Roxy Ran #2

Red Samurai: Roxy Ran, Book 2

Rate this book
Life is complicated enough in Year Seven without also being an awesome ninja with extreme powers and trying to keep your secret crush...secret. What if you had to deal with Samurai attacks and bullies at school, too?

Roxy is now the White Warrior. She has a crush she is desperate to keep secret, plus the school bully to deal with. Roxy's sister, Elecktra, has always been a great magician, but when she shows off her magic tricks at school, the town of Lanternwood begins to transform with a sense of samurai, and the ninjas are no longer safe. There is an enemy lurking, and it soon becomes clear that the White Warrior is about to meet her match.

After reading the first book "White Ninja", I thought I'd continue reading an interesting story with several passages of highly jargoned fight scenes, but instead I was in for a big surprise... a whole different story where many of the characters had totally changed from the first book - well, apart from their names.

Roxy Ran's character shifts from a confident, self-assured ninja to a nervous teenager with little belief in her abilities. Even though Jackson (her mentor and love interest) demonstrates an interest in Roxy, she still jumps to the conclusion that he likes Elecktra (her sister) more.

Elecktra has had a major overhaul, in that she came from book one with an attitude and dislike for her sister, Roxy; making sure that people did not know anything about Roxy being her sister and moving to embarrass Roxy at every turn. Elecktra was one of the cool kids and maintained a strong interest in fashion, boys and not much else... however, in this book, we are led to believe that Lecky (as her sister calls her) has always maintained a strong interest in magic (because that's what all the cool kids do!) and has even been keen to learn something in the area of martial arts. Depending on where the story is going at the time, Elecktra changes from bitchy sister to loving sister, just so the author can put forward various plot points to make the story a little more dramatic.

Even the setting itself has been remastered, so that the reader now has to try to believe that the first book took place in a town called Lanternwood, where many ninjas and samurai live in an uneasy truce, as the two clans made a treaty whereby ninjas and samurai could not kill each other in Lanternwood. Apparently, everyone has held by this treaty, even though the main samurai villain, Hero, has tried to kill off Roxy on a few occasions in the past.

The Samurai have their own place outside of Lanternwood where they train, called Samurai Falls. Not sure why the samurai would even bother going into Lanternwood for their schooling, when all they seem to be doing is trying to figure a way to gain power (mainly via the Tiger Scrolls consumed by Roxy). Furthermore, when people walk over shadows now, apparently Samurai can feel their presence - something that the characters didn't have to worry about in the first book. This would be understandable if Roxy had just learnt about this in this book, however we are led to believe that Roxy already knew this, so we should have already known this too.

As stated earlier, the story seemed forced, in that characters would change the way they acted in order to move the story in the direction the author wanted it to go, which made me feel that the story was written in different parts and then attempted to be put together with flimsy writing. Things like Jackson and Roxy's relationship (which began in book one) had me questioning what Jackson Axe was all about, considering that he is a Year 10 student falling for a Year 7 student... Year 10 students would not be pursuing relationships with Year 7's unless there is something very wrong with them. To make matters much more unrealistic and worse, this book now introduces Elecktra's apparent relationship with Hero... WHAT??? So we are meant to believe that the Year 10 character that has been described as beautiful, cool and fashion trendsetting - who wants nothing to do with her younger sister (in most cases) - is quite happy to go out with a Year 7 boy who is known to be a bully and all round villain. I've heard of girls falling for bad boys, but usually it's a younger girl falling for an older guy - this was just a blatant fill-in-the-gaps moment in order to try and make the rest of the story somewhat believable.

There are plenty more disjointed, out of character moments that occur in the book, but I feel that I have ranted enough about that. If this was the first book, I would say it has some good ideas, but the writing is a little poor, however as this is the second book (and it is so different from the first), I can't say that I enjoyed it. The only reason I would read the third book would be to see how many more inconsistencies in character Tiffany Hall can bring in order to confuse the reader.

Roxy Ran is the White Warrior. She has released the powers of the Tiger Scrolls and now the Samurai are after her.

In between her Ninja training and secret missions, Roxy has to put up with her moody older sister Elecktra and her increasingly strange behaviour, Hero the school bully and mixed messages from her crush.

This is the second book in the Roxy Ran series and it offers readers adventure and intrigue. It's an ideal balance between reality and fantasy and its cliff hanger ending will leave readers eager for the next installment!

I love this book because it is filled with excitement and action I couldn't let go of the book. Roxy was the white ninja, her sister Elecktra was turning into a red samurai which ninjas and samurais don't get a long.

whoa... this was way awesome! and biggest plot twist ever!!!
Anyway, this ended on the biggest plot twist! She can't wait for the last book, 'Black Warrior'.

Update 28-2-15

ok, so apparently about 2 years ago, this was an awesome book, and don't get mw wrong, I did kinda like this - more than I did rereading the 1st book anyway. It's just... I don't know, I can never 'get into' the fighting scenes; there's something about them that just doesn't flow right to me. The plot twist did get me again though, and that's part of what kept me going for the last few chapters.

Right, I'm going to start reading the final book in this trilogy 'Black Warrior' and then I'll be done with the 'Roxie Ran' series.

Such a brilliant sequel to White NInja. Empowering and inspiring. This series shows no signs of slowing down. Elecktra steals the show in a hilarious and terrifying way. All the characters grow and develop in beautiful ways. Cute recipe in the back of the book. The fight scenes are unique with Hall's expertise. I can't wait for Black Warrior!
