of the major twists followed classic fantasy beats, and I did wish a couple of the side characters had been explored more fully (they had so much potential). The pacing dips slightly in the middle, but it never lost my interest, and the writing itself is consistently lovely. Lockwood’s prose has that lyrical quality that makes even quiet moments feel significant.

Overall, Fatewoken is an immersive and heartfelt fantasy that balances emotion, adventure, and romance beautifully. It may not reinvent the genre, but it absolutely delivers on what makes fantasy so satisfying: compelling characters, high stakes, and a world you won’t want to leave.

Highly recommend for readers who love characterdriven fantasy with a touch of slowburn romance and gorgeous worldbuilding.

I really enjoyed this story, it was an interesting take on a fantasy religious system. Gemma is the only chosen Fatewoken of Alistair, the God of the Sun, and as such she's expected to perform daily devotions and other religious duties, lest she provoke his ire and storms/rain. She's perfectly happy to do so, as she enjoys the close bond that she has with her god, at least until her brother gets sick. As it turns out, he's being poisoned by a god, so Gemma's only recourse is to join the Royal Hunt and use her prize (a wish) to ask for Kassendra's healing, the goddess aligned with the royal family. The object of the hunt is the God's Gem, an item of mysterious power, that Alistair also wants for his own purposes. Gemma joins the hunt, but on the travel over, by boat, she falls into the ocean and is chosen as the Fatewoken of a second god, Killain, God of the Depths. Gemma is adamantly opposed, as she knows gods don't like to share and she has sworn complete fealty to Alistair, but her feelings grow more complicated over time. The fantasy world of this book was richly imagined, and the religious iconography was fascinating and not overbearing. The conflict was very relatable, and there were some twists and turns that an avid reader might have been able to pick up hints toward. The end isn't exactly a cliffhanger, but readers will be left wanting more, because there are definitely some loose ends that still need to be tied up. I would definitely read the rest of this series, and I would recommend to all fans of fantasy, world building, and imaginary religious systems.

*ARC*

Ohmygod this book was so captivating! I could not put it down. This book has so much to just fall in love with; loss of memory, friendships, devotion, Curses, betrayals.

Gemma is the FMC and honestly it was so nice to read about one that wasn't battle ready. She has a soft strength to her. Her love for her friends and family are the driving force throughout this story. And her dedication as a Fatewoken to Alistair, the god of sunlight, drives many of the decisions she makes.

One race to save her brother from a mysterious sickness, two friends that come with her, and one fateful fall into the ocean changes everything for Gemma. Her whole world gets uprooted when she runs into Killian and also has a bond, everything changes. She suddenly doesn't know who to trust.

I really loved the focus on friendship in this story because the love that Gemma has for Bastian and Beatrix is just beautiful. They are all so close to each other and the way the siblings just jump at the chance to help Gemma just shows how much they love her too.

I also really loved Killian. He is everything Alistair is not. He's broody, doesn't want anything to do with Gemma but you slowly see that wall come crumbling down.

As the story progresses, you definitely get the feeling that something is not right and the gem they are looking for has a past Gemma has no idea about. When everything comes crashing down in the last 100 or so pages, my jaw was on the floor. I was not expecting the plot twists, the betrayals! I need the next book immediately because that cliffhanger was just awful! Amazing, but I am unwell from it!

Fatewoken by Juliet Lockwood
4.25 out of 5

I luckily received an advanced copy of this book from Juliet and girl, what a great read!

If you’re looking for an FMC who doesn’t have to rely on physical strength but uses her intelligence, loyalty, and love as weapons, then Gemma is the girl for you. You will instantly fall in love with her as we go along with her on a journey to not only save herself, family, and friends but also her fellow mortals!

Fatewoken is told from the perspective of Gemma, who is the one and only Fatewoken to Alistair, Lord of the Sun. Acting as Alistair’s mouthpiece and representative on the mortal plane, Gemma is wholly devoted to her divine role and Alistair, even as far as being in love with him. However, when she discovers her brother has been poisoned by another God, she sets off on a journey that will not only pull her in two directions, towards two different fates, but it will put into question everything she knows about herself and the world around her.

The relationship between Gemma and her god, Alistair, really pulls you in but I love how this changes, as the story grows and Gemma has to balance her devotion to Alistair and come to terms with a newfound connection she finds herself in with another God.

Gemma friends are also a lovely aspect of the story with Bastian being after my own heart with his empathetic nature and obsession with food, whereas Bea was a protective and formidable character who you would love to have in your corner.

The different Gods and their abilities opened up the story wider as Gemma journeys to save her brother, leading Gemma to different other Fatewoken’s and how they interact with each other.

