Elias Omari exists in the darkness that clouds his mind. Cress Devereaux exists in the light that inspires her soul. Together, they create beautiful shades of gray.
An arranged marriage forces two families to smooth the edges of their jagged past with the hopes of a new beginning. But can a union tainted with secrets and uncertainty promise an unbreakable alliance?
The one thing that Elias and Cress share in common is family over everything, but should they continue to fight for family when that same family has never truly fought for them?

The cover of this book pulled me in but, the storyline held me hostage from page one. When I tell y’all Shadows and Whispers had me in a choke hold I didn’t want to let go of. You have two powerful families that have had bad blood for the last four years. But, the sharks are circling the wagon and it’s in the best interest of the Devereaux and Omari clan to keep their enemies closer by forging an alliance. Christian Deveraux has proposed a marriage of convivence with his sister Cress and the brother of his mortal enemy, Elias Omari. Elias is the black sheep who walked away after tragedy struck their family. Cress is the golden child whose been allowed to follow her dreams and turn her back on family responsibility. Neither are happy to be put in this position but, the time has come for both of them to step up and honor their families. What I really loved about this book was the focus on Cress and Elias’ relationship. Yes there were other things going on in the background but, the romance between the main characters was the real star of the book. While he wasn’t necessarily ecstatic at the thought of this marriage of convivence in the beginning, Elias’ feelings completely changed when he saw Cress on stage for the first time. He was completely smitten and went above and beyond to woo his new fiancée. Between the flowers, the dinner dates, and the unannounced pop ups, Cress couldn’t stop her attraction even if she wanted to. I absolutely love how she didn’t let Elias’ mental illness become a deterrent. Cress did her research and asked the necessary questions so, she could be informed about Elias' condition. And, when he needed her most, she didn’t hesitate to be there for her husband. Cress said, “That’s my man and I’ma stick beside him.” I just loved how these characters went into this marriage ready to commit themselves 100% to each other. Their relationship was so natural and organic, you couldn’t help but fall in love with Cress and Elias as they fell in love with each other. Shadows and Whispers is a marriage of convivence done right. You will absolutely root for these characters because, they more than earned their HEA. I love the added suspense the author threw in for a lil razzle dazzle. It definitely kept me guessing. I’m uber excited that each of the siblings will have their own story to tell. I can’t wait for Ezekiel and Christian to get rid of their triflin’ azz wives. Book two and three me expeditiously!
Yassssssss K.C. Mills I want more stories like this from you!!!! Arranged marriages are one of my favorite tropes and you did an amazing job with bringing this story to life.
Elias was the black sheep of the family! His parents never accepted him despite challenges he faced and their disdain for him reared its ugly head when his brother lost his life. That took a toll on Elias’ mental health and he made the decision to walk away leaving everything and everyone in his rear view! Now 4 years later, his other brother Ez has come to him with an offer to save business relationships that are in jeopardy due to this longstanding conflict between their family and the Devereaux’s.
Cress is a free spirit! As free as her family will allow her to be. Despite their legal and illegal business dealings, she’s managed to steer clear and thrive as a renowned dancer! Dance is her life and nothing brings her more joy than that. After her brother comes to her and reveals the plan to form an alliance with their number one enemy, the Omari’s, she is not having it at all………or so she thought!!
When I tell y’all I loved EVERYTHING about this story!!!! 🗣️ I LOVED EVERYTHING!!!! Elias and Cress’s relationship was so natural and organic and had my heart skipping several beats!! Cress was a real one!! The way she reacted to Elias’s news was EVERYTHING!!! Like could she have been more perfect!! The way she stood by his side during his darkest hour was EVERYTHING!! Elias struggled but he was still a whole alpha man that protected what belonged to him….his wife!
Nas has been my favorite alpha by K.C but Elias may have taken his throne because I absolutely loved him and my heart went out to him. I love how K.C. weaved mental illness into the story! It was done so tastefully and respectfully. I’m excited that we will be getting more from the siblings in the future because I need Ez, Christian and Jona to find happiness! Read this book TODAY!! You will not be disappointed!
