The Damaged Bride

Rate this book
Clara longs to escape from her abusive father and longs for a man who will accept her and not see her as damaged due to a childhood accident.

Nate is a Kansas cowboy who's looking for a wife to help him on his farm. As Clara leaves Chicago and travels to Kansas, she worries what Nate will do when he sees her. Although the accident has left her scarred, she prays he will be able to overlook that and see her heart.

But Nate is shocked when he sees her and refuses to go through with the marriage, leaving Clara heartbroken and fearful she will have to return to her father. But a severe storm turns everything on end, and Nate starts to look at Clara in a very different light.

Short but sweet

I love reading mail order bride stories. This one is another good one.

Clara's mother left her and her father. Her dad is a drunk and verbally abusive. Clara decides to respond to an advertisement for a bride but wonders if she should tell him about her impairment. When she arrives at the train station to meet Nate, he realizes the truth and tells Clara he can't marry her. He takes her to his sister's boarding house so she has somewhere to stay for the time being.

I wish there was more to this story.

This story kept me glued to my kindle.

This is soooo short. Like, even knowing the page count, it seemed to be too short. The heroine chased after the hero even when he clearly rejected her, which is something I’m not a fan of (I want the hero to chase and grovel). The heroine falls in love with the hero in less than a week, four days of which she doesn’t even see him. They only actually spent one day together, and have maybe a half-dozen conversations outside that time, most of which involve the hero hurting her feelings. This is an historical in setting only; the dialog and sensibilities are quite modern, and things are pretty inaccurate or unrealistic. The resolution is like two sentences long. SUCH a great set-up, but falls short.

Beauty and Strength in the Eye of the Beholder

Very beautifully written and very enjoyable to read. The characters were very realistically portrayed. Don't ever count a handicapped person out as they're usually stronger than the norm. This was clean. A perfect read for younger readers.

Western Mail Order Bride

Clara,s father was verbally abusive, she had a leg that needed extra rest but she was a hard worker. Her Father continally called her names and told her how useless she was. So Clara answered a mail order bride advert for a farmer out west. When he saw her limp, he sent her away. Clara,s heart is broken, what is she going to do now.

Clara and Nate

I didn’t enjoy this story as much as I have others by this author.
So much conflict between Nate and Clara for most of the book and then a very rushed ending.

Very sweet, yet very quick

So sweet yet so very short. Would have loved more of their time together. The relationship just started and it’s the end. Bummer!
