Sandra Markle also wrote "Wolves (Animal Predators)" which was published in 2004. "On the Hunt with Wolves" is essentially the updated version of that book. Granted, I think this book is an improvement, but I still do not particularly like it. The hunt photos are not for me, but they are to be expected given the title of this book. As with the 2004 publication, Markle uses "alpha" numerous times, which I have heard that the biology community is moving away from, and I fear this will make the book outdated sooner rather than later. "Alpha" is not used until page 12 in the book when Markle tells readers that "the pack is always a family starting with the parents, which are often called the alpha male and alpha female." I wish this had been the only mention of alpha wolves, but Markle uses "alpha" many more times in the second half of the book, unfortunately. I did like Markle's note in the back of the book where she talks about the impact that climate change has on the wolf population.

32 pgs. Kids will enjoy this series and the wolf book brings all the facts and photos you could want as a reader of animal books. Even if you have read other wolf books, this one has lots of cool information you will want to know. Be sure to read the author's note and Gray Wolf Snap Facts at the end of the book. It includes a glossary and index for readers. Highly recommended for Grades 4-6.