I should kick my own ass for not reading this sooner. 😡 What I thought would be a typical arranged marriage read, blossomed into an amazing story! I could tell right away that Elias was dealing with something heavy, that caused him to fight, run from his family and keep relationships at a surface level. When the pieces began to come together about his struggles, my heart cried for him! 💔 His damn parents were foul for treating him like he was broken, a disappointment to the family, and placing all the blame on him when they lost Lucas.
Cress wanted no parts of that life, and thrived in her career, as a principal ballerina. However, she is still a Devereaux, and sometimes duty calls ready or not.
When Ez called Elias about the proposed nuptials, I wondered how in the hell is that gone work? I understood the tie they needed as families, but with the bad blood, it was a recipe for disaster! However, Elias would consider doing it for his brother, as he had always been there for him.
Although Cress and Elias initially held resentment toward the other, due to the circumstances leading up to and following the deaths of their brothers, there was also an intense attraction. They both lived by the code family over everything, so they knew what needed to be done. Cress wondered how she would make it with this man they all called crazy but was oh so sexy! Elias was ready to give his all to this woman, and that was so out of his comfort zone.
I so loved this couple! The time and effort they took with conversations and dates, to learn of the other prior to the nuptials was beautiful. Even more so, when the truth was revealed to Cress, she didn’t miss a beat! She was the epitome of I’m standing by my man! ❤ I enjoyed learning about this disorder. The cycling, the highs and lows, and how it affects the individual, as well as the people around them. Elias was a proud man but seeing him experience vulnerability with Cress had me swooning big time! Their coupling was unconventional, a means to an end, but their love was real! Hope to get stories about the sibling soon. Great read! 👍👍👍
This actually started a little slow for me and I was really concerned that It would drag…BUT, This truly is a well written story of Love, True Support, and Overall Humanity….
WOW!!! This was an amazing story. Elias has a serious mental illness. The book portrays a lot of the ways his illness effects both him and the people closest to him. And most importantly how Elias sought help. As for me, I adore him with my whole heart. I was really ready to go to blows with his mother. Just saying. But it's wrapped up in this very interesting and entertaining world of arranged marriages for the sake of business alliances. There are very strong mafia vibes without that ever being stated. This was my first KC Mills book and I think that may be her style. I will definitely be reading more to find out. In fact, I am hoping for some sibling side character stories soon.
Cress was an amazing character. She was a strong woman on many levels, and loyal to the bone. She was a lady I think I could hang with. I absolutely loved her from beginning to the very last page. I loved her bff, Trini too.
This story brought ALL THE FEELS! It was intense. It really broke my heart for real. But nothing worth having is easy, and with the right support and level of commitment even the hardest things will be exceptionally beautiful. I loved it. Happy reading!
4.5 ⭐️ Elias and Cress were married for reasons of convenience. Due to loss on both sides, there has been animosity between the two families. They expect the marriage to give them more stability and order. Cress chose not to go ahead with it. Although Elias was a powerful man who need direction and provided us with BDE energy, he was also a lonely man. Cress was unaware to the meaning of marrying Elias. Because of his bipolar disorder, Elias provides her the option to leave. However, after knowing of his mental instability, Cress is prepared to ride. Although there are many layers to the plot, I really enjoyed how Cress and Elias navigated Elias' bipolar episode. Elias making Cress fall in love was fun to observe. In order to help and support Elias as much as she could, Cress genuinely wanted to learn about his condition. Even with his mind off the chaos in the family business, all Elias wanted to do was love Cress and take care of all of her needs. I was on edge when Elias started spiraling toward the end that was a good twist. I was very relieved that his brother and Cress were on his side. I'll admit that I wished Elias' episodes and his triggers had been more frequent I think it would have built more on the relationship. I'd want to read about the siblings if we get more books.
I loved Cress and Elias. Elias came with his BDE and said you my wife just from seeing Cress dance. I loved the bipolar mental issues in book as it showed how those who are manic go on for days or weeks. I’m glad those who fckd with Elias got theres but Temple should have died too fck that. I can’t wait to read about Ez and him leaving his trifling wife and finding love.