Although you could see the direction the story was taking the reader, it absolutely didn’t take away from the joy you’ll have reading this story, and I’m left invested to find out what happens next! I’m ready to jump back into this world when the next book is out 😊

Thanks so much to Juliet for the advanced copy, such a thoroughly enjoyable story!

I really enjoyed this one. Thank you Juliet for letting me read this arc.

In this world the gods have been banished from the world behind the veil and can only communicate to/through their Fatewoken. Our FMC Gemma is a young naive girl who is the Fatewoken of the god of sun. She is incredibly devoted to her god, and has placed all her fate in him. When her brother being very ill she asks her god how to save him. The only way to is to set out on the kings quest with a reward of her choosing.

I throughly enjoyed this book. I loved the idea of the Fatewoken and learning how the bond works. With how young Gemma is I found her devotion and nativity to be sensible for her age and experience in life so far. I absolutely loved the side characters.. her best friends, the twins Bast and Bea. I always love having a fierce female character so when our FMC was more subdued I love that her bestie Bea was that strong female that she needed to help her be brave and conquer her fears. The dynamic between the three of them was really fun.
I really loved the early on plot twist of Killian.
The story overall had really good flow, and the ending was so good. It had all the suspense and stress inky moments that I love without it, feeling chaotic and confusing. I would definitely love to continue the series, and would absolutely recommend this to others.
I also really enjoyed the bonus chapter

This is hands down one of the best reads this entire year!!
This book was so amazing, so well written, so creative, literally perfect!
The characters? Perfect. The plot? Perfect. The hidden foretelling? Perfect. The suspense? Perfect.
This story was truly one that will stay in my memory forever! Gemma is an amazing FMC with a kind and pure heart who is thrown into a world of Darkness and forced to be brave, strong, courageous and confident.
Gemma is forced to go against all she has ever known in order to save and protect those she loves the most.
This is the perfect book for those who love forced proximity, fated bonds, grumpy x sunshine, and an underlying mystery who will keep you thinking “who is guilty??”

Some favorite quotes:
- “Then I’ll be brave enough for the both of us.”
- “The sea can never claim what the sun is protecting.”
- “I looked straight into his whirlpool eyes and found that I could easily drown in them.”
- “Say yes again and there’s no going back. Not for me. Say yes and I might ruin you.”
- “I think a lot of things about you, Gemma, but foolish is not one of them.”
- “She is beautiful, but that is the least interesting thing about her.”
- “kindness when possible, cunning when necessary.”

Thank you so much for this ARC read, it was such an amazing experience💙

ARC 💖 (New Adult, no spice romantasy, 1st POV)

I want everyone to pick it up when they’re craving a really unique plot, the most AMAZING characters, and an ending that…I will not spoil 🤭

Characters: 10/10
- Gemma was such a fresh voice to me. I loved how she was presented as softer, not really a warrior or fighter at all (though she definitely held her own at many points!!). I cried with her and had my heart race with her. She was pretty realistic, as a whole, even though she was facing some crazy magical adventures. Overall I’m excited to see her growth in book two because the ending left a lot of potential.
- Alistair. Oh man, I can’t talk much about him without spoiling things but he totally ensnared me! I would devote my life to him no problem. Okay maybe that IS a problem lol iykyk
- Killian. Okay, maybe I’d turn to Killian instead 😍 The absolute SASS of him. His witty banter was amazing and I adored the chemistry between Gemma and him! He’s clearly a tortured soul and there’s so much I can’t wait to learn.
- Bea/Bast. My darlings. They were hilarious! They rounded out the trio with Gemma perfectly, with Bastian’s humor uplifting the story when it was needed, Bea’s leadership and protectiveness making me all smiley inside. I wish I had friends like them. Their little quips back and forth had me snorting. The debacle with the bull treats at the floating market was the point that I knew I’d love them forever. I’m kinda hoping one of them gets some…redemption? Revenge? In the next book….but I won’t spoil it.

Other supporting characters were also good!. Najira had some moments that bugged me tbh (😕) but she was interesting so I won’t knock her totally yet! I hope she makes herself useful in the next book and doesn’t just tag along.

Plot. 11/10
WAH the plot was AMAZING. I was sucked in so fast and then turning chapters like crazy. The pacing was tight, I don’t think any chapters were really filler at all, and I liked how we got some slower moments to contrast the action ones. The start is fast, then slows a bit, but then we get the first twist and it’s just up from there! Won’t talk about the ending for spoilers but when I say TWIST oh my god. Never saw it coming and it made me need to reread everything immediately!!

Writing. 9/10
Juliet Lockwood has a beautiful style. The dialogue and description especially. The action scenes were good, though not my favourite as a whole because they got a little hard to follow at times? I just wanted to live in the banter and confessions and arguments 😫💚 The amount of quotes I “underlined” in my kindle was crazy.

