Reason to Be Happy: Why logical thinking is the key to a better life

Rate this book
Brought to you by Penguin.

Why do our friends have more friends than we do? Can simple maths help us with our self-esteem? And how can game theory offer solutions to the climate emergency?

When we reason well, it is easier to be happy (and good and also, you know, right). But when dealing with others, it's not enough to be clever - you must be able to put yourself in the shoes of the clever person opposite you and think of what they might do. It's this insight that lies at the heart of Reason to Be Happy, whether you are dealing with the Cuban Missile Crisis or letting go of anger.

Full of fascinating thought experiments and revealing stories, Reason to Be Happy is a paean to the power of rationality. If you want to have a good life and even make the world a better place, you need to start by thinking clearly.

Although there are only a few ratings for this book I think it deserves more than a 3. It's all about expectations. If you're looking for deep insights on happiness maybe it's a 3, but it's really a book about game theory. I found it interesting and thought provoking.

A book that shed light on how economics, psychology, and philosophy can make the world a better place.

I will not recommend it as an audiobook as there are a couple of diagrams.

I did not finish this book but did read about 2/3 of it. It started out interesting but then veered into something I didn’t enjoy.

The book is supposed to be about reasoning but felt more to me like a bunch of name dropping of authors, philosophers, academics mixed with the author’s own musings.

I don’t think it was the author’s intent but the tone of the book progressively felt insufferably academic and from a lifetime of privilege.

I was genuinely struggling to keep intellectually therefore I probably wasn’t the right audience anyway and chose to return the book to the library and not finish it which is rare for me.

The title is somewhat misleading. I thought it would be more on individual happiness and lifehacks through reasoning. A light read also. The book is about revolutions and creating a better world for everyone. A much more Noble idea of course, just not what I was expecting. Pretty interesting though.