Ellias and Cress were the marriage of connivence I wasn’t expecting. The two of their families had bad blood due to the killings of their brothers. A marriage to show the families were aligned was needed due to evil powers at bay trying to take advantage of the broken alliance. Cress wasn’t originally the one who was supposed to be in arranged marriage but she came in talking cash ish that she couldn’t cash when Ellias saw her! He knew what he wanted! I loved seeing him make her open up to him and want to marry him. I felt for him hiding his biggest secret that he felt made him a monster. Mental Health is never a thing to play about. I will say Cress still wanting to marry him shocked me and made feel she had a big heart because she was about to take on a lot. The ending of the book had me on edge because had it not been for Ellias brother idk what would’ve happened! The resolve made me happy but whew I was a little nervous they weren’t going to make it. Sex scenes were great and overall I enjoyed this book! Another good one from KC Mills! 4.5 ⭐️!
I was pleasantly surprised with this read. Marriages of convenience are just not my jam. But lately, these authors have been having me eat my words. Elias and Cress were forced into marriage to fulfill some family duties. But there's bad blood between those families. So we expected this marriage to be a recipe for disaster. Except that it wasn't. Through this little marriage arrangement, the love came rather quickly with Elias and Cress. The moment they met, their reservation vanished…well for Elias at least. Elias is layered. He's quiet, he's reserved, he's a beast, and oozed sexiness. He's also dealing with a pretty heavy, dark issue that, if not dealt with, could send him spiraling. But he's continuously working on it. Cress was a dancer with the most gentle soul and heart. And patience is definitely her virtue. She loves her family, and that's an understatement. It's because of the love she has for her family that got her in this marriage situation. Though she was against this marriage, with Elias' charm, gentleness, and his BDE, I don't even think she realized her walls were coming down. Cause the next thing we know, they had everyone blushing with how cute and real and open they were with one another. (Epi. Pg. 377) Elias POV: "My chaos to her calm. My dark to her light." And Cress was truly that for him. Elias loved him some Cress. I was sure he fell for her the moment he watched her dance, without having even talked to her. This was beautiful. Every time I take a break with KC and come back, she reminds me how great of a writer she is. The 2 families involved seem to have a lot going, and I can't wait for stories. 4.7⭐️
I loved this book! Elias and Cress were an unlikely couple, because their families had been at odds for years. When they needed to make an alliance they had to show a united front.
Elias was such a complex character. He was broken, mainly because his parents didn't stand by him when they realized he had a mental illness. He felt that he wasn't worthy of real love. I hurt for him, because he had such a good heart and that lack of love and acceptance from his family really damaged him. When his brother needed him, he showed up and that led him unexpectedly to the best thing that ever happened to him...Cress. He was a goner at first sight, before he even knew who she was. He knew she was going to be special to him. Whew the way Cress loved this man 😭 This woman did a complete 180. From going hard against their family arrangement, to accepting, and then being a willing and eager participant. She took her time to learn Elias. They grounded themselves with honesty, respect, loyalty, and communication. It was just everything feeling them fall. There was so much ish stacked against them and their family. Even when it seemed impossible they weathered the storms and came out on the other side as a sweet little family. Loved it!
WOW!!!!!!!!! What a head shaking, mind blowing, page turner.
Beyond the betrayal, the disrespect, and the out of control crime bosses, the power that these men held over the women in their lives was nothing short of dictatorship! They had no choice but to do what their brothers said!
Both Cress and Elias also had the mothers from hell, so that just added to the madness.
But my heart broke for Elias. The horrible things he had to do, to battle with his Bi-Polar condition. while trying to maneuver through the world he was forced to live in.
This was my first book by K.C. Mills, and it won’t be my last. Marriage of convenience is my favorite trope, which was done so well in this book.
Elias Omari and Cress Devereaux are set to be married for convenience; due to losses on both sides, these two families have been at each other’s throats for years.