Romance. 10000/10
I am a melted puddle of feelings oh my god. My heart was BEATING SO FAST at so many moments and it kept me on the edge of my seat.

Spice. 0/10? There was no spice except kissing, but I don’t think spice would’ve worked with this story…yet. Maybe next book 👀

Extras. 10/10
The map and the character art included were pretty! I really liked the chapter headers too.

Final thoughts! 10/10
Such an amazing book! The pacing was perfect for me, the writing lovely, but it’s the plot and characters that really support everything! I’ve also read Lockwood’s previous books, so I think characters are her forte.

READ THIS FOR: An enticing plot, laugh out loud moments, and a no-spice romantasy that will absolutely have you wanting more.

YOU MIGHT NOT LOVE IT IF: You want spice, you’re looking for a more “serious” read (I know it’s NA, but I think it might’ve worked as young adult too since there’s no spice), or you don’t like cliffhangers.

Thank you for the opportunity!!!!

What a ride! Fatewoken is an intricately woven tale that had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. Juliet Lockwood delivers an imaginative, emotionally intense story that pulls no punches—and I absolutely cannot wait to see what happens in the next book.

From the first chapter I was swept up in exciting adventures, mysterious threats, and a world built with so much care and detail. Her characters are unique and multifaceted; they evolve in surprising ways, making them realistic.

The emotional stakes are high. Lockwood handles complexity and heartbreak with grace—betrayals and lies hit hard, leaving you reeling. And yet somehow, amidst the twists, there is beauty: very creative magic (or fate?) systems, vivid scenery, and a voice that is just a pleasure to read. Her prose is eloquent without becoming over‑bearing, and she balances plot, character, and emotional weight superbly.

If I had one complaint, maybe that I want more right now—but that’s more a compliment than anything. Fatewoken earns a full five stars. I’m already hungering for the next chapter in this saga. Highly recommended for anyone who loves fantasy with depth, betrayal, heart, and unforgettable characters.

🌟ARC review🌟

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the author for selecting me as one of her ARC readers for this incredible journey into a world unlike anything I've encountered before. The first chapter had me completely hooked with its fresh take on divine beings. Gone are the familiar shadow daddies and the classic fairytale creatures; instead, we're diving into a realm of gods that feels both familiar and utterly unique.

The world-building is wonderfully simple yet profoundly engaging, keeping me eagerly turning the pages. I was drawn into a narrative that seamlessly intertwines intrigue and emotion, sparking my imagination with every detail. As I read through the story, I could feel the author's passion and creativity shine through, making it a truly immersive experience.

I can't wait for my book besties to experience this tale when it's released! It's bound to captivate all those who seek something out of the ordinary. Here's hoping book two is right around the corner—I'm ready for more! Thank you, @Juliet Lockwood | Author for this unforgettable read! 💖

I really enjoyed the plot of this book, with our main character being a Fatewoken: a human who is chosen by a God to devote their life to the chosen God.

I think where it was weak for me was the reasoning for the FMC to join the Hunt. I didn’t feel like we were connected to her family enough for me to care about her journey. It’s also the trope of “hero with no training goes on journey where she needs training but somehow survives”. Bea was great, but Bast was a little annoying with his food obsession.

Another weak point, and this is a SPOILER
.
.
.
The fact Alastair and Killian were husbands really came out of left field. I would have believed they were brothers or related in some way before that. Throughout the whole book it talked about how they were enemies, but never hinted at any romantic relationship. Even when they finally met, they only called each other husband and didn’t portray any lust/desire/fury with each other. Again, I realize they are enemies because Alastair betrayed Killian, but there was no reason for me to believe that they were married.

Anyways, I did still enjoy the book and look forward to the rest of the series!

Fatewoken swept me up right from the start. The story follows Gemma, who has been bound since childhood to Alistair, the sun god, living her life as a devoted priestess. When her brother falls gravely ill, she enters the gods’ legendary Wild Hunt in hopes of winning a cure. But the journey takes an unexpected turn when she encounters Killian, god of the depths — and becomes the first Fatewoken to be bound to two gods.

This book was everything I love in romantasy: fast-paced, easy to read, and absolutely captivating. I laughed out loud, gasped at twists, and even cried. The chemistry and tension between characters kept me hooked, and the divine politics and mythic atmosphere made the world feel rich and immersive.

Yes, there are moments that feel familiar, but there are also turns that surprised me in the best way. I didn’t want to put it down — and I’m already desperate for book two before book one has even released.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Highly recommend to romantasy fans who love brooding gods, dangerous competitions, and heroines who fight back (sometimes literally with a throat punch).