Elias is the black sheep of his family. His parents never excepted him, and their disdain for him only heightened after losing his brother. That loss took a toll on Elias's mental health, and he decided to walk away from everything and everyone. Now four years later, his older brother EZ has come to him with an offer to save the family business and end the beef the Omari’s have with the Devereaux’s.
Cress is a beacon of light. She’s a free spirit who is chasing her dreams. With all her families and legal and illegal businesses, Cress has steered clear of the mess and thrived as a renowned professional ballerina. Dance is her one true passion; it feels her with so much joy that it’s the only thing she wants to focus on. When her brother Christian reveals the plan to go into business with their long-time enemies, the Omari’s, she does not have it.
I fell so hard for Cress and Elias; their relationship was so beautiful to watch unfold, I was reading this, and I couldn’t stop smiling. Cress is the definition of a REAL ONE! She was so understanding and loyal! All Elias asked for was trust, loyalty, and respect, and Cress gave him those things without blinking.
How she handled finding out about Elias's secret was so beautiful, she never judged him, not once. All she wanted to do was love and support him through his struggles. When shit hit the fan, Cress stood ten toes down for her husband and wasn’t turning her back on him.
The mental health representation in this book was so well done; I felt like I learned so much about this disorder. Elias's willingness to seek help and be vulnerable was probably my favorite part of the book. I love seeing a black man take his mental health seriously and be loved and supported along his journey.
I knew something wasn’t right with the therapist; I could feel it in my bones.
Praying we get more books in this series because I need more of the siblings, EZ, Christian, and Jona.
As a straight woman, this book makes me wonder what is WRONG with the straights.
I didn’t enjoy the writing - it could use a solid edit.
Example: "from the way my fists clenched tightly." Ignoring the cliche of fists clenching to signal aggression - fists clenched tightly? As opposed to what, clenching your fists... loosely? Just cut the adverb.
Another example: "meet his intense brown orbs" for when she looks him in the eye... Orbs are doing the most.
Another: “she exposed a smile” makes it sound like she peeled back her face to show another face underneath and, well, that’s a very different genre.
Another: (MMC) "fucked my fist... ribbons of cum escaped." Um WHAT now? Ribbons? Do you, maybe, um, want to get that checked out?
Another: After the MMC admits he can't have sex because it becomes an addiction for him he "smiled arrogantly." What about confessing you have no self-control (=weakness) makes him feel arrogant? Wouldn't that be more of a self-effacing smile?
Please stop me. Anyway, the stilted dialogue doesn't help. Nor does the extensive exposition-packed internal monologuing.
The characters don’t always make believable choices - I know they’re gangsters, but when MMC has a bipolar episode his brother’s response is to pull a gun on him (he is not threatening the brother). Make it make sense.
There are also some interesting choices for the 21st century...
Example: a guy asks the MMC if he's into women (implication is asking him what his sexuality is) and his reaction is to try to beat the guy up. Oh, is gay still an insult?
Another example: FMC refers to her SIL's abortions as "killing his children." Authors are allowed to be pro-life, of course, but that's a big choice where she could have just said SIL has been faking miscarriages...
On the plus side, the bipolar character gets to have a HEA with a loving wife and a baby son… but the baby son, as an infant, is talking like a toddler.
I think that may well get to the root of the problem - this reads like a first draft. First drafts are usually messy, ugly but if you polish you can find a gem. This book needs that polish.
Thanks, NetGalley and Dreamscape, for the gifted ARC in exchange for an honest review.
After completing Shadows and Whispers, I knew the journey was worthy it! The story immediately captured my attention from the beginning and did not let up until the end. The author penned a story that was heartbreaking and simultaneously beautiful to experience. There was a lot of showing and telling on-page of what the characters had gone through, but there was also a heavy dose of romance and love. Elias is such a man; he is an enforcer at baseline, but something about Cress had him weak in the knees.
The focus was on one couple, but I felt like I learned about the co-characters. Cress Devereaux is a principal dancer; she doesn't fit the typical dancer's body, as she is tall yet curvy, and I loved that she was confident. Elias Omari is mysterious; after a loss and being disowned by his family, he worked on healing himself and left the family business. The two families have had bad blood for years; the marriage is supposed to help them form an alliance and bring more stability and law and order.
The unconventional way that Elias and Cress are supposed to marry is different, as Elias was supposed to marry another Deveraux sister. Cress had no idea what marrying Elias entailed, as expected for a marriage of convenience. However, throughout the story she has more than one chance to walk away. I felt Cress was brave to stay with Elias after learning his diagnosis. She did her own research and learned what triggers and routines helped Elias. Elias captured my heart because he was committed to the marriage. It was so sweet, the way he courted Cress and was so thoughtful. It had me so unraveled- I was a believer in their story!
The final chapters had my heart racing because I could sense that Elias was spiraling out of control; I couldn't pinpoint when things would come to a head. I found myself feeling sorry for him so many times. His character tugged at my heartstrings. Luckily, he had Cress and his brother during those trying times.
To recap, Shadows and Whispers is a very layered story; it deals with a marriage of convenience, mental health rep, and enemies to lovers. There are hints of suspense and other heavy content that could trigger readers, so be mindful and practice self-care as you experience this read. I thoroughly enjoyed this story! I loved how the author wrote the characters' stories. She accurately described mental health and the stigmas. And she ensured there was a happily ever after! I would recommend this book.
I really enjoyed Elias and Cress’s story. You never know the ins and outs of dealing with loved ones who suffer from mental illness until you live the experience yourself. My hat goes off to family, friends, and caregivers who brave through it daily. Cress and Elias didn’t know what to expect being forced into an arranged marriage by their respective families. If only all marriages could end this well. Elias was smitten from the beginning, Cress not so much. However the Charm, realness, and vulnerability Elias threw at her, Sis couldn’t help but fall. T.K.O.! They both put a real effort into their marriage and it shows that when you both put in the effort, you can’t help but to succeed.
The brothers, Ezekiel and Christian. I feel like they both have a story to tell. I hope that we get to hear them. I fell in love with Ez just as much as Elias. Do men like Ezekiel truly even exist in our world?
The arranged marriage trope is really growing on me and this novel really gave the trope a special place in my heart. Cress and Elias won me over almost immediately with their love for one another. Cress was brave, loyal, kind, and understanding. I love how she didn’t run from Elias or treat him differently. She wanted to understand his condition and love him through it and that’s exactly what she did. My favorite thing was how Elias was head over heels for Cress almost immediately. He became protective of her from day one. He didn’t play about her! I’m so proud of him for working so hard to manage his struggles not only for Cress but for himself.
The story had so much and varied layers to uncover and discover. The Mental health aspect was handled in a respectful manner. The couples love story had my heart soaring with joy. The part that captured my attention fully had to do with the capacity the heroine had for her hero to love him even in his brokenness.
These characters were worthy of each other. This book was worthy of the hype. Arranged marriage trope done well. This was perfectly paced, unique and sexy. This is a good, better than good, excellent read.
On the one hand, the story of Elias and Cress was 4-5 stars.
But the overall story, complete work of the book was 3 stars… hear me out.
The author came a lot of detail regarding, the family and organization- which I’m sure was intended to set the stage for future books. However, some of those details didn’t add to this couple’s story. If anything it was confusing. Plus there were multiple storylines or details mentioned and they didn’t go anywhere. For example: the dynamics between the main characters and their moms. Or the choppy nature of Reno and the other two being connected.
In other words the overall stories had some holes and flow issues. But the essence of their story was there, just wished it had been flushed out more.
I loved the mental health representation. It was handled respectfully. Looking forward to reading more about the siblings. Just curious which one would be up next. It would cool to read about Christian and Ezekiel entering into the dating scene at the same time. The bromance/ mafia style and the two women who bring them to their knees. And allow Jona to have her own book. Either way, I’m ready to read it.
4.5 ⭐️ I absolutely love marriage of convenience tropes! Elias was struggling mentally, and the death of his brother didn't help his situation. He believed that leaving his whole family behind was the best decision. However, everything changed when his brother called him, saying he was needed. Elias was to marry into the Devereaux family to create an alliance. Initially, he was set to marry one sister, but everything shifted when he laid eyes on Cress Devereaux. From the moment he saw her, Elias was smitten, while Cress was not as easily impressed. However, Elias's charm, authenticity, and vulnerability began to win her over. Their love story faced numerous challenges, but Cress proved to be an extraordinary woman. She loved her husband unconditionally, supporting him through his mental illness with grace and compassion. She became his calm and peace, while he served as her protector.
I was very impressed with this story. The character development, how you shared light into MI, and sibling bond. It was great. I cannot wait to read more about them in the future.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Elias pulled on my.heartstrings early on. I have a lot of respect for how KC Mills shared some of the struggles and stigmas of mental health issues. I also like how it wasn't sugar coated and she showed the amount of effort, work and dedication that is required with being and loving a person that lives with mental illness. This was a really good story and I can't wait to read more about this family. Both brothers will make for great book baes.
I really loved this. Elias and Cress were so good and understanding of one another despite how this began. I love the way this author took her time and worked through the ups and downs of loving someone who struggles with mental health issues outside of their control and how important it is to be there with them through the storm. I am happy that we will get an update if these characters in future sibling installments as well. I read slowly because I didn’t want it to end. This is my first by this author, but it will not be my last.
✨marriage of convenience ✨obsessed hero ✨black love ✨dancer ✨mental health rep (bipolar disorder) ✨tatted man
Elias is a very powerful man who has been set to marry the youngest daughter of another powerful family. But once he gets a glimpse of her sister dancing, he is adamant on marrying her instead.
This book was so immersive! I loved how obsessed Elias was with Cress. So swoony! I really appreciated the deep dive into mental health and how the heroine was with the hero every step of the way.
TW: people mess with the hero's bipolar medication
4.5 🌟 Mrs. K.C. Mills! I am a fan!!! Elias and Cress' love story was such an enjoyable one that unfolded in such a beautifully profound and deep way! The arranged marriage trope has become a favorite of mine just because of this story alone!!!
And the representation of mental health within the Black community and Black families was so well done, even the sadder and darker aspects that come with it, because Elias' mom was absolutely despicable as a maternal figure and she didn't even have or need much “page time" to make me despise her. I wonder if she will make any further appearances in the other books in this series, because I need her to know what she's missing out on due to her treatment of Elias... But that's super sidebar in the grand scheme of things tbh.
Nevertheless, Cress was such a likeable FMC with the way she chose to love Elias and all that came with him. And I couldn't help, but applaud her dedication to her passion for dancing despite her mother's passive aggressive “daggers” because that lady was a piece of work too! Simply put, the mothers of both MCs were disgusting examples of how a mother should unconditionally love their children, so I applaud both Cress and Elias for finding their way without the necessary love of their mothers.
And Elias... I have a special place in my heart for his character. He is still book boyfriend / husband material, even with his shortcomings and mental health issues / bipolar disorder, mostly because he chose to take managing it seriously and still deeply cared for & loved Cress in spite of. Also, big kudos to Ezekiel for how he constantly checked in with Elias and continued to give him brotherly love no matter how their parents chose to treat him because of his disorder. All the siblings in this story, including Christian and Jona, were likeable and I look forward to reading their stories soon. OH ALSO! Trini is the type of best friend that all women need in their life with the way she always spoke her mind and gave Cress the “real” without sugarcoating her truth!
And that 3rd act plot twist was phenomenally executed and completely unpredictable, at least to me! The ending to Elias and Cress' love story was so beautiful and I am thankful for the HEA that K.C. Mills chose to give them because Elias deserved it even more than Cress, and I'm glad he started to see how worthy of love he was. Standing ovation!!! 10 out of 10 recommend and I will be diving deeper into Mrs. K.C. Mills' catalogue starting with the rest of “The Collective" series!
